Today exclusive. Oneonone with Melinda Gates, whose foundation poured hundreds of millions of dollars into finding a coronavirus vaccine. This morning why she said the country wasnt ready. Im surprised we werent better prepared but quite honestly, im surprised we wasted so much time. The good she hopes can come from difficult times. Let it snow. Parts of the northeast brace for historic winter storm over mothers day weekend. A bitter blast of arctic air set to shatter records in the south. Al has the very latest. All that plus live at home. Inside snls plan for a Season Finale like no other today may 8th, 2020. Announcer from nbc news, this is today from Savannah Guthrie and hoda kotb from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Hi, everybody. Welcome to today. It is nice to have you along with us on friday morning. Were so happy its friday. We are, savannah. Good to see you. We do have a very busy day and a lot to get to, including that breaking news in georgia. The overnight arrest from a father and son accused of murdering a black man who was jogging in their neighborhood. We will have a live report just ahead, savannah. We will. But were going to start with the nation bracing for this mornings new jobs report. It is expected to be a stunner. Record unemployment because of the coronavirus. Tens of millions of americans out of work and in desperate need of help this morning. Tom costello begins our coverage. Tom, good morning. Good morning, savannah. These are breathtaking numbers showing the greatest increase in unemployment in 20 years. Nearly 20 million americans out of work in april alone, double what the country saw in the 2007 to 2009 economic crisis. It is the biggest, most dramatic jump since the Great Depression. The Labor Department reporting april Unemployment Rate jumped to 14. 7 , with 20. 5 Million People losing their jobs. The president reacting this morning. As president , we had the strongest economy in the history of the world, the strongest economy weve ever had, and we had to close it, which is artificial. We artificially closed it. Reporter jobless numbers more dramatic since the Unemployment Rate in february was 3. 5 . The economic mess forcing some across the country to seek help from local food banks the first time in their lives. Myra is a server in atlantic city. Part of leisure and hospitality. I am ready to go back, i need money. But i want to do it in a safe environment. Reporter the pandemic taking a toll on trade, transition, as well as construction. Also feeling the pain, retailers from Small Businesses to big box stores. Nieman marcus did. As well as others. Seattlebased store and jcpenney with lord taylor planning to revamp inventory. President trump says hes looking for a bounceback later this year rainfall im viewing the Third Quarter as a very important quarter. As i said, that will be a transition. I think you can almost say a transition into greatness. Next year will be a phenomenal year. Experts promise getting back to where we were isnt like flipping a switch. The Federal Reserve bank telling savannah reopening will be a slow process and the Unemployment Rate wont tell the full story. I think the number tomorrow will probably be Something Like 16 or 17 . I think the real number is probably around 23 or 24 . Its devastating. Reporter thats the head of the Federal Reserve in minneapolis speaking yesterday, echoing what many people believe is true. The real Unemployment Rate in this country is probably closer to 23, 25 . To put it in perspective, the country has now lost more jobs, all the jobs we recreated and gained since the great recession, we have lost those jobs in over a decade. A couple months ago we were talking record unemployment, low unemployment in this country. Now we are at record highs. The question is which parts of the country come back and which will be vulnerable. Which industries struggle to regain footing. Savannah . Those are the questions we want to pose. Turn to one expert, our colleague over at cnbc, the host of squawk box and New York Times columnist. Andrew, there arent enough words in the dictionary to express how bad this is expected to be, a real gut punch in terms of the jobs report. Tell us why that doesnt capture the picture. Thank you. We talk about the statistic. Every statistic has a name and family behind it. One of the reason it doesnt count it, there are a lot of people not seeking a job, they wont be counted. The number the Labor Department said today, the number is likely to be 5 higher. Were talking 19, 20 in reality. One of the things we talked about, you were looking to see if losses were confined to sectors we expect, entertainment, travel, retail, or whether there was contagion, in other words that it spread beyond. What did you find . For the most part confined to the areas you would imagine. Thats a good sign. The other thing, if you call it a good sign, nearly 80 of jobs, workers no longer working believe it is temporary, believe they have been furloughed. Thats what they think. It suggests if they get back to work, we could have a faster recovery. One other thing to mention, the inequality of this. When you look through the numbers, Unemployment Rate for people that dont have a High School Diploma is 22 . Thats against people that have a college diploma, which is only 8. 