After a fiveweek break lawmakers returning to capitol hill today with plenty of Unfinished Business including gun safety legislation and quickly approaching deadlines to fund the government. About three weeks to resolve that government funding issue. Laundry list, a long laundry list of legislative items for lawmakers returning to capitol hill and not much time to get it all done. Lawmakers returning to capitol hill today still undecided on how to address gun safety legislation. Republicans say theyre waiting on President Trump. Were not going to vote on bills on the senate floor that the president s not willing to sign. The president needs to step up here and set some guidelines for what he would do. Reporter the president had voiced support for strengthening background checks. Theres a great appetite and i mean a very strong appetite for background checks. Reporter then backed off after talks with the nra. A series of Mass Shootings last month left 22 dead in el paso, texas, nine in dayton, ohio, and seven killed in odessa, texas. The odessa shooter failed a background check. Our bill would make sure that state Law Enforcement is promptly notified when someone fails a background check. Reporter democratic senator chris coons is talking with republican counterparts and the white house about now background check legislation. A letter from the Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer places background check legislation already passed by the house atop the to do list as well as securing 2020 elections from russian interference. Meantime, lawmakers have about three weeks to fund the government. Current legislation runs out september 30th. And hanging over all of this is a possible push by many House Democrats to begin an impeachment inquiry of President Trump. The House Judiciary Committee is expected to vote this week on defining the impeachment investigation. Federal authorities in Southern California are widening their investigation into last weeks deadly boat fire. Over the weekend, they executed search warrants at the offices of truth aquatics, the company that owns the conception diving boat. Its believed theyre looking for training, safety and maintenance records. The bodies of all but one of 34 victims have now been recovered, but the search is currently suspended due to rough water. Salvage crews plan to pull up the sunken boat later this week. A new surprise turn for the Richmond Police department. Hours after a vote of no confidence in chief alwin brown, the east bay times reports he is no longer serving his role. Brown is officially listed as out of office, but its not clear if that means that he resigned or if hes on administrative leave. Assistant chief french is taking over for the time being. Last week, the Union Announced more than 80 of the rank and file voted no confidence in brown. The suspect in a recent Sexual Assault is facing new charges, tied to another attack. Authorities credit the alleged victim with helping crack the case. 22yearold matthew han of Half Moon Bay is facing charges tied to two attacks. Investigators say in july he sexually assaulted a 15yearold girl while she walked her dog on a coastside trail. But the victim fought off her attacker, then Authorities Say the teen recognized hans photo in the newspaper after he was arrested in a similar assault case last month. It is 5 05 and developing this morning, maybe you missed this stunning video over the weekend, an overturned cargo ship off the coast of georgia, very big. Four crew members remain unaccounted for. It happened in the Early Morning hours yesterday when the crew was actually performing a turn on the st. Simons sound about 55 miles north of jacksonville but the ship started leaning toward its portside. 20 of the 24 crew members were eventually safely rescued. For thousands of dorian survivors left with nothing, this is from the island abaco. The goal right now is simply to find shelter. A mass exodus is under way. Refugees are trying to get to nassau, the largest city in the bahamas. So far about 3,000 people have made it off the island, but its believed that many people there never made it through the storm. Im very grateful, thanks to god for allowing us it to see another day. A lot of people died and i thought i was going to be one of them, and i just, we just started praying and everything and we survived. Right now there are 44 confirmed deaths in the bahamas but that number is still expected to rise dramatically, with many still unaccounted for. And remember the iconic image when dorian swept through the South Carolina coast last week . A couple that owns this red jeep wanted to get a closer look at dori dorian, they got stuck on the beach so they had to abandon their car. The images played out live for hours across cable news. The owners now asking for money, not for a new car but rather donations for hurricane victims in the babahamas, they already raised a couple thousand dollars. I guess trying to use the attention brought upon them in a positive way. Its going to be a tough time for them, a lot of people, kari, and things arent over yet. Its all the way out there, very far to the north. So far couldnt even find a satellite image to still track this storm as it moves closer to greenland. This is not going to be an issue for anyone else, as it continues to weaken, and so as we bring it back home a live look outside right now in walnut creek, heading out the door, we have some mostly clear skies, and a nice cool start to the day. Well see a few clouds throughout the 7 00 to 9 00 hours and then our temperatures steadily rising. Headed into the afternoon, here is a look at about where well see our high temperatures, only reaching the mid 80s in concord. 