A lot of news coming out. One of the major headlines, the shelterinplace order extended into early may has a chance of being extended even further in the city. The likelihood that that may 3rd date will be extended is possible. Some other keynotes from that press conference. The mayor acknowledging big news out of sacramento, which is all schools will be closed through the end of the academic year. Well have more on that in just a few minutes. The city is starting an official program to give you a chance to help Senior Citizens or those in need. You can do that on sf. Gov or by calling 311. Now starting tomorrow, at least 400 of the citys homeless will shelter at the moscone center. The city is hoping to secure 2500 hotel rooms by the end of the week, mainly to house the homeless who are tested positive or are showing some symptoms. With possible budget losses in the 1 billion range over the next two years, mayor breed says its absolutely critical that everybody complete the 2020 u. S. Census online. And the federal governments guidance about wearing masks, that could soon change. In an interview today jerome adams told Robin Roberts that the cdc is now reviewing its guidance as to whether masks should be warn by everyone while out in public. Right now theyre not recommended. Even if you do wear masks, it cant be at the expense of social distancing. We dont want people to think hey, im going the wear a Face Covering so its appropriate for me to go out around other people. The most important thing right now to do is for people to stay at home. Dr. Adams says that the cdc does change the stance on masks, people wont need to wear an n95 mask. He praised the mitigation efforts california has put into place, saying they have helped level and flatten the curve, but stress that more efforts must continue. Meanwhile, hospitals and Health Care Workers, theyre running dangerously low right now on personal protective equipment that includes masks. Abc7 News Reporter kate larsen explains how the public is now stepping up to help those who are on the front line. While the cdc considers shifting official guidelines on wearing masks, ordinary citizens are already taking matters into their own hands. By face covers, with n 95 and surgical masks sold out and back ordered until at least may, social media feeds are becoming virtual sewing circles. The homemade masks are making their way to the front line in the fight against coronavirus. Yes making a first distribution to Highland Hospital this week. They requested 600 masks from us. Were also partnering with kaiser. The executive director of my new red shoes, a nonprofit based in redwood city. Normally they distribute shoes to homeless and low income children. But this the midst of the pandemic, their volunteers are now sewing thousands of masks. Within a couple of days of when we launched our effort, we had hundreds of volunteers signed up across the bay area and actually across the country to make these masks for our Health Care Workers. Unfortunately, San Francisco as with the rest of the region, as with the rest of the country, as a severe, severe shortage of masks. Today dr. Grant colfax, San Franciscos director of Public Health said he issued recommendations for all Health Department employees and First Responders to wear masks. Beginning this week, ucsf instituted a universal surgical mask policy. All staff, faculty, trainees and visitors must obtain screening and obtain a mask. Were asking everyone to keep that mask that you receive as long as possible. As for the general public, local and state officials are still waiting on Face Covering recommendations from the cdc. We expect in the next 24 or so hours that the state of california will put out more prescriptive guidelines in that space. In San Francisco, kate larsen, abc7 news. Conarus and the pending guidance about masks. So we have brought back our favorite doctor, special correspondent dr. Alok patel. Doctor, thank you for joining us once again today. I didnt know i was your favorite. Thank you. We love you, dr. Patel. We just heard from the Surgeon General about masks. What are your thoughts on the general public wearing them . There has literally been this back and forth for so long. I would not be surprised. Im saying this right here. I would not be surprised if the next National Guideline is for some type of coverage for the entire public. Now i cannot stress again that that means not an n95 and not a surgical mask, but some type of cloth or another protective substance in front of somebodys face, if theyre going out, especially if theyre going to go to a place that has poor ventilation or to a crowded area. But this does not replace the social distancing or the shelter at place guidelines at all. This is just an extra step. Is. A few weeks ago, we were told not to wear masks. Now were being told maybe we should be wearing masks. There is certainly a lot of mixed messaging here. The administration has said theyre changing this guidance because of new information about asymptomatic spread. So can you explain that . What are your thoughts on this sort of mixed messaging . I think what this really plays to is if fact were learning more and more about this virus and how it transmits almost by the day. So what youre referring to with the asymptomatic spread is we now have a lot of data, mainly from china, from singapore, and even in our own numbers here though that asymptomatic spread is a really big player. So people could be contagious without having any symptoms. In addition, were seeing cases where people are actually contagious up to a couple of days before they show any symptoms. So before we were saying hey, if youre sick, you might be contagious, you should probably wear a mask. But now were seeing that people could be contagious even if they dont have symptoms, even just by talking. So thats why the recommendations might change a little bit, and why people just have to be a little bit more cautious that you could actually be contagious, even if youre not actually coughing or outright have covid19 symptoms. Right. Thats suddenly something to keep in mind. Lets talk about those homemade masks. We saw kate in her package and someone sewing homemade masks. Are those better than nothing, do you think . I think its safe to say at this this