A rescue helicopter pulling two missing hikers to found alive in a steep ravine. County search and rescue teams along with a search dog found the couple inside dense brush. They were like, thank god you found us. Were so happy. They are doing okay. They were suffering from slight hypo thermia. The couple was found three to four miles from the house they were renting. They had been missing since valentines day. They left for a hike on valentines. They got lost in the dark. The reason they are most likely alive is because they were drinking from a puddle that they found near where they were located. Reporter sheriffs Officials Say ian injured himself in a fall which likely prevented the couple from walking out. Neighbors had feared the worst. But dozens of dedicated search and rescue personnel never gave up, trying to find carol and ian. Speaking with a search manager that we have that was also involved in the fire service and also speaking with the family, this is a miracle. Reporter yeah. A miracle is right. Some of the searchers say the brush was so dense they actually had to crawl in. I spoke with the couples son by phone just a short time ago. He says this is the best news ever and is so grateful to those rescue teams. Well, the couple is recovering from the hospital tonight. Lauren martinez spoke with the family and she joins us now with how theyre feeling. It must be great. They are. The family says they are completely overwhelmed. They drank out of a puddle for water and ate plants in order to sustain themselves. They say this is the best possible ending. I hope that nobody watching this ever understands how happy i am today. Sons feared the worst after rescue missions by land and sea turned into Recovery Efforts for their parents. Family and Officials Say it was thanks to the couples background in the outdoors that helped them survive. His mom is a mushroom hunter. My dad, they know how to find things and eat. So they were eating some part of a fern. The couple used their skills in nature, drank from a puddle for water and had a will to survive. My dad said, you know, i lost a shoe and then i lost the other shoe and i kept walking in my socks. Then i got tired of walking in my socks so i was walking barefoot for a while. Hes 77 years old. Our parents are scratched up a little bit. Like and thats minimalizing it. Theyre probably dehydrated. But for the most part theyre like in reasonably good health. On behalf of the family, they are grateful for the hundreds of volunteers. Three of them got poison oak just grinding through the thick to find people they dont even know. Right . And ultimately did. And were just overwhelmed. It was a pair of volunteers from the marine search and rescue team and a dog who found carol and ian. Their sons say they should be out of the hospital as soon as tomorrow. Back to you. Now, a lot of the credit for the rescue is going to the volunteers who were out searching every day. It was a pair from the search and rescue team that found the couple. Hundreds of people were out every single day spending up to 12 hours searching. It was primarily teams of volunteers out on the trails wandering through the brush. This morning the Sheriffs Office saluted the teams, and we heard from one of the volunteers that found the couple. I dont think think would have made it without this group of people you see behind me. Halfway up we hear voices. First we thought it was another team. We looked at each other, and were like, thats them. It took a long time to move a short distance because it was so thick. Enable push alerts from the app. Friends and family of a woman who died one year ago today came together for a memorial. 22yearold was walking her dog when one of the bluffs gave way, burying her under a mountain of dirt. Her remains were found 33 days later. Today family and friends left flowers at the spot where she died. We realized it was someplace she loved because it is the ocean. It is the outdoors. Its a dog park. We just want to express our love for all those who helped in her recovery. And i know that there were so many people on the beach a year ago. The family says they hope to make the trip in honor of her an annual tradition. Tragedy struck tonight in new orleans. A pedestrian was hit by a parade float. The parade was canceled after float 13 according to or organizers. It has over the top lighting that sometimes can be a city block long. City officials responded to the tragedy by banning all tandem floats. And this is a tandem float that is involved, a second fatality this season. I do have my concerns. I think we have to do our Due Diligence in making sure this is a safe carnival for everyone. On wednesday a woman was run over and killed by another float. That fatality also involved a tandem float. A search is on for the driver that killed a Good Samaritan in a hitandrun. Jose Garcia Aguilar stopped to help the driver that crashed in a median and was hit by two other cars. His family is begging for the driver that hit him to come forward. He has a sixyearold child with his partner. She says aguilar liked to help people. The family has set up a gofundme page. Investigators are looking for that driver, believed to be in a blue or green box shaped suv. Now on to nevada and the race to see who will take on President Trump in november.
