With so many planes grounded, thousands of americans who are stuck abroad are trying desperately to get back to the u. S. The state Department Says an estimated 9,000 americans have been repatriated from 28 countries, but thousands more remain stranded. Abc news caught up with just a few of them. My mom and i are travel buddies, and every year we make sure to do an International Trip together. This year, we planned on going to antarctica. The captain comes over the speaker multiple times a day. Each time he does that, our stomachs drop, of course. And he lets us know whats going on as far as the pearl princess is concerned. We found out our flights had been canceled, and we were brought to our hotel where we are now quarantined to our room. I landed here on saturday. The next day on a sunday the government announced they were closing borders at midnight, giving americans only a threehour window to leave. And by then all airlines were its now cost us 5,000 in airfare that we havent taken. We currently have flights going out on the 26th. But weve had that same flight going out on the 22nd that was canceled. The embassy is trying its best, but as of now chartered flights are helping americans leave the country to go back home. Im getting nervous because i am diabetic, and so is my husband, and i want to be sure that we have enough pills until we get off the ship. Coming up, the experimental coronavirus treatments here in new york state. Abcs dr. Jennifer ashton tells us what it is and the new possible downside. The World Health Organization is reporting the worldwide spread of the coronavirus is actually accelerating, now surpassing the 300,000 mark. But there are some signs of hope. Abcs Michael Strahan talked with former White House Security adviser tom bossert and dr. Jennifer ashton. President trump saying he wants to reopen the country. Hes talking about weeks, not months. So everyone is wondering, is that realistic . Yeah, michael, so i think everybody shares his frustration and his hope, but what he needs to do is avoid second waves and reinfections. You know, at this stage weve paid a very heavy cost in our economy and in our lives. To lose the benefit of it at this point by not sticking to our guns would be a really devastating decision. Now, can we do it . That requires testing, it requires a more aggressive isolation, and not in peoples homes but somewhere where they can be controlled. And it requires quarantining the people they come into contact with, like dr. Jen is demonstrating by example. Jen, you know, today new york state will begin giving experimental treatments to the most ill patients. What is that treatment . And how might that work . So it is exciting, michael. Theyre starting here in new york. Theyre going to do a trial that takes about a week and hopes to enroll about 300 patients. This is looking at that combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin. Very small studies out of france show there may be some promise there. Heres the flip side, michael. When we hear about a possibly encouraging treatment like this we have to look at it holistically. And the holistic view on this is that hydroxychloroquine is also a medication that is taken by people who have Rheumatoid Arthritis and lupus. Now because of all the excitement about this drug, which has yet to be proven in Clinical Trials, there is a bigtime National Shortage and people who need that drug for their autoimmune conditions cant find it. So we have to balance those two things. And tom, when it comes to testing, the fda has given emergency approval to a test that can be given results in 45 minutes. Could that be a game changer for this whole thing . Not only a game changer but its going to be necessary. Weve moved past the need for testing for individual health care purposes. For the larger Public Health objective for reopening our economy, were going to need tests at a capacity we havent seen yet so we can avoid this uninformed, premature reentry into society and reinfection of our neighbors. Much thanks to our dr. Jen ashton, tom bossert, Michael Strahan. She is currently selfisolating. She says shes feeling fine. Weve needed her as a resource. We need all of our people. Reporting from the west side of manhattan, tom llamas, abc news, new york. Tom, thank you. From new york to california, where leaders are signaling similar news. The governor also says the unemployment system is being overwhelmed. And the mayor of los angeles says his city is six to 12 days behind new york city when it comes to virus cases. After 15 hours of closeddoor bipartisan talks, we learned overnight that a deal has been giant orage elds and many other businesses remain shuttered. Heres abcs terry moran. People forced to stay home are putting a strain on internet services. Weve heard the saying, if the waffle house closes, then you know things are serious. A lot of people down south are determining the severity of the coronavirus outbreak by the waffle house index. The chain known for staying open through hurricanes has closed nearly 400 locations. But more than four times that are still open, but just for takeout. The company says it is still evaluating how it will deal with the outbreak. Now, you touched on it, the es after hurcaneifheas waffle house is open, maybe the hurricane damage wasnt as bad. If it limits its hours, theres a little bit more severe. If it closes, whoo, that means its a pretty bad situation down there. Right, and i think the important point here is just like a lot of restaurants, theyre still in a lot of locations doing takeout. I know a lot of them have really stepped up their game when it comes to takeout because thats how theyre able to get some extra dollars into their business and really survive during this pandemic. Coming up, how realistic is President Trumps hope to reopen the country by easter . One doctor weighs in. First, the dire warning from the governor of louisiana. President trump has declared a disaster in louisiana due to coronavirus cases spreading there faster than any other state. The governor says the state will exceed its capacity to care for virus patients by the end of next week. More than half of Emergency Personnel in new orleans are under quarantine. In virginia, Liberty University is bucking the trend during this outbreak and welcoming students back to campus. Of course not everyone is happy about it. Abcs Kimberly Brooks joins us now with details. Reporter good morning, kenneth and mona. Thats right, a lot of mixed feelings on this decision. State officials are calling it an unnecessary risk, but the school says its reasons are justified. Colleges across the country have been telling students to close up shop, but this morning a different decision by the faithbased Liberty University in lynchburg, virginia. With spring break now over, its reopening its doors in the middle of the deadly outbreak. The school now welcoming thousands of students back to campus. The schools president , Jerry Falwell jr. , says there was no other choice. We have about 750 International Students who have no alternative. They couldnt go back to their countries. And we have a lot of