Marianne favro, nbc bay area news. Governor newsom and President Trump continued to work together, publicly thanking each other for the support when it comes to the medical response, and that includes a Federal Medical Center which is ready to open here in the bay area. Its right across the street from levis stadium. You might recognize it. This is the Santa Clara Convention center. Today coordinators from federal, state, and bay area emergency organizations toured the facility. Theyre starting to convert it into a center for noncoronavirus and nontrauma patients. Using federal resources, we would be bringing in the beds, the pharmaceutical needs, oxygen, stuff like that, things that we would need to care for 250 people. It could be critical for us. Theres no timetable yet for the conversion. A lot of us are in the same situation. Were just struggling, juggling so much with our kids home from school. So the question is can you take a breather from your work so that you can get your kids sorted out and all ready at home . Does your boss have to give you that time . Yeah, at home, getting the school ready, getting the house ready, getting the groceries ready. Theres a long list of things to do. We asked our consumer investigator chris chmura about the state law here. To help you determine whether youre allowed to take time off, we turned to the California Department of industrial relations. And heres what it says. Employees at worksites with 25 or more provided up to 40 hours of leave per year for specific schoolrelated emergencies. That quote goes on to say, such as the closure of a Childs School or day care by civil authorities, and thats exactly what so many of us are facing right now. So the other question, will you be paid if you exercise that option . The answer there is a bit trickier. The state says, whether your leave is paid or unpaid depends on the employers paid leave, vacation, or other paid time off policies. The state then says, employers may require employees to use their vacation or paid time off benefits before they are allowed to take unpaid leave, but cannot mandate employees use paid sick leave. Bottom line, check with your boss and h. R. Department. You can also call your nearest labor commissioner. Here are some of the phone numbers for all around the bay area. I called these. So for tomorrow morning, i have introduced the chance of some scattered rain for the south bay, peninsula, and trivalley, and temperatures in the 40s. North bay will be the coldest at 38.