4 . It shows the schism in this country of whats happening. How do people make sense of this and seeing wall street rally. Wall street is looking 12 months out from now, not looking at today. Youll see the stock market, people are hopeful, hoping 12 months from now, the world looks a lot better. And that disconnect is hard to stomach of course. Andrew ross sorkin, thank you very much. Hoda, send it to you. A breaking story overnight where a man accused of chasing and killing a black man. Blayne alexander joins us with this story. Hey, blayne, good morning. Reporter hoda, good morning to you. A former Law Enforcement officer and his son travis face charges of murder and aggravated assault. It comes after days of protest not just in georgia but around the country. The director of Georgia Bureau of investigations tells me the video was a key piece leading to those arrests. Reporter this morning, a father and son behind bars. They are charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of a 25yearold. Overnight, his family says it has been a long wait. Release, our family, that we know they are behind bars but we still have a long process to go. The shooting happened in february but the release this week of this video showing the altercation quickly sparked a national outcry. If we can get involved when theres an active crime scene, thats better for people. Celebrities including lebron james, Serena Williams and taylor swift demand justice, President Trump expressed confidence. Im sure theyll come up with what happened, it is a sad, very sad thing. Reporter the two men armed are seen following arbery running down the street. They confront arbery and after a scuffle hes eventually shot dead. Nbc cant verify what happened before and after this video. Arberys family said he was unarmed and just out for a job. A jog. What justice looks like is these men behind bars for the rest of their lives, a public lynching. They believe he was the man involved in recent home burglaries. This 911 call by an unknown caller was recorded shortly before arbery was killed. Someone breaking in right now. No. Its open, under construction. Hes running right now. There he goes right now. According to a Police Report, gregory mcmichael, a former police officer, claims arbery began to violently attack travis, and the two men then started fighting over the shotgun. Mcmichael says his son shot arbery in selfdefense. The case is now on its third prosecutor. The previous two recused themselves over possible conflicts of interest. Now ten weeks later an arrest. But those demanding justice say this is just the first step. Today supporters have organized a virtual run using the i run with ahmaud. They urge everyone to run or walk 2. 3 miles to represent the day arbery was killed. Thank you. In the meantime the coronavirus outbreak has now hit very close to home for the president. The white house is now going to ramp up testing around him after a member of the military who serves as a personal valet to the president tested positive for the virus. Nbcs Peter Alexander joins us from the white house peter, good morning. Reporter savannah, youre right. That coronavirus scare is hitting very close to home for President Trump. The man testing positive is a military valet, whose duties bring him to the oval office they are raising new questions th about whether enough is being reporter the coronavirus hitting the west wing with his personal valet testing positive. It is a little strange. One of those things. Reporter the valet, a member of the navy, served the president lunch and diet cokes and other duties. I have very little contact with this gentleman. Know who he is, good person. Ive had very little contact, mike has had very little contact. Reporter a person saying the president was lava level mad when he learned the news saying he does not believe they are doing all they can to protect him. A source with knowledge of the situation calling it an operational failure. President trump says he and Vice President pence both tested negative on backtoback days wednesday and thursday, insistin the white house is now tightening its protocol. Testing is not a perfect art. No matter what you do, testing is not a perfect art so we test once a week, now were going to go to testing once a day. While the white house begins daily testing, the supply of those same tests nationwide remains far below what experts say is needed to reopen the country. Earlier this week White House Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany dismissed the idea of everyone of tests for everyon returning to work. If we tested every single american in the country at this moment, we have to retest them an hour later and an hour later after that at any moment you could theoretically contract the virus. The notion Everyone Needs to be tested is simply nonsensical. President trump said to me yesterday his valets wear masks. He said a lot of people in the white house wear masks but covering this place over the last several weeks, ive almost never seep any official or any member of the white house wear masks inside the west wing savannah. All right, peter, thank you another big headline this morning, the criminal case against michael flynn, the former National Security adviser, has been dropped. What can you tell us about that. This is an Important Development we just saw happen here the Justice Department has now moved to drop its case against flynn who pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contact with russias ambassador to the u. S. , fired by the president. Afte a review concluded flynn should never have been charged in the first place, arguing his statements were not material, not central to any investigation the fbi was conducting the president , who has been considering a pardon for flynn, he welcomed the news, praising flynn as a great warrior all of this is stunning reversal by the doj, igniting with officials that attorney general barr and the Justice Department are bowing to political pressure savannah. All right Peter Alexander with the relentless from the white house. Peter, thank you 7 15 hoda, back to you. Savannah, we have a lot to get to this morning, including the first on camera interview with the woman who accused joe biden of sexual assault. Nbc washington correspondent Andrea Mitchell has more on the claims shes making. Hey, andrea, good morning. Reporter good morning, hoda. Tara