81 degrees in santa rosa, and in san mateo in the mid70s today, and then as those winds pick up this evening t cools off fairly quickly. Apple does say it used too many contractors for too long. Chinese law says contractors cant be more than 10 of your workforce, because they have fewer rights and benefits. Apple says the report from china labor watch is largely false, but wont say whats right and whats wrong. Apple has gotten much better with Worker Rights since tim cook took over, though i should point out before he came to be ceo, he was actually in charge of apple factories. Apple showing off new iphones tomorrow, this is not it but we understand most of the improvements are going to be in the camera, maybe some new colors like purple. My colleague david lee at the bbc says he expects apple is going to kind of wind these down. These are several time a year iphone updates. You may as well, and our temperatures head into the low 70s at noon. As we go into the rest of the day, heading out for a jog this morning, we are going to see around san carlos, parts of the peninsula, a comfortable start to the day with some low 60s and it does start to feel a little bit warmer, but not too bad. Were at 70 degrees at noon today. Our high temperatures are going to be still a little bit below normal, after that very strong cold front rolled through here on saturday. Antioch is reaching about 80 degrees. Well also see a high of 80 in morgan hill. 78 in palo alto, with oakland today reaching 73 degrees. Clearlake up to 78, so our temperatures very much like they were yesterday. You can see at the bottom of the screen, we do have some big changes ahead, as the week goes along. And here is whats happening, so we have that system that rolled through, with the breezy winds and also the much cooler temperatures, and it will still be mild and breezy tomorrow, going through wednesday, the warmup begins as High Pressure starts to nudge in from the Desert Southwest. We will see with that wind flow more of a southerly wind and then kind of an offshore wind, as get into the end of the week, and thats going to cause those temperatures to heat up in the valleys. So this is what were looking at, some upper 70s today, and tomorrow. A few clouds moving by, low 80s on wednesday, but look at how those temperatures spike on thursday and friday. Just as you wake up and wipe your eyes again, thats 98 degrees this friday, and it is going to be a hot weekend. Ill have more updates on that. Once the shelter opens the Department Says two officers will be dedicated to patrolling the area ten hours a day. Happening tomorrow, fremont will choose the location of its first homeless navigation star. The issue is leaving people who live and work into near there divided. Two locations are being considered. One near city hall and the other near a nursery in the north end of town. Leaders hope the center will be able to help up to 45 people at a time to find permanent housing. Well see our temperatures here only reach into the mid70s with our highs in the low 80s for the inland east bay, and mostly a lot of 70s here, so its going to be a great start to the week, but the end of the week not so much. Mike has a look at the bay bridge. The metering lights at the toll plaza, the left approach lightened up. There might have been a crash in the backup, there was not a crash and its not light anymore so we just had a temporary slowdown of traffic getting to the bay bridge. Slowdown across the incline and a new crash reported highway 4 at the 242 split. It sounds like everythings out of lanes but even that distraction could kick off a little more slowing in through bay point. Well track that as well as another issue, disabled vehicle on vasco, sounds like a minor thing but its major coming out of brentwood. It should get off to the shoulder. Well let you know. It starts on monday night football, but even before kickoff, the drama leading up to the game has been monumental, to say the least. Much of this has to do with the star wide receiver who says something burned them to go play in new england. Today in the bays bob redell is live at the coliseum where the raiders seem ready to turn the page on antonio brown. Reporter but Antonio Browns ten tour, sixmonth tenure with the raiders was downright bizarre, finally ended this past saturday morning when brown posts on social media he wanted the raiders to release him and they obliged and here was browns reaction as you could see in the video he posted online him running out into the backyard with glee, within hours, the new England Patriots signed brown to a oneyear deal worth 15 