Mayor lee died unexpectedly of a heart attack early tuesday morning. A public viewing will begin in about two hours at city hall. Thats where we find today in the bays, pete suratos, with the event taking place. People can really pay their respects. Good morning, pete. Reporter good morning to you, marcus and laura. Yes, today, this morning and throughout the day will be the first chance for folks to pay their respects to mayor lee as his body is returned here to the city. I want to show you whats taking place right now. We are moved off the street. We have San Francisco fire setting up in front of city hall, not far from the growing memorial that we seen on the city hall steps over the past few days. San francisco fire is eventually going to put up a flag when that memorial or public viewing begins in a couple hours at 8 00 a. M. Lets give you a quick rundown for folks going to the city. The mayors motorcade will arrive by the end of this hour or around 7 00 a. M. , thats what we are told. An honor guard is going to carry the coffin inside city hall. From there, the doors are going to open at 8 00 p. M. To the public. It will be in the area from 8 00 a. M. To 7 00 p. M. We got a chance to speak to important Public Officials in San Francisco, including acting mayor of San Francisco london breed including the police chief. He spoke of the impact and the turnout you can expect to see. The fact that so many people are expected to come shows how much people appreciate him. My family met him extensively. He welcomed us to the city when we first got here. Reporter mayor ed lee was the first asianamerican mayor in San Francisco history. He died of a heart attack on tuesday. The medical examiner hasnt confirmed that information, but we know mayor lee is survived by his wife and two children. Well take you back out here live. Mercury news reporting the agency that operates Mount Umunhum granted rights to a native american tribe. It gives them permanent rights to 36 acres once ok pied by the air force. This is the first of its kind, giving native americans a voice. They say the agency is limiting public use of that area. In washington, d. C. , this morning, a race to beat the clock on tax reform. Republicans hammered out a plan, but they are really counting votes, not sure everyone in their own party is on board. Tracie potts is live in washington with who could throw a wrench in the plans. In two weeks, Recreational Marijuana will become legal in california. Theres a flurry of activity to get licensed when the date comes. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live in the news room this morning. Hi, marcus. 200 businesses applied for the licenses to sell Recreational Marijuana starting on new years day. Nearly half of those licenses came to businesses here in the bay area. The bureau cannabis control issued the first 20 licenses so far for all of california and buddys cannabis of san jose got two licenses for medicinal and adult use. Kind people of santa cruz got six licenses. Theirs are permitted for adult use, also for distribution. Herbal inc of santa rosa got a license for a medicinal distributor. They are temporary, only good for 120 days, then apply for a permanent one. The state launched the online licensing system last week. In that time, 1900 users registered with the bureau of cannabis control, the first step toward licensing. 200 applicants submitted documentation. Its a difficult process. They had to submit business plans, financial information, labor agreements and detail how they transport inventory to marijuana as well as well as the plans for Quality Control and for a lot of folks, security. Only 20 licenses were issued initially, the head of cannabis control says the plan is to issue more licenses before january 1st. This is coming down to the wire. Its now a red flag warning that goes into effect from 10 00 tonight until 10 00 sunday morning for elevations above 1,000 feet in the santa cruz mountains, not far from us here in los gatos. The east bay, north bay hills and diablo range. The low humidity and northerly winds of 1530 Miles Per Hour with gusts of 5060 miles an hour, National Weather service is recommending you not burn anything outside. This is video of the bear fire that burned 390 acres in the santa cruz mountains. Firefighters had it contained, midoctober. A couple nights ago, we are talking two months later, it flaired back up. It was put out. It burned up to an acre. Cal fire was able to contain that. That demonstrates how dry these conditions are, here in december. Again, days away from christmas, facing the fire danger. You dont need to remind people in southern california, the thomas fire in Ventura County is still burning. It scorched 250,000 acres. That is now the fourth largest fire in state history. It happened in brooklyn yesterday morning. It was caught on cell phone video. The man was unconscious on the track bed. Commuters tried to get his attention. One woman ran down the tracks and asked others to stop an approaching train. Worried the train was coming over him, you know, it was right there. It was going to be bad. Horrible. Something could happen. The woman ran to an emergency call box and others yelled to the trains engineer. Eventually, it came together and the train stopped. A group of Good Samaritans climbed down and brought him up to the platform. Its unclear why he was on the tracks. He was hospitalized in severe condition. The senate will vote on tax cuts.
