Pittsburgh International Airport is blazing a new trail in the fight against the coronavirus. It will be the first airport in the country to deploy robots to clean the floors and kill germs with ultraviolet light. Newly released studies are prompting fresh questions about how much more children may be spreading the coronavirus than adults. Earlier i spoke with dr. Alok patel. Thank you for joining us this morning. I want to talk about the fact that as different localities contemplate when to reopen schools, new Research Shows just how easily children can transmit the coronavirus. What are we learning about that and will this continue the chain of transmission . Children seem to be the mystery link in how the virus can spread without large symptoms. Two studies are being referenced right now. One of them is coming out of china looking at several populations. They found that even though children are onethird as susceptible to getting covid19, when theyre introduced to schools, theyre coming in contact three times as much. So without schools even being open, we still see a lot of transmission. That study is basically warning us about increased transmission once kids are in contact with one another. Another early study out of germany was basically showing that children, even with no symptoms but testing positive, still had a really high viral load. Meaning theyre carrying a lot of the virus in their test. They still potentially can be just as infective or contagious as adults are. A top medical group has released a new statement about schools reopening. What do parents need to know . What parents need to know is that opening schools is going to be a priority. The American Academy of pediatrics outlined kind of a strategy for Different School districts to think about when reopening. And were likely going to see large changes. Youve got two big variables. Number one, schools have to Pay Attention to the physical distancing and ways to keep crowds at hand. On top of that schools are going to have to also implement things like masks, potentially. Cleaning down shared surfaces. Passing out hand hygiene. Ive heard ideas about staggering classes, shortening periods. Ive heard an idea about keeping kids in one class and having the teachers rotate. You have to add that to the fact that when kids get into school, especially young kids, they are going to fester so many germs by touching each other and hanging out together. All in all this is going to vary based on school district, resources, geographical spread. We all know it has to happen because schools are a very important place, not only for education, but also for disability services, intervention for social services, nutrition, athletics, and so much more. Its going to be a process and likely a phased one. In the race to find a vaccine there is some promising news regarding pfizer. The drug company has started Human Vaccine trials. How much progress is being made here, and is the timeline moving up at all . I think the progress and the scientific questions and communication is a good thing. Now i alongside a lot of other experts ive talked to are skeptical about the timeline of people saying were going to see a vaccine by september or late 2020. It may be longer. You need to make sure it works, we can manufacture it, and its safe. If all that goes according to plan, we may see a vaccine in record timing, which would obviously be a great thing. Weve talked about and are hearing about different strains of the virus, particularly when it pertains to the coastal regions. Do we know whether any strains are more dangerous than others . We dont yet. Now this Morning Headlines were bursting at the seams of mutated coronavirus is more contagious or more lethal. What the early studies show, which has not been peer reviewed, it just showed that one strain was more dominant. There is a theory that strain could have been more contagious, but other scientists are skeptical and saying its possible that strain just happened to get there first, something called the founder effect, or it was dominant just because it got strong in a certain community. I also want to say that were trying to protect people over 60 years old. Were trying so hard. I want to just say to the people that have lost family and the people that lost loved and the people who have suffered so badly and just made it, we love you, were with you, were working with you, were supplying vast amounts of money like never before. We want that money to get to people and we want them to get better, no matter how well those people can never, ever replace somebody they love. But were going to have something that theyre going to be very proud of. And to the people that have lost someone, there is nobody i dont sleep at nights thinking about it theres nobody thats taking it harder than me. But at the same time i have to get this enemy defeated, and thats what were doing, david, thats what were doing. Our thanks to david. New video from georgia shows an unarmed black man shot and killed after a confrontation with two white men. The video seems to contradict what the two men told investigators. We should warn you the video is graphic. This morning, outrage after new video shows an unarmed black man shot and killed in brunswick, georgia. These are the final moments of 25yearold Ahmaud Arberys life on a street jogging. A truck is parked ahead of him with one man in the pickup bed, another standing next to the open drivers side door. Arbery is confronted by two men, Gregory Mcmichael and his son travis. In the span of seven seconds theres a struggle between arbery and travis mcmichael. Gunshots go off and arbery collapses. The Third District attorney on the case, after the first two prosecutors had to recuse themselves, says after a full review of the evidence the shooting should now be presented to a grand jury. They inserted themselves in his path with using wielding weapons. He had no other choice but to clash with them, and he was killed. Reporter the father, Gregory Mcmichael, is an excop and former investigator with the d. A. s office. He and his son have not been charged. He thought arbery was a burglary suspect and ordered him to stop, claiming his son got out of the truck, then arbery began to violently attack him. A lawyer for arberys family says the mcmichaels are using a citizens arrest statute to justify the shooting. My client was told me was involved in the burglary, and the homeowner thought he was burglarizing used deadly force in order to stop him. Obviously thats not what happened here. Reporter arberys mother is demanding justice. Think about how they come out, these two men, to actually kill my son. And not be arrested. I mean, thats what i just cant seem to understand. Georgias governor is promising a thorough investigation, and the states attorney general said overnight hes deeply concerned and expects justice to be carried out as swiftly as possible. Mona, as we talk about swift justice, people there in georgia say this has been anything but swift. There were protests that happened overnight back in that neighborhood where mr. Arbery was shot and killed. Its important to point out, cases such as this, theres a greater systemic matter at hand here. Cases such as this highlight the issues surrounding, for example, a citizens arrest law that was at play here. Also the stand your ground law. The fact that mcmichael only had to think that this man, ahmaud, resembled a burglary suspect in order to detain him that already led to a conversation of his rights being violated, instead it led to his death, now sparking a conversation about these laws that are on the books. Keep in mind a grand jury wont even happen for more than at least another month, since georgia courts have pretty much been closed because of the coronavirus. The video, its sickening, its disturbing, its real. The video most likely sparked this into overdrive after things had been delayed so much. As a human being, you should be disturbed. And im going to say this. Im going to say, yes, im a black man. Cant change that, dont want to. But as a human being, when you see video like that, you know for a fact that a person should be able to jog, unarmed, and survive. Another thing it points out too is the fact that the video came out, now were having this conversation two months later. The video does not come out, do these conversations change . They shift .