reades comments are her first on camera response to joe bidens strong denial of her assault allegation just a week ago with Mika Brzezinski on msnbc. As the Biden Campaign points out inconsistencies in reades account over the year. She thinks biden should exit the president ial race. Doesnt think that will happen a warning to some of our viewers, some of the language is graphic. In her response to bidens denial tara reade emotionally deciding what she said happened in the spring of 1993, describing being asked to bring then senator joe biden a gym bag in his Senate Office building. He greeted me he remembered my name. I said, here you go, senator i handed him the bag it happened very quickly. She alleges biden pushed her up against the wall in the and hands under her clothes. He had his hands underneath senate corridor and put his hands under my clothes. He had his hands underneath my clothes it happened all at once. He had one hand underneath my shirt and the other hand, i had a skirt on, and he went down my skirt and then up. Reade claiming he pulled back when she resisted. He pointed his finger at me and said youre nothing to me. Youre nothing i think thats the hardest thing. Biden has consistently denied these claims, repeating his denial thursday when asked about her new comments. In every case the truth is what matters in this case the truth is these claims are flat out false. A year ago reade was among several women who said biden had touched them inappropriately in a nonsexual manner biden later vowing to be more respectful of peoples personal space. In march, for the first time publicly, reade came forward with her assault claim she also said she had filed a complaint with the senate that did not mention assault. No complaint has been filed. The Biden Campaign issuing a statement thursday saying every day more and more inconsistencies arise. Women must receive the benefit of the doubt they must be able to come forward and share their stories without fear of retribution or harm, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that. At the same time, we can never sacrifice the truth. Asked if she would take a polygraph, tara reade said victims of violence should not have to and shes not a criminal but she would take one if biden did. Only portions of reades conversation with megyn kelly were posted online so far. Biden says no one recalls hearing about such an incident the lawyers who vetted biden for Vice President said they found no misconduct of any kind. All right Andrea Mitchell for us in washington, d. C. Andrea, thank you. Let us switch gears now. Time to get a check of the weather, including, yup, the story weve been talking about all week, the polar vortex for mothers day weekend what a gift, al. Its the gift that keeps giving, guys ahead of that weve got Severe Weather going on right now part of the same system thats eventually going to be affecting the northeast. Tesla says it will resume limited factory operations in fremont after the state lifted covid19 restrictions for manufacturing. However, by reopening, tesla could be in violation of Alameda Countys shelter in place order which is still in effect. The Sheriffs Office tells reuters that the state order announced yesterday does not supersede the county order. In an email obtained by cnbc tesla told employees only about 30 of the workforce will return on a given shift. Cnbc points out its not clear how tesla can build vehicles with that reduced head count. Reporter counties around the bay area are having different coronavirus experiences, and thats why the restrictions are a little different by county. A good reminder, hoda, about so many nurses who have come to new york to work on the front lines and left their families behind incredible purchase on top of it all, their sign says, thank you, new york, which is really pretty incredible it is they are lets get to the headlines at 7 30 and well get you the latest on the coronavirus total number of cases in the u. S. Has climbed to nearly 1. 3 million. The number of deaths now approaches 77,000 people. Frontier airlines will implement mandatory temperature checks on passengers prior to boarding its the first u. S. Airline to announce such a measure. Those checks will start june 1st. Starting monday amtrak will require passengers to wear face coverings on trains and stations ride share announced its passengers and drivers will also be required to wear masks. Well have more on all that in our next half hour. Right now, more of our ongoing series on solutions. Savannah, you spoke exclusively to Melinda Gates. Thats right. For more than 20 years, she and her husband have dedicated their lives and money to Global Health fighting Infectious Diseases through the bill and Melinda Gates shes traveled the world working on vaccines force diseases like malaria. And tube tuberculosis m now they are laser focused on coronavirus. They have committed more than 3 million to find a vaccine. I spoke to her about where that stands a mainly weakness in the economy she believes we have a chance to she believes we have a chance to address right now. As you survey the scene of where we are right now in this pandemic, do you feel confident about our trajectory do you feel like theres a plan . I feel like we still are at the beginning stages of this pandemic, weve seen the first part of it to reopen we need to do far more testing and tracing, and we need to be very careful and go very slowly as we reopen. You should never be reopening in places where youve got accelerating disease. Lets talk about the search for a vaccine, the Gates Foundation, you and your husband, bill gates, are very much in the forefront. You put your money where your mouth is trying to find a vaccine. Whats the status of that right now . Well, i think just as youre hearing from everybody else, its about 12 to 18 months we get information pretty