Trade. At what point do you pull the plug and say you know what . Its not worth it anymore. Soledad im soledad obrien. Welcome to matter of fact. On tuesday voters head to the polls for primaries or caucuses in 6 more states, idaho, michigan, mississippi, missouri, north dakota and washington. Michigan has an outsize role in president ial politics, its a battleground state, that was once part of the reliable blue wall for democrats. But the state got away from them 2016. President trump won michigan by the slimmest of margins, less than 1 per cent. Or about 10 thousand votes. The state hadnt voted for a we like to call were paying attention even if youre too busy. The Affordable Care act is on republican since 1988. But president trumps message the ballot in 2020, sort of. The Supreme Court announced it resonated there. Will decide the fate of the aca, that was before his trade war with china. Michigans economy relies on also known as obamacare. Manufacturing and agriculture as well. Fall. During a listening tour to michigan last summer, our correspondent Jessica Gomez showed us how the trade war hurt major lightning rod issue during more than farmers. The election. So how did obamacare end up back we have approximately 33 at the Supreme Court . A lower court ruled the laws individual mandate was unconstitutional. Hundred acres under our control. Normally this time of year we the mandate requires you to Carry Health Insurance or pay a fine. Would be seeing lush green but when republicans passed crops, right now we are looking at brown dirt everywhere. Jessica that brown dirt, their tax bill in 2017 it repealed the financial spanning hundreds of acres penalty but not the mandate across the smuts family farm, itself. So a group of republican southwest of lansing, hard to attorneys general led by texas and backed by the Trump Administration used this legal believe nowwet weather was to blame for one of the worst limbo to challenge obamacare altogether. Planting season theyve ever seen. Duane smuts it didnt rain a lot but it rained enough that their argument is if the penalty were we unable to get back into is no longer required, then the mandate should be our fields. Unconstitutional. And if the mandate is its usually 6 foot or better, unconstitutional then the entire aca should be unconstitutional. A recent Kaiser Family Foundation Poll found popularity for the aca is the highest its taller. Ever been since it became the jessica and in westphalia, the corn that did get planted on the law a decade ago. 55 percent of americans now schafer farm was weeks and weeks late, brown patches where it was just too wet. What yield theyll get at support it. Harvest, still unclear. Leroy schafer it was tough, you want to go to work, you want to do your job, you want to plant your crops, but its just too when we return, a job with perks outta this world. Wet out there to do it. The michigan farm bureau, visits tonight we eat like kings farmers like the schafers, and chuckling youre a genius, gordon sees the stress behind the brake hit the brake smiles, but says this crisis is uh, which ones the brake . Now extending far beyond the crash, bottles smashing stop stop dairy barns. Stooop brakes squealing ernie birchmier our rural whats happening . What . Theres a half of cheesesteak back there. Communities are made up of farmers and businesses that with geico, the savings keep on going. Support those farmers and just like this sequel. 15 minutes could save you 15 or more farmers who support these businesses. Jessica in many rural towns on car insurance. Raccoon i got the cheesesteak throughout michigan, the reverberations of struggling farms, already being felt. Oh. Oh, darn wha let me help. Bags and bags of seed, returned lift and push and push to bob mansfields company, there. Its up there. Hey joshie. Wrinkles send the wrong message. Jessica at bader and sons, a john deere dealer in portland, the Service Department is busy, but in sales, the sounds of silence. Sales manager mitchell thelen, is a father of 6. You dont get the phone calls, you dont get the walkin business. Jessica since farmers arent coming to him, thelen is going to them. Mitchell thelen you get to know that farmer a little bit more now that you are face to face with them. A lot of guys are nervous, very nervous, they dont know what next year is gonna bring. Jessica but its a tough sell these days. Why not today . cause corn arent worth 5 and soybeans arent worth 10. Jessica while many farmers here support trade reform we could really use a trade deal. Jessica for those like duane smuts, their patience, like their savings, is wearing thin. How many more years of this could you withstand . Duane not very many, were burning through capital at a rapid rate here and we dont ever wanted to grow up and be an need any more of these anytime soon. Astronaut, nows your chance. We will talk about both today. A Young Musician we have been wanting to get on our show. Award winning musician will be here to talk about her life as a soledad the democratic primary has moved much closer to a two person race. Between a moderate, joe biden. And progressive Bernie Sanders. There have always been wings in political parties, but its clear this cycle, democrats are once again asking themselves what type of party they want to be. Back in 2008 one word defined then candidate Barack Obamas campaign. Change. Progressives say thats exactly what they want right now. Change. So why isnt change resonating as much today . Roshni neddungadi is a partner at hit strategies, polling and Research Firm focused on democratic strategies. Thank you for joining us. So is it as simple as change vs. Centrists . Because on social media, sometimes it feels that way. These people want change and these people dont want change. Theyre centrists. I dont think its that simple this year, primarily because of donald trump. Democrats going to vote this year. You can see in the exit polls coming out of the early states and from last night from super tuesday that a majority of democratic voters in some of these key swing states want a candidate who can beat donald trump. So its not necessarily change versus status quo this year. There is an element of the need to beat donald trump that people are making their choices based on as well. Soledad so what is the democratic strategy here . Listen, our plan is to figure out how to appeal to independents and to appeal to moderates on the republican side, who might want to abandon trump, grab those folks and bring them into the election. Or is the strategy to say, bernie, Elizabeth Warren supporters and bring them in to the tent . I dont think that it needs to be an either or. I think that we saw in twenty eighteen that its really important to bring in more moderate, College Educated white suburban voters. But i think its also very important as we saw in 2016 to maintain our base, maintain and expand our base of young voters, of people of color, to ensure that we have the margins in key swing states like wisconsin, florida, pennsylvania, that