The widespread pregame demonstrations by nfl players in defiance of President Trump after he said players who dont stand during the National Anthem should be fired. Today, National Correspondent craig melvin has more on this story. Reporter good morning. It was about at l a lot more than football at stadiums like this all over the nfl. Some have suggested that part of this is about race. The president going after a league filled with africanamericans. The president pushing back on that assertion to a group of reporters, insisting this is nothing to do with race. Ive never talked about race. Nonetheless, his criticisms fueling protests from players, coaches and some owners. What so proudly in football stadiums throughout the country and even overseas, more than 100 nfl players knelt in defiance, after President Trump speaks out against the league, tweeting multiple times, demanding team owners punish players who protest the National Anthem. We have great people representing our country. Especially the soldiers, First Responders. And they should be treated with respect. Mr. Trump doubling down after taking aim at players after free agent Colin Kaepernick started protesting the anthem last year to bring attention to rochelle racial and racial inequality. Wouldnt you want to see one of the nfl owners, when someone disrespects our flag, to say get that guy out right now. Hes fired. Hes fired [ cheers ] reporter but the comments set off a firestorm of resistance. All day sunday, players took a knee. Sat down, raised fists. Some teams chose to stay in the locker room during the ceremony. Others locked arms in solidarity with each other, including patriots quarterback tom brady. A friend of mr. Trump. The comments have sparked backlash from highprofile supporters. Im pissed off, ill be honest with you. Including former Buffalo Bills coach, rex ryan. Im reading the comments. And its appalling to me. Reporter owners of several teams issued statements opposing the president , including new England Patriots owner, robert kraft, a campaign donor. Saying he was deeply disappointed by the tone of the president s comments, add, i support the players right to effect social change and raise awareness in a manner they feel is most impactful. While some fans are agreeing with the protest of the anthem. Others believe its disrespectful. I think it should be done somewhere other than a football stadium. When Pittsburgh Steelers stayed in the locker room, alejandro villanueva, chose to stand on the edge of the field, hand over heart. The president also took aim at nba superstar and vocal critic steph curry. Withdrawing an invitation to the white house after he said curry hesitated whether to attend the white house for a ceremony for the golden state warriors. Hitting back, lebron james, said hes a bum, adding, steph curry already said he aint going, therefore, aint no invite. Hes now using sports as the platform to try to divide us. Its something i cant stand for. Reporter it would seem that the protests are starting to spread to other sports. A Major League Baseball took a knee. And theyre spreading to the stage. A number of artists protested on saturday. It was Stevie Wonder at the global citizens festival who took not one but two knees. In charlottesville, pharrell at a music festival. This is the third version of the president s travel ban. This one more farreaching and adds three Foreign Countries to those blocked. Its metropolitan to be tough and target meant to be tough and targeted, but critics argue, its unconstitutional. Just hours before it was set to expire, President Trump updating his travel ban on sunday, expanding it to include visitors from eight countries. The president posting a proclamation on twitter. Making america is my numberone priority. We will not admit those into our country we cannot safely vet. The new order adds restrictions on travelers and immigrants from north korea, chad and venezuela. It locks all travel on visas. It keeps restrictions on five of the six muslim countries in the original ban iran, libya, somalia, syria, and yemen. The move drops restrictions on visitors from sudan because Officials Say it is cooperating with monitoring security and sharing information with the u. S. Government. Some critics say the new measures harken back to the early days of the campaign. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States. As the push to overhaul obamacare may have opposition again. Reporter the push for repealing obamacare may be in Critical Condition condition. The republicans have been saying for seven years, repeal and replace. And now, they have a chance. Reporter and striking a note of optimism. Eventually, we will win. If its now or later. Police say that they have now recovered four weapons. Two pistols from inside the church here and a pistol and rifle from the alleged gunmans car parked right over there. Why did you do it . Reporter overnight, the accused Church Shooter in handcuffs and taken to jail. Police say Emanuel Sampson opened fire in this church. A levelone mass casualty incident. People were running and hiding. Reporter inside, witnesses say the masked gunman never said a word. He was just shooting. Reporter this parishioner rushed to help the wounded. I grabbed her shirt and started to put pressure on her. Reporter before the gunman shot six people inside the church, Authorities Say he fatally shot 39yearold Melanie Smith in the parking lot. When i said goodbye to her, i didnt know that was the last time. I know shes waiting for us. Reporter police say it could have been much worse, if another for if heroism of robert caleb engle. A lot of people wondering where this storm is headed. We turn to al. Guys, thanks. Weve been talking at maria since september 16th. Now its still a category1 storm, weakening a about the as it moves to the waters of the atlantic. 