much on a daily basis about the various vaccine candidates that are moving through that pipeline luckily its looking like there are a few good candidates. To be frank, thats a relief there was a report that the administration has a initiative operation warp speed and the goal is quite ambitious, to have hundreds of millions of vaccine doses as early as january. I asked dr. Fauci is that even in the realm of the possible, he said it was. So it may be possible. Do you think its likely, knowing what you know about the search for a vaccine you know, boy, that would be lucky to have hundreds of millions of doses by january im not sure how likely that is. These things take time, because. Im hopeful. But when i say its likely, might hesitate a bit on that one. This p we have to know they are safe. Im hopeful. But when i say its likely, might hesitate a bit on that one. This pandemic has certainly exposed weaknesses and strengths. Youre focusing on one of the weaknesses thats been exposed here, and thats how we take care of our caregivers why did you decide to take on this issue if were going to look at reopening our economy, we have to take care of our most essential workers. 85 of nurses are women, and yet who is the primary caregiver at home women. Who is the primary one for educating the kids women. What are the ramifications of that for society if the burden is falling so disproportionately on women. When care giving falls to women, what happens is they then cant go do their jobs in society. They start to lose income. Their families start to lose income we have to look at what are solutions. There are policy, Business Solutions that can help. Whats the number one policy that congress could enact to alleviate this burden on caregivers. They need to start looking at a paid family medical leave policy we are the only the only industrialized nation in the world that does not have paid family medical leave, and that needs to change. When resources are already so strained, its quite ambitious to say now is the time we need more paid leave. How do you get people to want to act on this now at a time when frankly they feel nervous about this i think weve always had this false narrative of this is expensive so were not going to do it. This is already costing us it is costing us our health. You have to address this piece if you want to have health care fundamental to actually reopening the economy. You made no secret to your disagreement with the white house a workers, nurses out there, will you made no secret of funding for th World Health Organization. Do you find any fault with how the World Health Organization has conducted itself in the pandemic, particularly in the beginning stages its not a perfect institution. No institution is perfect. I think there will be time to go back and do a postmortem when we come out of this crisis. But i dont believe with my institution you do a postmortem while youre in the crisis. Your husband famously warned about a pandemic back in 2015. He said then we werent prepared even so, are you surprised at how the u. S. Has responded are you surprised we werent better prepared . Im both surprised we werent better prepared. But quite honestly, im surprised we wasted so much time, that we havent had leadership at the National Level to get out tests in the right way, protective gear in the right way, Contact Tracing in the right way. With lack of leadership, there are 50 home grown state solutions. That just shouldnt be germany with national leadership, they were able to keep certain sectors of the economy open safely, keep people safe, mostly social distancing, and now start to slowly reopen based on the science thats the kind of leadership we should expect as citizens in this country and were not getting it we havent gotten it yet during this crisis, so youre seeing whats happening, and its chaos. Thats pretty blunt do you lay the blame at the feet of the Trump Administration . Im disappointed in what im seeing, yes. What gives you hope right now . I get amazing hope and inspiration from the Frontline Health care workers who are going in and doing their jobs every day in very difficult circumstances. Then i get massive hope talking to the scientists and the many partners from industry when i see people coming together in collaboration to do the right thing, to share the science, to share what we do know and learn, thats the best of humanity, and it makes me hopeful and makes me know we are going to get out of this pandemic its really interesting to hear her talk about some of the vaccine candidates that nobody wants to put the cart before the horse but saying there are a few that look very promising so its very hopeful, because they are watching all these different trials that are happening. They are funding a lot of it so they really know whats happening with the search for a vaccine. She sounded cautiously optimistic i thoroughly enjoyed hearing what she had to say on paid family medical leave and you either pay for it on the front end or the back end as well. Shes definitely fired up, a big advocate a lot of people are talking about that Sheryl Sandberg from facebook just wrote something on the same topic. Care giving and how we care for our caregivers, really relevant issue, more relevant than ever, when we see so many people having to take care of seniors, also taking care of their kids and having to do their jobs as well. Good conversation youd be hard pressed to find anyone putting more money where their mouth is than the Gates Foundation more news, nfl releasing that schedule for the 2020 season hoda kotb, big news coming out of that because drew brees, your guy taking on tom brady. Weve got some encouraging news for fans who are absolutely starving for sports. There are millions of them. Several nba teams are opening their practice facilities today. Overnight the nfl released its