And about 60 minutes ago, we learned contra county has two more making it 41 cases. Today santa clara and san mateo counties, you saw the numbers, saw a big boost in their ability to test for the virus. They have the most cases in the bay area. And after two days of limited g tegsi te testing to work out any issues, the company at google ramped up its testing at san mateo and santa clara fairgrounds today. Nbc bay areas robert happen nd joins us with that part of the story. Robert. Reporter it was a much different scene yesterday. A steady stream coming into the fairgrounds and no indication that stream will be slowing down any time soon. Its hard sthoe how constantly people showed up to be tested since for privacy we are not showing faces, vehicle license plates or actual testing. But workers in full protective gear were busy at the fairgrounds entrance as people who had been screened and given appointments through the verily website kept showing up. The Santa Clara County board of supervisors cindy chavez who helped conduct the testing said the process seems to be going much faster now. Essentially the patient drives up, and only lowers the window to get their mouth swabbed, then raises the window and drives off. It was a pilot, not something theyve done before. And i think they seem to have been really responsive to learning while theyre doing and really working all the kinks out of their system. Reporter a similar scene is going on in San Mateo County also at its fairgrounds. Governor gavin newsom says the bay area sites only did 30 yesterday. Wants to see that number jump to 400 at each site. Chavez said she believes the sites can keep pace, but its not a simple process. Theres a lot of components to testing including how many tests can actually be processed through the pipeline that are also impacting ability to go broader. Reporter now, that will be key because verilys project baseline website has been at times overwhelmed by the public response. County officials telling me it shut down for a little while last night. Verily declined to comment today but in a statement said it is already talking with local governments to set up more testing sites. Live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. Ceo elon musk reportedly told his employees if they feel sick they should stay home. But that he would be working. We were alerted to the story that factory workers who called us to complain that tesla was not taking the coronavirus and social distancing seriously enough. I would not be here were it for my honest choice. And i feel force today use my pto i saved up for so long. The sides have reached an agreement. Tesla can keep the factory open but has reduced the number of people who work there. Instead of 10,000 people in that factory, now about 2,500 workers can be onsite during the shelterinplace. They are packing up and shipping out. The virus has some people so worried theyre leaving town. Actually leaving america and heading to mexico. Carlos finn test says that country doesnt have the infrastructure in place to deal with the virus. Mexico has 95 official cases of coronavirus. He believes the real number is much higher, so he feels people like javier are just as likely to get infected no matter which side of the border theyre on. I think its the same. If you take the precaution, all the information about to be safe, its the same. Were going to a smaller place and were just trying to stay safe, you know. Well see what happens. Hopefully trump will let us back into the country when i come back. Reporter and one thing to think about, the u. S. Is already closing its border with canada and now some say mexico might be next. Were live in san jose. Im damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. Damian, thank you. We mentioned Governor Newsome, his Daily Briefing with no reporters inside the room. Right now hes Live Streaming as we speak on facebook. So far the major take aways this evening, helping the homeless. Nonessential businesses were closed while businesses providing food, shelter or social services are still open. We talked to one sonoma neighbor who said the order is needed, but it leads to a lot of uncertainty. So far its confusing because its unclear what you can and cant do. There are websites including ours where you can get the details of who is essential, who is not, and what to expect in these next few weeks. Sonoma county leaders say the order is expected to stay in place through april seventh, but like all bay area counties, its believed that the shelterinplace could be extended well beyond april seventh. Shoppers continue to flood grocery stores. Lines are long, shelves are bare, but it was a different scene at San Franciscos Farmers Market which is essential and can stay open. Reporter a cold drizzly San Francisco filled with bright colors of spring. At the heart of the citys Farmers Market opened its doors in u. N. Plaza despite difficult times. Its okay. Reporter darryl airing ton was among the crowds turning out to shop at the twice weekly produce market. You need to get out and get some air. Plus, i needed some food. Reporter what he found, plenty of fruits and vegetables. Celery and cilantro. Reporter what he didnt find, long lines or big crowds. I found much more out here, much more available, shorter lines. Reporter the city declared Farmers Markets one of the essential businessnesses allowed to operates through its mandatory shelterinplace. Juan Carlos Gonzalez traveled the 99 miles from salinas to sell his produce. Its essential to be outdoors because i feel safe. Reporter there are some changes. The market eliminated samples and put in hand