This morning, conflicting reports about what those troops were doing in the area where they were ambushed as one of them lass wade to rest on saturday. Hans nichols has the latest. Hans, good morning. Good morning, willie. As the families continue to mourn, congress is preparing to ask them hard questions next week not only about this specific mission but about the overall strategy thats putting american troops lives at risk in africa. Army sargeant la David Johnson was laid to rest saturday near his home in florida. His pregnant widow kissing his casket as she held an american flag. Johnson was killed in an ambush in niger earlier this month along with three of his comrades. His body found one mile from the ambush site 48 hours after the deadly attack and the initial chaotic hours there was hope he was still alive with his beacon emitting a signal until it grew faint. This morning new and conflicting accounts of what happened during the deadly mission. The New York Times reports that some nigerian Officials Say the army convoy of nigerian and u. S. Soldiers spotted and chased insurgents until they crossed into neighboring mali but the times adds that the american soldiers did not mention giving chase and they claimed they were ambushed and surrounded by insurgents possibly tipped off by tribal leaders who they were meeting. The impact is we have to do a better job coordinating and sharing assets because the african continent is large. There are 800 military personnel in niger. Most are building a drone base which will serve as the hub of a drone network. Hans nichols getting us started in washington. Thank you very much. President trump and the white house have been on the defensive all week amid questions about the president s condolence call of the family of sargeant johnson. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is at the white house and the president s decision to open up the Jfk Assassination files. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie. So much attention this week on how the president reaches out to military families after they have received the worst of all possible news. Its attention the president has in large part brought on himself because of how he describes how many families that he reaches and what he does in making those contacts and its the president s description thats being challenged. The condolence controversy turned up when President Trump said this. If you look at president obama and other president s, most of them didnt make calls. A lot of them didnt make calls. I like to call when its appropriate. Reporter during a series of radio interviews the president went further. For the most part to the best of my knowledge, i think ive called every family of somebody thats died. Reporter but a report from roll call said the white house had to quickly scramble to get updated names and numbers from the pentagon so the president could contact additional loved ones. The Associated Press says of 20 families, it contacted half had not received a message. The white house says President Trump has reached all those presented to him through a military protocol. You cant just call immediately, but i will be calling. Reporter turning to a different president ial power that could put to rest decades old questions around an american tragedy. Saturday President Trump tweeted that he would be allowing classified jfk files to be open. Im hoping were going to learn a lot more about what the cia knew about Lee Harvey Oswald before the assassination. Reporter back in 1992 congress ordered that secret kennedy investigation files be revealed within 25 years. After the oliver stone movie jfk ignited public pressure around conspiracy theories. Lieutenant colonel testifies that oswald was given a russian training. Reporter candidate trump peddled a wild theory. His father was with Lee Harvey Oswald prior to oswald being, you know, shot. Reporter the 1992 law requires the National Archives release thousands of documents by this thursday unless the president objects. Now an agency like the cia could ask the president to withhold certain documents if they make a claim about National Security or spies that may be living. The president using twitter again this morning bringing our attention back to the controversy with the Florida Democratic congresswoman fredricka wilson. The president tweeting a short time ago, again, attacking the congresswoman whos a friend of the johnson family, the sargeant who was killed in my gear. Whacky congresswoman wilson is the gift that keeps on giving for the Republican Party, a disaster for dems. You watch her in action and vote republican. So the president again choosing not to let that go nearly a week into this controversy. Willie . Kelly odonnell at the white house. Thank you. Chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Press. Good morning. Good morning. Yesterday of course was the funeral of David Johnson. Myesha johnson put her husband into the ground and were back into this political fight going after congresswoman fredricka wilson. Not a lot of people bathe themselves in glory beyond those four brave men and their families. What did we witness and what are we continuing to witness . I think were witnessing the continued destruction and erosion of our political discourse. I dont think it was a coincidence that on thursday former president s bush and obama both came out to indict President Trumps brand of civil discourse essentially. I mean, thats probably as good of a way to describe what they did. Yes, they both didnt mention him by name and so the white house is taking that taking some comfort in that, but you throw all that together and i dont think its a coincidence. I think they were responding to the latest like oh, now were now weve polarized condolences . There is no bottom to how low our dehumanization of politics and civility can go, and i think its look, this was a shameful week in american politics. I agree. Theres no other way to put it. I totally agree. John mccain and joe biden together, you can throw those speeches in