schedule for the 2020 season and has a lot of people hoping actual games wont be far behind nbcs sam brock is in miami with more on all of it. Hey, sam guys, good morning. At least three nba teams say they will be resuming practice today. The miami heat placed in that arena behind me. The question is how is this going to work . Nba insiders say the basketball has to be disinfected every time a new player steps on the court. The league is ready to launch but details need to be worked out. The schedule is out. In a blockbuster reveal nfl announced its 2020 schedule with legendary Quarterback Tom Brady and drew brees slated to square off in week one. Brees and brady, oh, my god who is the unadulterated g. O. A. T. What will that look like . I think the American Sports experience will be different, at least shortterm the experience that weve come to know, 70, 80,000 people in a stadium, sitting shoulder to shoulder, is not likely to return in the very near future. On the hardwood, the nba would normally be in the second round of its playoff instead, teams can reopen practice courts today if their states allow it. Texas doesnt yet and mavs owner mark cuban says hes in no rush. Its not going to happen. The problem, obviously, because we cant test people, then we cant assure anybodys safety whether they are basketball players or anybody else. I dont think the risk is worth the reward. Three teams have confirmed they are giving it a go, portland trail blazer, denver nugget and Cleveland Cavaliers with only four players practicing on the court at a time among other rules. They have to wash the ball with a certain recipe of a disinfectant every time. They have to do it every time a player comes onto the court. The leagues Player Association calling today tolea association calling today to hash this hash this out. Major League Baseball would be more than a mont into the season. Our return is going to be controlled by safety. Now the league expected to float a plan to its Players Association on how to resume nascar is racing forward with no fans in the stands, hitting the track next weekend at Darlington Raceway in south carolina. The pga tour set to resume june 8th but only with testing and other criteria in place. We will not be executing testing if it in any way is going to limit testing for critical need in our country other countries may be able to give america a roadmap for a responsible return south korea bringing back baseball already and german about to kick off its soccer season, the first league in europe to do so in a week. Guys, back to you. Sam brock for us there in miami. Sam, thank you it looks like for some sports its going to be a lot easier than other sports. Nascar and golf one thing. Football, basketball, Something Else entirely. Thank you. Craig, were you super excited to find out about the football schedule i was in fact, i found myself watching about 90 minutes worth of people talking about a football schedule it was quite comical. I think the only game you have to worry about is the first one. Dont you think . Bradybrees. Thats going to be a good one. Another reason weve got to get sports back. Lets turn to al and get a check of the weather whats shaking for our friends in florida, they are going to be looking at a lot of wet weather this weekend. We begin with the economy, the crushing impact of the pandemic and the growing efforts to rebound from it. The latest jobless numbers are like nothing this country has ever seen before. Nbcs tom costello joins us with the three things hes watching today. Tom, good morning. Savannah, good morning. The numbers just out from the Labor Department tell a story. 14. 7 unemployment in april. 25 million americans out of work. Thats the official number. Actually better than what the forecasts were, but most experts believe the real number is higher. We could have 20 unemployment or even worse. The numbers are staggering. As you know, Many Americans are turning to food banks to feed their families. Most economists believe the Recovery Process will be a very slow one. Meanwhile by the weekend, more than 40 states will now start to ease off on the stayathome restrictions. All of them taking their own pace but its going to be a long process as well. California is now allowing Clothing Stores and florists to reopen just in time for mothers day but Curbside Pickup only. In new york where the death toll has topped 20,000, we can tell you theres no sign yet the restrictions will be eased. Covid19 cases also now surging in several midwestern states. Those now are starting to reopen as well. A military aide to President Trump has tested positive for covid19. Hes a navy valet with access to the oval office. He actually served the president lunch. Nbc news has learned when the president was informed of this, he was, quote, lava level mad. He said, allegedly, that he does not believe that his staff is doing all they can to protect him. Nbcs Peter Alexander asked the president about the exposure. Did it spook you . Yeah, its a little bit strange, but its one of those things. Ive had very little contact, personal contact with this gentleman. Know who he is, good person, but ive had very little contact. Both the president and the Vice President have repeatedly tested negative for covid19. Hoda, back to you. All right, tom, thank you. Now to the overnight arrest of a father and son in georgia charged with murder in the february shooting of an unarmed black man. Nbcs blayne alexander has the very latest on this case, including the possible role last week had to play in it blayne, good morning. Hoda, good morning to you yeah, that video, i spoke with the attorney for the arbery family overnight he told me that video was absolutely essential and leading to these arrests he believes today we plan to learn more about the overnight arrests. Gregory mcmichael, former Law Enforcement