million, plus a 9 million signing bonus. Gosh, the guy is loud. This caps a tumultuous time with the team, an unusual foot injury that sidelined brown at the start of Training Camp and a fight with the nfl over his helmet, fined for missing a practice and walkthrough and fined again for getting into an argument with the raiders general manager. As a result of that fine, the raiders are no longer obligated to pay brown 29 million in contract guarantees which led to saturday morning, and browns request to be released from the team. I wish antonio nothing but the best, and im sorry that we never got a chance to see him in silver and black. Very disappointing. The raiders just wasnt a good fit for him. It sounded good on paperwork. It would have been good if he would have played with us, but we end up losing him after all. So it was his decision. The raiders have to go on. Developing for you in San Francisco, police are trying to track down the gunman who shot two people in a car, leaving one of them dead. This happened in the citys Crocker Amazon neighborhood. Responding officers found the victs still in the car around 9 00 last night near mission and geneva. The man in that car died but the woman is expected to survive. Investigators say right now, they have little to go on. In in the wake of the pg e bankruptcy filing the city is upping its push to get into the electricity business. Mayor london breed and the city attendant released a short statement that says the city has submitted an official offer letter to the Utility Company includes 2. 5 billion for the acquisition of assets that serve San Francisco. This is not the first time the citys tried to do this but now the utility is in bankruptcy, and facing liabilities for wildfires. State senator jerry hill supports the move. Im really pleased that San Francisco is making the offer. Now is the best time to do t since theyre in bankruptcy. Certainly they could use the money. Pg e put out a statement saying in part, it doesnt believe what it called municipalization is in the best interests of its customers. Forbes put out its list of most 100 innovative leaders and only one is a woman. Reporter the editor says the lists are not opinion, driven by data and methodology but how they use that data was flawed, came up with one woman, Barbara Rentler who leads dublin based ross stores. Rentler known for growing the discount retailers revenues to four times the worth of macys as of 2017. As soon as the forbes list posted on saturday, people started commenting about the lack of women. Women follow you, right, seems like the male list, a list of men created by men and forbes is woman blind. Here is how forbes explains which leaders can be considered for the list. They have to be the ceo or the founder of their companies, they have to lead Public Companies worth 10 billion or more, and ranking includes data on quantitative reputation, social capital, publicly traded track records. Forbes response is that methodology turned out to be flawed. Now, this pool ultimately proved the problem, women as we all know are poorly represented at the top of the largest corporations, just 5 of the s p 500, and fare even worse among growing public tech companies. In other words, for all of our carefully calibrated methodologies, women never had much of a chance here from the editor, who happens also to be a man. So why Silicon Valley is really well represented on the list but not just by its women leaders, because you have to be really at the tippit top and its hard to get there. So forbes is saying they should have used that opportunity to have that part of the conversation, why its so hard for women to ascend to that top office. They could have done an article on it. Right, and they also should have broadened who could be considered, because innovation doesnt just happen at the tapity top. North 101 where we typically see the slowing, what we have just a little bit. No problems out of the altamont. We have a little slowing and then the rest of the trivalley looks great. That disabled vehicle hasnt been a problem for vasco road, so everything should be okay out of brentwood. A new crash under where it says walnut creek, 680 at 24, everything sounds like its out of lanes. Chp will confirm that in the area. Friday is the peak of that heat and its still going to be very warm as we go into saturday as well as sunday and then for San Francisco reaching into the low 80s. Then well drop it back to the low 70s for the weekend. If youre going to be in the trivalley, heads up that we could see temperatures on friday reaching 100 degrees. And then on saturday, its still pretty hot, 95, but then we see those temperatures going down. By sunday were in the mid 80s. If youre planning to head to tahoe this weekend, its going to be very nice there with some upper 70s for friday and saturday, and then some low 70s by sunday, with a few more clouds. Were going to keep it mild in Half Moon Bay especially as we go into saturday and sunday, with some upper 60s. I think friday is the best day to head there. And then if were going to make weekend plans, we know its all dependent on the weather, so let me know where youre going.
