Again in Santa Clara County. Here is our live look there, this is being called the park fire, and now that the sun is coming up, you can see the smoke there, still some flames burning in the distance, and this is supposed to be some pretty tough terrain that these firefighters are working through right now to fight this fire. Cal fire says at least 40 acres burned, as of 1 00 this morning so we are awaiting another s update from them. Well see if its burned more at this point and Morgan Hill Police say ten homes have been evacuated. They do not expect the fire to threaten any more homes. East dunn road before Anderson Lake is closed. Keep that in mind if you are traveling through this area. Cal fire says to avoid that area if you can. No word yet on the cause of this fire. Contra costa county firefighters had a busy holiday responding to dozens of fires, this is fire in bay point, crews are working to put out the flames on wharf drive, as fireworks go off in the background. Its unclear what started this fire. 16 fires were caused by fireworks last night in the span of five hours. Our news director said shes in oakland, that they were hearing fireworks going off until 3 30 this morning. Here in San Francisco, around 4 30 this morning, from our station on the embarcadero, we could hear some illegal fireworks going off, very loud, sounded very close, so really, this has been happening all through the night. In all, there were 67 total fires here in the east bay, including ten structure fires and 27 vegetation fires. There is some good news, though, no homes were lost and no one was hurt. Abc 7 News Reporter ansar hassan has more from pittsburg. Reporter firefighters were quick to contain a fire burning near classrooms at delta view elementary in pittsburg. Firefighters say it was started by illegal fireworks. I know its a holiday but they need to be careful. Because this is our school. This is our neighborhood, so we want them to be careful. Reporter contra costa count y fire Officials Say they ramped up fire crews, working with multiple agencies for what theyre expecting to be a very busy fourth of july. We will respond to probably 20 to 30 or more fires just here in the east portion of our county tonight. Our resources are stretched thin. Its not even dark and weve responded to three fireworks caused fires. Typically the highway 4 corridor through pittsburg and antioch is typically busier for us and our fire district. Reporter its also a saturday night, with so many people stuck home because of covid19 and no public fireworks, chief brouchard says its led to an increase in people using illegal fireworks. With the noticeable uptick in fireworks usage, unfortunately it feels like its in every city, in every community that we serve. Reporter pittsburg, ansar hassan, abc 7 news. San francisco firefighters were busy all night as well responding to more than 20 fires. One happened at mclaren park in Visitacion Valley and another near the old site of Candlestick Park and hunters point. Its not clear if either fire was caused by fireworks. The department staffed extra firefighters this weekend to handle the influx of calls. Those fires come hours after a grass fire in San Franciscos bay view that was caused by fireworks. Photos show where flames scorched the ground here and fire spread to two acres before crews were able to get it under control. Fire departments warnings certainly didnt stop people from setting off illegal fireworks last night. This is video from the bay view area, which shows colorful bursts lighting up the sky, not far from power lines either. That is concerning. Here is a time lapsed video of the illegal fireworks in san jose. If you didnt know better, you would almost think that these are professional fireworks, theres so many of them. Weve heard reports of about a dozen small brush fires in the city of san jose, but its not certain that those are related to fireworks. So a very active weekend. With almost every fourth of July Celebration canceled in the bay area, gilroy was the only official show in the area. Reporter any other year this annual tradition of lighting up the skies would have been one of many celebrations all over the bay area but we already know this year is unlike any other. I think its a great idea. I think morgan hill should have had theirs, too. We couldnt do fireworks in our town and this is like not as busy as santa cruz. Were trying to stay away from everyone, Wearing Masks when were close to people so i think that would be okay. Reporter this is literally the only show in town. This year the parade was canceled, the pandemic turning gilroys downtown into a ghost town. This is what it looked like, shuttered stores, barely anyone around. Still at this fireworks stand, optimism. Theyre raising funds for a local school and fireworks sold out fast. We have a lot of new residents here in gilroy that are coming to get fireworks because theyre trying to give their children some more memories and make it a little bit more special for them while were still in quarantine. Reporter this years fireworks launch from Gilroy High School is higher than last year, to give people the chance to spread out, so that homes within two and a half miles could see them. California congresswoman Jackie Speier is calling for an investigation. Federal prosecutors have charged 22yearold cessry aguilar in connection to the case, accused of helping another soldier get rid of guillens body. The other soldier who was a suspect killed himself when confronted by authorities. New details about a story in the south bay. A restaurant in morgan hill serving customers outside for a month now