officer and his son travis arrested overnight over the shooting of ahmaud arbery. The shooting happened in february but it was the video released this week that sparked nationwide outrage and showed the events leading up to that shooting mcmichael said in the Police Report they were following arbery because they believed he was a burglary suspect arberys family said he was unarmed and out for a sunday afternoon jog. Later today we see a virtual run in georgia and around the country in arberys honor along with a number of protest for what would have been his 26th birthday. Blayne alexander in georgia blayne, thank you. Meanwhile mass transit has been a life line during this pandemic for people like hospital workers and First Responders and others who just need to get to the supermarket but Health Officials worry that trains and buses are also perfect environments for spreading the coronavirus. Nbcs tech correspondent joins us with a closer look at this story. Jake, good morning to you. Good morning, craig thats right this is how thousands of First Responders get to work and how millions of us get to the doctors office, the grocery store, the pharmacy. Mass transit really is a necessity for an incredible number of americans. But who is keeping us safe along the way . How do we get around in the age of coronavirus with huge numbers of people unemployed or working at home, fewer americans are taking mass transit. Roughly 90 fewer people are taking the train in cities like new york, chicago, San Francisco. Amtrak reports ridership down by 95 and will soon require masks on its platforms and trains. Bike share systems are reporting record numbers riders in chicago and new york more than doubled in a single week in march. The best way to maintain social distance and avoid contaminated surfaces is to drive my own car lets say i dont have a car, and i need to get to my job as a nurse or janitor or firefighter, Ride Share Services are trying to adapt lyft announced riders and drivers must commit to wearing a mask and drivers should sanitize their vehicles between rides uber is making similar recommendations. The cheaper pool rides are no longer an option about if youre willing to wait a little longer lyft will cut the price. Its a feature that allows you to accept a longer wait time in order to optimize the matching, and for that you get a lower price. What about those who take a train or a bus even though cdc recommends all transit passengers wear a mask, many systems dont require it. Its extremely dangerous for the operators because of the fact that buses are overcrowded, a lot of operators dont want to come to work. Nationwide more than 100 transit workers have died of detroit bus driver Jason Hargrove who posted this message about unmasked passengers coughing on his bus. For us to get through this and get over this, man, you need to take this serious. He died 11 days later detroits Bus Drivers Union said its drivers are being given masks and gloves and buses are cleaned more frequently between shifts craig, while major cities, new york city, San Francisco, san diego all have strict requirements we should wear masks when we get on their buses, those regulations vary from city to city and town to town because there is no federal agency that makes the rules for federal transit. Patchwork of requirements jake for us on this friday thank you. Its 8 09 weve got our news covered a couple of good morning boosts. Janet, a mail carrier. She became an overpass sensation when she pulled up in her truck and photo bombed two girls making a tiktok dance video. Sunshine f good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. As we take a live look outside, were getting ready for a hot day today in san jose. Were going to see our High Temperature reaching 92 degrees. And up to 95 in the inland east bay. 94 in concord. And napa today will reach 92 degrees. But it will be cooler along the coastline. Our inland areas will have the biggest changes, and cooling down for the weekend. Expect highs in the upper 70s in time for mothers day and possibly some rain early next week. Thats your latest weather guys. All right, al thank you. As the world battles a Global Pandemic today, it will pause to remember a victory over another brutal enemy 75 years ago, fascism. Thats right. Today is victory in europe day or ve day, the moment that marked the end of the fight against nazi, germany, in world war ii harry smith caught up with some of the men who were there on that day he joins us with a lesson they learned as we fight a different war. They sure know about hard times, harry. Imagine what they all went through all those years ago. That experience, along with another 75 years of life on this planet, can give you some wisdom, and they would like to share it with us. Every man, woman, and child is in action. World war ii. Perhaps its not too much of an exaggeration to suggest all of americas hearts beat as one. It is for victory. Im going to tell you something roosevelt said just prior to our all enlisting to get into the army, air corps, navy, marines, wherever. Paul grassy was with the 8th army air force. Theres a mysterious cycle in human events some generations, much is given. Other generations, much is expected this generation of americans has a rendezvous with destiny. He was right, but i didnt know we were going to get hit again with this thing that were going through. I think that generation had faith. Im not speaking of religious faith but in the cause and each other. A Senior Historian at the World War Ii Museum in new orleans. There was a propaganda there was a propaganda poster at the time, youve seen it, rosie the riveter, were all in this together. Americans thought we were in this together. We thought it was extremely important, because we were out to save the world. These men know, they fought in the air, on the land, and on the