Kari, you showed the clouds, you were above the clouds. Were right in the clouds. A little fog at the golden gate bridge, that keeps things a little cooler here. Youre going to want cooler from the looks of karis forecast over there. Showing you san jose but i wanted to talk about the bay bridge toll plaza, ill just show you on the map thats not so dark, the withelllit and metering lights lit backup at the toll plaza. Rest of the drive easy. Authorities are investigating a San Francisco Police Officer after they say he shot a man across the bay overnight in Contra Costa County. Sharon katsuda is live in el cerrito. You were at a press conference that happened before the news started this morning. Detectives are saying this is maybe a criminal investigation at this point, sharon. Reporter thats right, kris and marcus. They called in the Contra Costa County sheriffs investigators to look at whats going on here. They just opened up this area, there used to be crime tape here and they werent allowing traffic through this area at the 24hour fitness in this parking lot. But you can see this across the street here with the red car, you can still see officers here on scene. Most of the investigators took off about a half an hour ago. Lets look at some of the video from last night. The Police Captain tells us they first received a call about a man shot at the gym nearby but then found a man with gunshot wounds across the street here on moser lane and kearney. The captain confirms an offduty San Francisco Police Officer shot the man. The police did not give details on what led up to the shooting. They also did not say whether the officer just got off of work or lives in this area. And police say that the mans gunshot wounds were not lifethreatening. New overnight, President Trump says china is ready to end the trade war. He made the comments at the g7 summit in france. Today in the bays tracie potts is live in washington, tracking those developments, and there seems to be some confusion between what the president is saying and what china is saying, tracie. Well President Trump said this morning chinas ready to come to the table, and end this trade war. This was an announcement just several hours ago. He says that while you were sleeping, china called, and said they want to start negotiations and that they have already started at the highest levels of government. Here is more from President Trump this morning. China called last night, our top trade people and said lets get back to the table, so well be getting back to the table and i think they want to do something. Theyve been hurt very badly, but they understand this is the right thing to do, and i have Great Respect for them. Now the president also this morning talked about iran and the fact that irans foreign minister showed up unexpectedly at the g7. He didnt meet with minister zarif but says he was aware that he was coming. He was fine with others meeting with him, and that there will be a joint Statement Today about iran and preventing iran from getting nuclear weapons. So while they may be united on that front, there seems to be a lot more that we need to learn about whats happening between the u. S. And china, and the bottom line of that is this trade war, the backandforth tariffs have started to raise prices here in the United States. So if theyre able to work things out, it could ease the tension and ease the pressure on your wallet. Especially at a time when so many families are spending money to get the kids back to school and get them, you know, ready for the year. So were watching closely. New overnight, this grass fire here in fremont, this started around midnight, interstate 680 just north of mission, san jose. It closed two southbound lanes. Firefighters had it out in less than an hour. It burned about two acres. A major Fire Prevention project begins today in the santa cruz mountains. Crews will break ground on a six and a half mile fire break along highway 17 from los gatos to the summit. The idea here is to create an escape route in the event of fire evacuations and to stop any potential fire from reaching the roadway. People we spoke with say its needed. Look at paradise, and what happened up there, and really and truly at the end of the day, their problem is because nobodys cleared the woods up there in 50, 75 years and we have the same problem here. Crews will clear all brush up to 150 feet from the edge of the highway. That work will take several months and sections of highway 17 may be shut down a while, while some of that work is being done. Meantime, firefighter its are making more progress in the fire burning in shasta county. The mountain fire is now 80 contained. Its burned 600 acres since thursday. All evacuation orders and road closures are now lifted. New overnight, a scare for seven people who escaped this plane that crashed in Santa Barbara and then caught fire. An airport Spokesman Says the pilot declared an emergency before that crash landing. Witnesses say the plane skidded more than 500 feet before it stopped. Its still not clear at this point what caused that crash. Authorities are still investigating a deadly headon crash in east Contra Costa County. This happened just before 9 00 in the morning in brentwood on balfour road near american avenue. Investigat investigators say a driver of an nissan alt ma hit an oncoming mini van. Witnesses describe what they say happened. Silver nissan was going eastbound behind me at a high rate of speed, tried to pass me, hit me, swerved into the other lane, and hit the toyota van headon. Im so sorry for the poor man, sorry for his family, its traumatizing to see Something Like this. It really is. The driver who died has not been identified. Police are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol played a role. 6 07 right now. All new video showing a brutal hitandrun, this in denver. This is hard to watch and