The golden gate bridge, areas of patchy fog performing to the north bay and santa rosa, down to about a quarter of a mile in terms of visibility and right now, the current temperatures in the 40s. And 47 degrees in san jose, and 46 in palo alto, and 50 degrees in San Francisco, and we do have the low 40s up near santa rosa, so lets talk about that rain, because it is something weve been monitoring, and the niners are playing. Lastminute shopping, and you should have been doing it already. And the satellite and radar, you can see the system off to the Pacific Northwest and it is starting to make its move, but a lot of the rain is going to make its way in far off to ukiah, first, initially and then we will take you through the timing of all of this, and of course when the storm ranger is scanning, as far as your microclimate high for today, coast, bay, and inland, a cloudy day ahead when you dont have to worry about the rain for the majority of your day. It is not going to move in, until were sleeping. That is good to hear. Temperatures in the 50s and 60s. Ahead of the storm that is moving in, we will begin to see the southerly winds kick up. Into tonight. And which is why there is a wind advisory for the east bay hills. And diablo range. And also through the county here, mainly for tonight though, as that cold front approaches. Because of the wind, we want to tie down or anchor down santa in the yard. Absolutely. Frosty, too. Still ahead on today in the bay, when this south bay teen was born, she weighed less than two pounds and may not have survived but a simple gift from a stranger gave her parents hope. See how she is paying that gift forward today. Chances are you have heard of paying it forward and doing a good deed in hopes you will inspire someone else to do the same. Or even better down the road. In the case of our next story, it was 17 years down the road. Today in the bays garvin thomas, shares a story about giving hope, when it is needed most, in this mornings bay area proud. In the household here in saratoga, they have a special day they celebrate. January 9th. Not the birthday of twins erica and yurith but the day they came home from the hospital. The family looks at pictures and tells stories, one story in particular, that had clearly left an impression. In the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Lucille Patrick Childrens Hospital stanford, there are likely thousands of medicines they can give these smallest of patients. For the babys parents though, there is only one that gets them through the day. Hope. Just having hope is just a beautiful thing. 17 years ago, she needed all the help she could get. Her twin children had come into the world at a perilously young age. So they were 27 weeks. They were one pound 12 ounces and one pound 14 ounces. There were many times she wondered if her children would survive and if so, what kind of life they would lead. She desperately needed hope. So from one preemie to another. It arrived one day in the shape of a blanket. And a three by five card. From a girl, who talked about saying she was 15, and she was born with, you know all of the issues that she had, and from then, she is on the honor roll, and in sports, and just sounds like a happy girl. It meant everything. It was hope. It was the hope that, you know, that the kids will have a good existence. It was a story erica, now a high school junior, heard many, many times growing up. So many, in fact, that when she turned 15, erica knew just what to do. When i turned 15, oh, my gosh, im the same age as this girl, chi do the same thing. It gave my mom and dad a lot of hope and i wanted to do the same thing for future babies in the hospital today. Dedicated to my twin brother eric who has been with me every step of the way. Because of a card because i was early, i had a few problems here and there. Erica wrote an entire book. One she has been allowed to give to nicu families at lucille packard, just like that blanket and card years ago. I went through many ups and downs, you see. But that didnt make me different from other babies. Delivering doses of the medicine that is hope. Just when it is needed the most. Garvin thomas, nbc bay area news. Thanks for that, garvin. Coming up, on today in the bay Palo Alto Police under the microscope, after another Man Says Police used excessive force. We investigate. Also, President Trump snaps back at the evangelical magazine that says he should be removed from office. Good saturday morning. Coming up on 7 30, and theres San Francisco, peeking up out of the clouds, and san bruno mountains. Im told this is the shortest day of the year. Right . Good morning. Im chris chmura sitting in for kira clapper. She has the day off. And vianey is here. The final couple hours of autumn. It is and were beginning to welcome winter solstice. Most people think during winter, the earth is further from the sun, but it is based on the solstice, were closer to the sun, the first day of winter is today, and that is going to happen tonight at 8 00, so the shortest day of the year, because of the length, we have nine hours and 35 minutes for the day, and overall, it is the center of the sun directly above the tropic of capricorn. So a lot of people are like what is the difference between meteorological and astronomical winter. And meteorological is based on the annual temperature cycle and astronomical is based on the year, and were closer to the sun during the winter and i think a lot of people like to associate the temperatures to solstice, and they think during the summer, were closer to the sun, and during the winter, were furthest and that is actually backwards. Science class here at 7 30 in the morning. And we will have a look at the rain in 15 minutes. Vianey, thank you very much. This morning, we have new details about a tragedy at a north bay elementary school. A fence fell over