sea. Ed tried to join the navy but was turned away, poor eyesight. It made me fear some i would be rejected. The Army Air Corps accepted him. They were fairly desperate. They took me, glasses and all. Reporter drafted or enlisted, all knew the stakes, as high as they come. Without United States on the ground, the europe we know now wouldnt exist by the europe we know now, i mean liberal democracies, open societies. Many took their inspiration from their american occupier after world war ii ken with the 8th army air force. Without the air force, the invasion would have been a real tough nut to crack. The action was brutal u. S. Bombers took extremely heavy casualties on the beach heads and on the ground, from dday and the battle of the bulge, men died by the tens of thousands. The allies announced germans surrendered unconditionally. The war in europe is over. Navy man Peter Orlando knew just what to do. He asked permission to go ashore to attend mass, he said. My buddy and i jumped the truck and went to paris. We had the time of our life. I came back to the ship two days later, and im going up the gang plank and the officer is leaning and said, how was mass ill never forget it. Army mortar man had taken refuge at a castle in belgium. I broke into tears. I cried like a baby. Somebody had a radio going and they said the war was over i broke into tears i cried like a baby. The war was over. In europe, yes, but japan would not surrender until august yet victory was in reach for people with a common goal and a common purpose. They described folks like you, the greatest generation. I have read the book, yes greatness is thrust upon you. The difference between today and then is that we need to be together against the virus in world war ii, we won that war in 3 1 2 years, and we got to rebuild america. This is what we have to do right now. Everybody to get back in business as he said, this is what weve got to do right now, hoda. That was beautiful, harry, as usual. Thank you so much. Now were moving to something new and exciting weve missed all those moments on the plaza so this morning, what do we have we have our very first today virtual plaza. Check out these smiling faces. California, texas, massachusetts, all joining us on the big board. Raise your hand if you miss al roker. Of course. I see a we love al roker sign. Were going to mute you. We need to shout ought a couple of you where is myomi she wrote to us about her mom who is turning 60. They wanted to come to the plaza. We actually get to be on the virtual plaza, which is better, and be together as a family, which is really awesome. It is our pleasure. We want to wish you a happy 60th birthday we have more people were going to get to. Were going to take a little commercial break and keep the fun going. Dont go away. We have a good gender reveal coming up. Well be right back at right after this good morning to you. Its 8 26. Im marcus washington. The second phase of californias reopening process is beginning to kick in in some counties. And for people looking to enjoy the weekend outdoors, the good news is more parks will be open. The bad news is, in some cases, youre not wanted there. San mateo county still has the tenmile rule in effect meaning you have to live within the vicinity of that area or park that youre visiting. Not so in contra costa as well as alameda counties where some east bay parks locations still have walkin access. County restrictions vary so make sure you check before you head out. Lets get a look at the forecast. If you head out today, be prepared for the heat. Right, kari . Yes, you want to get outside early before it gets really hot. In fact, some of us may be very close to some record High Temperatures for this afternoon as we check out our highs in santa rosa. Were going to reach up to 91 degrees and the record is 93. Were also going to be close to those records elsewhere for our inland areas. And if youre going to be out there, make sure that you are taking care of yourself drinking lots of water. Keep a cool towel on your neck and take care of children and pets. Ill have another update with the sevenday forecast coming up in a few minutes. Well have another local news update coming up in the next half hour. Im lester holt. For all my colleagues at nbc news, take care. We are back 8 30 now its a friday morning. The eighth day of may, 2020. As we look ahead it is the 8th day of may we look to mothers day weekend. Speaking of mothers day, carson daly has a special edition of pop start to start early. Calling it mom start. And celebrating a family of nurses so devoted to both jobs we had to find a special way to say thank you. First, we want to share the story of some four legged friends that are giving support to our Nations Health care heroes Cynthia Mcfadden has that story. Cynthia, good morning. Reporter good morning. I really love this story last year, we went out to a max security prison where inmates raised service dogs for First Responders and veterans. Now those same pups are providing a helping paw to those on the frontlines battling the coronavirus. When the world stopped, these nurses didnt. I have not had any days off as of yet. I worked straight through. Reporter amy left her fiance and two kids in indiana to help in new york city never seen so much loss, dealt with so much death in such a short amount of time. Reporter every day a roller coaster of emotions. I can go from laughing one minute to the next minute sitting in the bathroom crying reporter now at the end of the 14 hour days, those comforting the sick are getting a bit of comfort of their own. No words needed. The visits got rolling a couple weeks ago when New York National guard reached out to see if service dogs could visit their troops were just giving to these soldiers and these nurses who are going through hell the opportunity to unwind, to kiss a dog, get a