And she pointed out that you have a bowl cut in the film. Heres a photo of you from the film according to maya, from an actual haircut you had for years. That is the haircut that i had until i was 32yearold. Seth 32. I started out with a classic bowl cut that i think everybody goes through a bowl cut phase as a kid but i just never let go. I it turned into, like, a bowl cut mullet version in my high school years. And then i trimmed that down to just, like, a normal bowl with just, like, a little handle on the end. So you could, like like, a bowl you could carry around with your hand. Just a little handle in the back but still very much a bowl cut seth now, it should be note led you astray this was happening, bee were cutting your own hair yes, yes. I decided, why waste all this money on haircutters when i can do it myself beautifully, a beautiful job. [ light laughter ] and so i cut my own mullet in fact, i dont even think i remember trying to go for a mullet i think i just would see hair here and cut the hair here and then just go, oh, i dont really see the hair in the back so i guess i dont have to cut it. Seth when you showed up at snl, it was sort of almost insisted upon that you upgrade your haircut yes so, i get there. Im already just terrified of the whole situation. Nervous about everything and one of the first things they do is they take you down for a photo shoot to take various pictures one of them for this wall of all the performers past and present. And so i get down there. 30 seconds into these photos, they all call a time out to go huddle [ laughter ] and im like, oh, this cannot be good. [ laughter ] they all come over and try to, as gingerly as possible, break the news to me that i had the ugliest haircut theyd ever seen in their lives [ laughter ] so i i went for it. I just allowed you know, i said, jesus, take the wheel. Seth yeah. And they cut it into the, you know, the sexy do that it is right now. Seth you are not known to be a wasteful man you recycle. And you took this as far as your own hair you would cut your hair. And then you saved your hair and you made a gift for your dear friend, my dear friend, john solomon do you want to explain the gift before we show the photo yes so john solomon has been an important person in both of our lives. Yes. You met him when he came to write at saturday night live. Well, ive known him since college, just one of the best people on the planet, funniest, sweetest hes like a brother. So, yeah, you know, i cut my hair and i started saving that hair and eventually made him a wig. And so what i did was i took one of those styrofoam wig heads seth yeah. Put a bald cap on top of that then just a bunch of glue on top of the bald cap, matted down the hair on that and then i made up the rest of the wig head i painted it flesh colored, put a couple of eyes in there. And, yeah, so i presented it to him. And he seth there we go thats the photo of it and so that is all i mean, thats a pretty good likeness. Thats all your actual hair. That is all my actual hair. Ooh, ooh, i cant believe i buried the lead here yeah, the mustache is also my hair but its not from my head. [ laughter ] seth leave it. So im like, i want to i knew i wanted to propose. But i also had to get this friggin macgruber script in so i finally, on the 24th, at 3 30 in the afternoon, sent in this macgruber script i had been working on, grabbed my sister we ran down, trying to find some kind of shop i knew that i wanted to get a ring, the ultimate ring with her. But i wanted to get you know, i for sure wanted to give her, like, a temp ring. [ dog barks seth yeah. So looking, looking, looking. But its stores are closing its the day before christmas. Seth yeah, thats i mean, you should have seen that coming i should have yeah, you know, im a planner. Im a planner. [ laughter ] so anyway, i finally i just almost i just give up and im walking by this store that basically just sells postcards. And i saw that they had maybe three rings somewhere. And these slim pickens, slim pickens. [ laughter ] somehow it was meant to be and i got her the ring that i used to propose. And it is the most beautiful looking ring you can seth yeah, its stunning and im assuming if you got it at a postcard store, it cost you a pretty penny oh, the most beautiful ring that 55 can buy [ laughter ] seth you made your fiance a beautiful gift as well of music. You are a very musical person. And i guess i did not know a song you probably both love is shes like the wind by Patrick Swayze yes yes. And i have found a woman who can handle that. Seth right and so she i got a bunch of her friends and family to send in a bunch of birthday greetings. Were almost done writing the series it would be an eightepisode series, yeah seth so will, this was a film that is a fantastic film, macgruber, that did not, i think we can say, make a ton of money at the box office. And yet, in the decade since, im assuming you, like me, have heard from so many people how much they love that film it was written off for dead when it defecated the bed at the box office [ laughter ] but then i think people have given it a Second Chance i hope, you know, we were so proud of that movie that it was tough to take when it first did so poorly. But then we thought, you know what screw everybody, you know . Weve loved this thing and, you know, we spent a lot of time on all these dick jokes. Seth yeah. I think theyre some of the smartest dick jokes youll ever see on film. And i just [ indiscernible oh, thank you. Its a film that im always with no exception, when people tell me they havent seen it, i you know, ill say, i promise whatever your expectations are for it, it is so much better than that. The movie is not for everybody. Like 1 out of every 500,000 people maybe like it [ laughter ] but like it to a nice degree so with the series, i feel like people who like the movie like, if you loved the movie, one out of every five of those people will love the series. [ laughter ] and its a bipartisan caucus, i want to add. Seth i would imagine right. There is a lot of times it feels like were being partisan in our criticism. I would imagine that its very bipartisan, the flip phone caucus [ laughter ] do you some people of course are standing up for the tradition of congress and saying the founders would be very antizoom. Do you believe our Founding Fathers would like zoom or dislike it so, i think that given the situation that were in with regard to health, plus the fact that the technology exists, i think that having a zoom meeting would satisfy the Founding Fathers idea of assembling congress and i think what would really i think when youre faced with the alternative, i think what would really alarm the Founding Fathers is allowing congress to become a sort of fourmember body in which you