and crushed a young student. The president tweeted this is an assault on america and an assault on the republican party. The white house lawyer, and a top aide visited the capitol to meet with the Senate Republican leader and says it is strange the House Speaker hasnt sent over the articles of impeachment and they say theyre preparing for trial. As i think the president has made very clear, he wants the opportunity to make his case, to the senate, as well as to the american people. Democrats want current and former white house officials, called as witnesses. We want it to be fair. So if new witnesses make it ever more fair, including for the president , then we should welcome them. Joining the debate, an evangelical magazine, founded generations ago by the reverend billy graham, the editor of christianity today wrote the president should be removed from office. It is like were blinking or winking or looking the other way when our president is doing things that are not merely unconstitutional but blatantly immoral. The president responded to the magazine, in a tweet, writing christianity today is a far left magazine or very progressive as some would call it which has been poorly and hasnt been involved with the billy graham family for many years. The editor responded to christianity today that it is not a liberal publication. We likely know the date of the next state of the union address, february 4th, potentially in the middle of a Senate Impeachment trial and though that trial will have to wait until the new year, the debate rages on through the holidays. Scott mcfarland, nbc news, washington. In the race for president , the democrats are changing things up a little bit and setting a higher bar to qualify for the next debate. The Democratic National committee now says to qualify, candidates must get 5 in four national polls, or statewide polls in early voting states. The alternative plan here, they must have 7 in two early state polls. There will also be donation and fundraising minimums. The seventh debate is scheduled for next month. Back here in the bay area, bart is increasing security for the holidays. Oakland police and bart officers are passing out information about protecting yourself from crime. With a fractured bone in his face. Senior Investigative Reporter first began raising questions earlier this year, after obtains video of an officer slamming another residents head into a windshield. There are also questions about whether palo altos Police Department is complying with the new state law, requiring Police Body Camera footage to be made public when a Police Officer shoots or seriously juries somebody. For months we have been requesting video from this most recent incident. But so far, palo alto pd wont release it. And wont tell us why. Instead, we obtained this surveillance video, from the camera outside the doughnut shop in palo alto, where last july, an officer approached julio aravalo, according to the police report, the officer suspected he was involved in a drug deal. Even though the video appears to show no such thing. When he tries to walk away, the officer pushes him against the fence, and then slams him to the ground. Briefly knocking him unconscious. These are pictures showing what aravalo woke up, looked like when he woke up chained to a hospital bed. I should have stayed home but i wanted to give my son a doughnut and i never came back. Police did not find any drugs on him, and no charges were ever filed. This is at least the third use of force incident involving this same officer that has led to a claim against the city of palo alto. And yes, the sierra is expecting more snow tonight, as a change approaches. The current temperatures as you head out the door this morning, 47 degrees in san jose, and 46 in palo alto, take a look at San Francisco, 50 degrees. So currently, where are we compared to the rest of the nation . If youre planning on traveling, here is what youre expecting to be in salt lake city, look at that, 28 degrees, and make sure to bundle up, and we have a couple of 20s in minneapolis, and then if youre going to new york city, 27 degrees. So it is going to be pretty cold overall. First thing for christmas, we are tracking the possibility of several delays on sunday, after christmas, and look at the airlines before you travel. So definitely be sure to wear some layers. By the Fourth Quarter, it is going to get cold. And that rain is going to stay off to the north. Dont forget, we have a very special newscast, we will be out on the field, raj and janelle, and be sure to tune in for that, but at least the rain is staying away. When is it arriving . I have the models rain making the arrival at 6 00, and until 1 00, 2 00, 3 00, ukiah, santa rosa and napa seeing rain. And pushing through 6 00 a. M. And 6 00, 7 00, 9 00 a. M. , the primary times of rain. Light to moderate. But not necessarily heavy rainfall. So the mountain tops could see anywhere from one and a half to two inches. And the rest of the area is going to get about a quarter of an inch to maybe just over an inch in some of the Higher Elevation areas. So the Sierra Snowpack right now, where are we in terms of that . Doing pretty good. 92 of average for the north and 108 of average for central and 109 of state average overall. We are expecting more snow this weekend. A couple more inches. Which means a wind advisory is also in place. And the winter officially begins tonight at 8 19 p. M. And right now, we are tracking snow moving in, but on monday, we will take a break, and then we get another storm that moves in, unfortunately, just in time for christmas. Chris, back to you. Whether youre at home, or work, it could be sweet relief for the air conditioning, in the winter, the heating keeps you warm. Hvac is something we cant do without. And hvac could be putting Childrens Health at risk. Trapping high levels of Carbon Dioxide or co2 in classrooms. It has been an issue for more than a decade, going back as far as 2004, showing how poor entvation impacts student attendance and health, citing aging equipment in portable classrooms as two causes. But the new study didnt look at all histovac systems, not old o only new ones and it turns out many are not operating as they should and some may be installed or programmed inappropriately. We were shocked. One of the lead researchers for the study which looked at co2 levels in 104 classrooms across california. 