Hes documenting the states biggest wildfire. This is time lapse video and takes you literally right along the fire line. This is north of santa rosa, Pretty Amazing to see this perspective. The fire broke out one week ago, and its burned 68,000 acres. This is less than 25 contained. Nbc bay areas Jodi Hernandez is in lake county where firefighters are using a new tactic today. Reporter its being called one of the fiercist fires california has ever seen. The 68,000acre rocky fire has been raging for a week now, giving firefighters the battle of a lifetime. The fire did for the most part what the models were showing. But it burned i dont even know how many times faster. There was areas where we thought it would take three days to reach highway 20, for example. It took four hours. Saturday, this fire burned 22,000 acres in five hours. With this fuel model and fuel types we have here, the computer simulator said it should happen in seven days. This fire did it in five hours. Reporter the fire has now burned 39 houses, and while yesterdays wet weather gave firefighters a chance to make some headway, the weather is heating up again today, raising worries. With the increased temperatures and drop in relative humidity, that makes the fire activity increase. So if the fire activity increases, then anything could happen. Reporter those who live in the fire zone are hoping firefighters can get the upper hand. Theyre incredibly grateful. I cant thank them enough. They have given us everything they can. I mean, theyre putting their lives on the line for us, as american citizens. And theyre trying their best to keep this fire under control. I know its been a very tough one to get under control. It has been difficult. That was Jodi Hernandez reporting. Lets get back to some of that video. So much of our video for the past week has been from a distance or from our helicopter. This video by this film maker really takes you to the scene. Lets bring in our chief meteorologist, jeff ranieri. And jeff, were talking about the weather. And i know you have the lightning possibly in the forecast here. And that is for friday. Thats the day were going to be tracking this for the Morning Hours until clear lake, right through the rocky fire. Now i want to show you on our maps, were taking a look at the surface winds, and theyre primarily coming out of the north, right across the fire. Thats a very dry wind, and thats what helped to increase temperatures today, at least by 9 degrees, right over that fire location. So making it tougher for those firefighters. As we get a look right now on the fire lines, a temperature of 87 degrees. Humidity at 26 . Winds gusting to 12 miles per hour. So thats again a shred of good news. We havent seen any major wind events above 40 miles per hour. And it looks like for tomorrow well still see winds anywhere from 10 to 20. So no huge wind event. But it is going to be very erratic on the fire lines for the firefighters. Humidity recovery in the overnight hours should jump up to 80 . But for the daytime humidity, again for tomorrow, it will be down to 20 . Well talk more about this risk of Severe Weather coming up in that full forecast and thats in about ten minutes. Tonight, the Santa Cruz Warriors are planning a Community Celebration to honor 8yearold maddie middleton. She was murdered ten days ago. Her 15yearold neighbor is accused of sexually assaulting and killing her. Investigators found her body in a dumpster. The event honoring her life will include performances from those who lived at the Tannery Arts Center with maddy. It will be august 23rd in santa cruz. The event starts at 3 00 p. M. We have new Surveillance Video San Francisco police want you to see. Investigators say the socalled rainbow crew has struck again. Police are working to track down seven women and two men who walked into an Unnamed Department store last week and ransacked the place. The burglars got away with 11,000 worth of merchandise. Most mostly cologne and perfume. Some suspects are wanted on various burglary, assault and drug charges. Hillary clinton is expected to arrive in the bay area within the next 90 minutes. That is the sound of a shootout between the suspect and the s. W. A. T. Team. It took place at a theater near nashville, tennessee. Police say the suspect armed with a gun and hatchet unleashed a plume of pepper spray during a screening of mad max this afternoon. The s. W. A. T. Team exchanged gunfire with the suspect, killing him. Amazing amazingly, no moviegoers were killed. Three were treated for pepper spray exposure and one from the hatchet. Somebody has a gun and stuff like that. Im eternally grateful excuse me for metro police department, for their Fast Response today. The suspect is 29 years old from that area. His name has not been released yet. The motive is unknown. A major breakthrough today in the hunt for the malaysian airliner that disappeared last year. There is now there is no doubt the plane crashed into the sea. It is with a very heavy heart that i must tell you that an International Team of experts have conclusively confirmed that the aircraft debris found on reunion island is indeed from mh370. That announcement gives the family and friends of the 239 people on board at least some closure. Experts have always believed the mh370 crashed in the indian ocean. So i just ran outside and i started banging on windows not windows, but doors, and just screaming fire. Now everything in my apartment is gone. I just lost everything. 