For minor injuries there. Lets check in with anser hassan. Hes been following this story since it broke. For quite some time, it shut down traffic on i880 in hayward. This just tragic news on christmas. Reporter thats right, laura. Especially having to notify the wife on Christmas Morning. What weve learned, as you reported, the man killed in last nights accident was this man. As you mentioned he just joined the chp force one year and four months ago. He was just 33 years old. He grew up in tracy. He leaves behind a wife and three young children. His partner, jonathan well as kwez the officers were parked on the shoulder of southbound 880 in hayward. They were looking for impaired drivers as part of chps maximum enforcement period and thats when they were hit behind by a driver who slammed into the back of their patrol car. Chp says the driver was driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and that he was speeding. They say that driver was a 22yearold man who was coming home to hayward from a party. Now, chp assistant chief Ernie Sanchez says hes angry, not just for losing one of his officers but for what he called a senseless tragedy due to someone driving drunk. Today hes left behind three children, a wife, brothers and sisters. Children that were expecting their father to come home and help open christmas presents. But instead, he chose to work today, work in the community in hayward, and while on patrol on the 880 stopped on the right shoulder, him and his partner, officer Jonathan Velasquez were hit a person who chose to be irresponsible. And today im not only disappointed but also angered in that i had to notify a mother and three children that their father had deceased at a local hospital after being impacted by an individual who chose to drive irresponsibly. And that is the message today on Christmas Day. Reporter now, assistant chief sanchez also described him as a man of courage, integrity and with the desire to serve. This is not fog, this is just suspended particles, pollution and smoke thats been trapped here in the bay area. We can see that in the south bay. It is unhealthy to be outside for children and the elderly or anyone with breathing problems. Not only in the south bay but the north bay as well. Air quality is moderate in the east bay and peninsula. Do not burn wood at this point. Its all going to make the air quality a lot worse. And our temperatures right now in the mid50s. Were going to see it warming up a couple of more degrees from here into the upper 50s for the south bay, 55 in oakland, 58 in napa and 56 degrees in San Francisco. Reporter the story begins in the fields and orchards of hollister where last winter people began spotting a stray dog. The hollister animal lost and found Facebook Page was quickly on the case. They learned the dog had escaped from a new home just two days after being adopted and clearly had no interest in going back. She was in what we call fight or flight mode. Reporter deanna barth and her experienced rescue team tried and tried and failed for two months to catch the dog. Ive done Animal Rescue for years, but all of the typical things like cage traps and baiting with smelly food and all of those things was not working, so the only way to get to earn her trust was to get someone she might remember. Reporter which is where megan comes in. You see, megan and her mom foster and train rescue dogs in their morgan hill home. 75 in just the past year alone. Weve done some therapy dogs and weve trained some obedience dogs. She has retrained several puppies. One of those dogs was daisy, the hollister stray. And though only in the toppings home for a few weeks. Her bond with megan was uncanny. Reporter which is why in late December Megan and karen drove to hollister to see what they could do and saw daisy sitting in a field. Karen started shooting video and wasnt the one who told megan what to do next. Megan says that was daisy. She told me, because you can talk to dogs in your brain, and she told me if mom stayed in the truck shell come to me. And i believed it. Reporter so out megan went. Laid down right in the middle of the field and waited. I didnt have a plan, i just started doing. And i used all my experience with the dogs. Reporter daisy was cautious at first, but then this dog, who had run from every wellmeaning adult looking to help her, finally surrounded to the charms of a 6yearold dog whisperer. Reporter megan and daisy have had fun catching up since then, but wont be staying together. The toppings want to keep rescuing other dogs so they found a great new home for daisy. Aquatic park San Francisco has been in the news lately after some aggressive sea lions forced the city to ban swimming there. The past winter, the park was the scene of something not lifethreatening but lifesaving. Today in the bays Garvin Thomas has the story, a rescue and reunion. Reporter