A shelter in place order was lifted after live power lines went down. It happened near collis park elementary school. Lightning struck a palm tree and started a fire. Homeowners say it sounded like a loud explosion. I could almost feel the heat. Smoke everywhere. The family says the tree will likely die. We have Team Coverage of the wild weather this morning. They found from cloudtoground lightning, 1200 strikes over the bay area and within the cloud, thats cloudtocloud lightning, over 7,000 strikes. That really lit up the sky yesterday evening. We are looking at quieter conditions this morning. This is the tweet i sent out yesterday. My son was in the pool and we heard that thunder. Time to get out. That is definitely what you have to do. The saying is, when thunder roars, head indoors. Even when you are in the pool, you have to get out or by a lake or by the water. You wait 30 minutes after the last thunder is heard before you head out there to play or even just watching the kids outside to make sure they are heading in because lightning, especially the cloudtoground is dangerous. This is new video showing dozens of people being rescued in seminole county, florida. That is close to orlando. Here is where the situation stands this morning. It has been two days since irma slammed florida. More than 7. 4 Million People are without power across the southeast this morning. At least 11 people in the u. S. Were killed in that storm. A bright, sunny day in miami, very hot. Recovery efforts are still going on here in florida and will be for several months to come. The need is dire in the florida keys. We are told search and Recovery Efforts are under way. People are unaccounted for. The only way to see damage in parts is by air. As irma churns across the southeast, the damage left behind in florida is staggering. In hard hit naples, to the florida keys we got no power, no water, its a mess. Reporter the storm slamming into the keys as a category 4 hurricane pushing homes off their foundation on to roads, toppling rvs and trailers. Going to take months, maybe years to get this cleaned up. Reporter that is one of the estimated 10,000 in the keys who refused to leave. He wished he would have heeded the warning. Dont stay for another one. Reporter the storm knocked out power to more than 7 Million People, too much for the Largest Energy provider to handle. Its the first storm, by the way, that has impacted all 27,000 square miles in 35 counties we serve across florida. It is a magnitude that we havent seen before. Reporter the Hurricane Force winds leave the path of destruction and flooding from jacksonville to the carolinas. Especially for the keys, its going to be a long road. Theres a lot of damage. I saw the huge fur, told the family and we moved out as fast as we can. They are starting at brush fires, spreading to trees and sometimes buildings. Looking over toward San Francisco, its all nice and quiet, no fog this morning. We are going to see a mix of sun and clouds today. Temperatures reaching 73 degrees. 87 in santa rosa and napa today. The seven day forecast is coming up at the bottom of the screen. We will have cooler temperatures on the way. Its going to be very hot and muggy today. Up to 91 in concord, 85 in san jose and palo alto. This is the way the day is expected to pan out. A mix of sun and clouds, muggy out there. By later tonight, well start to see scattered storms developing. Early tomorrow morning will be the best chance of seeing another round of rain and storms as the cold front moves in from the north, we see this activity firing up and we could be measuring a decent amount of rain, especially for this time of year. We will have the potential of getting a quarter inch of rain in the east bay and San Francisco and some of the valleys measuring the rain as well. We are still tracking whats happening with whats now tropical depression irma spreading across the southeast. Producing a lot of rain and wind with the gusts up to 30 miles an hour. For now, hurricane jose, wind speeds at 75 miles an hour. Well continue to monitor this computer model making it to a loopty loop in the atlantic. This could head to the east coast early next week. Well continue to monitor that. Well watch for the chance of rain early tomorrow in San Francisco. Drier air moving in after that. The cooler day will be on thursday. For the inland areas, up to 79 degrees. Then, starting to heat up by saturday and also on sunday. As we head over to mike tracking two crashes for i80. Overall, folks get a chance to check out the commute itself. North traffic heading over the san mateo bridge. The south bay cleared back to the typical pattern. This is not cleared west 80. A crash blocks two lanes. Many vehicles reported there. The back up extending shy of highway 4. Thats not as bad as it could be because of another crash holding up traffic in the north bay, west 80 shy of 780. Keep that in mind as well. Its a story only on todtod in the bay. Navigation apps are making it almost impossible for home enores to get out of their driveway. Bob redell has a step the city is taking to try to fix the problem. Good morning, bob. Reporter good morning. The problem not only for the city of fremont, but lafayette, cupertino and santa cruz. Super tino has been trying to discourage commuters from cutting on their residential streets by doing things like this behind me here, lighting up the signs that encourage drivers not to use their navigation app. It pushed much of the traffic to other parts of town. Literally, we are hostages in