disturbing, too. Thats what happened at the height of the chaos, right before that, officers were responding to a fight in a busy street. A car plowed through that scene, hitting two people. You saw them flying over. Both were taken to the hospital but neither was seriously injured. Police are still looking for the driver involved. The caribbean is bracing for a possible hurricane. Forecasters say Tropical Storm dorian is likely packing 50mileperhour winds and heading west. The National Hurricane center state the storm could approach hurricane strength by tomorrow. People in puerto rico and Eastern Caribbean are preparing for the pop hit by a Tropical Storm. Stores were busy selling storm related supplies. The National Hurricane center says some caribbean islands could get as much as six inches of rain, so a lot of rain coming out that way, kari, right now. People need to brace for the possible worst. We talked about puerto rico recovering from past hurricanes and so now we see this tropical system, still a Tropical Storm, approaching the Windward Islands and the track is to move closer to puerto rico late tuesday into early wednesday and strengthen to possibly a category 1 hurricane as it nears the dominican republic. Well be watching this throughout the week. A little bit closer to home, weve had some tropical moisture from the remnants of what was trapping ivo and that continues to move in, and bring in higher humidity. It will feel muggy tomorrow as well as wednesday and were also going to see more clouds. Beautiful sunrises and sunsets, and also some hot temperatures. Over here, getting away from the east shore freeway, we have slowing toward the mayor island connector at the napa river. Closer to sonoma creek, no injuries. I see that slowing an additional slowdown for folks headed west toward novato, lakeville highway. Westward across the richmondsan rafael bridge and the bay bridge the volume builds. Amazon hard to tell if it fell as part of a larger hit on the market or because of reaction to a friday wall street journal article that documented how amazon is allowing unsafe products to be sold on its site. The headline reads amazon at ceded control of its site. The journal found more than 4,000 items for sale on amazon declared unsafe by federal agencies. That got the attention of the ftc commissioner who said this article raises real concerns whether amazon is profiting from widespread deception on its platform. Deceptive acts or practices can threaten health and safety and are unlawful. Lets go to the trade war. President trump stated the chinese called to ask for a restart in the trade talks. That made wall street very happy, but the Chinese Foreign minister ace hes not aware of any such phone call. Hes been making tremendous news with tweets as well including ordering American Companies to move out of china and calling the american head of the Federal Reserve an enemy. Fed chairman jay powell was appointed by trump to replace janet yellen. The Washington Post quotes white house insiders saying President Trump replaced yellen in part because she was short. Yellen was an economist, jay powell is not but certainly not the enemy of the United States either. President trumps also asked us to measure the success of the stock market based on how much it has jumped since he was elected, not the recent increases. The dow, the night of the ju over 5100. 18,332, the nasdaq we have come a long way since that. Were watching wall street. Futures were much higher on this idea of these apparently two phone calls to either lighthizer or navarro. They are being noncommittal on this. The Chinese Foreign minister says the phone calls didnt take place. President trump says for sure they did. Lets get started this morning with a look at what to expect as you head out the door in palo alto. At least it starts out nice and cool with some low 60s, but as we head toward 10 00, were at 75. It is 87 at 1 00 there today, and as we get ready for the first day of school for those kids headed back to school in hayward, happy first day. Well start out with upper 50s. As you are walking to school, headed out for recess, it will be nice and comfortable, reaching into the mid70s there and 80 degrees for the last school bell. There will be some hot areas in the south bay, inland east bay. Were up to 97 today in morgan hill. And for the east bay we could see some spots reaching 100 degrees, up to 100 in antioch, 97 in livermore, and 85 in hayward. For Half Moon Bay were at 67, i think the fog will not clear out today and well see some mid 80s on the other side, in palo alto. San francisco reaching 73 degrees, and up to 101 in ukiah today, while mill valley reaches 86 degrees, point reyes at 75. Here is whats going on. We still have some High Pressure thats been very slow to move, and also the coastal fog, but as we go into tomorrow, this will help draw in some tropical moisture, some subtropical moisture as we go into the next couple of days so thats going to make it feel very humid, and then by the end of the week, that High Pressure is moving away and our temperatures will come down just a little bit as the air dries out as well. So we are in the hottest day of the week right now. 97 degrees, and then some low 90s tomorrow, but that humidity is going to make it feel not at all any cooler, and then by the end of the week, were in the upper 80s and mike, that south bay commute is just now waking up. But now its waking up to higher humidity. Im not a fan of that either. Cant please me, i guess. Looking over here hopefully this is pleasant for most of our south bay commuters, just waking up here, 101 coming up in toward santa clara, a little slowing shows up. San jose 101, 87 looking great. San jose state second week of construction. Youll have the add drop period trying to figure out what classes to take. A lot of folks traveling through surface streets. South 