The messages theyre trying to deliver. Thom jensen, the Police Response has seemed clear berkeley pd was not sitting back this time around. They jumped right in. Reporter they did, raj. And they were serious about this from the beginning. The chief told me earlier this week, they were going to be out in force, and they were. Oakland pd here, berkeley pd, other departments assisting. And there were literally, i believe, probably hundreds of officers out here in berkeley today. And it did get violent for a while. We were right in the middle of it. A lot of pushing. And like you said, some arrests. Some for violence. And this one and a few others because protesters were wearing masks. However, a large group of those black block protefrts showed up wearing masks. Police did not go after them because it may be because there were so many of them. Hundreds of those counterprotesters, including that black clock group came into the park here and had been blaming that group for much of this year. It really allowed democracy in action in the park this afternoon. The voices of the handful of a dozen or more altright supporters were shouted down mostly by the numbers of counterprotesters. Many of them demanding why those altright folks were here anyway alleging allegiance. The black people are genetically inferiol to white people. Why is it what is that . Im asking you, denounce that idea right now. Say to everyone here that black people are not genetically inferior to white people. [ chanting ] and we saw a lot of shouting like that. We heard a lot of that. I can tell you that gentleman who husbawas jawing with the counterprotest, he told us hes not a white supremacist and does not support their views. We have to point that out although some counterprotesters questioned that bringing up image s of him on the internet. Some wearing trump hats were drowned out by the masses and at one point chased out of the park. Police have been responding to all of these altercations as they occur. It seemed like everything calmed down for the most part. Just a short time ago, just over here, we heard what sounded like a stun gun being used. I looked over there, and there was a female protester taking a swing at one of those altright folks. Police immediately came across the street from berkeley pd, broke it up, separated them. No arrests but separated the crowd and kept the peace. Now theyre watching for tonight because in the past when that black block group was here, violence did occur. Some vandalism downtown. Residents. A number of religious groups involved as well. Over near campus, several blocks of Oxford Street were filled with demonstrators for the peaceful bay area rally against hate earlier today. Many later marched in the streets towards civic center but had a message. They say a clear message to send. The previous protest in berkeley may have been well intentioned, but they were meant to include the majority of city workers and residents and people who wanted to come out and express our opposition. Its important to show that were united as a community and here in the bay area, were not going to stand for hate.