we need to win the electoral college. If you look at Bernie Sanders in oklahoma, he won the state of oklahoma in 2016, super tuesday, 2016 this time around, and super tuesday, he lost the state of oklahoma. Whats happened to his support . Why is he losing ground or underperforming in 2020 . I was looking at this, and i think that a lot of it, again, can be attributed to the fact that peoples priorities in oklahoma, especially when youre looking at the exit polls, were to beat donald trump. They overwhelmingly chose joe biden as their candidate. I also think that theres an element of sexism that plays into it. Hillary clinton did very badly there. And joe biden, who is running on a very similar platform, is doing much better than. Soledad what sexism what . Im shocked. Young people and turnout certainly on social media. Right. Young people overindex. You would think everybody under the age of 35 is marching to the polls, every single caucus and primary. What auado they vote . Thats not been the case in the last few early states. Weve seen over the past couple of years just a disillusionment in the political system among young voters. And the idea that voting, especially voting for a president , doesnt create the change they want to see in their communities and in their neighborhoods. So i think that thats something that the Democratic Party is really going to have to focus on this year, is connecting young voters to Democratic Candidates and the issues that they want to see and proving that they can make a change. Soledad cbs did a poll that found that about democrats and independents, 31 percent described themselves as very liberal, roughly the same number say somewhat liberal, roughly the same number, say buckeridge and conservative. How do you unite a party where thats kind of all over the map. Whoever comes out of this primary process is going to have to make some ideological compromises. If its joe biden compromising on health care and Climate Change and really pushing those issues to the forefront. If its Bernie Sanders maybe taking a step back on some of the radical things that he wants to do that push back on conservatives. Soledad thank you so much. Nice to chat with. When we come back. A job with perks out of this world. And is your Health Care Coverage on but first, did california set itself up for a housing crisis . How do you live now . How do i live . Oh, just a sleeping place. I store some food here, i can make coffee here, no big deal. Its kinda like camping. Soledad super tuesday marked the first time the countrys most populous state participated in the early primaries. Besides the environment, and health care, housing was at the top of minds of voters in the golden state. To say california has a housing problem is an understatement. Crisis is the word many use to describe the situation. One reason affordability. The median price for a home there is more than half a million dollars. And rental rates for one and two bedroom apartments in san francisco, oakland, and san jose are among the highest in the nation. Averaging between 2600 to 4500 dollars per month. For a twobedroom. The states also dealing with a homeless crisis. And during our listening tour it by in the bay area, on a six figure salary. In californias latest gold rush someones struck it rich. New construction everywhere new multimillionaires are snapping up every house that hits the market, and making it just about impossible for oldtimers like tbird and her human steve to afford a home. How do you live now . How do i live . Oh, just a sleeping place. I store some food here, i can make coffee here, no big deal. Its kinda like camping. Steve didnt want his face shown, but hes lived in his 85 dodge van here for nearly three years. He thinks the neighbors are pretty decent except the one just across the street. Its crazy theres that much wealth and yet when theres that much money in one spot, the people who dont have any money are really gonna get it. Because all the prices go up and we cant afford that. This isnt just a crisis of the down on their luck unemployed. Steve, for one, writes technical manuals for a living. And in the makeshift campsites that have cropped up all over Silicon Valley are more working people. Families. Even college students. This is at the crisis point. Its not even a crisis, now its a catastrophe. Its a human catastrophe that were seeing on our streets. Michael lane is an Affordable Housing advocate in Silicon Valley. Its really the story of the last decade here. After we had the Great Recession and the mortgage crisis, about 2012, 2013, we had an amazing economic rebound, but it was very unequal and we didnt catch up with housing. We were developing eight jobs for everyone knew housing. The result, almost unimaginable spikes in homelessness. A new survey found its up a whopping 42 percent in san jose the unofficial capital of the tech sector and throughout the bay area even six figure earners find themselves priced out. What can you get . Well, not much. Forced out of their last rental, raul and victoria peralez jumped at this plac, an 11hundred square foot twobedroom for only three thousand a month. With sevenmonthold jorge, and two dogs at home, this was their only option. An eyeopener even to this city councilman. He and his wife even took in a roommate just to make the rent at their last place. Three incomes to rent a Single Family home. And that may be one of the better examples. We had multiple families youre talking 1215 People Living in a Single Family home. You roll with the punches. But inevitably you go, wait a second, is this the way that it should be, right . Its affecting more and more people at higher and higher income levels. Makers and Decision Makers paying attention. But frankly, good intentions are no longer enough. Analysts say the state needs more than three million new units just to catch up on its housing deficit. And californias restrictive zoning, local covenants and even constitutional requirements can stifle new construction one example, despite the clearly desperate need san jose just opened its first new Supportive Housing exclusively for the homeless. And theres growing concern that more priced out californians may be forced to flee the golden state. Ive grown up here, went to san jose state, a teacher here, a Police Officer here now a city council member. Im glowing of san jose. And i certainly expected to stay here my entire life, but, san if that is my future continue t. Its a choice facing an entire generation of californians, considering their futures. For matter of fact, im joie chen, in san jose. Soledad even though california has seen skyrocketing housing costs, voters rejected a Ballot Initiative called proposition 10 which would have enacted rental control laws. Now a new rent control initiative is on the 2020 balot. Coming up next, how a legal loophole could lead to you losing health care. Plus do you have what it takes to work in space . Nasas hiring. Its looking for two new astronauts. Soledad now to a weekly feature
