Hes going to kill me. Delevingney jimmy im like, hell laugh. Hell love it. Shes great shes great in the show. The show is a sort of 18th century dickensian, so its a period fantasy epic drama. It takes place in the burgue, which could be any big european city i play a detective investigating the murder of a fairy, a fae showgirl. So we have the fae folk, cara plays, as yo stonemoss, who is a fae. Theyre basically fleeing their war torn homelands theyre like the refugee migrants fleeing its not based on a book or any original i. P. , so thats kind of cool because were sort of liberated. The creator, travis beacham, kind of he even drew murals on his dormitory walls he wrote this 20 years ago and he had murals, he had a vision of the city jimmy its beautiful its very detailed. So its a sort of noir thriller, drama with a a beautiful love story between me and cara. Its really a wonderful social commentary, as well, which i love as an actor, if you get to do that a little bit in something is, you know, fear, really, and fear of life with the other and what that means. When the migrant refug coming in they all get sequestered to the row and then kind of the burguish people are very sort of suspicious about them so its a nice social commentary jimmy its gotten great reviews. Youre actually back on tour the record this is the first one in over a decade but i want to stress to everybody, the band never broke up apparently . No. We never broke up no. Jimmy how is that possible, though its just a fluid being [ light laughter ] jimmy so, you didnt release any music or any records in a long time it was strange, we had started, i think, right before you took this show on. Wasnt it, that we started Third Man Records and that sort of took me away for a little bit, and he started doing his own solo records some more but yeah, we just kind of kept thinking it was going to be next week, and next week, and it turned into be ten years later. [ laughter ] jimmy oh, my gosh. And how did you how did it why now . Like why did you just go, like, hey, i think its time. I havent heard from i we get that question a lot. Theres no real spectacular answer to it but there was a moment jimmy you were visited by aliens yeah. Well, last year, middle of last year, i think it was, i came over to jacks house to hear his solo album that he was working on yeah, i was astounded first of all, i loved it. But he said, ive got this other song called shine the light that doesnt seem to fit anywhere on it and sounds kind of more like a raconteurs song i think thats when it [ talking over each other lets take a stab at it and record it and see what happens jimmy and was it just like just like riding a a bike you went back in it was horrible it sounded horrible. [ laughter ] jimmy yeah, terrible our second take was good. Jimmy but you had an intersting thing about mixing this record, that i heard somewhere. That you have an f. M. Transmitter thats right. L. J. , little jack, we call him when he plays bass in the raconteurs, he bought me for christmas, about ten years ago, an f. M. Transmitter that i have in my studio what you can do is i go out to the car with a walkie talkie and we play the mix from the board and i bring it up on a di pointncy. We broadcast it on that frequency and then i can mix from the car in real time back to the engineer and i can say, turn the kick drum up in the chorus put more reverb on that guitar in that section. So its sort of mixing in real time while youre listening to it through the car speaker its a take on the motown thing. They used to, you know, run out to their cars they used to listen in their car theyd broadcast from their the a. M. Broadcast. Jimmy why the car . Because thats where you want to make sure motown was trying to make sure those frequencies were going to pop through an a. M. Radio. And thats where everybody listens to songs, you know i mean, thats where or you mostly listen to them. Every band tests, im sure the roots tested out their mixes in the car but this is taking it one step further. [ laughter ] mixing while youre in the car, back of the board, in real time jimmy i mean, you can ask me, ive made records. [ light laughter ] youve listened to jimmy ive listened to all my records in the car, yeah. I bring a record player in with me [ laughter ] actual turntable. Jimmy thats where i only listen to music. I play all my music in the car,a its absolutely illegal absolutely illegal jimmy you cant do that, radio. Jimmy the Christian Slater movie, yeah. It only goes 150 yards though jimmy do you guys remember meeting for the first time its been over 20 years. I do, yes backstage, about ten minutes ago. [ laughter ] hes a nice guy jimmy he seems like a nice guy. No, it was in prison. [ laughter ] that was what it was. No, it was not prison, it was the gold dollar in probably 98 the gold dollar was a famous detroit nightclub. Yeah, the gold dollar which recently burned down, sadly. It was like the cbgbs of detroit. Yeah, well i heard him play at the gold dollar, and i just couldnt believe what i was seeing and hearing, you know i mean tell him what happened. Oh, well, yeah, i was paying to get in, actually, and i thought it was a woman singing i thought it sounded like a woman. I thought, oh, cool, maybe the opener is a girl or something. Jimmy yeah but it was jack in fact it was jack i turned the corner. Jimmy your voice has changed since. And then it got weirder from there. I hit puberty jimmy congratulations on that, by the way, i forgot to call you [ light laughter ] jimmy you talk about your relationship you said that you both say it about each other, that youre kind of the strangest person youve ever met, about each other. I cant imagine he thinks that but i yeah, i certainly think that way [ laughter ] hes certainly right. We both think each other is very strange i think we think its funny, the things each other does i think thats why the band works so well, its not four guys who are all very alike, its four guys who are kind of different, but we all have similar tastes in music but very different personalities jimmy the chemistry definitely works because congrats, the albums number one on a bunch of charts the number one on billboard 200.