680 and south 880 Holding Steady, just a bit of slowing toward fremont for both of the freeways respectively. Fremont is a big city. Moving toward the other side of the bay, the peninsula, no delays, no problem across the dumbarton bridge or san mateo bridges. Toward the bay bridge a little bit slower through richmond and san pablo and holding up with the slowing around west 37 and sonoma creek. A crash but no injuries reported. Chp having trouble getting there. No trouble getting to the bay bridge, just 22 minutes from highway 4 to the backup at the toll plaza that we talked about and a live look shows you oakland northbound commute through oakland is great, at speed through the coliseum. The countrys satellite Monitoring Agency recorded more than 41,000 fires in the region so far this year, with more than half of those coming this month alone. Experts say most of the fires were set by farmers or ranchers who were clearing existing farmland. Brazils federal Police Agency announced yesterday it would investigate those reports. A popular South Bay Park remains closed because of mountain lions. People are being turned away from Rancho San Antonio and the cupertino hills. The reason why youll see in just a second. We want to show you there, rangers posted video of two mountain lions, well hopefully see those shortly. There you go right there. Just walking along the trail there. Turns out the entire family of those mountain lions prowling through the trails. Mountain lions arent usually in that area but rangers say these cats do not appear to be afraid of people. Safety for themselves and for the safety of the animals within the park, and again, we appreciate their patience while we work through this process. For the past three months, weve been working with samsung back and forth, and with little or no progress. So ruben called us. Our team contacted home depot, because home depots return policy says it handles problem appliances when theyre documented within 48 hours of delivery. Willow glen 65 degrees at 9 00 and upper 70s at noon reaching the upper 80s again today which is above normal and highs reaching 90 degrees in downtown san jose. There will be a couple of spots reaching 100 degrees and its still going to be very hot for some of the valleys, but then well have some cooling as we go through the week, so ill talk more about that in just a few minutes. Reporter one police unit is left here and it looks like the investigator is talking to someone inside the apartment complex which was the focus of the investigation. The doorway there at the apartment complex. Lets look at some of the video that was shot overnight. The Police Captain tells us they first received a call about a man shot at the gym nearby, a man with gunshot wounds bawas found across the street. In the south bay three robberies caused a big scare and a lockdown at the great mall in milpitas. Rob, in the wake of the Mass Shootings including the one in gilroy this was a terrifying moment for a lot of people. Seems like it was. Hundreds of shoppers panicked because a number mistakenly thought there was an active shooter on property. Take a look at your tv screen. Cell phone video shows some of the people running away from the mall. We know others hid inside storage rooms in the back of the stores. Shoppers tell us they heard loud sounds around 7 30 last night near a Jewelry Store. Someone yelled gunman which started a Chain Reaction. People posted there was an active shooter at the great mall which added to the chaos and confusion. As it turns out there was no active shooter but three men did go into the diamonds by klary store smashed the displays and stole jewelry. Everyone went on lockdown and everyone was running in the hallways look a stampede. It was kind of scary. I was trying to get away from that area. I just, you know, i felt like i was in a movie. I felt like, you know, we see all those, everything on the news. I just didnt want nothing to happen to my kids. Reporter Milpitas Police did lock down the mall for a few hours and with the help of the Santa Clara County sheriff, san jose police, chp and mall security, they conducted a sweep of the property to see if anyone was hurt and also to confirm whether or not there was an active shooter, which there wasnt. They cleared the mall around 10 40 last night. Law enforcement is still looking for the three robbers. Reporting live in milpitas, bob redell, today in the bay. Certainly a scary moment out there, bob, thank you. As we mentioned, oddly this was one of three cases involving similar scenarios across california hours apart. In modesto four men shattered Jewelry Store glass at vintage fair mall and shoppers mistook that sound for gunfire and people ran for their lives, happened about 5 00 in the evening. After the mall was evacuated police determined no shots were fired. Earlier in the day in Southern California in the San Fernando Valley there was a smash and grab robbers targeted a Neiman Marcus store. Shoppers said they thought it was an active shooter as well. Police determined there were no shots fired there. Officers made two arrests in connection with what was a robbery. Happening today, one of four people accused in a shootout that sparked chaos at san brunos tanforan mall is due in court for a plea hearing. This happened in early july. It sent people running for their lives. Four people were injured. Authorities eventually arrested three juveniles and one adult. That adult, 18yearold deandre gant, is due in court today in redwood city. Developing now, in eastern Contra Costa County the search for a missing man in the waters of Discovery Bay is now sadly a recovery effort. Authorities say efrin cruz and a friend were fishing in an inflatable raft around 4 00 in the morning yesterday when the raft popped. His friend swam back to shore but cruz did not make it. First responders searched for hours as people