Good morning to you. The president is in an allout showdown with the phish. And its all about whether that memo should be released. Republicans argue the document shows the fbi just went too far in ordering surveillance on a former Trump Campaign official. But the fbi is urging the white house not to release the memo, citing grave concerns. Democrats are crying foul. Theyre trying to block its release. But all sides suggest the president s mind may be made up. This morning, building toward a potential bombshell, that controversial republican memo will likely be released as early as today. The document purportedly alleges there was misconduct in ordering surveillance and an antitrump bias within the fbi and just department. The president ignoring shouted questions about the matter weapons. Mr. President , any response to the fbi saying in that statement that the nunes memo should not be released . The fbi launching a Rare Campaign to prevent the classified documents release. On monday, director Christopher Wray and Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein went to the white house to ask the president s chief of staff not to make the memo public. Two sources familiar with the matter tell nbc news. Then wednesday, the fbi releasing an extraordinary Public Statement, warning of grave concerns about facts left out that fundamentally impact the memos accuracy. The statement coming on the heels of President Trump indicating hes all but decided. Dont worry. 100 . Can you imagine . White house chief of staff john kelly echoing his body boss. It will be released pretty quick and the whole world can see it. Adding fuel to all of it, House Intelligence Committee chairman, devin nunes, attacking the fbi and doj accusing the agencies of having stonewalled congresss demands for information for nearly a year. But a new wrinkle from the ranking democrat on the committee, adam schiff, sending a letter to nunes, suggesting the memo sent to the white house for review had been materially altered from the one the committee agreed to release. Nunes calling the changes cosmetic. And the accusation an attempt to stop the memos release. Overnight, democrats fuming that the republicanled committee voted mott to include the democratic response to the memo. And another headwind for the white house this morning, cnn reporting that back in december during a meeting with Deputy Attorney general Rod Rosenstein, President Trump wanted to know where the special counsels russia investigation was heading and wanted to know if rosenstein was on my team. The white house not responding to multiple requests for comment during a hearing on capitol hill just after his meeting with the president , rosenstein was pressed on the appropriateness of a loyalty pledge. Is it ever appropriate for the president of the United States to demand a department of justice official or fbi director take a loyalty pledge . I dont have an opinion about that, congressman. Nobody has asked me to take a loyalty pledge, other than the oath of office. And this morning, one of the president s closest advisers, hope hicks, is on defense after the New York Times reported overnight that one of the president s former attorneys, mike corallo, is planning to tell special Counsel Robert Mueller that hicks said potentially damaging emails involving donald trump jr. Just a reminder, this train was carrying members of congress to the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. This morning, this is an accident investigation, not criminal. The ntsb is on the scene. Federal Railroad Investigators on the scene trying to figure out how this garbage truck, which was totally ripped apart, as you can see behind me, how it ended up at the wrong place at the wrong time. It happened in one lightning fast horrific moment. Mass casualty incident, level one, train versus truck. A chattered amtrak train carrying republican members of congress, their staff and families to a retreat in West Virginia, slicing through a garbage truck on the tracks just west of charlottesville, virginia. We were having a regular train ride and all of a sudden we felt a strong jolt, a really loud sound. We noticed some of our colleagues who w loud sound. We noticed some of our colleagues who were standing fell to the floor. North dakota congressman kevin cramer was doing a live radio interview from the train. Im looking at the garbage truck. The back end has been separated from the cab. And the garbage is all over the ditch. Yeah, i dont know whether everyones okay. Im mott sure whether thats how long, maybe five or ten minutes and within moments, the ems showed up. That victim, 28yearold christopher foley, died at the scene. Another person aboard the truck in Critical Condition. Everyone knew what they should be doing and took a rooi role in trying to save life from cpr with one gentleman to maintaining bleeding and controlling airways. Witnesses say the Railroad Crossing signals were working and the crossing gates were down. Unfortunately, train vehicle collisions happen almost every week in america. Later today, authorities in one town will publicly apologize to a woman who reported nassar to them more than a decade ago, but they believed him instead of her. Today, a mea culpa by police in michigan. We were wrong in 2004. We were deceived by nassar. A deception gymnast breann randall