This morning the state School Superintendent is weighing in on the possibility that states could stay closed through the summer. A lot of us waiting to here for guidance and what it could look like if the school year, at least in Person Instruction is over for the school year 5,000 people watched the webinar itself. Clearly a lot of questions from a lot of stakeholders, educators, parents and other community members. One of the Big Questions is could the school year really be over as the governor suggested on tuesday . I think he was just really addressing the reality that what we are dealing with could be longer than anticipated. The reality for our parents is this school year is not over. We are still working to educate our kids. What we know for sure is state testing will be suspended for this year. Theres no way to assemble the kids for all of the testing, and even if they could it wouldnt be fair to students who have had this massive disruption in their e e educational life. And they are looking on how they could get assignments to students. We dont know what this will mean for your older students, the kids worried about college prep, and that guidance is coming soon. Of course we are clamoring for information, but we have to bear in mind school was canceled for the next three weeks, and the governor just mentioned the school year could be over just on tuesday. Were talking a matter of days here. Certainly we want the information, and i think a lot of educators from the top to the middle to the local level is working on a solution, and were waiting to hear that. A lot of parents are waiting for that solution. Nationwide hospitals are preparing for a medical surge of sick patients with the coronavirus, and the government has a plan to use hospital ships. Two navy ships will be put into service. One headed to new york, and one docked in san diego and headed possibly to the bay area. They have 12 operating rooms, and 1,000 beds, and a medical lab and heli pad. They are trying to say in the Trauma Centers in the bay area, we will relieve some of the load, and we will treat the trauma patients, and you concentrate on the coronavirus patients. If the president and the governor decide to send the mercy ship to the bay area, it will take four or five days to get here. One big problem still facing so many cities, its just getting testing up to speed, and that includes San Francisco where Public Health leaders are scrambling to speed up testing and the results of them. The city is working with ucsf to improve a testing plan, and they are trying to streamline a system to get people tested who are showing little to no symptoms. And the crisis has many californians wondering what will happen when fire season kicks in. And now Kamala Harris wants assurance on what they are going to do. Bart ridership continues to nosedive during the pandemic with the agency now warning it will need money to keep operating. As of today bart is halting all extra commute trains and is sticking to four runs per hour on every line all day. Bart also says for the first day of the shelter in place on tuesday, ridership was down 87 compared to the average tuesday. Bart is now predicting losses of 37 million per month in fare and parking revenues and are now pushing for federal assistance. The huge drop off in commuters apparently walloping the bridge district. It has seen a 70 drop in daily traffic. Each day the toll revenues are taking a 300,000 hit. They are joining bart and asking for federal funding to sustain longterm operations. And the Golden Gate Bridge there with no traffic. I dont mean to disrespect the many cars out there, but we dont have a big jam that we often see at 5 38. We have one concern, a fire in oakland, and it could be visible smoke wise from 880. 880 is a smooth drive right now, kari. What is it going to be like today . Its going to be better today, mike. The stimulus bill is coming, and thats the trilliondollar bill they are still working on. Lets talk about the one that provides for Coronavirus Relief. Free testing. Paid sick leave to workers. Expanded Unemployment Benefits and food stamps. In a very different time we would call it a very liberal bill, and indeed there are some of voted against it but these are extraordinary times, arent they . President trump met with nurses yesterday, and he will visit fema, and defended his decision to use the word chinese virus, and even though he acknowledged some americans dont like it. It comes from china. Thats why. I want to be accurate. As for the stimulus bill, the one they are still hammering out, early details of one version really show breathtaking steps towards helping out the average american family. Take a look, including money to each person over 18, suspension of mortgage payments, car payments, Student Loans ssessions, and 5 billion to help the homeless. And yang said, i quit the race in february, and by march they are doing what i proposed. Thats not perfectly accurate. Yang was talking about a continuous universal basic income, and this is most likely a onetime payment, and at the time we were not in the crisis that we find ourselves in today. I am still on twitter, of course. You can find me there, find me scottmcgrew. And then the nba may be giving something to sports fans, and the league is looking at isolating some players with the idea of allowing them to compete in a game environment, but theres still a lot of things to do in working this out and its not cle season can salvage. What are you seeing in hospitals and clinics so far . Are they being overrun . So yes, people are getting scared and this is expanding and increasing, and every day we see new cases. People are getting in contact with the people who have covid19, and with that panic actually patients are going to the hospital, and they are coming to the clinic, and what we need right now is the testing kits. Instead of people going to the er, come to our office because if they are not sick, we dont want the er crowded right now. Yeah, what about other supplies . Masks, ventilators and even staffing . At noon we are at 56 degrees. We still have the storm system, and thats very close by, and you can see it here on the radar showing rain just to the south as well as sierra snow, and with that system still very close by, it will give us unsettled weather, mostly for the south bay today. As we check out what we are viewing, it shows a couple storm systems headed our way, so we will see some of the storms coming in by the end of the weekend as well as early next week. We are in the low 60s today in concord and oakland. Its warmer than yesterday. Santa rosa also 62 degrees. Watch out for the popup showers that will come as we go into 3 00 and 4 00 most for the trivalley parts of the south bay as well as the east bay, and then we will start to see it taper off tonight and a chance for coastal showers tomorrow, but most of the bay area will be mostly dry.