who live nearby looked on. I thought it was perhaps just a training mission, because i saw them every 30 minutes or so circling back and forth. So it was hard for me to learn that it was somebody in dire need. The coast guard says that the two men were not wearing life jackets. Bridging the gap between Law Enforcement and the lgbtq community, happening today, in San Francisco, the first in a series of meetings when the two sides come together to share personal experiences. This is being called a reflection and Reconciliation Forum at glide memorial. The meeting marks the 53rd anniversary of the cafeteria riot. It inspired the Liberation Movement and claims of mistreatment by police. We live in a time where theres a lot of intersectional issues so at the same time that some people feel like their rights are easing and that laws affect them less, there are other communities that feel like theyre more vulnerable. The San Francisco Police Department is organizing this particular event, but it is being held at glide Memorial Church tonight. 6 37. Some of us have even broken down in tears on situations, others of us have used one or more lines as a list of excuses. What im talking about here is when Police Officers pull you over. What excuse do you use to get them from writing you a ticket . New for you today, a survey shows that 82 freely admit to speeding, then the survey asked when stopped by police what excuse do you use . 24 claimed they say this, they didnt realize they were speeding and 18 said that they were late for work. 14 remarked they were going as fast as everyone else, and there were other excuses as well. So a speeding ticket that tip clip comes with fines and auto increases up to 30 . Most of the time that i got stopped, i havent got stopped in a long time id be honest. South 880 through hayward and union city and westbound 92 across the flat section of the san mateo bridge, its a very mild build right now. Its feeling warm already in the studio. Thats where were going to go this afternoon. By this weekend, kari, do we have to find that little patch of fog . It wont be as hot as the previous weekend but were still talking upper 80s and low 90s. San francisco will be the cool spot once again, with some highs near 70 degrees. This morning in Southern California, evacuations are being lifted as crews gain the upper hand on this brush fire burning right near downtown los angeles. Happening today, hundreds plan to rally in the south bay to remember an Important Movement in american history. Its the womens suffrage and gaining the right to vote. This video is showing special 2020 voting registration kits organizers plan to have out there. Todays rally kicks off or the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote. It will follow a march in downtown san jose. The rally includes the leaders giving soap box speeches. Santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez says it is a direct reflection of what women used to do to get their voices heard. There were these rallies and marches, so they would march down the street and women would bring their soap boxes with them. Theyd be carrying their soap boxes and look for a corner, if people stopped to listen, put out their soap box, jump up on it and talk to people as long as they would listen about the right to vote and why it was important for women to get the right. While the inland areas will have to deal with some more high heat, and some unhealthy air quality, the inland east bay will have a spare the air day. We can already see a lot of cars out there, walnut creek. So if you can, carpool. Catch public transit, and try to spare the air today. If youre out in dublin, we have some unhealthy air quality so youre making your way to the b. A. R. T. Station, expect some low 60s to start, but really hot by this afternoon, as we reach into the mid 80s by early today. Were going to see the livermore temperatures reaching 97. 100 in antioch. 96 in clear lake. Santa rosa reaching 94 rein palo alto today up to 87. We still have our stagnant air, not a lot of movement here, with some fog lingering near the coast. What will happen over the next couple of days . Well see a tropical system thats been weakening, the remnants of it pushed some high clouds and some moisture into the bay area. So thats going to make it feel very sticky outside. So even though temperatures come down a few degrees, that humidity is still going to make it feel very hot, with some low 90s in some of our hotter areas and we will see the trend with our temperatures coming down headed toward the end of the week. Finally by thursday, friday its going to feel nicer, as we get some lower humidity and some lower temperatures as well. San francisco well be watching the follow rolling by with highs in the low 70s. No problems getting across the bay. Eventually in the next half hour well see there it is, san mateo slowing 101 at 92 and the south bay, typical northbound and westbound push. San jose not as bad as the slowing we see at san martin which is predictable. Investigators finally left an east bay neighborhood where police say an offduty San Francisco Police Officer shot a man in el cerrito. It happened about 10 00 last night in el cerrito on moser lane near the 24hour fitness there and it looked like this. Police called in Contra Costa County investigators, since it was an officerinvolved shooting, thats normal protocol. At this point, officers are not saying whether the officer had just gotten off work or lived in the area or why he was there. Police say the mans gunshot wounds are not lifethreatening, that he was armed but not with a hand gun. Right now we want to take a live look at the great mall in milpitas this morning. Police are investigating a smash and grab robbery that caused a scare. They heard some loud bangs a little before 8 00 last night near a Jewelry Store, and someone yelled gunman.