gay says led to even more abuse at the hands of dr. Over the last several years mel gibson has tried to overcome a number of personal scandals that have tarnished his blockbuster career. Now, the star who played jesus in the original movie is opening up about gibsons plans for a followup. Its the hollywood sequel few people saw coming. The passion of the christ was released more than a decade ago on a 30 million budget. The film, spoken entirely in the ancient language of old arabic, depicts the crucifixion of jesus. It earned more than 600 million and remains one of the highest grossing films in history. Now after more than a decade, mel gibson is set to direct a passion sequel. Actor jim kazivel saying its going to be the biggest film in history. The news comes as gibson is attempting a comeback of his own, after that now infamous dui in 2006 when gibson went on an antisem mettic tirade forcing him off of hollywoods alist. He issued an apology describing his actions as a moment of insanity and a public humiliation on a global scale. That incident was followed by Domestic Violence charges in 2011 that were dropped after a plea deal. Despite the scandals, gibson still has two of the top three highest grossing faithbased films of all time, including hacksaw ridge which earned him a best director actor nomination last year. Starting today, target is launching a new sameday Delivery Service in yet another attempt to compete with other retail giants, amazon and walmart, and we got an exclusive look at how it works. This morning your target run is about to get a little easier. The retailer now launching new sameday delivery in the southeast u. S. The Service Comes after target purchased the company shipped for more than half a billion dollars last month. Starting today, customers can log on to the shipped app to choose from 50,000 target items. An industrywide shift away from typical Online Shopping towards ondemand delivery like amazon key and nordstrom local, that allow customers to pick exactly when an order arrives. Target clearly sees the writing on the wall. If theyre going to stay competitive, they need to up their convenience game to remain competitive with the likes of walmart, jet, and amazon. A new push to get what you want when you want it. This Major Development comes as analysts speculate whether amazon will try to buy target this year. Experts say the two retailers share a lot of the same customers and that it was the tip of the hand when amazon bought whole foods last summer. Yesterday morning this was a horrific scene in a crash that left one member of that garbage truck dead. This morning federal investigators are looking for answers. At the scene of that horrific crash, involving a train carrying republican lawmakers to a retreat. All of a sudden we felt a strong jolt. A really loud sound, we noticed that some of our colleagues who were standing fell to the floor. Reporter at 11 20 a. M. Wednesday the train cut through a garbage truck on the tracks just west of charlottesville, virginia. While injuries were minor, doctors started helping victims in the truck. We did cpr for several minutes and within moments the ems showed up. Reporter that victim died at the scene. Another person aboard the truck in Critical Condition. Everyone knew what they should be doing. And took a role in trying to save lives. Reporter witnesses say the signals were working and the crossing gates were down. Unfortunately train vehicle sli collisions happen all the time. At 50 Miles Per Hour it take take an amtrak train half a mile or more to stop. If you get struck here and the gates are coming down, break through the gate or get out of your car and run. You driver right through that gate. It will break away. Reporter this morning, far more questions than answers about how this trash truck ended up in the path of an amtrak train. Some people who live in the area said those gates have malfunctioned in the past, but yesterday witnesses said they were working and the lights were working. The president could release a classified republican memo tied to the Russian Investigation as early as today in a Public Statement on wednesday, the fbi said it has grave concerns about it. Wherever i went, i took memories of my midwestern upbringing with me. High school in south dakota, starting college at the university of iowa. I used to live in this room. Oh, really . Yeah. In this dorm room where i went from wiz kid to college dropout. Thats the news, im tom brokaw. But i recovered and joined nbc news in 1966. Lets see how they love to study in groups. And now the ultra modern iowa library is cataloging the career of a student who stumbled but managed to recover. Weve got boxes and boxes. Boxes and boxes. More stuff than i realized. I invited my colleague, craig melvin, the new nbc news generation, to join me at iowa. For, among, a basketball game. This is something that really caught my attention. And to help me look through the evidence of a lifetime of reporting. Some time from the days of watergate, long before the 24 7 news cycle. Do you remember this . I do. This is the committee on the judiciary of the house of representatives, the hearings on Richard Nixon and watergate. It was the bible. And it was an attempt on the part of the white house to say, see, he was not involved. My question is this, arent your