dogs kiss in return. Reporter youre going to make me cry. I know. Im trying not to. Reporter as a stress buster, it seems to be working the dogs understand they feel how im feeling, and they want me to feel better. Reporter the dogs are part of the not for profit puppies behind bars. We visited them last year. Puppies raised to be service dogs for First Responders and veterans the trainers, inmates at maximum Security Prisons like this one north of new york city before they graduate, they know nearly 100 commands. What is it about dogs and these dogs in particular that deeply touches human beings. Since they enter prison at 8 weeks and live there two to three years, they have grown up with people that need them they just sense that theres an emotional need that they fill. Reporter from the dogs point of view, hard to argue the dogs are exhausted. At the end of two hours, you would think they climbed mount everest. Reporter they did something even more awesome. Brought a little joy into a world very much in need of some. This is giving back to us, too. It is a way of us being able to do something reporter this morning, maybe even cat people feel a little dog person inside, right, ernie . Oh oh, love ernie. That was great, great, great, cynthia. When you think about it too, th. Just w First Responders probably want a hug. Everyone says i wish i could get a hug. Just what we needed coming up, todays virtual plaza. The first time we tried Something Like this, we cant get outside, so we decided to bring the plaza inside well get to that in a moment. Mr. Roker, how about a check of the mothers day forecast . A storm from the gulf coast heat expands out west. Moving into saturday, snowy from new york state into Northern New England. Record lows in the Midatlantic States, great lakes. Warm out west. Showers making it through the planes the chill continues mothers day. Record lows in the Midatlantic States in the northeast, wet weather around the great lakes, heavy rain through florida expect plenty of sunshine from the gulf coast into the southwest with a few showers more sunshine making its way into the Pacific Northwest sunny skies all the way down to san diego and los angeles with temperatures still above the warmer side. Well be watching that the big concern mothers day is in florida talking anywhere from three to five inches of rain, there could be flooding. Good news if there is any, good morning. Im meteorologist kari hall. Today its going to be really hot with High Temperatures reaching up to 94 degrees. A lot of our inland areas. By tomorrow, we start to feel cooling with low 80s. In time for mothers day, we have upper 70s for highs in the forecast. Next week were looking at a chance of showers off and on rain possible. And for San Francisco, were coming off of those high 70s, or highs in the 70s to some 60s over the next several days. And thats your latest weather. Guys, happy mothers day. All right, al thank you. Just ahead, a moment weve bp waiting for all morning. Were going to introduce you to a family of nurses led by a mom who inspired her daughters and soninlaw to follow in her footsteps. They have no idea we are about to give them an early mothers day gift but first, this is today on nbc. [music] [music] especially in times like these, strong Public Schools make a better california for all of us. Announcer thank a nurse today is created by today with our sponsor, ford, built ford announcer thank a nurse today is created by today with our sponsor, ford, built ford proud. And we are back with our special series, thank a nurse today. Something special to wrap up National Nurses week, savannah. Yeah, we have a good story. Nursing is a Family Affair for a group were about to introduce you to three nurses that followed their mom into the career they all loved. This year as they fight on the front lines, mothers day is taking on added meaning. Early on Rosemary Whitman knew her calling. My grandmother had been very sick and i helped care for her with my mom. So thats probably my major reason for choosing nursing. And for the past nearly 37 years, shes been caring for patients at bostons Brigham Young hospital. Nursing is truly a profession that you absolutely have to have your heart in it 100 . Today shes the matriarch of the family on the front lines fighting covid19 pandemic, bringing daughters christina and katie and even soninlaw brad to work in the Family Business all four at the same boston hospital. I decided to be a nurse because my role model and inspiration in life was a nurse, so i just wanted to follow in her footsteps. I think i also kind of had a nurturing tendency i have been on the same floor for 13 years now, and i still love work every day. Brad joins them after a career change. She put the bug in my ear to be a nurse if she didnt kind of encourage me, i dont know where i would be. Rosemary would often work nights and weekends so she could be home with her family. She was always there. When we got home from school, you did your homework, watched tv, and we all had dinner together as a family we used to think moms worked weekends and dads worked weekdays because mom worked weekends we thought that was normal growing up. To make up for missed time, special trips to visit mom at work. Sometimes for ten minutes, sometimes half an hour but at least id get to see them. Especially on holidays. Youd see them walking up on the holidays with handmade gifts. Many times id go down and spend time in the cafeteria for them to give me my mothers day gift. Trips that made an impression. I remember my daughter saying, mom, i want to be a nurse. I used to say to myself, we have a long way to go here, but it never stopped. I always knew i wanted to be a nurse at a young age going to visit at the hospital my mom really emphasized that more she was somebody i wanted to emulate. It was never a question of what.
