Changes when they return to job sites. Ppe, everybodys got to have gear, the mask, gloves, sanitizer, its got to be real soap and water stations that are available to people. There are no groups together. And they are not required to take their temperature on the job. Were ready to go with our programs, with our protocols, we just need to get our people trained up. The revised order will also allow gardeners to get back to work. And all real estate transactions now have a green light. Even if open houses dont. Santa clara county Health Officer dr. Sara cody says her office will be monitoring cases to see if the reduced restrictions leads to a surge. Our goal is to carefully chart a course forward that is overall most health protective and we need to balance the health risks of covid19 with the health risks of shelter in place. In san jose, marianne favro, nbc bay area news. She mentioned it briefly, we will expand on, it and look closely at the indicators bay area counties are using when they decide what can reopen and when. First, they need a decrease in cases. Also, fewer hospitalizations. Enough ppe. Enough testing. And the capacity to monitor new cases and do contact tracing. As Governor Newsom said today, the data is guiding his decision. The latest data from Santa Clara County. We are flattening the curve, you can see the total cases here, reported, increased significantly, a big rise here, all the way up, from march, through early april. But since mid april, the cases have slowly increased, and almost flattened out at 2,000 reported cases. Heres another look now. This time, the new cases, a lot of spikes until mid april. Up and down, you can see the spikes here, and there is mid april there, and now, generally, the number of new cases each day is tapering off. Heres the tapering effect, as we go through late april. Another important note, dr. Sara cody says even though the south bay reported the first covid19 death, and had the most cases early on, Santa Clara County has less than 5 of the total cases reported in california. In San Francisco, which is really crowded and compact, many cheering relaxed rules on open fields and spays including skate masks as well as people wear marches and practice social distancing but some complain the new order radio lacks a lot of specifics what else will reopen. And the mayor is vowing to help clear up confusion in the days ahead. Im committed to not only get through these next few weeks, but also making sure that we are able to provide you all with a little more guidance, a little more certainty, and understanding about exactly what could potentially be open. One point of confusion. Golf courses. The new local order says they can reopen, but the states guidelines say they shouldnt. The governor sort of weighed in today during the Daily Press Briefing saying the new bay area order is generally consistent with the state order, suggesting he wont fight it. Now, if you want to see the details of the new rules for yourself, we made it easy to read the full order on our web site, nbc bay area. Com. Just into our newsroom, new restrictions in santa cruz, they will plan on making that weekend trip to the beach. The beaches will be offlimits, closed, from 11 00 a. M. To 5 00 p. M. , beginning this saturday. They want to avoid the large crowds that flock to the beaches last weekend. And so heres the deal. Santa cruz county Sheriffs Office says they issued 210 citations, outside those times, beaches will be open for people exercising only. Surfing, paddle boarding, and boogie boarding is allowed. Well, fighting the coronavirus, today, the biggest evidence yesterday, it worked, a drug developed gy Gilead Sciences across the city. We talked about the drug many times and now new information that is very promising. Jessica joins us from home with the details. Well, raj, and janelle, rem democrats d rem democrats desivir was used to. The White House Task force, dr. Fauci called it a major milestone in the fight against covid19. Lets talk a little bit about that Clinical Trial. A thousand people, patients, from multiple places around the world, took part in the study. The patients either received remdesivir or a placebo. Those who got remdesivir recovered much faster, able to leave the hospital 11 days on average. The people who got the placebo, they had to stay for 15 days. We think it is really opening the door to the fact that now we now have the capability of treating, and i can guarantee you as more people, more companies, more investigators get involved, it will get better and better. Okay, so better and better. Thats what we want it hear. Joining me now is dr. Peter jenhung, from ucsf, an Infectious Disease personal lift. Thank you again for being with us, doctor. I know that you said, you have treated, already, patients with this remdesivir, what have you found when you treated them . Again, my experience being, that is the reason why we need to study this, because my experience is anecdotal, but in my own experience, the first covid patient that i took care of was a patient i was able to get remdesivir for and last week, a patient came in, requiring ventilation, and now is doing really well with minimal oxygen. Soso far, it has been great, and few side effects, and it seems to be working, in our experience. But again, we need to have that data analyzed as well. Now, gilead today issued some findings about it, and it said that the drug actually had the ability to block the virus. What exactly does that mean . Blocking the virus means that you stop the virus from making more children. Its kind of like a virus stun gun. It doesnt help the organs that are already damaged. So there is a signal that theyre using it a little bit early, before the organ damage is good, but even after you use it late, you stun the virus from making more children, so it gives the organs more time to heal. And which patients have you found are the most, that react the best to this kind of medication, this drug . So far, the