All right. Well, moving on an historic day for the California State University system. It has announced its first chancellor of color. Joseph castro has served as president of fresno State University since 2013 and is nationally recognized for creating a more diverse university. Castro was born and raised in the Central Valley and attended stanford and ucberkeley and is the grandson of farm workers from mexico. The csu board of trustees today selected him to lead the nations largest Public University system with more than 480,000 students at 23 campuses. He will start on january 4th after the new year. Today Governor Newsom announced the nations most aggressive move to fight Climate Change by banning the sale of gas powered cars and passenger trucks by 2035. All vehicles sold in 15 years must be zero emission. The governor directed the board to implement the phase out and says more than half the greenhouse emissions are by vehicle traffic. If you want to mitigate the rise of sea level, the loss of ice seats around the globe, then this is a policy for other states to follow. We know we have an obligation to keep on working to clean up the air and make it as clean as it can be. This is neither that difficult or that expensive. So the infrastructure to make this happen can absolutely take place. Not everyone is onboard, though. Critics brought up the expensive costs of zero emission cars particularly for low income californians. The governor says the price of electric vehicles will become more affordable than gas powered cars by 2035. Will that be enough to get consumers onboard . 7 on your sides Michael Finney has some insight for us. Reporter you know, what is interesting is people are pretty much onboard right now. California leads the nation in the purchase of electric vehicles. When youre driving down a highway, keep in mind one out of every ten cars on the roads are electric vehicles. What about the rest of us . How will we feel when the sale of gas cars are banned years . The ucdavis hybrid and plugin Research Center says most of us wont care. If they will have to wait to charge it at home or at work and the infrastructure will be there. Reporter if you got that, it is a big ho hum to most californians. Just like with regular or premium gasoline by the way youll have regular or premium chargers. A premium charge might take five minutes a regular charge somewhere around 30. Electric cars will go 400 miles between charges. Economy cars 150 miles. I dont think youll see a lot of pushback on this. As long as they can actually get the job done. 400 miles that when theyve done studies thats pretty much it. Really interesting. Of course the technology is only Getting Better every year. Thank you very much. Well, Car Companies like honda and ford believe it or not are applauding todays announcement. In fact, ford has a new ad campaign out today touting its alliance with california. California asked all auto makers to cut Greenhouse Gas emissions and fight for cleaner air. Chevy, jeep, and toyota said ford said yes. Ford is the only American Auto maker standing with california for reduced Greenhouse Gas emissions. Gas emissions have been a political lightning rod between california and the federal government. The Trump Administration wants to roll back fuel economy standards in california, go the opposite direction. Gm and other auto makers are expected to fight the governors order arguing it is a massive undertaking that requires an overhaul of fuel infrastructure, building codes, and consumer demand as well. Theyll begin in ernest now with the new order by the governor.
