And its been that ever since. Reporter but it wasnt until 15 that she convinced her mom to move from knoxville to nashville. For the next few years, performed at bars. 2013, at 19 years old, a big break, a record deal. I was like, ive got to do it. I cant halfass it, ive got to do it. I just wrote fulltime for a year. Like, i knew that songwriting was my superpower and is. Its the thing that i value the most. Reporter a decade later, she used that superpower to get through one of the toughest moments of her life, splitting from her husband, morgan evans, after nearly five years of marriage. Do you think you got married too young . Well, i think to each their own. I know people that got younger than i did and are very happy. So i dont think there is a too young. I think i dont regret anything, and i think thats important to say. Well, you know some of it is, i love my children so much, i want to get away from them. And i also you know, jerry seinfeld, i feel like i should help him. I should help his career. I should get out there. I think i want to introduce america to this terrific comedic mind. Id like him to experience some success. No, its an incredible opportunity. By the way, you know, it is an ongoing balancing act, you know, of work and family. You know, obviously the priority is work. No, obviously the priority is family. I love acting, but now that theres a strike, thats removed. So its one of those things where every three months, im recalibrating. Byron there is the strike going on. Your thoughts about that . And your peers and your profession right now with the sagaftra strike going on . Im a union guy, but i also feel as though, you know, these what the actors and the writers are asking for is not something that large. The business has shifted, and people have to adjust. And you cant do it without the writers and the actors. We should deal with this stuff. And i think that people should be honest. Because its a different landscape, being a working actor or a writer, than it was years ago. Byron the new special dark pale. Lets take a look. Its not like you learn from one child, you can apply to another one. Kids are annoying, theyre individual humans. Byron your comedy is clean, yet you say the greatest comic ever was richard pryor, and his comedy was not clean. How do you decide to live in a lane youre in and be comfortable with that . Well, i think comedians, what we love about richard pryor, what we love about chris rock or jerry seinfeld, is that theres an authenticity to how they approach things. And so, i mean i think comedians often get credit or criticism for doing something that is just who they are. Im from a small town in the midwest. I curse in everyday life, but if im talking about mini muffins, its not necessary to curse. But thats whats authentic for me. I also love lewis black, and i want to hear him curse, i want to hear chris rock articulate things his way. Because its authentic for him. Byron youre 57 years old. Youre having a wonderful career. Did you imagine youd be in this place . Because you were a corporate guy. Some of it is, i was very much raised to seek security. My father was the first to go to college. Security was wearing a coat and tie. You know, i was in my early 20s and my mother died. It was this devastating thing that really, you know, made me question a lot of things. She died when she was 53. So if i had this desire to pursue standup and acting, i was going to go for it. But i did not have an expectation that i would be able to do standup or that i would be an actor or that i would have ten comedy specials. I mean, 15 years ago, if youd told me i would have ten comedy specials, i wouldnt believe it. Byron in addition to the special, youre heading on the road with jerry seinfeld. Whats it like working with him . Jerry and i have been doing shows together off at gotham comedy club, popin shows, us doing a set. We get to hang out and chat afterwards and talk shop. You know, some of it is, we talk about comedy the way i imagine football coaches discuss strategy on offense and defense. And its this neverending conversation. And jerry is a purist. So youre not distracted by gossip or some kind of trend. Its real theoretical comedy talk, which is fun. Theres a lot going on in your life. Whats next . Im going to run for president. No, i you know, for me, being the father of five kids, you know, its like obviously that is my priority, right . I mean, thats the most important job i will fail at, right . But careerwise, you know i dont know. I mean, ive been around long enough to know that its all about creative fulfillment, right . And thats really what i seek. All the other stuff is kind of inconsequential. You seem like a man at peace. You know, maybe im full. I dont know. No, i im very grateful. But you know, look, ive got teenagers.