patients that have been eligible for the trial are the sickest patient, as we usually start, when we study a drug, so theyre usually the people in the intensive care units, who are on a breathing tube, theyre on medicines to help their Blood Pressure stay high, and not the average hospitalized patient. Okay, dr. Chinhong, thank you thank you very much for being with us. The doctor will be back coming up at 6 00, to talk about the availability of this drug. And whether other drugs will be used as well, alongside this. So well check back with you, coming up at 6 00, to talk more about what this new standard of care is going to be like, with this drug manufactured here in the bay area. Raj and janelle . Good insight from the doctor. Thanks, jessica. By the end of this week, one in three americans will no longer have the strict shelter at home order. President trump is not renewing the nationwide shelter in place policy. The policies expire at midnight tomorrow night. Now, the president says he wants to leave it up to the governors of the various states to decide what is best for their state. The decision comes as the president hopes to be combin re, begin reopening our county. New data shows the gdp fell 4. 8. Nthe first quarter, the worst drop since the 2008 recession. Making sure no one goes hungry during the pandemic, Governor Newsom laid out a threepart plan to field californians in need. A new program will provide benefi benefits for 2. 3 million children, and families who normally get the school meals will get extra money to help buy good while schools remain closed. Calfresh can use the card online to buy groceries online through amazon and walmart. And farmers will be connected to food banks to deliver nutritious meals to those most in need. A mother in the east bay says her Daughters School district shot down the pitch to have a Graduation Ceremony in the summer but now governor new sorm could open up schools this summer and does that mean canceled grad ceremonies have a fight chance . Here is nbc bay area melissa colorado. Reporter oh, my god. Im going to cry. I mean im so sad. Reporter to understand why a high school Graduation Ceremony means so much to Angela Mitchell of almeda, consider the fact that her youngest daughter is the only one of her four kids to graduate from high school. She aid im going to walk across the stage, mom, youre going to see me. The coronavirus pandemic squashed that promise. No prom. No Graduation Ceremony. Just the class of 2020 sign with her daughters name. It was so personal. Mitchell started brain storming and reached out to the almeda unified School District with ang idea. Here is Angela Mitchells proposal. A small Graduation Ceremony here at the High School Football field where there is plenty of open space for the seniors to sit six feet apart and parents can sit and watch from the bleachers. What did the district tell you . No. They sent out an email and said the proposal was denied. On tuesdays, Governor Newsom unveiled the reopening plan telling parents and students that school might be back in session as early as late july. The superintendent of the almeda unified School District says his hands are tied. The logistics, combined with the spirit of the order, just does not leave us feeling like we could be confident that we can do something safely. In almeda, melissa colorado, nbc bay area news. Up next, frustrated with the time line, a bay area gym owner struggling to keep his doors from closing permanently, before hes allowed to reopen. Jessica will rejoin us. But surprise, how 2 million of steaks ended up at bay area food banks. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, big cooling and clouds today. Ill show you how much sunshine for tomorrow. And what is next for the weekend. Thats coming up. In about seven minutes. Across america, Business Owners are figuring things out. Finding new ways to serve customers. Connect employees. Nail salon, hair salons and gym, and jessica is back with us. Gyms, a threemonth closure could put them simply out of business. Totally, raj. No money coming in and the bills stacking up and no money from the fed or the state and that is the fate of the small independent gyms. Theyre having a tough time. And today almeda county came out and reiterated what the governor said yesterday, that phase three gyms will not be opening unany time soon. And for small independent gym owners that could be the nail in the coffin. Paul rubio owns three east bay gyms and theyre usually teaming with clients but since the shelter at home came down weeks ago. The gyms hav i shortly, we have in monthly donations that members have been so nice to give us. Other than that, we have nothing. We were billing over 100,000 prior to covid19 a month. And were billing about 1200 right now. So heres the position. He says if the governor wants to keep his doors closed, the governor needs to do something about the fact to keep his bills at bay. Hes talking landlords. Everything else. He says he cant survive under the current situation. He also said he had membership cancellations, about 40 of those, and so each when he does open his, even when he does open his doors, if he can open his door, he is not going to be breaking even at the beginning, so he says the state needs to step in to help him and other Business Owners like him. Now, coming up at 6 00, we will continue talking to paul about what he plans to do to try to keep his doors open and what kind of financial help he is looking for. Raj and janelle . Those are big numbers. And he was billing 100,000 a month and now to 1200 in donations . Yes. Exactly. And not getting any reprieve. Hardly anything from his landlord. And the bills keep coming in. I mean he is really looking affiliaat, he cant survive another couple of months. A lot of people in that boat, thank you, jessica. Some unusual situations on 880, chp stopped traffic after a man jumped out, started throwing masks on the road and drivers pulled over and got out of their cars