sanitizing stations. Yet some booths were filled with shoppers who didnt seem to be concerned about social distancing guidelines. Still the market is a resource to elderly and people like airington who find it difficult to get to the grocery stores. Joe joe risoto, jr. Today stocks tumbled more than 5 . Thats a common theme now. That wipes out virtually all the gains for the dow jones since President Trumps inauguration three years ago. The dow closed down more than 1300 points to under 20,000. Also the New York Stock Exchange will temporarily close its iconic Trading Floor in Lower Manhattan and move to all electronic trading beginning monday. Now with so many questions about covid19 weve created the Coronavirus Crisis center. The cdc is posting information on its website about managing your health from home. One of the things we know already, wash your hands, cover your coughs and sneezes using your elbow or tissue and stay home from work. But a couple more to highlight tonight. Make sure you drink lots of water and not sharing personal items with dishes and towels with other people in your house. If you are sick, the cdc advises you to stay in one room to avoid contaminating other rooms. And make sure you routinely are cleaning your phones, laptops and other technology. And a new myth we want to dispel. Last week the French Health minister tweeted that taking ibuprofen could worsen an infection. Health experts including the World Health Organization say there is no credible Scientific Evidence to that claim. Now, stay up to date with the very latest on the virus with our daily newsletter. Look at the top headlines in your inbox. Go to nbc bay area. Com to sign up. Up next at 6 00, are people getting the message on social distancing . Many of us are, but a lot of us arent. So we found some interesting sights when we roamed the streets of San Francisco. Well show you. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. We do have spotty rain over the bay area. Im tracking this and what to expect tomorrow coming up in about 7 minutes. If youre 55 and up, tmobile has a plan designed just for you. And, for a limited time only, were making it an even better deal. Now you can get two lines for only 55. That includes unlimited talk, text and data. With no annual service contracts. It also includes talk, text and data when traveling in mexico and canada. So if youre 55 and up, you can now get two lines for only 55. Because at tmobile, we have a plan designed just for you. Day two of the shelterinplace for most of the bay area, actually for all of the bay area. The other actually two other counties, napa and solano will be joining later in the week. Are people following the rules, staying at a distance and staying at home . Christie smith has that story. How is the traffic . Reporter a lot of places you would find people in San Francisco are just empty today. There are people this evening here along the embark dare owe out for some exercise. We spoke with the mayor and she said that is okay to step out and get some exercise. Certainly, you dont want to do it in a group and you want to maintain that social distancing. Most people we saw around the city today seemed to be doing that, but not all. These are extraordinary measures that we do during extraordinary times. Reporter albert ing runs soma sport and physio. Theres Hand Sanitizer throughout the clinic. Masks fo clients and staggered appointments to separate people. Were training about 40 of what we normally do right now. But it should ramp up. Most of them are, you know, theyve canceled and we totally understand. Reporter the shelterinplace has made the usually busy city a much quieter place to be. This is bart midday in downtown San Francisco. Bart is basically crowded around this time for people to go home. Reporter around the embark dare owe, tourists are gone. This couple is taking breaks from their apartment to get fresh air. We timed it, 11 00, walk a mile, go back to the apartment. Reporter they live together and keep social distancing, a 6 foot space in mind. But say it isnt always easy. The problem is the runners come running right next to you and theyre huffing and puffing. Really . We want people to go outside and get exercise and get fresh air. Not necessarily the vulnerable populations, but just in general. And understand that social distancing is important. But if youre living in the same household, for example, social distancing is probably virtually impossible. Reporter some have said people arent taking the rules seriously, but the mayor said she thinks people are getting the message. But education will continue. We try to time it when we think well see more people out. Reporte the mayor said she understands that people are still learning all this and a key part of this is to keep educating people. Reporting live in San Francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. Christie, thank you. Yes, we are all learning and some real talk here. This is a stressful time for families. Just juggling work from home and kids and no school, even if your kids are in college, there are challenges. So as we stagger our staff, Jessica Aguirre is working from home. Ten years by my side here, now well do this in a double box. We can talk for hours how to deal with our kids. What are some of the hurdles youre going through, jess . Well, you know, raj, a big trip up to san diego or i should say down, 16 hours straight, seven ours there, two hours to pack her up, get her out of her Residence Hall and drive seven hours back here. 16hour round trip to get her home safely. Shes going to continue Classes Online. But one of the challenges we