statements to that matter historically inaccurate or at least misleading . Now man is on the moon, his footsteps for all to see, the echo of his voice to be heard throughout the length of time. And where am i. You wrote a poem about the moon landing. Thats so unlike me. But i remember being transfixed by seeing it. And the whole country and the whole world was. In fact it came at a time when america needed a lift and everybody was able to focus on the moon and say we can do the big stuff. And i think it was one of the big moments in my life. I went to iowa and i had High Expectations, they had High Expectations for me, but after a year of very undistinguished scholarship, i went back to south dakota and then dropped out again for a while and Meredith Brokaw came alalong an rescued me and straighten meade out. Iowa always kept in touch with me. I was on the floor of one of the conventions and this very familiarlooking man came over to me, he had been one of my Political Science professors. He said mr. Brokaw, i have so admired your reporting and someone told me you might have been in one of my classes. He said i went back and looked up your record. I have a question, was it my fault or yours . It was all mine. As president reagan said, it worked out for you. It worked out pretty well for both of us, right. Its impossible to rnsanswer but is there one story that stands out . Theres quite a collection. The Civil Rights Movement i was in the south. In 1968 we lost dr. King and bobby kennedy, johnson stepped down. 15,000 people died in vietnam that year, americans of ours, so ive always thought about that. And then that rush of extraordinary change where the soviet union collapsed, china reinvented itself, and then finally 9 11. Those are the big, big markers i think in my career that ill always remember. Tom, what was it like to see your whole career laid out like that . That must have been amazing, fascinating for you. Well, especially because i have this kind of quirky memory. I remember everything from my young days in south dakota. I have a lot of ambition, a real working class family. I wanted to see the world on somebody elses nickel. Then i realized i kind of overwished because i saw the world in ways i never could have anticipated. And its very gratifying. The nice thing is that the university of iowa and greg perkman, one of the archivists there, said this will be really important for students to go back and understand what happened with history and learn from that as well. And i think with all due respect to craig, i think its all good for the next generation of reporters to see that. For me growing up, i watched three guys. Bernard shaw, bryant gumbel, and tom brokaw. And it was just a tremendous honor to see not just your life in front of me, but to see the history of this great country. Thank you so much for the invitation. It was great having you out there. The tritips are something we eat a lot of t. Its sirloin, same part of the cow but a different cut. I go to the butcher and ask for it. Youve got a little rubs. A little homemade rub . Homemade rub. This is typical rub. Is it coffee . Thats coffee. We also have cinnamon, so its a beautiful mixture. Kind of your typical rub. Get this really good and put this on. What is the coffee . Does the meat taste like coffee . It doesnt taste like coffee, it gives it a smoky, bitter flavor but it crisps the outside of this baby. I would let it sit at least two hours. Overnight is perfect. So then weve got our rub here and we can go to the grill and i can show you guys the spot here. So what i like to do is a quick high heat sear. This is what you want id t to lk like. Put the tritip right on the hottest part of the grill, five, six minutes a side and then put it on indirect heat and let it go. For how long . What is the internal temp . 130. Slice it up and make your sandwich. Slice it up, bring it over here. Weve got some sliced meat over here. This is what it looks like. We got a little bit of this. You know this. This is horseradish cream sauce. So buttermilk, sour cream, mayo, lemon zest, the horseradish here, worcestershire. This is big boy style right here. Savannah, take it away. Over here mark and i, were going to make pizza. How are we doing this . Were doing detroitstyle deep dish pizza but on a grill. So detroit style pizza is two things, one, wisconsin brick Cheddar Cheese and this detroitstyle pan. You can get it online or do it in a lasagna pan. Got our dough. No rollers needed. Drop it in, coat it in olive oil, just push it out with your pirn fingers. Now, you need to cook the dough a little bit so well drop this on the grill. I didnt know you could make pizza on the grill but im not known for my cooking skills. Close the lid, let it cook three or four minutes and then okay. Now for the fun stuff. That looks good. Weve got a little sauce. Make your own or do store bought . We do a real simple uncooked sauce. Typically a detroitstyle pizza would be sauce on top but we find this to be a little easier. One of the other keys for detroitstyle pizza is youve got to get all the way to the edge because where the cheese hits the side of the pan it crisps up. Throw on all this meat . Exactly. Were almost out of time. How long do you put it on the grill when its done . Seven to eight minutes until the cheese is bubbly and crispy and delicious.