students who really have nowhere else to go but their dorm rooms. Weve taken all the precautionary measures. Reporter one student tweeting, so proud to call liberty u my home, the unnecessary rage against libertys administration in handling covid19 is unjustified. But lynchburgs mayor feels otherwise, slamming the schools decision. I believe it was a reckless decision to decide to allow all students back on campus. We would have preferred that it be closed. Reporter still, falwell says hes playing by the rules by providing online classes and limiting inperson labs to 10 students at a time. Were operating like every other college in the state of virginia, abiding by all the governors orders to the letter of the law. Reporter so guys, again, when we talk about the spread, as you said earlier, kenneth, in some areas nearly half of those infected are young people between 18 to 49. And in other university news, we learned yesterday that harvards president and his wife have tested positive. Kenneth, mona . I actually used to live and work in lynchburg, virginia. It takes up a big chunk of the city, the campus spreads out about 7,000 acres. And only 15,000 students live on campus, but they have over 100,000 students that are online. So if theres any university that has the capability of moving instruction to online, it is Liberty University, where predominantly most of their students are already online. But the president there, whos also Jerry Falwell, whos a staunch trump supporter, made an interesting point. They do have a Significant International student body as well that live on campus, and so he does say that they also have an old hotel where they plan to put any students that do fall ill. But again, a lot of the local Health Experts and a lot of the local government officials there saying that its not the best move. Yeah, definitely. We hear both sides of that story right there. Coming up next half hour, finding love while still social distancing. But first, the promising new development in the search for a treatment. One doctor weighs in. One doctor weighs in. Were back with russian president Vladimir Putin in a hazmat suit as he got a virus update at a hospital in moscow. Russia has reported less than 500 virus cases and no deaths. The hospitals head doctor told putin that that could change quickly as the number of tests being done increases. Back here at home, were hearing about a potential new treatment for covid19 set to be tested here in new york. It comes as President Trump expresses that he wishes to reopen the country by easter. I sat down earlier with pediatrician dr. Patel. Now President Trump is saying he wants to reopen america, or at least part of it, at least by easter. Is that even realistic . We dont have the data to say it is. And i understand that people are eager to get back to work. People want their lives back. But honestly, we dont know that the cases havent plateaued yet. And you know, we look overseas. We look at china, south korea. Were still waiting to see if theyre going to have rebound transmission, meaning a surge in cases when they go back to their normal lives. So as of right now, because cases are still climbing, its tough to say. I think theres a clear reason why so many other people are calling for an additional two weeks of sheltering in place. Whats your reaction to President Trumps remarks that the lockdown can cause more deaths than the coronavirus itself if we continue this way . I think we can all agree that the Economic Impact is scary. But like many people have said, we can rebuild the economy. Sadly, we cant get back the lives that may be lost. And we can actually prevent those. So when i hear people talk about wanting to rebuild the economy, i want to make sure that were all thinking about our hospital max capacity and where doctors and nurses are at on the frontline and what the situation actually looks like when it comes to ventilators, hospital beds, personal protective equipment, the things that are actually happening in the pu health sector. We have two differing variables, the economy and health care. We need to make sure both are involved in the conversation and not just the economy. And theres another new development. New york will be the first state to test whether blood from people who have recovered from the coronavirus can be used to help other patients recover. It sounds very promising. Can you tell us how this would work, and are you yourself hopeful . Any scientific innovation related to treatment or preventing or prophylaxis, im always going to be optimistic. The Science Behind using serum or using part of the blood means, if someone recovers from this sarscov2 they should have antibodies which we then would be able to use to immunize somebody else. The Science Behind this is cool, for lack of a better word, and it could theoretically work. We just need to put it into more trials, really research it and see if this is something viable. In theory this is a great idea, but it also does need testing, it needs resources, and you need a pool of people who would be able to do this. And theres been a lot of questions about the symptoms related to coronavirus. What are you hearing about these coronavirus symptoms . Theres been a lot of variability in how this illness presents itself. Were seeing some people get very, very sick quickly, but some other patients are saying they havent seen symptoms at all, theyre not showing any symptoms, some are saying that it comes in two waves. Theres a lot of different accounts of this. What are you seeing . I think you just nailed it. I think the scary part is that the symptoms vary. Traditionally, people want to say, hey, youre going to have a fever, a dry cough, feeling fatigue. Truth of the matter is, and weve seen this, asymptomatic people, people who have no symptomsib for a very large amount of the transmission. So the real question should be, should people just assume that theyre contagious . For the large part, yes. Right now if you have any symptoms, you should isolate yourself as if you do have sarscov2. I asked about more rural areas, maybe theyre able to open in time for easter. He said this virus does not respect shelter in place restrictions and it could easily travel by air or car. So you heard him there, selfquarantining is the best option we have. Good information from him. Coming up, the new innovative way to sanitize your shopping cart. Shopping cart. S sod hyed. Gives my skin an extra boost of life. Its full of energy. It finally matches me. Im denise bidot, and my skin is powerful. And i can face anything with my olay. They had a pulley system that dumps those things right into just a bucket full of Hand Sanitizer. Have we done human testing yet on this . You know what i would dip people in this. I think that it works. Theyre just dipping them in there. You know how many people go around touching these after you and before you . Right. And this time, whoo. And what a great timeline this would be. Reporter and on capitol hill lawmakers reach a deal on a 2 trillion bill to rescue an economy in freefall, both sides hopeful, and the markets responding to their optimism.