faced when she was here, we did today. Literally i got her up this morning, were going to go sign these papers today. I wanted her to sign this. Its an advance health care directive. Isabel is 19 years old. In the event she gets covid19 because shes an adult, that would prohibit me from being able to be part of her care, prohibit me from the doctors telling me what her condition is or because of hipaa laws. Today we went and signed this health care directive, which basically makes me an agent for her in case that shes sick. She designated me her Health Care Agent today, right. And that basically empowers me to make any medical choices for her in the event that she cant. And also it waives, you know, to be restricted or impeded by any hipaa laws. This gives me piece of mind. We had it notarized and documented so that in the event that something happens, i know that as a parent i can be there for my child, an adult child, and be able to really help her make the choices that are going to be best for her health. Thats interesting information. And speaking of Adult Children here, for High Schoolers and College Students here, were talking about final exams. Are they still going through with finals and will they still count towards their gpa, their units and these biglevel issues . So, everything is changing by the moment. Like in terms of isabel a with college, her online classes are set up. Shes going to keep the same schedule she did while she was there. They will do their finals. High school right now, we dont know if theyre going to continue to go for the rest of the year. Were still waiting in our district for them to be able to set upstarting next week and be able to start doing their Classes Online from home on a regular basis. But, you know, all those things like the finals, those are still up in the air. I will tell you olivia is a junior. Shes getting ready and we are she was supposed to take her s. A. T. Coming up and they were canceled. Every day were learning something new were facing with school kids. Thank you. The standardized tests have been postponed or canceled. The governor said it is unlikely we will return to school in academic year. Well check back in with you. Were talking about selfteaching and how well get through this. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. Theres janelle. Were not teachers, but were all going to kind of home school now. I know, were going to set up a curriculum, a daily schedule and maybe make some time for recess, jeff, hopefully. Well, you know, and the weather. It really hasnt been cooperating a whole lot with being able to get outside in some rainfree conditions. But there is going to be some sunshine eventually on the way, also a little bit in the way of warmer weather. You can see outside right now, we do have cloud cover rolling on in with another round of showers throughout the bay area. I think well keep this chance of on again, off again wet weather in the forecast through tonight with the clouds, dropping down to a colder 49 once we hit 11 00 p. M. If you have to head out to the store for whatever reason, maybe to go to the pharmacy and pickup your prescriptions, be ready for some slick spots on the roadways and those Cool Temperatures where youll need jacket. A look at doppler radar, i have showers down in the south bay right now. Its moving off to the north and east. This would put some of that activity in mill pepitas. The weather is not big. Well keep the cloud cover. But you have to be ready for these on again off again chances even here into the afternoon with that mess chance over the santa cruz mountains, south bay and right there over contra costa andal immediate al immedi counties. Low 40s, widespread at 7 00 in the morning. By the afternoon we remain in the 50s. But heres the good news. We all probably want some sunshine and a little bit of that warmer weather. I do have that coming. Once we hit saturdays forecast were going to be right around 70 degrees for much of the bay area. Well talk more about that extended forecast. And well get you ready to go for the next seven days in 25 minutes. We like that 70 degree temperature. Thanks, jeff. Up next how the shelterinplace is hurting our local bridges and transit organizations. We investigate next. My money should work as hard as i do. So i use my freedom unlimited card to buy all the latest tech stuff. Today, im earning on a charger. So, just the charger then . Ummm. Yeah sarcastically fantastic. Earn 1. 5 cash back on everything you buy with freedom unlimited. Chase. Make more of whats yours. Lets take a live look at the Golden Gate Bridge. Eerie during this wednesday evening rush hour. You can see hardly any cars there. In fact, all of our local bridges are relatively empty. This is great news if youre driving, but not so great if youre depending on those tolls. Big money is being lost. Investigative reporter jackson van der beckon has the details. Reporter here at the Golden Gate Bridge traffic is down dramatically, some 70 as the bay area hunkers down to deal with the coronavirus. Drivers who still have to take a bridge, like deborah reyes, are enjoying the ride. Its wonderful. Im saving gas. Reporter reyes uses the bay bridge to get from berkeley to her security job at a hospital in daly city. Normally it takes me, with traffic it might take anywhere from 50 to 60 minutes. It took me about 25 minutes. Reporter but the plunge in traffic is a nightmare for bay area bridge operators. The Golden Gate Bridge and ferry system is on track to lose 1. 