And going into conference play, we had more top 25 wins than anybody in the country. Season started off fantastic. I dont think you could have hoped for a better start of the season. We undefeated for a while. Lets go gaps. Well wait 25. Yeah, we were killing you know doing our thing. And then adversity hit the trojans. Theyre going to hand ucla their first loss of the season. The final in overtime i think it really started to feel like we hit a slump when lauren went out. I really struggled, like i think the pressure of everything got to me. Youre a person first and the athlete comes second and you have to take care of yourself. Yeah, i decided that it was probably best if i step out and take a break mentally. Lauren really wanted to play, but she couldnt. She had medical things she had to take care of and it was a tough decision. But she needed to put herself first. A lot of me still feels resentful towards myself because of what that week was like for my teammates. When you lose your center, its really hard to make adjustments and so your wheels start turning. What do i have to do to make up for this loss will get another chance with eight seconds remaining in the game. At the end, it came down to a last second shot. And my teammates know to i think it would throw my teammates off if i showed out without showed up without straightening my hair. I always get very excited for games, especially home games, but obviously this one thats just a little different. Got a little. Theres me like an extra buzz in the air, i feel like so im excited. The big tens all time leading scorer has the opportunity to become the ncaa womens record holder has changed the economics and change the eyeballs on the game of Womens Basketball, because there was a reason always, not only to tune in just to watch her as an exciting basketball player, but, oh, shes going to break the next milestone. And things certainly that fed into the fervor of why people wanted to watch her play. Caitlyn obviously, this is a historic day. Its historic for our program, but its also historic for Womens Basketball. And so just thankful that we are all a part of it. Um, tonight were celebrating caitlyn. You bet we are. We could go on and on about what Caitlyn Clark has done for the game of Womens Basketball. But tonight she is eight points away from cement herself in the history of the game. The energy i had inside myself, i just knew that i was going to be one of those nights. I feel like sometimes as a competitor, like you can feel that you can honor to be up there next to kelsey plum at the top, and the litany of other names that are up there. But remember its all the smiles, memories and so many special moments that are behind that number that are yours for a lifetime. Im lucky enough to be in the same room with all these really great players that i idolized growing up. Its just really unfathomable and im just really grateful. Honestly. Kikis first summer here, her trainer was out here and i said , what do i need to know about kiki . That maybe i dont . He said her confidence isnt what you would think. I set goals and standards for myself, and sometimes when i feel like im not living up to them, or i could be doing better, i should be doing better. I get, like, frustrated. Whats been your experience like the last couple months . And like what . What is it that you want to get out of doing this work . Playing fearless, playing with like that . Most confidence . I think that can be an area where i feel like i can improve in and i can help me get to that next level. I started seeing a sports psychologist. Obviously, im a trainers, i take care of my body and i think, um, adding someone who can help me with the mental side of the game is something that could be really helpful for me. So playing freely and playing with more confidence, right. Do you have a sense of like what gets in the way of that . I its a fear of results. Mhm. Yeah. Mhm missing a shot or not making the right play. Um that kind of stuff. Yeah. Fear of loss. Fear of failing you know really play a factor in any decision that i made on the court. How long has this kind of fear your words. Right. Like fear of like outcomes. How long have you been noticing this . I was in college. Yeah, since i started college. So you felt a little more free before you got here . Yeah. I mean, i think when you get to this level, obviously each level up, theres no expectations, better opponents, all that stuff, new pressures. So like each mistake, i feel like carries more weight because the consequences i guess are greater. Its pretty natural to be afraid, right . Especially when you really care. But hopefully want to leverage it rather than have it create like the stuckness that you feel. Maybe sometimes right where youre hesitating or kind of like overthinking. So like to be confident in those moments we want to notice, like one of the thoughts are constricting and get back to like what works right a little bit more consistently, which is what im hearing from you is like more technical cues, right . Like get my feet set. Whats it sound like . Yeah my footwork, my mechanics, my release. Yeah specific things within my shot that im focusing on. Yeah. And how many times when you focus on the mechanics and being grounded in your own body, have you made the shot basically every time . Yeah, most times yeah. And this like doing this work is really like what creates that freedom, right . Youre doing all the right stuff tacos. I know. You want to do right this box . Yep. First time. Yes. Lets okay. I was like, dang, that feels like a long time ago. But it was like, i feel like the season went by so fast. It was in january. Yeah, it was on my birthday. I first lost, didnt play sc. I feel like tomorrow will be good for us because like when youre watching film today, i realize utah was our second loss, right of the season. Yes, after. And thats what kind of started like some of the yeah, yeah struggle, hardship, adversity. And we really never beat utah before. Nope. Get ready for a fun pac 12 matchup. Its the number 12 bruins taking on number 80 in utah. I knew all along that in order for us to achieve our goals and get where we wanted to be at the end of the season, lauren needed to be playing with us. So to have her back made me believe again that, okay, you know, we can do this. When i was going to the locker room to get ready for the game, we were just like, oh my god, lori, im like, youre back at poly. Thats amazing. And it was just like we were a whole again, they are trying to really dial in and get back to what made the beginning of their season successful. Well, ucla early on this season, they were the number two team in the