So well continue to monitor that as well as the humidity an that will create the critical fire conditions. Mike, youre tracking the roads. And we start with a crash in san jose. There may be a couple lanes blocked. Just a typical crash. No major injuries. So look at the south bay, were zooming out and showing you the bigger view and there are no major issues as far as Speed Sensors go. And even in the altamont pass, traffic is green right now because remember, were on a half hour earlier. My concern here is in the north bay with a traffic issue because we have reports of a signal that is out, but also because of just after 1 00 this morning, there were power lines that reportedly came down in the area. Caltrans is on scene but i dont know about other crews. This is the jamison canyon area. And with the high wind, apparently power lines came down. So ill link them as a possibility. But just a general concern. And this is the breaking news that were covering for you early. The planned Power Outages that weve been talking about for days are already in effect right now in some locations. Overnight pg and e started cutting off power to more than 500 homes and businesses in the north baidu to tdue to the highe danger. The purple are the out thinks. Pg e calls it phase one. A second phase will start at noon and last through tonight, it will impact the counties there on the map and 230,000 homes and businesses will be impact impacted. And many schools and universities have canceled classes. You can watch the ticker at the bottom of the screen with schools listed. In the south bay, bracing for those outages as laura mentioned, we expect the mayor to hold a News Conference at 7 00 a. M. And we will be streaming that live. And of course were following this story from multiple angles for you. Bob riddell is looking at the commute concerns from the b. A. R. T. Station and kris sanchez is getting new details on the closures. But lets start with pete up in napa where many of neighbors already lost power. Reporter yeah, shut downs began roughly around midnight. And we just drove into napa, were along highway 29. As you see behind me, the traffic lights are out, so this could be a problem as the morning goes on. We see Law Enforcement there handling the situation trying its best to direct it, but it will be a problem with troes traffic lights out. I want to show you new individuvideo just in. You can see power out at intersections and also at a target over there near the sausalito area. As you mentioned, pg e deciding to shut off power due to the elevated fire danger across the bay area. The decision affecting hundreds of thousand of customers who are trying their best to prepare for the situation, whether it is getting flashlight, all they need to deal with the power shutoffs. The times will vary by county. In some cases it could take several days until the power is restored. So a good idea to sign up for any text alerts, for updated information as the whole situation unfooleds. And of course as a result, there will be a number of School Districts closing down for a couple days in in thnapa and so. And really the overall impact will probably continue as the day goes on. As we take you back out here live to highway 29, just off of road here, the traffic lights are out and that could be a problem here as the morning goes on. At 4 30, well hear from a resident who doesnt know if her power is out. Well hear from her in the next half hour. And a he reminder if you go to a traffic light and it is out, treat it as a four way stop and expect the other people not to stop, they should, but they may not. So a lot of traffic concerns this morning. At one point there was talk of the tunnel shutting down but now that is not the case. And bob is also live for us this morning at b. A. R. T. Reporter and they have been working to prepare for these types of emergency outages. So lets say if this section of the area were to be shut down without power, they are able to pull power from other sections of their system to keep the trains running. Now, incidentally you also see this backup generator here. This is not to keep the trains running, this is in case orinda b. A. R. T. Loses house power and this would power things like the ticket vending machine, elevators and escalators. There are possibly six b. A. R. T. Stations that could lose house power today and that is why b. A. R. T. Has put generators at those locations. So the escalators might be out, but the elevators and other things i mentioned should still be operational. Now, regarding the caldecot tunnel, it could still shut down today at noon. But caltrans is telling us that it will remain open. Last night as you see in this video, workers brought in Power Generators and that will keep the vital exhaust fans running. This is a big deal for computers who use that tunnel without the connection between 680 and oakland, traffic would be a nightmare. And we also spoke with the sheriff and he is concerned about an increased level of crime in this area because some security alarms might not be working during the power outage in the aeast bay. And that is why the office of Emergency Services has their war room up and ready to go. And that is why his agency will be on heightened alert. And we also reached out to Contra Costa County and heres what they say. We urge people not to call 911 if it is not an emergency because you could really impact our response times. But it wont feel that way for the families in the allen Rock School District which canceled class for all of its 25 campuses for the next two days. Huge inconvenience. You have to change your whole schedule and life around daycare for the next couple days. So mommy can go to work. Reporter pg e confirms at least four will be in the dark tomorrow. No power, no internet or foreign service, that will be the case for some schools in every bay area county. Again, the list is at nbcbayarea. Com and at the bottom of the screen. North bay schools are the most impacted. A lot of schools there along with schools in the east bay. And it is not just public schools. Junior college, sonoma state, all have closures as well. But of course those students are better able to fend for themselves. Pg e did warn that as many as 800,000 customers could be without power, so coming up, well talk about what you should do ahead of a power outage at home and once youre deep in it. Were in that microclimate weather alert, high winds, low humidity creating the increased fire danger. A lot of Power Outages out already. Were on earlier to bring you more and the latest information. Very busy day and it is all because of the wind. We have a strong cold front coming through the bay area and it will cause the humidity levels to drop and the winds to increase. So as we start out this morning, it is fairly calm in san jose. I think the main problem will be in our hills around the bay area. So if you are getting ready to head out the door, heading to the b. A. R. T. Station, it will be 63 degrees at 6 00 and then the rest of the day, you will notice a cooldown compared to yesterday. And lets look at the high temperatures. Back to close where we should be reaching 77 in san jose, 79 today in morgan hill. And then for the east bay, were up to 80 inpitsburg, antioch. And in San Francisco, we have some upper 60s expected this afternoon. And in the north bay, up to about 81 in novato, while santa rose will reach up to about 79. The 7day forecast is already at the bottom of the screen as we look at our wind forecast for today. So we are starting out with some breezy winds coming through the delta and as well as over towards some of the low lying areas in the trivalley and over toward Half Moon Bay as well. As we go through the morning, well start to see the winds picking up, coming in from the northwest, a very dry wind and as we look at the north bay where we see wind speeds at 8 00 at 26 Miles Per Hour. Throughout the day those winds get Even Stronger especially in those areas. S it is funneling in from the north into the bay area and so well see the winds very dry as they start to turn more offshore going into the evening, and that is when well see the change in humidity as the winds stay gusty. So we have the red flag warning in effect for the diablo range, east bayhills and into the north bay and parts of marin county included in the high fire danger. Santa cruz mountains will also see an increase in the fire danger, but the winds here will calm down a little bit earlier for tomorrow. But we are expecting at least 24 hours of some high winds across the bay area. Very dry today and then gusty tomorrow with temperatures in the mid80s. Well keep this fairly mild, falllike weather going into the weekend and San Francisco will see a slight warmup over the next couple of days. We do see some breezy winds, but not as strong heading into the weekend. And mike, youre watching the earlier commute. Were on earlier, so were looking at lighter traffic. But we have a couple issues regarding power. South bay up to San Francisco, no problems for those Speed Sensors. Everything is predictable there. Over here it is the highways, highway 29 at 221, reports of power lines that came down about 1 00 in the morning. So caltrans on the scene because of a couple signals there. No word on pg e. But pg e is here where we saw slowing highway 12 near kirkland ranch road. There is an issue with traffic lights along that stretch and that may be related to power down or the safety shutdown. So were tracking the purpose of that outage, but pg e is on scene. Were looking at the rest of the north bay, caldecott is open right now and a smooth drive getting toward the bay bridge.
