So those shelter in place orders have been extended here leaving people locked in their homes overwhelmed by fear and grief. This morning the search intensified for the man accused of gunning down 18 people and injuring 13 more during a devastating rampage in lewiston, maine. The manhunt for robert card now over 35 hours long leading to these dramatic moments overnight. Law enforcement including swat teams and Armored Vehicles swarming a home connected to the suspect. We were there as it all unfolded. Wait. They said robert card by name. They said, we know youre in there. But the search of the home turned up nothing. Still authorities pressing on with more than 350 personnel from multiple states and agencies, including the fbi, atf and u. S. Marshals. The fbi using infrared equipment looking for signs of heat in the deep woods of maine. Neighbors say the u. S. Army reservist knows the area well. This is his stomping ground. This past summer military officials at camp smith training site just north of new york city became increasingly concerned about the Mental Health of Army Reservist robert card. This morning the wife of that now former Alaska Airlines pilot facing charges for trying to crash a plane speaking out. Joseph emerson is facing 83 counts of attempted murder. Enter a not guilty plea. Sara stretch saying she knew her husband struggled with depression but added, thats not my joe. He never would have done that. He never would have knowingly done any of that. Emersons lawyer standing next to his wife, speaking to his actions. He had no intention to harm himself or anybody on the airplane when he acted. Reporter emerson was riding in the cockpit jump seat off duty in route to San Francisco where he was scheduled to fly a 737. Midflight, prosecutors say, he tried to grab and pull two red fire handles that would have activated the planes emergency Fire Suppression system and cut off fuel to its engines. Weve got the guy that tried to shut the engine down out of the cockpit. Reporter then allegedly telling a Flight Attendant, you need to cuff me right now or its going to be bad. According to the complaint, he tried to grab the handle of an emergency exit door but a Flight Attendant stopped him. That flight diverted to portland where it safely landed. It definitely was scary. The flight at attendant made the announcement that there was a passenger having a mental breakdown. Reporter according to the criminal complaint, emerson admitted he had been struggling with depression, had not slept for 40 hours and had taken psychedelic mushrooms 48 hours prior. Suspect Bryan Kohberger appearing in court where a judge denied his teams effort to dismiss the indictments against him. Kohberger is facing counts in the stabbing death of four students there. The judge also releasing a late filing after the hearing to say that he is still reviewing the dna information and has yet to decide if kohbergers defense team is entitled to see how the state zeroed in on their client using dna, but the judge did deny the indictment against kohbergers stands. Wearing a blue suit and tie, Bryan Kohberger appearing before an idaho judge. State of idaho versus brian kohberger. Reporter his attorney calling for dismissal of the grand jury indictment and charges he faces for the murders of four students last november claiming there were flaws in the indictment and an error in grand jury instructions. Theres clearly prejudice in the record that the court can see. Reporter but the judge saying the request for dismissal would require him to overturn over 100 years of idaho law. I am constrained by existing law. I cant just change the law. I am going to deny that argument. The defense has to ask that these charges be dismissed for alleged failures in the grand jury process. Any failure of the defense in a Death Penalty case could constitute malpractice on their part. Reporter prosecutors saying they placed kohberger at the scene of the crime with dna obtained by a cheek swab that is a statistical match to dna found on the knife sheath near the victim madison mogan. Kohberger maintains his innocence and his defense team said he was driving around alone the night of the murders. The victims families eager for a trial date to be set. I think its important for the families to really have time and a date when they can go into that courtroom and see justice to be served. Reporter the judge saying he has not made a formal decision about allowing cameras in the courtroom. Im not going to ban cameras in the courtroom. But i need to have more control over what the cameras are doing. He is encouraging anyone thats using a camera in that courtroom to use restraint. The bottom line is, were going to see, in living color, this trial. Reporter now theres still a mystery about this murder weapon which authorities never recovered. But recently unsealed search warrant documents show that investigators sought records from amazon earlier this year about an undisclosed customers click activity pertaining to knives and accessories. The manhunt for 40yearold robert card now over 35 hours long, leading to these dramatic moments overnight, swat team and Armored Vehicles swarming a home connected to the suspect.