as well. The old guard of american politics trying to pull back what they believe theyre seeing lost right now and to reaffirm what america is supposed to stand for. At the same time, you have steve bannon right. Who was Donald Trumps of course former Senior Advisor going after president george w. Bush and saying hes the reason were here in the first place. Which brand of the Republican Party wins out in the end, chuck . You know, its interesting. If you look at the people, we actually have an interesting little analysis this morning on meet the press. If you look at the Republican Voters and you look at the places donald trump did well and did better than a mitt romney did, for instance, or you look at the places mitt romney did better than a donald trump, and heres what you find out, willie. There are more people who were fired up about Donald Trumps brand of politics, so that really is the steve bannon brand of politics, than they are the george w. Bush the establishment wings politics. The fact is Steve Bannons right about this. Paul ryan and Mitch Mcconnell are out of touch with that grassroots that got donald trump the nomination. They are on completely the same page different pages. I think we are already at the point where its too separate political parties, they ham to be happen to be operating as one. We need to throw in a relitigation of the Jfk Assassination. Right. Wow, there are a lot of people for transparency but some of his own intelligence agencies asked him not to. C is he doing it . I applaud him doing it to be frank here. I confess to being a longtime, shall we say, studier of the jfk conspiracy over time. Not a big fan of the oliver stone movie because i think he didnt do justice to that movement at all, but the fact of the matter is the cia has never wanted to say how much it knew about Lee Harvey Oswalds movements, and apparently thats what theyre nervous about. Theyre nervous about their reputation. We still have three or four more days that the president can stop this, but thursdays the day. We shall see if we finally find out what the cia knew about Lee Harvey Oswald and when they knew it. Another chapter in this story. Chuck todd, thank you as always. Chuck will have more when hes joined by Chuck Schumer and republican senator lindsey graham. Some other headlines this morning, boh bergdahl is speaking out. Tomorrow he faces a possible life sentence. Nbcs lucy cathanaw has more. It is very unnerving to be a prisoner. This traded, this dirty, rotten traitor reporter candidate donald trump berated bergdahl. 25, 30, 50 years ago what would they have done, bing, right . Whats in your wallet . All right. Dylan and i ready to whip through the highs and the lows of the week. Our first high goes to our favorite little guy of the week. 4yearold bryce wilson and he is a bona fide internet star. His mother was in the hospital getting ready to deliver a baby. Bryce didnt like the idea of his mom being in the hospital even if for such a happy occasion. He pleaded with her to pull through as if she were on her death bed because he needs her. We need you. Because we need our mama. We need you. We need you to stay alive and we dont want nothing to happen to you. Its not. Thats why im here. If im here in the hospital so they can take out your sister. Bryces mom did deliver a little girl and is back home safely where she is needed. He needs that sister, too. Very cute. Our first logos to that feeling when you have to accept that you are just not cia material. Lulu the black lab became something of a celebrity this week when the cia put out a long series of tweets announcing she was a very good dog but wasnt going to cut it as an explosive detective canine mainly because she wasnt interested. Lu lu clearly wasnt enjoying herself so her handlers stopped her training. The spy agency did post a photo of lulu in her new home. I love that she rolled her eyes. Not going to happen. Look at the life shes living now. She has it figured out. Our next eye goes to the arrival at long last at flying cars. Flying motor bikes anyway. Baby steps. Police in dubai introduced a fleet of hover bikes. Dubai in the oil rich United Arab Emirates is already known for its fleet of Luxury Police cars now taking things to the next level. The bikes are called hover surf scorpions. They travel more than 40 miles an hour. Have a charge of 25 minutes. The idea is theyll be able to fly over traffic to respond to emergencies. We hope you join us. Right now, back to sunday today with willie geist. The legacy continues. Dale earnhardt jr. Wins the 46th daytona 500. That is Dale Earnhardt jr. In 2004 with the first of two wins at the daytona 500. The name earnhardt is synonymous with nascar. Dale earnhardt jr. Is a Third Generation stock car racer, and for 14 consecutive years hes been voted nascars most popular driver. Its been more than 16 years since his legendary father died during a race with junior watching the wreck in his Rearview Mirror. The eyes and the pressure of the racing world immediately turned towards junior and the crossover superstar has more than lived up to the family name. Now he has just a handful of races left before he retires next month. Earnhardt and i got together for a sunday sitdown with cars zooming past us at talladega, alabama. First, he took me for a little sunday drive. So ive never been with a real driver on a track like this. Really . Going to go easy on me . Yeah, i mean, its a street car. Youll be fine. Rrl Dale Earnhardt jr. Is right at home behind the wheel of a fast car racing around an oval and hugging the wall on a banked turn at 180 miles an hour. His passenger, on the other hand, is holding on for dear life. Ahhhhh oh, my god. Whew i think i got the feel for it. You think so . Thats the fast it will go. Thats probably the fastest ive been in a street car ever. Now you want to try . No. Im going to leave it to the professionals. Thank you, man. Junior, as hes known to fans, began his racing career as a teenager. He graduated quickly to nascars highest level where he has won 26 