Temperatures in the low to mid 40s its a cool start with our high temperatures today in the upper 50s and lower 60s. California Highway Patrol investigating a shooting on southbound 280 right now. Today in the bays pete suratos is live at the scene. This is off of alamay boulevard. What do you know so far . Reporter good morning. Well, i can tell you as youre driving on 280 south three lanes are blocked and theyre telling folks to go off of alameni boulevard in San Francisco. What were getting as far as information goes from chp is there was a potential freeway shooting here early this morning. They shut down this freeway at about 3 30 a. M. But apparently this incident may have happened around 3 00 a. M. The most important part right now, guys, is you can see this traffic, it could be a traffic issue this morning as we are actually standing on the freeway. You got about three lanes blocked off. Once youre coming off that 101 split, on 280 south, you will have to get off it looks and appears from our Vantage Point getting off at alamany boulevard. Theyre investigating a potential shooting incident on the freeway. Im going to try to grab a person with chp to get more information. We will continue to monitor this. It could be a big time traffic issue this morning, but we will have another update in the next hour. Live in San Francisco, pete suratos for today in the bay. Also caught on camera, you have to see this for your own eyes. Full on brawl, this is inside a pizza parlor in newark. That fight went on for two hours before Newark Police had to call in officers from fremont to help out. Today in the bays thom jensen spoke to several witnesses and has the reason the fight started. Reporter it started about 9 00 inside the arcade section when a girl went looking for her missing phone inside the restaurant. And this broke out when she asked the group of people if they saw the phone. Other customers and workers got caught right in the middle of it. Next thing you know there is just a massive brawl, people throwing fists and it was quite crazy. Reporter drake lynn works at johns incredible pizza, he says he saw two young women arguing about a phone and then it got physical. Their boyfriends or whoever, males that they were with, backed them up and they started throwing punches and their friends started throwing punches and they started throwing punches at other parties that were there. Reporter in the end there was no cellphone theft. Find my iphone led the girl to that location, but it was a floor above them in lost and found. We would have definitely found the cellphone if they had just given us a little bit of time to let us do our jobs instead of throwing punches. Reporter thom jensen, nbc bay area news. At 4 33 right now Homeland Security secretary working to restore trust after saturdays terrifying false alert in hawaii. Did you hear about this . Widespread panic caused by the government alert, it warned hawaiians of an incoming Ballistic Missile attack. Took officials 38 minutes to tell the public the warning was a mistake. Homeland security assured americans that Alert Systems are not to be ignored. Yesterday the Homeland Security secretary said mistakes like these are extremely rare. I would hate for anybody not to abide by alert and warnings coming from government systems. They can trust government systems, we test them every day. There is no reason the mistake couldnt be corrected sooner. The missile alert system was put in place after tensions escalated between President Trump and north koreas kim jongun. Our coverage of the false Emergency Alert continues at 7 00 as the today show looks deeper into that investigation. We turn now to continuing coverage of the after matt of montecitos deadly mudslides. The death toll in the disaster rose to 20 over the weekend. Searchers found the body of a 30yearold father on saturday. Four people including that fathers twoyearold daughter remain missing, but hope of minding anyone else alive is gone. Officials announced the search and rescue effort is over. Also highway 101 remains closed in the area with no estimate of when it will reopen. Oakland mayor libby schaaf issues a statement in response to a protest saturday night outside of her home. Activists stayed there until late in the evening to draw attention to homelessness. The mayor was not there at the time of the protest. In her Statement Released yesterday she said the city leaders are working each and every day to create new housing for homeless and fighting homeless. Volunteers helping set up a temporary Homeless Center downtown told us more needs to be done. We see ourselves as like a temporary a temporary solution to this crisis and the only solution to this crisis is permanent housing that everybody can afford. One Council Member at the event told us the city is looking at models set up in other cities. They want to find a workable solution to improve the homeless crisis. Happening today, parents will join tobacco opponents in San Francisco to pressure leaders to reject tobacco lobbyists. Organizers are defending political groups refuse money from Tobacco Companies seeking to overturn San Franciscos new ban on flavored tobacco. Supervisors passed that ban last june. Organizers say big tobacco is funding a campaign to overturn that ban with a june ballot measure. The surf contest isnt going to happen this week. The World Surf League called off the competition this weekend after closely monitoring the conditions. Organizers were eyeing today and tomorrow to call the popular surf event at halfmoon bay. Last year surfers did not get a chance to compete because the organizers declared bankruptcy. The home is to get those right conditions before the organizers window closes on february 28th. Today americans honored dr. Martin luther king jr. , a civil rights leader whose relentless fight for justice changed america forever. In 1983 president Ronald Reagan signed legislation designating every third monday in january as Martin Luther king jr. Day. Dr. King spent much of his life fighting for equality for africanamericans and other minorities. He was assassinated on april 4th, 1968. Theyre making a come back, the Company Plans to relaunch online next month with stores on the horizon. The site will include high tech features such as augmented reality and tech support