It is scenes like this that are drawing complaints all over the bay area. Dangerous, illegal fireworks set off nightly in neighborhoods. Now steps are taken to do something to keep it from happening. Reporter in Alameda County the neighborhood fireworks are bigger, stronger and louder than in years past. That is what weve been getting a lot of complaints on, not just the volume but the force of the explosions that people are hearing in the community and a lot of those are the aerial mortars. People arent watching those into the sky, theyre launching them more horizontally instead of vertically so were seeing projectiles into neighborhoods. Littered with this weekends fire power. Why is it worse this year . Law enforcement officials are guessing that people are bored and at home willing to buy illegal fireworks online for diversion, seizures are down. We believe a lot of the fireworks got into the state because a lot of the resources were deployed elsewhere. Reporter coronavirus was a contributing factor and enforcement is a factor. Officers are enforcing on one block and they are another block down. It is widespread. We continue to reach out to the community to find solutions to lessen the illegal use of fireworks and the celebratory gunfire. Reporter and canceled fourth of july shows like the one in moraga. Parks in dublin are banning all fireworks this year. If youre purchasing safe and sane fireworks you could only use them at your Single Family residence. Reporter seizing more illegal fireworks this coming week is becoming a top priority. Officers say they spotted all of the boxes in plain sight in a car in vacaville last thursday, they stopped it after seeing it going 100 Miles Per Hour on 80. They stopped another car for speeding in placerville and it too was loaded with illegal fireworks. In the north bay, Health Officials are growing concerned with the latest coronavirus hot spot. San quentin prison. There was zero cases but as you could see from the California Department of corrections and rehabilitation, the numbers have climbed to more than 300. Abc 7 News Reporter Wayne Freedman talked with families of inmates today. Reporter san quentin is about the last place anyone would want to live even on the best of days. During this pandemic those inside describe the prison conditions as a version of hell. Hes scared. Im scared for him. Im just very, very concerned that my friends are trapped in a petri dish. Reporter lorraine has a son inside. They are two among more than a dozen people we spoke with today of the firsthand knowledge of a hot zonin spied of the prison. A prison in the 1850 is not equipped to deal with a global pandemic. Reporter there was not a single case in may but that changed after a transfer of inmates from chino, where there had been an outbreak. Later 15 of those inmates tested positive for covid19. By then it was too late. Today the state announced san quentin passed the 300 case mark, including staff members. How is that not their fault. Now it is spreading like wildfire in there. Reporter since the pandemic hit our community, the department has worked tirelessly to implement measures to protect staff, the incarcerated population and community at large said the department of corrections in a statement today. But the people inside are saying that with an overcrowded population, they could do more. The cells are about four feet wide by nine feet which means a basic thing like getting six feet distance from someone else is impossible. Reporter those who are sick all in one room. Theyre just leaving them. Like they take their temperature once a day and maybe gift them tylenol and that is it. Reporter what happens behind the walls does matter, they say. The number of covid19 cases are going up across the state. Today the governor said he does not want to revert back to the stayathome order but is prepared to do so if there is a surge. But this week we have experienced an increase that when you stretch it out over 14day band, has gone up by roughly 16 . Reporter the number of people in the icu also increased by 11 . This as businesses throughout e state is currently assisting 11 counts with higher than expected numbers. At the top of the list is los angeles. Governor newsom said while today the situation is manageable, he fears as people become more complacent, the numbers will continue to grow. And revert back to where we were just a few months ago. The tests were suspended because of the pandemic. Face masks will be required at all times. Customers will be screened beforehand. At least two of the cars windows need to be lowered and examiners will place plastic seat covers on the seats. The dmv will reschedule all canceled tests an expects to take weeks to catch up. New tests will not be available until they get rid of the backlog. San francisco is planning to take a step forward one week from today. The mayor announcing that hair salons, nail salons and tattoo parlors could reopen june 29th. Museums and zoos could also reopen. Outdoor bars could reopen and outdoor swimming could re. In the south bay, for the first time in Santa Clara County history, a proposal to declare racism as a Public Health crisis is being presented to the board of supervisors. It was done on wooden boards outside of the zuny cafe on market street. The artist jen bloomer painted a coloring book design and the Emergency Department filled it in.