point that those are better than nothing, because remember, one of the mechanisms that this virus is going travel is by respiratory droplets. Meaning youre going to cough up small respiratory blops, a little particle the virus can travel in. Mask could actually trap this. Here is the big thing. A mask at home is going to have two major factors. Filtration, meaning the material that you use, can it actually block things . And the fit. You have to be able to wear this mask all day long. And i stress that because what we want people to not do is theyre wearing a mask and constantly touching it or moving it around you. Are to make sure youre absolutely still, wash your hands and the masks have to be cleaned. Because a dirty mask could be more dangerous than not wearing a mask at all. That is a very good piece of information. Wash those masks if you do make your own mask from home. We want to point out that the cdc has not made official this guidance, that the general public wear masks. They are just considering it. Dr. Patel, thank you as always. We appreciate it. And remember, the n95s have to be for Health Care Workers. These the recommendation here is not going the change. Very good point. Thank you. Yes, keep that in mind. Thanks, dr. Patel. Thank you. A Santa Rosa Police officer became the first California Law enforcement officer to die of coronavirus. Detective Marylou Armer spent 20 years on the force. Wayne freedman has the story. From droneview7 of rr a llie w Heather Farms Community Park in walnut creek is a good snapshot of all the activities you are now not allowed to do. The new extended shelterinplace order now shut downs ballparks, court, course, and dog parks. That means newman and his best friend sydney dont get to play together. There is not as many people, and people do keep their distance. So i dont feel its a huge problem. But whatever needs to be done, im good for. Sydneys owner bill roberts says he knew this was coming, and he understands. He says he and sydney will go for a walkin stead, but he does wonder about those who cant do that. There are some folks who come in the dog park that have walkers and canes, they cant walk the dog around the pond like sue and i do and stuff. Where do they go . The city of walnut creek says everything is closed here, but we did see a pair who hopped the fence and played pickle ball anyway. The game stopped when we showed. Police here in walnut creek tell me they will respond to calls for service, and if they see people congregating, they will break them apart. They say their focus is not on writing citations, but more on educating people, why we need to do this to keep everyone safe. Amy hollyfield, abc7 news. Many Construction Projects around the bay area will remain unfinished for the next month. Those new shelter in place restriction also put a temporary stop to some commercial and residential work, but there are a few exceptions actually. Abc7 news anchor eric thomas live in Contra Costa County to explain. Eric . Well, this is where the Health Department is trying to get, again, more people off the streets and out of their jobs and to stay at home. This effort has now reached into the construction industry. So as you said, businesses that do things like this will probably get a break. Use soap and water for at least 20 seconds. First in english, then in spanish, this work day started with a lecture to make sure everyone on this construction project knew about covid19 best safety practices. We are trying to follow the guidelines as theyre being adjusted, and being adjusted daily. Brown construction out of sacramento is building this 193unit Affordable Housing project in bay point while trying to keep the coronavirus at bay. If we do find somebody that has a cough, common cold symptoms, anything like that, we send them home. Yesterday the contra costa Health Department ordered a halt to all nonessential residential and commercial Construction Projects. Supervisor john joya says that would include an office building, a store, a warehouse. So commercial projects that are not related to sort of an essential business. Exceptions allow certain projects to continue, Like Health Care facilities, Affordable Housing, public works projects, and shelters and temporary housing. The new guidelines mean more people are joining this construction painter in the unemployment line. I feel like im locked up. Being like behind walls and stuff. Because literally everybody out here are all on lockdown. That bay point project we showed you is Affordable Housing, so it is part of the exemption. To be honest, on our way here to walnut creek we saw a couple of different workworking, though t might have been considered nonessential. Supervisor joya says the actual enforcement of the county Health Department guidelines will be left up to the local municipalities, and so far theyve been more interested in using convincing arguments instead of Law Enforcement to do that. So you might see sites like this getting a visit from city official in walnut creek saying hey, please slow down a little bit. Eric thomas, abc7 news. Good to know. Thanks, eric. Of course baseball, like Everything Else is on hold as the shelter in place orders continue. And today abc7 sports anchor Chris Alvarez part of our podcast series about how he is dealing with life without baseball. Chris joining us from his home. How you doing, chris . Im good, larry. We talked to gabe for about 30 minutes today. He was very candid, open and honest. And as we all wait for these games to come back, were itching for sports to come back. Gabe, like many of us, is just getting used to this new normal. The sounds of baseball have been silenced for now. Giants manager gabe kapler was getting fully settled into spring training when everything changed. And at that point, everything seemed fairly normal. We had just come off the field and played in front of thousand of fans in surprise against the rangers. And then things started to unfold very, very quickly. And all of us around the industry started to get focused less on baseball and much more on keeping society healthy. And doing his part following the recommended health guidelines. Part of being responsible here is obviously practicing social distancing, considering ourselves asymptomatic carriers. And i think