nation. They lose lauren betts for a little bit. Stuff without her. Shes back now play and to feel the mojo and the energy and the environment like within the team and the gym. It just felt like, okay, were rolling again. Hey, tom, for more together, 40 minutes. Lets go. Come on now. Here we go from paulie pavilion in los angeles, california rice ends up with it for ucla. Lob inside. That just has so much size. Another chance here for ucla for osborne. [coach] good job a rookies salary in the nba is millions of dollars. It is a very different enticement for male players to go from college to the nba. players laughing whats your major . Marketing. Are you on schedule to graduate this year . Yeah, i graduate this semester. I have like one more class i need, so. So youre gonna start your masters when you stay here next year . laughs maybe. [news reporter] iowa star Caitlin Clark said today shes gonna go pro. [news reporter] clark declared for the wnba draft just days iowas senior day. I felt more pressure with that decision than, like, ever stepping on the Basketball Court and playing in front of sold out arenas. I think the biggest thing like i was worried about was telling the coaches, just because you never want to disappoint anybody. Once i did tell them, like, i felt the weight of the world was off my shoulders. gentle music caitlin has had a Great College career, a Great College experience as a student, and its time to move on. Its time to move on to the next challenge, basketballwise. Its probably time to move on as a human being as well. And i loved that she announced it when she did so she could put it behind her, so the fans could give her the kind of send off that she deserves. crowd cheers just getting that off my chest and, like, allowing closure for myself, but everybody else around me, i wanted them to know, like, this is the end. crowd cheers [announcer] take it in. When you sort of reflect on the last four years, where do you think that youve left the biggest impact . Honestly, i think our fans, i think the young kids, and i think thats what means the most to me, is seeing the young girls and the young boys that scream and wear my jersey every single night. Thats what makes it so special, and i think as somebody growing up, like i used to be that young kid, and time goes really fast so thats never anything you ever take for granted, and you try to make as much time as you can for them, and thats something that just never gets old. You talk about being inspired as a young kid, youve said it tons of times that its maya moore that inspired you to be this generational type of player. We wanted to make your dream come true. Youve made so many dreams come true. State farm knew it had been some time since youd seen maya, and like a Good Neighbor, state farm is there. Oh, jeez. And maya moore is there. screams oh my gosh. Passing pistol pete is an incredible, incredible accomplishment, and i think its fair to recognize that he played for three years at lsu, and he played without a threepoint line. Oh yeah. As a former post player, i love it when you have a great post battle, and we certainly had that with South Carolina and lsu. I think angel said im bringing it. Kamilla said, i love it. Six players remain for South Carolina. Kamilla cardoso, the only one ejected for fighting, so she will not be able to play in their first round ncaa tournament game. It was the manifestation of a lot of frustration. Things that she felt like werent getting called, some hair pulling, some pushing, just a lot of physicality between these two teams who have been clear they dont like each other. crowd cheers [announcer] in South Carolina, an eighth sec tournament title in the last 10 seasons. intense music crowd cheers that sort of mark on her, i think, left an image in some peoples minds like, hey, is this an issue for her . There was the push in brazil, there was this. crowd cheers [news reporter] the big headline and the most entertaining game, the greatest theater was South Carolinalsu. Im not buying that this is good for the sport. I guess it brings them into the zeitgeist, cause more people will see that there was a melee at a Womens Basketball game. crowd cheers she went and protected and enforced, and ive never used enforced in the context of Womens Basketball. The coach staley, my whole coaching staff, my whole teammates, they are my family, and im gonna defend them no matter what, because they are more than teammates. They are more than friends. [news reporter] look, lsu is playing some of their best basketball. I dont think anybody in that bracket wants to see them. I think well be at two. Well, listen, i have ucla and lsu in my final four. So when you talk about these two teams being in the same region, this is definitely going to be a tough battle. We do better with teams like lsu. We wanna go down this way . Oh yeah. That we can, you know, hunker down in the paint. Yeah. Make sure we control the rebounds. Mmhmm. Its good. What are your thoughts . I think its a difficult, more difficult than like notre dame. Yeah. Or indistinct , that game. Mmhmm. I think lsu is a better team than them. I havent watched em a ton though, honestly. They havent played that many top 25 teams either. Mmmm. But i think if you can get past them, i feel like id rather play iowa than some of the other oneseeds, you know . Yeah. [news reporter] which oneseed is the most vulnerable . [news reporter] iowa. Iowa has a really tough road. Im not saying they cant do it, but this is a tough way for them to go. God, thats so much easier than ours. That is so much easier than ours. people chattering faintly that is an easy bracket. people chattering faintly i thought the Selection Committee did us a little dirty. I thought they wouldve helped us out a little bit, to be honest. If you look at the overall picture, its overwhelming. Just to get to the final four now were gonna have to see lsu or ucla, too. intense music thats what i thought. I thought they would give us a little easier path, but i will say if i gotta pick our twoseed, i wouldve picked ucla. Like, i think theyre very beatable. For iowa to be, not only with lsu, but to be with ucla, just blew me away. Theyre the number two overall seed, so they should have the secondeasiest bracket. We see ucla, which is just a dominant Powerhouse Team built to win a national championship. You see lsu, who has been playing really highlevel basketball, soft tense music but as im looking at that bracket, i was like, this is the murderers row just for the right to get to the final four, and it seemed, it seemed daunting. soft tense music [announcer] omaha logo whooshes [announcer] full court press is presented by state farm.
