All right, frances, thank you. We just finished up an entire week here at abc 7 devoted to the challenges of going back to school. As we start classes in the next couple of days and weeks, one of the biggest concerns is the Digital Divide. School districts have been working throughout the summer to find solutions, trying to get every student a laptop, an internet connection. Some cities are installing free wifi in public spaces. But is it enough . Divide goes much deeper than just owning a device. Reporter in marin city, kids are soaking up their final days of summer. But with the new school year now out going back to school rns remotely. Internet access as a privilege. Everybody dont have it. Reporter paul austin, an organizer of this summer camp, works with underprivileged kids in marin city where the median household is a third of that in the surrounding areas. For months now hes seen how the pandemic has put an even greater spotlight on the socalled Digital Divide, the disparity between families that have access to technology and wifi and those who dont. Paul says most of the students he mentors have been given chro chromebooks and hotspots from their schools. But the Digital Divide is more than just getting a device. These kids dont grow up with a computer at home so theyre not 100 confident at working on a computer and all the functions of a computer. Theyve also got to look at, if they do log into it, dont pressure them to make sure that the video is on. They might not feel too comfortable showing what their home may look like. Reporter these concerns only begin to scratch the surface of the challenges School Districts across the bay area face this fall as they make sure to student gets left behind. At oakland unified, where 70 of the students qualify for free lunches, the district has raised 12. 5 million through the oakland undivided initiative. Still, its no easy feat. The district estimates half their students, roughly 25,000 kids, need some sort of connectivity or vicadvice. We have computers and broadband on order. Were doing everything we can to make sure all the families that qualify get what they need. Reporter even then, theres unforeseen challenges, supply and command. The 25,000 new laptops are on back order. Until then theyve supplied most of their students with an interim device. Theres still a chance some wont have one ready when the school year starts. This is aed h ed heherculean. Were in a herculean world right now. Is this the education they would get in School Every Day . No, its not, and theres no way around that. But were doing everything we can to ensure the education they get meets the standards that we need to uphold for them and that going forward, once were out of this, theyll be ready to pick. Reporte i students who he be devices from their schools. Our school is a wealthy school and a lot of students are wealthy. Reporter but stephanie, a rising senior who Juggles School and a fulltime job at target, says even with the devices, she fears the Virtual Education will be lacking and she wont be able to get additional help like some of her classmates. All those kids can afford tutors. When school starts, we cant afford to pay 100 an hour to get tutors. Most of us, our parents dont know what were learning. My parents, they arent born here. They dont know half of the stuff im being taught. Its hard to ask them for help when they dont even know it. Reporter throughout the spring, paul stepped up and created free makeshift learning pods that gave students a safe space to work and get support. He hopes in the fall the School Districts step up and do the same, a solution to the Digital Dividehaty ki but it wi be hard for certain kids. Thats the reality of it. We just cant turn a blind eye and forget about that. We have to stand up for the kids who cant stand up for themselves.
