Students chanted George Floyds name and called on other youth to do more to fight racism and injustice. Theres, like, a lot of support from the youth, especially in willow glen and everywhere else. America might not be the best place right now, but our generation can step up to the politicize and make it better, hopefully. Organizers say they wanted to rally close to home so people in their neighborhood could hear their message directly. Abc 7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield shared this video of a gathering in moraga in support of the black lives matter movement. As you can see, more than 100 people attended. Sky7 captured this scene in South San Francisco city hall today. Dozens of people rallied and walked in response to george floyd east death. People gathered in livermore this afternoon for a black lives matter march. Sky7 shows the crowd at carnegie park. Attendees were asked to bring signs, wear masks, and stay socially distant. Abc 7 news amanda del castillo is there live. Amanda, tell us whats happening where you are. More than 100 protesters just left Washington High School here in fremont. They are making that twomile trip to Fremont Police headquarters, which is where were at right now. We want to send it to sky7 so you can get a view of what that crowd looks like overhead. Plenty of young people wanting to make a difference. Organizers say theyre expecting around 300 people to come protest the death of george floyd and to push for the end of Police Brutality. Fremont pd added staffing to its patrol division. We are still expecting the citywide curfew to go into effect at 8 00 tonight through 5 00 a. M. Pd says this is to prevent largescale looting, though they add there has been no credible threat. We connected with a 16yearold high school stunt, the first protester to arrive this afternoon with permission from his parents, he shared why hes taking part in multiple protests across the bay area and again today in his hometown. I got to protest for my people and, you know, its a lot going on with the cops hurting innocent black people for no reason. Its just crazy how its, like, i got to walk outside every day and just be scared of the people thats supposed to be protecting us. Today San Jose Police chief explained why his team took some of the measures they did when violence broke out at protesters over the death of george floyd. He insists officers were saving the city from being overrun by agitators. Addressing some of the events that unfolded in san jose over the past week, the city defended its Police Departments response to those they call agitators who were present at otherwise peaceful protests. We have seen too many episodes in which people have exploited the cover of peaceful protest to commit violent acts. The protesters, which began friday afternoon were meant to call attention to the death of george floyd as well as Police Brutality across the nation. However, there were moments of violence. Police chief eddie garcia providing a snippet of what officers saw on the front lines. There ere reports of bottles of urine being thrown a a a officers, and multiple officers were struck on their person, helmet, fate shield with various objects. Of the 180 protestrelated arrests by san jose, nearly half were san jose residents. It was loud, fast, and violent. Theres no other way to describe it. In 21 years, ive never been in a snapshot like that where so much chaos was raining down at one time. Police have come under fire for using tear gas and rubber foam baton rounds during the protests. Raj from Silicon Valley debug a local social justice organization, says he saw some officers aim directly at peaceful protesters. I dont think theres any sort of way you could characterize the actions of the Police Department as appropriate by any stretch of the imagination. And i think there has to be some real accountability over the violence of the officers. The chief is encouraging the community to report any instances of wrongdoing and says all complaints will be investigated. Police departments alone will not be able to right all the collective wrongs being expressed on our streets, but we must acknowledge our responsibility to effect change and the urgency in which we must do so. I was just kind of taken aback. It was just sort of ridiculous. I really wasnt expecting it, honestly. It was really upsetting and i was really scared. But i was also scared for my kids. This is where the incident happened at the corner of marinwood and miller creek, which you can see is now covered in chalk messages. Thanks to 300 protesters who came out one day later to denounce the hate and ask for peace. It was amazing. I mean, it made me feel proud of this neighborhood. Two days ago. City officials in san leandro are asking the state Attorney Generals Office to investigate a Fatal Police Shooting that happened inside a walmart in april. We mentioned this before. Police say 33yearold Steven Taylor who was black threatened them with a baseball bat and refused to drop it. San leandro city manager tells the chronicle there have been calls for an independent investigation of the shooting. He says both the city and city council are comfortable asking for this. In.