85 of classrooms she says have ranked well above the 1,000 parts per million advised by title 24. Californias building cold. A and three of the 11 were installed here in the bay area. The Research Shows that there is a Strong Association between inadequate ventilation and students performance. Respiratory health and absences. Many of the schools were shocked by the studies and said the core of the issue is a lack of awareness but students in and staff in one School District have noticed difference. We noticed when the teacher closes the door and the room gets hot and stuffy and the students are in general wanting to put their heads down and not as attentive in the classroom. A senior in san jose, working with others for the virtual Design Construction program to research and understand the impact of co2 on bay area students across the bay area. When the door is open, i feel people are more active and they talk more and participate more. And theyre just more awake in general. Thankfully, for emily and her classmates, the director of maintenance for the School District has been working to address the issue. We have updates on the current controls that are outdated, we want to operate a healthier environment for students to help improve theyre chievement. And provide a healthier vehement for them to, a healthier environment for them to work in. The largest high School District in northern california, on the east side, for the last year, the staff have been installing programmable thermostats, that allow them to remotely monitor co2 levels, and automatically adjust ventilation levels if they get too hot. Were looking at 90 days, to have monitoring in all of the classes. So he says the initial monitoring showed many classrooms around the 12 to 1300 range for co2. In rare cases, levels maxed out at 2,000. But the technology has allowed them to address each classroom on a case by case basis. As they install the thermostats. It is almost like in a way, you get enough co2 in the room, that youre almost intoxicated in a certain way. You cant think as clearly. You cant think logically. You cant control your temper and your frustrations, as much as you normally would be able to. Ryan lundo, has been teaching in the district for the last eight years. And i dont really care how great the teacher is, or how excited the student is, if that facility and that air quality is not where it should be, the learning isnt going to happen. Currently, there are no state or federal laws regulating co2 levels in classrooms. But california does have Building Energy efficiency standards that require installation of new hvac systems be tested by certified technicians. Jessica, thank you very much. A decadesold Sandwich Shop will close its doors on the peninsula. Sams italian sandwich company, or sam seas sandwiches is going out of business, on burlingame avenue, and the owners say the city didnt renew the lease so they knew they would have to close. Stanford engineers are taking an allelectric Autonomous Car to the next level. Meet marty, that is a driverless delorean. Stanford engineers programmed the car to drift, skidding through a turn, and dont try that, let the engineers do that, and the Stanford Team named the car marty after the character in back to the future, marty mcfly, and the goal besides a heck of a show is to study how Autonomous Cars perform in extreme situations. We have a little more ahead today on today in the bay, coming up, our clear the shelters segment, featuring our pets in need and we will introduce to you leo, next. Stay with us. Welcome back. It is time for our clear the shelters segment. With our friends from pets in need. We have al and crystal here. And oh, my gosh, look at this. Leo. Leo. Thanks for joining us this morning. Tell aus little bit about leo. He is a little bit different from our normal pets here, right. He is. What we do is we go out to public shelters, and we pull kittens for the foster program, and when we do so, we send them to foster homes, and this guy has been in foster, and thats why he is so calm and so friendly. And hes just about ready for adoption. Wow. So who is going to be the lucky forever home . Well see. Im trying to convince the boyfriend, but maybe not. It might be you. It might be me. Tell us about fostering and were it is so important, and how people can get involved. Fostering is absolutely crucial to shelter operation. As nice as our shelters, are and as, you know, quality of the care that we provide for the animals, there is nothing like being in a loving family, and having an opportunity to socialize with human beings, and this is the end result when we have animals that are able to go right into foster programs. So having a strong volunteer Foster Network is absolutely essential. If you had to ask leo whether he prepared to be in the shelter or a home no question. No contest, right . Right. How do people get involved and how what kind of commitment do they have to make . They can make a commitment of a weekend every once in a while, particularly types of animals, we have fosters who only want to foster kittens or only, they are a dog family and only want to do dogs for a short period of time. Whatever they, you know, they are able to do, or willing to accommodate. Excellent. Are you guys having a special program right now home for the holidays.