to pick them up. Luckily no one was hurt. And as you just saw, you can see, the masks were spread all over. A 2 million example of how this pandemic is shaking up a local food bank in a good way. Thousands of steaks were looking to go to high end bay area restaurant, the fancy steak, but the restaurants are no longer open, so idahos steak river farms is donating two million bucks of the top shelf beef and a new volunteer group has the tricky task of distributing it. Neighbors helping neighbors all across the city. We got over a folks signed up with us, to help us distribute from places like l. A. Casino, and they can help get the steaks to people who need them. Fancy steaks. Most of the steaks will go to the San Francisco food bank, together at best, the volunteers there will fan out and deliver to meals on wheels, and self help for the elderly, and public housing. And i always wondered is it wegu or wagu . I do not know. What a nice surprise. All of those residents in San Francisco who normally dont eat none of that kind of stuff. None of us do. And to get that surprise, such a treat. That is nice. They deserve it. I know. I only saw it recently, because it was one of the only things that was left online to buy because it is so expensive. And i will that same conversation. You could have a good dinner tonight. How do you say it . We did not end up getting it. Either or. And you know, we had the sun and hot temperatures yesterday. Today, it is the reverse. We had the coldest temperature, and the cloud cover moving in. In a big, big temperature drop. Look at this, were down 14 degrees cooler in livermore. San jose, down 10. Oakland, 6. Santa rosa at 5. And we had the ocean breeze coming in strong at 28 miles an hour. So with that strong ocean breeze, its really ushering in that cool air throughout the bay area. So we have that setup happening. Then will take you to the wider view and we can show you what is happening as we head through tomorrow. We are noting some rain here. Off to the north. Going to be impacting seattle and portland. That system is going to stay away from us. I still definitely think we will be caught up in this mild flow with a little bit of wind on and off at times. So tomorrow morning, we had some clouds back near the coast. Also right here towards the bay, rye around hayward, oakland, berkeley, but not as extensive so i think we will have sunshine tomorrow morning. Heres the good deal. We get the sun returning for the afternoon as well. So temperatures tomorrow morning, a little bit colder, with less cloud cover. And we will bring it down to 49 in the trivalley. South bay at 52. And 53 in the east bay. With some patchy fog right near the bay. And down to 48 in the north bay. As we move through tomorrow, we are looking at that sunshine. As we talked about. All the way through the afternoon. And numbers really dont budge a whole lot. They only rise about a degree or two. So that keeps us very, very comfortable. And down in the south bay, 74 here in san jose. Right over to the east bay, concord, pittsburg, antioch, temperatures all in the upper 70s. Walnut creek at 74. Oakland at 69. So the bay and the ocean breeze in effect. Thats why you head closer to the ocean, you get the cooler temperatures from that breeze. 67 in san mateo. Down to redwood city. 70 San Francisco. Primarily upper 50s and low 60s. But the mission will be at 66 and downtown at best, 65. And the north bay, 76 in clear lake, and 74 novato. And mill valley, dont forget about you. We have you at 706. The extended forecast, 60s the next seven days and a chance of spotty drizzle on sunday morning. And for the inland valleys, well stay with the 70s and drop it down to 73. By sunday. And then isolated chance of some spotty drizzle. And we go back up to 86 as we hit next wednesday. So i dont know how to pronounce the name of the steaks, but either way, we have warm temperatures next week, good for a barbecue. I was just googling on my phone, it is wagu. Very fancy. I cant even say it. Thank you. If anyone is out there who can help us. Coming up, an entire bay area town, tested for the coronavirus. Why theres some disagreement about the results. Thats next. This virus is testing all of us. And its testing the people on the front lines of this fight most of all. So abbott is getting new tests into their hands, delivering the critical results they need. And until this fight is over, we. Will. Never. Quit. Because they never quit. That could mean an increase byin energy bills. You can save by setting your heat to 68 or lower. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or just letting the sun light your home. Stay well and keep it golden. It is a tino town getting a lot of attention. You might remember how we told you that everyone in bolinas was tested for the coronavirus. Now it seems the results are in but not everyone agrees that theyre accurate. Nbc bay area joe row satto jr. Reports, with more from marin county. The small hamlet of bolinas has long prided itself on being off the beaten path of geography, philosophy and in this time of covid19, the beach town welcome mat firmly rolled up. But last week bolinas was the center of National Attention after it became the first in the u. S. To test its entire population for covid19, through a mass testing paid for with private funding. I think i was one of the first people to sign up. The bolinas resident was one of the first residents that received the test. It was a sign of the town coming together saying we can do this. The Public Health department in marin county says the results are in and no one tested positive, a relief. What i would like to do is start hugging people to celebrate. We cant do that. But ucsf which administered the tests say the results are not final and the analysis is not yet complete. So she got her negative notification, says it is a relief but no time for bolinas to let down its guard, so please kindly stay away. Joe rosato jr. , nbc bay area news. Kindsly stay away. Uhhuh.