5 million in revenue every week. And it only has a 25 million reserve as a buffer. So the Bridge Authority is slashing its bus routes and Ferry Service in half. Were in uncharted territory. We continue to monitor the situation. We do have a reserve for moments like this. Reporter overall bridge traffic is down 44 around the bay. The dunbar ton bridge is down the most. A staggering 61 from this time last year. But those bridges have a much larger reserve, 1 billion. Reyes says that while shes enjoying the easy ride, she hopes it doesnt last too long. We have to be safe. Safety first with the coronavirus, you know. Lives are important as well. Hopefully it will pass. Reporter jackson van derbeken, nbc bay area news. The move the senate just made, awaiting President Trumps signature. I cant believe it. That chad really was raised by wolves . Which one is your mother . Thats her right there. Oh, gosh. No, i cant believe how easy it was to save hundreds of dollars on my Car Insurance with geico. Its really great. Well, im just so glad to have met your beautiful family. And we better be sitting down now. Believe it geico could save you fifteen percent or more on Car Insurance. Right now at 6 30, a new kind of social distancing. Senators now enter the empty chamber to vote one at a time. The first member of congress tests positive for the virus. Representative Mario Diazbalart and hes not alone. Mcadams of utah revealed he, too, has covid19. Case wills rise, now top 200,000, the country is now closing its borders, raj and implementing lock down to slow down the virus. It continues on an hourly basis. On the front lines, protective clothing, masks and ventilators are in dangerously short supply. We have been reporting on that for several days, but now President Trump reacted by exercising a wartime power to draft u. S. Factories into producing critical equipment before its too late. We have tremendous numbers of ventilators, but theres never been an instance like this where no matter what you have its not enough. And nationwide we have heard Health Experts encouraging older folks to stay home. They are also making that plea to younger people now. Millennials are at higher risk of serious illness than previously thought, and experts worry they are still going out socially. Some of the scenes were seeing, spring break down in florida, and in mexico, still going out socially, hanging out together and possibly spreading the disease. So in different states we have different responses. Keep in mind what were going through in the bay area will likely be adopted in many other areas. Today new yorks governor announcing a 50 cap on the number of employees who can show up to work at nonessential businesses. The rest must work from home. And perhaps the strangest News Conference of the day from a city leader in baltimore today where the mayor angrily ordered people to immediately stop gun violence. So hospital beds would be freed up for coronavirus patients. And the message to drivers in South Carolina in fact, we see it sometimes here on our local free ways. Save lives now, stay home. The department of transportation has put that message in electronic lights on its highway signs. Yeah, ive seen that here in the bay area. Well, two u. S. Navy hospital ships are being pressed into service. The comfort in virginia will be deployed to new york to relieve crowding at new york hospitals. Each ship has about 1,000 rooms and 12 surgery units. The second ship, the mercy, is currently docked in san diego. We havent made the final determination as to where its going to go on the west coast. The comfort is located now in san diego and its going to be well be picking the destination fairly shortly. The president meant to say the mercy is in san diego. The plan is for the hospital ships to take patients who do not have the virus. Now, to help us understand more about these hospital ships, mark knew vo is a former fema president ial appointee who worked under president s george w. Bush and barack obama. He in the bay area has more than 40 years of Public Safety experience on the front lines of the San Francisco fire battalion chief. Mark, thank you so much for joining us again. Weve heard about these two medical ships now. Tell us more. How are they equipped, what can they handle each day . Well, if you would kind of think about a landbased regular hospital with xrays, operating rooms, pharmacies, triage areas, emergency rooms, thats what these ships have. They can treat about 1,000, they have 12 operating rooms. This one is coming up from san diego. And the idea behind it is to try and relieve some of the pressure if theres a run on the current hospitals with the coronavirus. The idea that this ship would be able to take some of the regular trauma patients and its one more move to try and figure out a way to increase capacity if we need it. So, they are equipped to take like gunshot victims and basically other trauma patients, people have a heart attack theyd go to these ship hospitals if the hospitals here on land are overrun . Thats exactly right. The last time the sister ship was deployed, the one on the east coast, was during hurricane maria. It went down to puerto rico for 51 days and they were treating about 50 patients a day. So its a great resource. In this particular case, moving it over here is one more tool. Weve heard the governor already has a couple hospitals theyre working on. Theyve secured a number of hotel rooms for folks to be able to move patients into if need be. So its another tool that theyre trying to utilize. The challenge with this, though, is that the ship is staffed by about 1200 uniformed personnel, men and women in the armed forces. But they also have 71 civilians, and those civilians are part of a reserve core. Theyre