our own home. Reporter residents like steve and iris and the city blame apps like wave and google maps for clogging the neighborhood streets mainly between 3 00 and 7 00 p. M. Take a look at our tv screen. The city shot this drone footage showing a long line of cars going through this small residential street, never meant for regional traffic flows. The city estimates this detour on the traffic on 680 only saves commuters four to five minutes and traps people in their homes for hours. The city of fremont enacted Counter Measures to keep drivers from leaving the freeway in the first place. Traffic engineers, this is the first intersection getting off 680. The city has no turn restrictions at delmar and paseo padre where traffic sometimes comes to a standstill. It was backed up past here and people couldnt get out of the driveway. Hard to leave the house. Traffic is so bad. The longterm solution is creating more housing where the jobs are. Places in cupertino, sunnyvale. They have to provide housing so they no longer have to travel an hour, hour and a half to their homes in central valley. Reporter the city of fremont hopes the waves algorithm will keep drivers on 680. We reached out to wave and google maps. You heard them there. S. W. A. T. Teams used flash bang grenades to enter a kfc restaurant on main street a little before 2 00 this morning. That ended a stand off that started eight hours earlier when police got called about a possible gunshot in the bathroom. They cleared the scene. Back ups were eventually called. Police are not saying whether there was a weapon involved. No one was injured. San Francisco Police are set to talk to people about the use of stun guns. They are drafting a policy to regulate the use. The meeting is from 6 00 to 8 00 at the auditorium. 6 36. A san mateo keown si supervisor is introducing legislature that would ban people from walking while distracted. Yeah, a lot of people do it. If you havent tripped using a cell phone, you know you have seen somebody doing it. Sometimes you get more than a laugh, you can get a serious injury. Thats why a San Mateo County supervisor is going to have them take action to make it a law folks have to look up while they are walking. Nearly 900 pedestrians were killed on california roadways in 2016 alone, which is a 17 increase over ten years ago. Check out these stats that i pulled up from the National Safety counsel, a nonprophet to avoid unintentional deaths. Walking injuries were more than 11,000. 80 of the accidents were falls. Half of them happened at home while most of us do it, 54 of the folks injured are under the age of 40. Definitely something to talk with your kids about on the way to school today. The mayor of honolulu enacted a law banning distracted walking in his city. He hopes common sense will prevail. If it doesnt, perhaps a 15 to 35 law may help. It goes in effect in october. Leaders heard an update on the Pilot Program last week. They have not voted to make it permanent. Transportation leaders can raise or lower prices based on the demand and time of day. The goal is to reduce the amount of time one person stays parked in a single space. People in the bay area know what could be a nightmare to park in San Francisco. We recently looked at the numbers according to a 2016 report, there were approximately 172,000 offstreet Parking Spaces in the city in 2014. In 2015, they were 280,000 onstreet Parking Spaces. Almost always a parking Space Available on the opposite side of the street when i drivethrough the city. Over here, taking a while to travel through the south bay. We talked about this crash and it started slowing farther south. You are okay at that 682 interchange. This starts before capitol expressway. Overall, the two will see more traffic through san jose and pushing up to Silicon Valley. We talked about the crash that cleared on 80. Its now 36 minutes. Last report was 53, now its 36. Its greatly improving. The traffic is clearing and leaving the bay bridge toll plaza expected to be more crowded. At least theres nice sunshine. Hopefully we will be walking on sunshine this weekend. Right. This weekend, things quiet down. It will be nice and much cooler. We get rid of the humidity and it will be a nice weekend as you start to make plans on this tuesday. Its going to be on saturday, 87 degrees inland. On sunday, well wrap up the weekend with slightly cooler temperatures in a few spots like the inland valleys. Up to 84 degrees. Governor brown and others look at a bill that boost the chances of becoming law. The govern announced his support of the bill. It allows them to force federal immigration laws or asking undocumented immigrants about their status. It expands a list of crimes allowing officers to hand undocumented criminals to the feds. The coauthor calls it a big step forward. Protects members. Protects working families, immigrants. Mothers accept brated from their children and children separated from their mothers. It puts them at odds with the white house. Assembly may vote on the measure as soon as this week. Its not just california pushing back against the president , congress is, too. This morning, everything is calmed down, for now. But, looking back at those storms, back up the radar 12 hours so we could see all the activity going on. There you go. You see the storms firing up over the sierra, central valley, rolling into the area. By our estimate from the National Weather service, looking at lightning detection data, we had over 1200 cloudtoground lightning strikes and 7,000 from cloudtocloud.