32 units destroyed. A firefighter says this is so destructive because the apartments shared attic space. The red cross is onsite helping those displaced. Honoring the fallen. Tonight san jose leaders are rekindling efforts to create a permanent memorial for the officers who gave their lives for the city they protected. 12 hours have fallen in san jose. Back in march, you may remember a gunman shot and killed Michael Johnson, a 14year veteran of the force. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro is live at city hall, one of several potential sites for this permanent memorial. Marianne. Reporter janelle, today mayor sam liccardo and two other City Council Members issued this memo to the rules committee to get the ball rolling to build a new memorial for the fallen officers of san jose. A memorial that could be possibly erected right here at city hall. When San Jose Police officer Michael Johnson was shot to death in march, the community mourned. Leaving flowers at the police department. Lining up to salute him at his memorial. Even turning the lights blue at the rotunda at city hall. His death renewed an effort launched more than six years ago to build a memorial for officers killed in the line of duty. San jose, major city. We have had a lot of fallen officers, unfortunately. But we dont have a solid memorial to memorize and to memorialize him. Reporter 12 san jose Police Officers have been killed in the line of duty since 1924. San jose city councilman, raoul pa relyis is now reaching out to the families of the fallen officers to get their input on what the new memorial will look like. Three possible locations include here at city hall, the police department, or the Police Officers association. Were already projecting around 180,000 is what were looking at for the project. Reporter the city will provide the bulk of those funds, but the community, including the San Jose Police foundation, is already working to raise the rest of the money to make the memorial a reality. A surveillance photo shows the frenchspeaking man leaving his hotel in engelwood, a 28yearold golfer. This marks the third time a search has been launched for a missing athlete of these games. Hopefully it works. Lets get a check of our forecast. Here is chief meteorologist jeff ranieri. We have the possibility of lightning as we head throughout the next 48 hours, primarily on friday. Youll see that added shower chance to the microclimate forecast, scrolling at the bottom of your screen as that begins to populate. I want to show you the Doppler Radar now. Were tracking the sub tropical moisture to the south. A few isolated storms developing near monterey, very close to gilroy. Well keep a close eye on this over the next hour and a half. We may actually have some isolated storms to be talking about. Otherwise, well get you outside the sky camera network. The increased temperatures today, that added heat up to 81 in the south bay now and blue skies. 77 for the peninsula. 92 in the east bay for the average. So definitely hotter there. San francisco, even getting in on the game with 72. Now we can show you from the north bay and our belvedere camera some of those clouds that we noted on the Doppler Radar. You can see its a high cloud blowoff here from the north bay. No rainfall up here into the north bay or San Francisco tonight. But just some beautiful cloud cover. Lets go ahead and get you into the forecast for tomorrow morning, and i do think low clouds will be coming back here from the north bay, down to the south bay, with a few breaks of sundown here towards the Silicon Valley and starting off with 61. And the peninsula will begin with 63. Lets advance the story right into the microclimate forecast as we head throughout thursday. And the two biggest differences, temperatures will increase one to about 3 degrees and high clouds moving across. Still very comfortable for san jose with 86 degrees. For the peninsula, notice this, even the coastline going up to 70 in pacifica. Palo alto, 83. San francisco, 72 in the mission and the financial district up to 71. For the north bay, east bay and also for the tri valley, hotter temperatures, tri valley no 100s, but you will be pushing into the mid 90s tomorrow for livermore with 94. Danville also expecting 91. The forecast this week, all be it, has been very complicated and you can see were still tracking remnant moisture from Tropical Storm guillermo. All the way down near hawaii. It looks like this will continue to get mixed into our flow the next two days. So what is this going to mean for us . By thursday night, our storm system begins to develop offshore. At about 8 30. As that begins to progress closer by 3 00 and 4 00 in the morning on friday, you can see the forecast models picking up on a little bit of shower activity. Nothing major. But as we head throughout friday morning, by 5 00, you can see some bullseyes developing up here. Some stronger intensities of rainfall near santa rosa. Its having a hard time producing some of this rainfall towards the east bay and the south bay. I still think well have some isolated storm cells as far south as san jose. So again, for friday morning, this means the potential here of what looks to be rainfall. Trace amounts to maybe. 800 of an inch. In the north bay and east bay, we could have some of our best possibilities of getting some rainfall there. San jose maybe only. 300 of an inch. Good news when it comes to short term fire danger. We just have to watch out for lightning strikes. By this weekend, temperatures warm up, saturday and also sunday for the south bay.
