Reporter valerie is running for congress, an investment manager from the chicago suburbs. She has never run for office before she is part of a surge of republican women across the Country Planning to run for the first time, for everything from school board to congress when i looked at our elected officials, i looked and said, too many people look the same. They dont have a background like mine or a voice like mine i think its the time. Reporter the disparity between republican and Democratic Women in office is stark. At the state level, twice as Many Democrats as republicans. In congress, just 21 republican women in the house and senate compared with 106 democrats. That may be about to change. There were even fewer women in congress. Reporter patty russo helped run the nonpartisan Womens Campaign School at Yale University for 20 years. Are you expecting to see a wave of female republican candidates in 2020 . Were already seeing it were seeing a lot of energy on the republican side like never before reporter demand is so great that, recently, the Womens Campaign School held its first ever training specifically for republican women covering the basics of running for elected office, from fundraising to messaging they bought into the narrative that were the party of angry, antiwomen, and it is just not true. Were the party of opportunity reporter the women told us they were motivated by everything from the kavanaugh hearings to the need for new policies on health care and immigration, and many worried the gop was failing to appeal to critical female voters. So many of us are republicans in hiding. That is a bold statement. You say republican women have its kind of hard to get behind sometimes, with some of the stuff thats happening i have found ive often had to say, im socially moderate, fiscally conservative republican same. Reporter almost all of you how would you define yourself . Conservative but pro life i think it is a good point. I think that theres room for all of that in the Republican Party. What im finding is that there seems to be like a litmus test if you dont pass these certain things, which dont even really match up, in my opinion, to what traditional Republican Values are, then youre not considered a republican anymore reporter how will you answer questions about how President Trump has, at times, spoken about women . You know, comments on things, it goes back to his tone, or how he was raised, or his family i dont judge people on that hes said dumb things ill say it like that. If my 5yearold and 9yearold cant be listening to the news because of comments made, it is disappointing. It wont dissuade me from running. There is more of a reason to show up there are women who will stand up and be in the Republican Party. Reporter the disparity between Democratic Women and republican women in congress, how does it hit you . In the 2018 elections, there were republican women who didnt make it through the primaries. Theyre not getting the support they need, training, financial support, all that kind of stuff. The other thing im running into is the committees are picking favorites before the primary that was the message i was getting from consultants, who said youll be seen as a troublemaker within the Republican Party reporter troublemaker. If you dont succeed. Youve forced a primary when there wasnt the need for a primary. Reporter let me ask you broadly about some of the things weve heard from some of your colleagues who want to run theyve been told, we dont run women because we dont want to play identity politics. I heard that, as well the Republican Party sees women as an identity and not equals within the party that can run necktoneck. I see it as an opportunity going forward. Were bringing awareness to it were hopefully bringing more people out of the shadows. I think there is a void, and were here to help fill it i do hope that i can one day look down and see the Republican Party as diverse as the democratic party, and still stand for the core Republican Values all of the women said they know they face an uphill climb, both within the party and among voters in fact, since that interview, two of the women lost their republican primaries guys, what struck me, this was a Diverse Group of women who had Different Reasons for wanting to get into the game of politics. They knew very little about it theyre really challenging themselves theyre that passionate about the issues. Whatever your politics, it is good to see so many women willing to get involved in the process and try to fix washington. Absolutely. Fascinating conversation thank you for that. I have to figure out how to do that. Is it better if they have high screen time that theyre watching educational things, that it is worth something you can see how much theyre in their phone, how much theyre in snapchat, how much theyre in instagram. Take advantage of knowing the data. What is another tip if you want to really monitor your childs online activity, there are easy to install programs one allows you to not only see the websites theyre visiting, you can also see their Text Messages you can get a comprehensive report of everything theyre on. Set and manage time limits you can even toggle their phone to allow the phone to only make texts or to make calls you can take it as far as you want there are programs that allow you to do that. You want it to be cold so it is nice and flaky after a while, youre going to slowly add water just like a tablespoon at a time keep mixing. What is the texture youre looking for . Youll get a nice sort of dough, but itll be somewhat sticky. Okay. Then youre going to cut it in half. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for half an hour to an hour we have two of them nice and ready. At least it is freezing out here, so the dough is nice and cold. Exactly right it is august whats going on . Im not ready. You want to make this slightly larger than 12 by 10 a handy back to school ruler to help you out. Hopefully parents have that around somewhere. Exactly 12 by 10 youll sort of cut it, just to make sure it is exactly 12 by 10 use your ruler youll go to the 5 inches. Kind of cut it down the line okay. Im eyeballing this. Yeah. Then youre going to make four 3 by 5 rectangles. I mean eight. Theres a lot of math involved im not going back to school. We have the rectangles were going to put about a tablespoon to 2 tablespoons of strawberry jam in each one. I imagine you dont want to go too much. Take one of those, and you can top it exactly, not too much or itll ooze out during the baking process. Use your fork for a decorative edge a tip, poke it with the fork or itll all ooze out refrigerate this for half an hour before you bake bake for about 20 minutes, uil theyre nice and golden. Look delicious. When they cool, you can make a quick icing with powdered sugar and some milk. Drizzle that on drizzle it on sprinkles. What kid would not want this . This is amazing. Right there you go look at that. Blueberries for more health. Now, Peanut Butter and jelly granola, a great togo snack. Delicious, by the way you cant go wrong with that. Strawberry jam, peanut better and honey. Add that well fold that in all right. Then were going to pour it into our oats. Okay. Uncooked oats . Uncooked oats, yup. You can do that, and ill add slivered almonds, some peanuts, oat bran, helping it come together, and cinnamon you can do tons of substitutions if you have a nut allergy. You can do seeds whats that oat bran. It is like in place of flour itll help it get all mixed together. Okay. Once that is mixed up, well add it to the baking sheet we bake it at 325 for 25 minutes. You want to stir it halfway so it doesnt burn. Okay. Look how nice and toasty it gets. Nice and golden brown once it is all done cooking, you can fold in some cranberries. Oh. I use cranberries because carson daly hates raisins. But likes cranberries yeah. There you go you can store it up to a week. Thats great. Great for breakfast, snacks, lunches. Pop it in the lunchbox.