have Kevin Mccarthy and nancy pelosi on the house side. And leader mcconnell and leader schumer on the senate side and you have only four people, in essence, being the congress and meeting and making decisions, because that is what silencing the diversity of the voices that we have in the house so zoom is a way to allow more representatives to have a voice and therefore more americans to have a voice its actually the most democratic thing we can do in light of the need to protect Public Health. Seth and how good do you think your colleagues would be at muting or unmuting themselves on zoom . I mean, i wouldnt want to take the past to be the best that we could do theres a lot of mute and unmute discussion i would estimate right around 5 to 10 of everything we do is related to unmuting and what button should be pressed but, look, people can change i spent my career teaching people people can learn zoom. People can learn how to use technology and there are legit concerns that we have to think about as we make this transition. One of them thats most important to me is how were going to let the American Public participate or view what were doing. Were having briefings on my oversight committee, on my Financial Services committee, progressive caucus all of these different things, were doing the work but were not allowing the American People to see what were doing and to learn what were learning and thats the most important thing that we should be thinking about is how do we give the American People transparency into the decisions that congress is making right now . Seth well, you know, one of the reasons im familiar with who you are is seeing televised hearings and again, we spoke to the kind of questioner you are. You had a moment with the head of the cdc, dr. Robert redfield, where you got him to commit to free coronavirus testing on the spot obviously in this current environment, we are losing moments like that, where those in charge are held to any public accountability how would you approach doing that now or is this just going to be sort of a dark period where, you know, people are making a lot of decisions about things and we dont get to hear how they came to those decisions you can absolutely hold someone accountable through a telephone call or even better, through video. And anybody who does this, ought to just think about the amount of guilt that their mother is able to inflict on them via a zoom call or a facetime call you havent called. Youre not eating your vegetables you look tired have you gained weight . I mean, all the things that mothers sort of are able to hold us accountable for via distance, we can absolutely do that remotely but i do want to say that sending letters, which is what weve been doing a lot of, is no substitute for having the cameras on and having that engagement where youre looking the witness in the eye and youre holding them accountable. I sent dr. Redfield a letter asking him to provide for free testing using the law a week before the hearing and what i got back was a gigantic nothing burger, nothing. It wasnt until having him sworn in as a witness and i was able to have a back and forth dialogue with him that i was able to get him to give the correct answer, which is yes, testing should be covered regardless of someones insurance. Seth obviously, youve talked about this vote on a massive relief bill. Were reading a lot of reports that wealthy individuals are benefiting, massive corporations are benefiting do you think there has been up to this point a failure in oversight . And do you feel as though there is potentially a solution moving forward to make sure it doesnt happen again we need to get going on oversight immediately. We should have gotten going on it a month ago and so the day that we passed the c. A. R. E. S. Act and we established the congressional Oversight Commission, within 24 to 48 hours that commission should have been up and running. Oversight should be breaking news it shouldnt be the history channel. Oversight, it should be done in real time with an eye to how can we improve what happens next so its not enough to say, oops, oops, we did this wrong we should have done this. Theres actually an opportunity here to engage with the secretary of the treasury and in real time, collaborate or should i say bully him into doing the right thing with regard to these taxpayer dollars seth you made it publicly known that you wanted to be on the Oversight Commission nancy pelosi chose someone else for the role do you feel like that limits then what you can do in terms of oversight . Or is that still the responsibility of everyone in congress look, ive gotten out of bed every morning looking for someone to hold accountable. And nothing about what commission or committee in different assignments people have changes each members duty to do oversight. We are all responsible to our constituents we are all responsible to the American People to make sure that the laws we pass are actually making improvements in peoples lives so im very supportive of the commission i cant wait to see what theyre going to do. Im going to continue to collaborate with them, send in ideas and be engaged but we also have the select committee that the speaker has established coming on board. And im just eager to get these things up and running, because the opportunities to really improve the programs disappear when you wait to do the oversight until a retrospective after the fact thing the goal is to engage in real time seth i would imagine one sort of side effect of this is not being in d. C. Means not having to schmooze politically, not having to go to insider politics parties do you miss that part of it at all . Hell, no. Cheese cubes are not an adequate dinner theyre not a nutritionally balanced meal that i would serve my kids. I think being away from d. C. And here in my community is the most important place that i could be right now. And to be honest, being able to spend more time on the substance and less time on the glad handing, i dont think ive ever been as engaged of a member as i am in this period. And i get to do it wearing flipflops on the bottom, you know, beneath the jacket its business on top its party on the bottom, wearing shorts and flipflops here in california but i have more time to be reading, to be listening to my staff, to be calling constituents, to be coming up with ideas, to be responsive to the American People. Because im not spending any time on sort of ridiculous formalities or traditions or just walking back and forth between buildings, wondering when and if the magic buzzer will go off that summons me to vote so i work even harder than ever. And i think im working in a way thats more effective. Seth well, we really appreciate that and we really do thank you for making time for us today.