through video chat. The ceo announced this at the Consumer Electronics show, that circuit city will launch its website on february 15th, a month from today. Once the bankruptcy retailer also has plans to open kiosk Stores Within other stores and eventually its own showroom. The company tried to operate online after closing its doors in 2009 but that venture folded in 2012. General motors says that its making the first mass produced selfdriving car. The company says that it has filed a petition with the federal government seeking permission to put the cars on the roads sometime next year. Day everyone lots of events welcome back to today in the bay on this monday morning, Martin Luther king jr. Holiday. Lots of events happening across the bay area to celebrate the iconic civil rights leader so get a chance to get out there and participate. Lovely look outside this morning as well. It is a nice day to get out and maybe do some things. That fog has plagued the bay area over the weekend and there were some parts of the delta and Central Valley that didnt get out of the low 50s over the weekend. While we did get a little bit more sunshine in the bay area. We are going to have another spare the air day because of the unhealthy air quality, especially in the north bay, as well as the inland east bay. Moderate air quality for the bay and the coast south bay, also moderate air quality. Now we start out with temperatures in the upper 40s as we head out the door in san jose and the sevenday forecast is up at the bottom of the screen so you can come on over and check that out. Its now 45 degrees in oakland and palo alto and 44 degrees in santa rosa. A look at our high temperatures today, in the upper 50s for San Francisco, halfmoon bay, napa 58 degrees and 60 degrees today in livermore, 62 in san jose. As we get a live look outside youre getting dressed this morning and we are going to have a day where you do have to dress this layers once again because it is a chilly start so you do need a hat and also a jacket, but i think you will probably keep that on all day long. Now, weve also been monitoring whats happening along the coast with a lot of people being off today, you may want to head to the beach and those milder temperatures, but heads up about the dangerous surf we will have until 4 00 tomorrow afternoon. There may be some long period swells and also some strong rip currents. You do have to make sure you are always paying attention to the water, never turn your back to the beach. As we get a look at whats going to happen over the next couple of days, we have three storm systems on the way and right now the first one moving in there arrive with some rain later on tonight and then there will be a few more later on this week. This first round of rain will be here during the overnight hours moving into the north bay right around midnight and continuing to move into San Francisco, its going to be a quick one and done. Then its going to be dry until thursday when we will have another round of some heavier rain moving in that will continue into the day on friday. Your weekend for the most part is looking dry until late sunday afternoon and a much more significant storm system is set to move in. So we have three storm systems on the way this week and plenty of rain in that forecast. Looking at the days it will be dry, today, wednesday and also on saturday. In between we will have those showers moving through and temperatures cooling off as well, inland areas will go from the low 60s today to the upper 50s and even some mid 50s for the inland valleys by the end of the week. We will talk more about this and events going on today around the bay area. Thats coming up. New this morning, talks continue overnight between north and south korea. Lower level officials met early in morning. Todays meeting specifically focused on north koreas plan to send archers to the south during the winter olympics. There will be more talks about the athletes who will participate in the games. A boeing 737 dangling off a cliff in northern turkey. Happened yesterday when the plane was landed but it skidded off the runway and almost into the ocean. One of its engines did fall into the water and luckily everyone on board was able to get out. Some people actually suffered some minor injuries, however. The crash is under investigation, but the airport says it appears to be pilot error. Now to south america, people in peru are assessing the damage from sundays strong earthquake that shook the countrys southern coast. That 7. 1 quake struck before dawn. Take a look, you can see the camera moving. Felt some 300 miles away. The area it struck is not heavily populated but still dozens of homes have been destroyed. The earthquake cracked roads and left other highways blocked by boulders. There are reports of two deaths and dozens of injuries. All 32 people on board an Iranian Oil Tanker are all believed to be lost at sea. That tanker ship met a fiery end to the east in the East China Sea a week ago that collided with a chinese freighter. Now the iranian vessel burned for days, finally sinking into the ocean yesterday. The 21 crew members on that chinese ship were all reported safe. Its still not clear what caused the crash between the ships. 4 49 right now. Emergency room visits for alcoholrelated illness are on the rise, thats according to new data from more than 900 hospitals in 33 states. There were 61 more hospitalizations from drinking in 2014 compared to 2006. The increase was significant among women. Recent studies have shown women are catching up to men in overall alcohol use and binge drinking. And teens who are severely bulled yeel as children face a higher risk of Mental Health problems, thats according to new research out of canada. That study followed over 1,300 children until the age of 15. Victims of severe bullying were twice as likely to suffer from depression and three times more likely to have anxiety than their peers. But most troubling, bullied teens were three and a half more times likely to have suicidal thoughts or actions. Jotting down your todo list before toug bed could help you sleep better. Research found people who wrote down future tasks fell asleep nine minutes faster than those who wrote about what they had already done. Longer more specific todo lists were even more effective.