is ordered by the state to stop, and that order could affect every restaurant in Santa Clara County. Reporter these dramatic surveillance pictures provided by dan mccrany, the owner of la dera grill show members of alcohol Beverage Control abruptly shutting the restaurant down friday night. We were visited by two armed officers, everyone was worried. Reporter the closure caused confusion and outrage at the restaurant which had been open for Outdoor Dining since june 5th. The police chief saying abc told him the county did not have approval from the state for dining outdoors. Morgan hill City Attorney vowing to find a solution. We want to do the right thing. Reporter deon lim, abc 7 news. Santa clara county had been allowing Outdoor Dining for the past month. The county responded to us in a statement saying in part the countys application for a variance was not approved by the state. The county is in continued conversations with the California Department of Public Health regarding its application. Adding to the confusion, the county did apply earlier this week for a different variance that would have allowed the reopening of hair salons, nail salons and gyms. A woman seen on Surveillance Video appearing to intentionally cough on a 1yearold at the san jose yoga land the woman has been fired. The Oak Grove School district confirmed to abc 7 news the woman in that video is no longer an employee. She was seen here on video walking over to the babys stroller, pulling down her mask and then coughing. Police say it appeared to be some sort of dispute over social distancing. At last check the woman had not been arrested. Tensions are running high in martinez, where a black lives matter mural was defaced. The words black lives matter were painted in front of the Contra Costa County courthouse yesterday and one of the artists tells abc 7 news the mural is a direct response to white power flyers found in martinez early last week, but just an hour after it was painted on the street, another group covered it up with black paint, while shouting all lives matter. I think that this is an indication of how much power White Supremacy actually has, the fact that even having something on the street for one hour, they couldnt even tolerate that. It was such a threat to have anybody elses concerns represented by the city and represented by the community. The artists were able to fix the mural. Dwayne carey died at an outside hospital from what the department of corrections said it from complications likely due to covid19. Carey was sentenced to death in 1996 for a murder in los angeles county. He is the third death row inmate to die in two days. Outrage boiling over amid a new scandal rocking the department. Officers Erica Marrero and Kyle Dietrich fired and officer jaron jones resigning over the selfies, smiling and simulating the choke hold used on mcclain, taken two months after the massage therapists death. It is a crime against humanity and decency. Reporter mcclain was walking home last august after buying iced tea at a convenience store, when someone called 11 911 to report him as suspicious. Officers later putting him in a choke hold as he begged for his life. Mcclain died days later at the hospital. Police say during the confrontation with officers, mcclain tried to grab officer jason rosenblatts gun. Months later when rosenblatt received this picture in a text message, he replied ha, ha. He, too, was fired friday. None of the officers have been charged in mcclains death. Colorados attorney general is now investigating. Stephanie ramos, abc news, new york. Protesters in baltimore have torn down a statue there of christopher columbus. You can see the video here, a cell phone video. There the statue goes. The person who took the video says at least 300 people were there taking part in yesterdays protest. When they took the statue down, it broke into several pieces. In San Francisco, the Arts Commission removed the columbus statue in front of coyte tower last month. Many say the statute is not aligned with their values. Teachers are starting to plan a potential return to the classroom in the fall but there is a growing concern they may run out of paid sick days. Abc 7 News Reporter Lyanne Melendez looks closer at what teachers could face. Reporter when a teacher calls in sick, the first consideration is who will take their place. My primary concern before covid in terms of calling in sick was that high likely hood there would be no substitute available to cover my class. Reporter olivia utevik gets ten paid sick days a year. Teachers can roll them over. If they contract covid19 they have to quarantine for at least 14 days. I think unlimited sick days during this time is going to be critical. We cannot have any Staff Members feeling pressured to come to work if theyre feeling any symptoms. Reporter right now, School Districts like oakland unified are negotiating with the Teachers Union new terms specific to covid19. School districts would not comment on what they are proposing. The question is, where will districts find the extra money for any added paid sick days . The educators shouldnt have to pay for it with their sick days. The School District should not have to bear the front of it but the state and federal government should have a pool that we can draw from, in case that occurs. Reporter more troubling is if a teacher goes into extended sick leave, a 1976 law says half of their salary would go to pay for a substitute. Thats because Public School teachers in california dont pay into the state Disability Insurance program. Lawmakers in sacramento are looking into making changes to that 44yearold law.