in this unforgettable city, it is an uncomfortable fact of life, to get through even the simplest of days, one must regularly turn a blind eye to people in crisis. I dont think you saw him, but i definitely saw. Reporter this tale, though, is about three people, very young ones at that, who didnt turn away and one man who is forever grateful. You start questioning or wondering if they saved my life. Fishermen were around back over here. Reporter Kevin Shanahan is a longtime member of San Franciscos legendary golf and swim club. On february 21st, like so many hundreds of times before, kevin went for a swim in aquatic park. This past crazy winter, though, has played havoc with the bays tides and currents and kevin soon realized he was no match for the sea that day and was being swept away. My only recourse was, i need to catch i need to grab a piling because im going under the pier. Reporter kevin grabbed on and yelled for help, unsure if anyone could hear him over the wind and the waves. Reporter but this 9yearold aaron alvera did. I couldnt quite make out what he was saying because we were a little far away. Reporter fishing for crabs that day with his older brother and his girlfriend, the three didnt rely on someone else to do something, they sprang into action. Lowering a rope to kevin, calling 911 and waiting. From the top of the pier, however, they couldnt see kevin below and had no idea hypothermia had begun to set in. This is it. This is the day. And im kind of accepting the fact that im going to die today. Reporter a Police Rescue boat, though, sooned appeared and kevin was pulled out of the water. The two things he wanted more than anything, to get warm are you aaron . Reporter and to thank those brave kids. You saved my life. Thank you very much. My names kevin. Christmas morning has arrived and santa is back in the well, Christmas Morning has arrived and santa back in the north pole after delivering all of those presents. Can you imagine how tired he must be . Very. We want to show you some video showing santa when he actually arrived in the bay area. Norad has detected santa arriving in San Francisco as his sleigh flew buy the Golden Gate Bridge. Video from norad, the north American Aerospace defense command, they track santas journey every year and released this footage of santa flying over the Golden Gate Bridge and across the San Francisco skyline. Accord they even tried to roid in the cable cars when theyre theyre, thinking of new ideas for toys every year. San francisco was the last stop on santas trips across the continental u. S. Every single year. Wow. Pretty cool. Yeah. And today if youve got a bike or anything, its a great day to go out there. I got a new bike for christmas. Go ride it. A lot of the kids are testing out their toys, including us big kids out there enjoying the slightly milder temperatures that we have. Right now, its 53 degrees, looking live in ocean beach. I see quiet a few people out there on the beach, taking pictures and enjoying their day off. Now as we take a look at all of the haze that has settled into the south bay, looking live in san jose, it is kind of makes it unhealthy to be out there. So we do have some unhealthy air quality. Its a spare the air alert day and we have some moderate air quality for the east bay as well as the peninsula. No wood burning. That just makes things worse. Everythings being trapped as the air is actually sinking due to High Pressure. And our temperatures now in the low to mid50s. Still kind of cool, but i think a light jacket or long sleeving wit do it, that will make it feel a lot more comfortable until we make it up to 60 degrees in san jose. 6 is in morgan hill and los gatos today. As we go through the rest of the day, lets check our trend for los gatos, up to the low 60s there and our normal High Temperature is 57 degrees. Over the next few days, its going to be even warmer. If youre going to the sierra or have some family already there, youre going to go join them, this is a look outside at kirkwood and the ski resorts are open enjoying the snow on the ground, but some fairly dry weather over the past several days. High pressure still going to be across the region and thats whats kept those storm systems to the north of us. It causes the air to sink and the air circulation around that High Pressure is clockwise. So we will have more of an onshore flow over the next few days. Keeping it mild and it may not be until the first of the year when we finally get some rain in this forecast. Our temperatures in San Francisco stay in the mid50s for our highs and morning temperatures in the mid40s, which is about normal. Well be up to 60 degrees, slightly milder for the weekend. As you make plans for new years eve. As of now, it looks pretty good. Our temperatures reaching into the upper 60s for the inland area by saturday and sunday, 64 degrees.