80mileperhour winds. Its moving to the north at seven miles per hour. Now the track of the storm and the tropicalforce winds extend 200 miles outside of the center. As it makes its way Tuesday Morning to wednesday afternoon almost parallel to the coast, the Tropical Force Winds are right along the coast. We have Tropical Storm warnings from Kill Devil Hills down to moorhead city. What kind of winds can we see . We are looking at winds that can gust from 35 to 60 miles per hour, especially around the outer banks, causing big problems. The strongest win winds, tuesday afternoon into wednesday. The surge, two to four feet, causing inundation along the outer banks, washed out streets and highways. And the surf will be a big problem, too. Up to 15 to 20foot waves causing rip currents, major beach erosion and damage to marine marinas and piers. A jog either way can affect the coastline, if it goes 15, 20, 30 miles to the west, much stronger on the coast. Maybe, hopefully, it goes east. Were talking about a lot less. The next 24 hours, pretty telling on this one . Absolutely. New problems in puerto rico tied to marias devastation. A dam that was damaged by the heavy rains is now in danger of failing. The confirmed deaths have been 29 throughout the caribbean, 13 here in puerto rico. Those numbers likely to rise. An urgent need right now is power and phone service. That is hampering recovery efforts. A Communications Breakdown. This morning from jawdropping lines at gas stations to heartbreaking rescues in isolated mountain towns, puerto rico is an island in crisis. Everything is find. Everything is gone. Reporter a community completely cut off when Hurricane Maria washed this bridge away. We saw families wading through Rushing Water to escape. Holding on to a dead power able as a lifeline. Theyre anxious to get across. This woman tells us everything on the other side is devastated. We rode along with fema search and rescue team from south florida as it made its way to the central part of the island. Greg has worked hurricanes harvey, irma and now maria. This is a disaster on many parts of the island. It is. It is. We just dont know of it because we cant get communications with most people. Reporter in northwest puerto rico, engineers are looking at a major dam after finding a crack. Thankfully so far its holding. While the u. S. Military launches relief efforts, the basic necessities are in short supply. Creativity is not. In san juan, firefighters repurposed floodwaters to put out flames. In a mountain town, residents are collecting river water to drink using pvc pipes. And then there are clusters and clusters and more clusters of people crammed on the side of freeways, trying to find one bar of cell service. Please call this number. Did we see a protest against the president of the United States . The latter two. Free speech and a protest against the president. This was not about the flag. This was not about patriotism. In their opinion, it was about social change. But yesterday, this was a group of our family got attacked. And called names and said they were unpatriotic and said they should be fired for what we feel is demonstrating our First Amendment right. Were going to bow up, band together as a family. And they reacted. You had people that hadnt been involved in this movement, now saying im going to side with my teammates. Its so complecomplex. On the one hand, many people feel the players have a right to protest. And many are offended at the notion of fekneeling during our National Anthem. If you were a coach, what would you advise your players to do . I was a little boy after the mexico city olympics. I talked to my dad, who was a veteran. My dad said, you have a right to sit down, to stand up, to raise a fist. But do what you think is going to make the situation better. What can you hedo to help the situation . What should we do . Just nine days earlier zuckerberg seemed to dismiss the impact of fake news. The idea that fake news on facebook influenced the election in any way i think is a pretty crazy idea. Reporter for now it is not clear how or if the mounting questions could jeopardize how facebook and other social networks operate going forward, but a new spotlight now shining on other Major Tech Companies as well. Suddenly Tech Companies have grown so fast and so furious that its been very tough for them to keep pace with how theyre platforms are being used for good or on occasion like this for ill. Facebooks ad business is massive, making 9. 2 billion in the last three months. And 68 of users say they get news from the platform articles that are really ads. The House Intelligence Committee is also telling me they expect there could be far more than 3,000 ads purchased on facebook in the leadup to the election that were linked to russia. But when others disagrees with them, the brains froze. Turning off to others points of view. We can remember that that persons drain is shutting down. If were saying something positive, looking for Common Ground, if persons brain will light up and let it land. Start with what we have in common and go from there. Reporter the next influencing strategy is effective with teens. Use positive rewards instead of fear. Teenagers dont respond to fearpaced tactics.
