All the details coming up a little bit later in the show, so stick around for my conversation with my buddy, Anthony Anderson. But theres been another story on my mind for weeks now. Im sure youve seen the reports, as well. A number of children around the country, 15 different states now, getting sick and in some cases dying. This obviously hits home, having a 1yearold. Whether you have a 1yearold or an 18yearold, all of these stories, especially as they relate to our children, they hit an extra nerve. There are so many questions that we as parents and as people who love children, we want answers to. Take a look. Doctors and scientists are scrambling to understand the links between the conavirus and a Mysterious Illness affecting children. Disturbing cases first appeared in some of the European Countries hardhit by the virus. Now the syndrome the cdc is calling multisystem inflammatory syndrome, or mis c, is showing up here in the united states. Over 100 cases have been reported in new york, where at least five children have died. Most of the children tested positive for covid19 or for having antibodies to the virus. Symptoms that are similar to toxic shock or kawasaki disease include high fever, red eyes, abdominal pain, and low blood pressure. Questions and concerns grow, that the cdc is acting doctors to report it in cases younger than 21. In medicine it is so important to say we know, see what we dont know, and we are still concerned about this virus and how it affects different populations. Boys make up nearly 60 of pediatric cases in new york. 24 are black, 9 are white. Texas mom Britney Brower took her 3yearold son to the emergency room three times after the temperature kept going up. It was obviously not normal. He had bloodshot red eyes which i confused at first for allergies. When he started having a red town, like a strawberry tongue, especially that last day, it was very concerning. His lips tripled in size, super bread, cracking. When he would sleep, his heart rate was racing so fast, i could just feel it. Tamron doctors diagnosed him with kawasaki disease. Britneys son, titus, is at home recovering. She is joining us out from plano, texas. How is your baby doing, how is titus . He had a doctors appointment last week, and they said it didnt look great. He had a small little member and he has an ekg next week. Tamron you said it took three trips to the hospital before they figured out what was going on with titus. This all started at the end of the month. The doctors ever bring up coronavirus to you . No, i brought it up to them. He wasnt showing the heavy breathing or the Underlying Health conditions. It wasnt until the third time that the doctor said right away it was kawasakis. Tamron let me bring in dr. E that , shes the director of pediatric telemedicine at Columbia University medical center. Thats in new york. Dr. Edith, thank you so much for joining us. Im listening to the details of titus case, ive read about the cases in new york now. They say 15 different states here. Do you think these cases were already there and doctors are now just realizing the need to test . Why all of a sudden the swell in the numbers and the cases now in multiple states . Tamron, its good to be with you. These cases were first reported in new york. Europe had a wave coronavirus, so that in a way makes sense. This illness is also different from traditional kawasaki disease. I dont believe that this was with us before coronavirus. This is a distinct new illness, and we are seeing it now because we believe is happening is we ae primary infection and some of these kids. There is a case out of baltimore, doctor, where there was i believe she was a 15yearold child, her parents reported stomach pains and a rash. And she later passed away. Her mother says that she was a healthy child, so we are looking at this range from the severe, in titus case, 104 temperature and all those physical signs he could see outwardly, to this child, a 15yearold with stomach pains and a rash. I think most parents would not take the child immediately to the e. R. For stomach pain, certainly not now when we are told only go to the hospital in extreme cases. Right, this is challenging for both pediatricians and for parents. You need to have a reliable way to reach your pediatrician, and trust your parental instincts. We keep hearing that the parents knew something wasnt right, and these kids with this new syndrome are sick. These are not the kids that are running around with a mild, lowgrade fever. They have high fevers that persist, they look sick, and they have symptoms that come with a fever. To be when i hear a lot of adults getting the Antibody Test. If youre able to get an Antibody Test for your baby, should you do it . Because i think if youre able to, in an ideal world, yes. I dont think you have a sense in this country of just how widespread this illness has been in children. That is because the testing has prioritized adults who were ill, severely ill with illness, understandably so. As we ramp up our ability to digest, we have to Start Testing children to have a true sense of whats going on here. Tamron should we be concerned is there one particular group of kids more susceptible . I say that because, in the initial stages of the coronavirus crisis, we talked a lot about how men, the numbers showed more men dying from the illness. Are there certain groups of children who are showing signs of being more susceptible . The striking thing about the data is that there is nothing, tamron. There is no underlying medical condition to point to these children being more at risk. We just have to be humble and realize that we still have so much to learn. Tamron kids under 5, how do you get them to wear a mask . Should we be worried about it, that we have to go out with them without masks on . Under two years old, the American Academy of pediatrics has said please, no masks. It is a choking hazard. Over two years old, if you can get your child understand that they have to keep it on and not continue to touch their face, try, but i think you have to understand that some kids will not, and really practice that physical distancing and hand washing. Tamron dr. Edith, thank you so much for joining us. Britney, as a mom of the little boy, i know this has to be one of the most frightening things. We are wishing titus a speedy recovery and