the best thing that we can possibly do is stay home as muh as possible. Do you think when we get back to the games, are you going to have a greater respect for the game . Is it going to be mean more for you . I think people are going to really appreciate the things that make their life rich . And i think baseball is one of the things both for people in the industry, coaches, manager, players, and definitely for fans. I think when the time comes that were able to get back on theto bit more, and i think were all looking forward to that. I know im looking forward to that, as well as you, larry. What now your health, your safety. This is abc7 news. In anticipation of a surge in covid19 cases in san mateo county, a 250bed federal medical station has been set up, almost overnight really at the san mateo event center. Our cameras were allowed inside. Kris reyes is here with the details. We set this up yesterday. We have about 30 personnel. This type of setup becoming too familiar. Public and event spaces once reserved for gatherings and celebrations, now makeshift hospitals. This is the fourth set up by the National Guard in california just this week. All of our airmen have made all of these beds to be prepared for when theyre needed. You are looking at 250 beds for possible covid19 cases that need care but not necessarily hospitalization. Empty now, but not if the surge that Public Health workers are so afraid of becomes reality. We hope that we never need this facility, but we want to be absolutely prepared. Because when that time comes and you need space you want to visit. Thinking police has changed almost overnight for this neighborhood. Once home to the county fair, it is now a site for coronavirus testing. Covid19 case, and now hospital beds, changes that some residents at least on social media say theyre not always aware of or comfortable with. We have to make sure that we continue to be transparent, make sure that people know that what the event center is for is saving lives. San mateo county is only second to santa clara in the number of covid19 cases in the bay area. But unlike its Public Health officer dr. Sarah cody, dr. Scott murrow has not been as available to the media, sticking mostly to sending out letters to the community on their website. I cant tell the Health Officer what to do, but what i do is i make sure that were using social media, that were reaching out to the press, because people desire this information. Those who are managing this site agree. This media tour a way of being open with the public and also asking for their support. This is a different type of war for us, and that is our generations challenge. In san mateo, kris reyes for abc7 news. Abc7 News Reporter julian gl i havent kind of like kissed or hugged my daughter for three weeks. I go home, shower, go to the room. Its really hard. We dont want to be spreading it ourselves. So we just want to have the right ppes. Their pleas are the same as other nurse, doctors, and Health Care Staff across the country. Im wearing that one mask, and then if i have to go into another room to take air of another bhiesh is a potentially ruleout then im exposing that patient. With what few n95 masks they are provided, they are required to reuse them for days at a time. We have to reuse them for one each day. And the next day and the next day, and the next dayntilgo bad. I think you and i agree that neither one of us is huge on standardized test results as being an indicator of how youre actually going to do when you get to college. Im not sure that this is a huge setback. Already i think people pushing for uc to move away from this. So maybe this will actually get the ball rolling in that direction longterm. There are some kids today going yes as Health Care Workers are swarmed with an influx of coronavirus patient, were seeing new innovative ways to get them the care they needed. One solution is simple but brilliant, Baby Monitors. Kaiser using it at facilities in santa clara county. The idea is being used coasttocoast now. Allows for critical 24 7 personal connection to covid19 patient, but it limits the risky inperson interactions. Of course, you do have some questions about Network Security to address, but nurses say its a simple solution in this crisis to give bedside care without actually being bedside. Pretty smart. Whoever thought of that, great. Yeah. And i think one of the things that we may forget in some cases is that patients really respond, and ive seen this with my motherinlaw who does not have a virus or anything, but when there is interaction, human interaction. And so even if its just coming out of a speaker as opposed to somebody standing right by you, i think its a great solution to a difficult problem where you dont want to have we have to protect our Health Care Workers a this point. We do. Because theyre a line of defense that we cannot lose. If its a bill ebola monitor that solves the problem, lets get Baby Monitors everywhere. Of course there is also the sad aspect too that we need it. But that these people are so alone and isolated. Thats what is so sad about this virus you have to be alone. For sure. Well, everyone is at home look for new hobbies, a lighter topic, looking for new hobbies to pick up. Baking is finding a big resurgence, particularly sour dough from scratch. And now in todays pandemic, google searches for sour dough recipes have skyrocketed. Instagram is flooded with bread making videos. The Washington Post reports that there are flour and yeast shortages across the country. I can attest to that. I wanted to make bread. I saw so many people making bread. I love sour dough bread and our Grocery Store was out. So now its toilet paper, paper towels, flour, yeast. Why sour dough in familiar why sour dough bread . I wasnt going to do sour dough because i was under the impression you needed a specific starter. We can get our hands on some bodine sour dough starter. But of course he cant actually come in because nobody is allowed in. Finally, and this is probably our favorite story of the day. Yes. The latest Public Service announcement to stay at home. But this one comes from the one, the only larry david. Basically want to address the idiots out there hurting old people like me well, not me. Have i nothing to do with it. Ill never see you.