times, including twice at the storied daytona 500. How do you describe the feeling in the cockpit of a race . You feel a lot of g forces and, you know, pushing you down in the car and the car being shoved into the corner. You have a spotter up on top of the grandstand whos telling you where those guys are around you. I always tell my spotter to sort of paint the picture so i dont have to look in the mirror. Do you still experience fear when you get into a race . Yeah, of course. Theres fear of failure mostly. Theres not a fear of danger. Ive been in races where i have had fear of danger and fear of accident or crash or injury, and i dont take the risks necessary to win, and thats when youve got to get out. Earnhardt is walking away from the racetrack partly because a careers worth of concussions have planted some of that doubt in his mind. Hard into the wall. After a concussion in michigan last year, he sat out the second half of the season. In april he announced his retirement at the end of this season. Having that experience and the history of concussions and knowing what we went through to get well, i know i cant do this for five, ten years with that in the back of my mind. I know i cant and i dont want to. I wanted to selfishly retire on my terms, and so this year ive been able to make sure that, you know, im getting it all owl of my system. Earnhardt was born in North Carolina the son of a racing god. Dale earnhardt sr. Was a maverick in stock car racing driving the black number 3 chevy with swagger. They called him the intimidator. He just was everybodys hero, you know . And it didnt take him long when he would meet a new person that he would have that impact on them. He just people loved him. When he walked in a room, it changed. In 2001, as father and son whipped around the final lap at the daytona 500, tragedy struck. Big trouble. Big wreck behind them. Did you see this one in your Rearview Mirror . Yeah, i was watching them. I was looking in the mirror watching the crash. You thought, another wreck for dad. Another wreng, dang, that sucks. Never really thinking about him being in danger physically. I came around actually and saw all the people working on him and trying to get him out of the car, and that was like, oh, this is unusual. I immediately went right out of the Infield Care Center and jumped in the car to go to the hospital because thats where they were going to take him directly. And thats where you found out, at the hospital . Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Everybody anybody that was in the industry, we were crammed into this one room. Just everybody was upset. Everybody sobbing and not knowing nobody knew what to say or do. I was just like, yeah, lets get out of here. We left and went back to the track. We sat in that bus for a while and, you know, just like what do you do . Shock and sadness at the death on the final lap of nascar superstar Dale Earnhardt in daytona yesterday. I hated that i lost him and i hate that he cant be around to know my wife and she wants to know him so badly because he was this really special, special person. Junior suddenly was the heir to his dads giant legacy. He drove fast and lived fast, too. It was about me. I was really just partying, you know, running wild and having fun with my friends. That began to change nearly a decade ago when an interior decorator arrived to work on a home junior was building. Her name is amy. Last new years eve the two were married. A lot of people who know you say, juniors a different guy since he met amy. Do you think thats true . Yeah, absolutely. And its i didnt just change immediately. It took a while. I didnt know what being in a relationship was or how to be respectable and treat a woman the way they need to be treated. Shes made me smarter, kinder, more thoughtful person, not just for her. Like for everyone. Earnhardt announced this week that amy is pregnant with the couples first child. A little girl. As his racing career winds down, earnhardt continues to raise his voice in National Political debates. Like his father before him, junior long has been opposed to the confederate flag. Hes posted messages about charlottesville and more recently in support of the right of nfl players to neil during the national anthem. I think a lot of people would say those positions run counter to a bunch of the people who come out and cheer for you on sunday afternoons. For the longest time nascars been sort of stereotyped. We all have different opinions and thoughts and cares and likes and dislikes. If nascar starts to become part of the conversation, then ive got to go, hey, im in nascar, heres where i stand. It gives me piece of mind knowing how i feel. I dont like people to assume im over here or over here or thinking this and that when im not. So whats next for junior . Hell still be at the racetrack on sundays, just up in the tv booth as an analyst for nbc sports. Youre going to be honest . Are you going to tell the truth of all of these guys . Yeah. I got the opportunity last year to do a couple of races. I knew i would like it. I left the booth each time just so elated like how fun it was. I had no idea that i would enjoy it as much as i did. So, i mean, its like hanging out with your buddies. Is there any chance this is a Michael Jordan retirement where you go away for a little bit and come back . I dont think so. I dont think so. The travel and being away from my family and my wife. I want to experience raising a child and, you know, just be normal. Got to love the sound track with the cars racing behind us through the interview. After our little trip around the oval at talladega, earnhardt qualified first and took the pole position for last sundays race where he finished 7th in the number 88 chevrolet. Junior now has just five races left in his story book career including today when the championship continues at kansas. All you earnhardt fans will be interested to hear which of his 26 career wins was the sweetest. You might be surprised by the answer. Check out web extras at today. Co today. Com weekday.