doctors and nurses that dedicate their time. The challenge becomes if we utilize that ship, will we be taking away doctors and nurses from another ems, emergency medical system . So the challenge with this as well as some of the other teams that were talking about is going to be staffing, staffing, people, people, people. Thats going to be difficult and i guess theyre going to have to do it. Do you think there is a chance the ship in san diego now, it will come to the bay area because the bay area has more cases than Southern California . I think that will be determined as we get closer. It takes the ship about 76 hours to get up and go when they say its time to move it. And it seems like by what were seeing right now, you know, they think the load is still to come. We hope that it doesnt materialize, but if it does, right now it seems to be in northern california. Nice part is that having it on the west coast, if they need to relocate it back down to Southern California, they can certainly do that. Okay. Mark neveaux, we appreciate your insight and knowledge. We hope youll join us again in the coming days. Thanks so much, mark. Janelle, doctors are swabbed and hospitals will soon be overwhelmed. To make matters worst, we heard california doesnt have enough doctors and nurses. People, people, people here. We knew this well before the coronavirus. Senior Investigative Reporter b bigad shaban has how that is potentially limiting our ability to see a doctor. We are seeking a help from a pediatrician. Reporter these operators are dispatching doctors and nurses across the country. At a rate this medical Staffing Agency has never experienced before. Its an outpatient environment. Is it something youd be interested in . Were seeing a 20 to 30 increase in demand. Reporter hes the chief marketing officer for md staffers, a recruiting agency to help fill positions. The number of calls coming in is growing. I would expect that at any given hospital, the demand will at least double. Reporter is that sustainable . Its not. Its not sustainable because theres only so many doctors. All this coronavirus pandemic is doing is exposing the cracks in our Health Care System already. And now were seeing what happens when we take a few thousand Health Care Workers and tell them, you need to stay home for 14 days. Reporter its estimated california will need to hire 4,000 more doctors and 600,000 more home care workers. Over the next ten years to treat our aging population. And that was the prognosis even before the coronavirus started spreading, filling up patient waiting rooms and infecting medical staff on the front lines, including in San Francisco. I dont have the numbers to share with you in terms of the number of Health Care Workers who are quarantined, but we do know they are at high risk for exposure. Reporter San Francisco Public Health director dr. Grant kouf colfax may never know that figure. We followed up with the Health Department and were told the city isnt tracking the number of staff under medical quarantine. Do you think its possible San Francisco may not have enough Health Care Workers in the future . We are more prepared than niezgoda other jurisdiction that i am aware of. We have a robust Health Care System and everybody is stepping up. Reporter ucsf, saint marys and Kaiser Permanente placed some staff on leave as a precaution against the coronavirus. None would say how many, but we do know at u. C. Davis Medical Center in sacramento, at least 89 Health Care Workers were sent home for selfquarantine after a woman with the virus was admitted to the hospital. Those employees have since been cleared to return to work after testing negative for the coronavirus. But at ucsf where those two doctors tested positive, one of the physicians revealed his diagnosis online. We have had a number of Health Care Workers infected. I dont have the exact numbers. Reporter Health Officer dr. Sarah cody said Staffing Levels are now a concern in santa clara, californias hardesthit county. Brian larkin said the requests for medical staff keep coming in. He got one text as we were talking. The most notable being a request for ten doctors in 48 hours. Thats how fast they need them . Exactly. Thats probably because they are quarantining some docs. Reporter this weekend San Francisco will hold a job fair for nurses. It comes after the city waves rules to speed up the hiring process which they say has typically taken up to six months. The Mayors Office now tells us San Francisco will be able to hire nurses, quote, on the spot. With the investigative unit, im bigad shaban. Thanks, bigad. San francisco stays cool. 57 in the mission and 55 in the marina. And for the north bay i have you at 63 in napa, 59 mill valley and 62 santa rosa. Tomorrow offers only a spotty chance of a shower. As ive been talking about, we do have some Better Weather to get outside and get some fresh air. I think once we hit friday and saturday, we are dry. Well be warming up to 64 in San Francisco by saturdays forecast. And then we do see some shower chances returning on sunday. Its not a whole lot. Only 50 possibility. I think the better bet of some measurable widespread rain will come on next monday and tuesday. A quarter to a half inch the way we see it right now. And we could hold on to a lingering chance for next wednesday. Inland valleys best day coming your way, anyone away from the coast line will be on saturday, up to 70 with some sun and some clouds. And then we will see some cooler temperatures by next week with some increased rainfall chances. So right now, i dont know about you guys. I am really looking forward to friday and saturday.
