A witness told nbc news the attackers seemed to be targeting foreigners and people working with the government. The u. S. State department is working with local authorities to determine if any of the victims are american. All in the name of diplomacy, i guess. We move now, to a story weve been following closely. Its a disturbing one, that house of horrors in Southern California. This morning, were learning more about the children who police say were brutally tortured by their own parents over a number of years. Miguel almaguer has been following it for us. Reporter the suspects in this case face life in prison for criminal charges that are unimaginable. The victims, their 13 children are being cared for at local hospitals. And were starting to get a clearer picture of their lives. Investigators say the torture and confinement came to an end here but it started years ago for david and Louise Turpins 13 children. These photos show the expectant mother a crib and a tiny nursery. More family photos show smiling children though weve obscured their faces. They wouldnt tell us their names. We had to guess their names. Reporter but neighbors had their suspicions. When she was a kid, she lived next door to the family a family she says was anything but normal. I just remember more than anything that they were real strange people. And it hurt my feelings that they didnt want to play with me. And i didnt understand much else than that at the time. Reporter the turpins who filed for bankruptcy lived in texas before moving to california. Those who bought their properties say they found filthsplattered walls, mold and mildew everywhere. So much squalor, the homes had to be gutted. Its amazing they had children in conditions like this. Reporter Billy Baldwin found this photo of a rope tied to a bed after he bought the turpins home. Prosecutors say the turpins chained and shackled their children. There were beatings strangulation and starvation. A classmate of one of the older children who briefly attended a community college, remembers a School Pot Luck they both attended. It was apparent that he was hungry. But the children are living in a hell of their own, created by the parents who were supposed to protect them. David and Louise Turpin have entered not guilty pleas.
