escaped high winds, knocking out electric service to thousands. we're not out of the woods yet. the wind advisory has been extended. good evening. i'm eric thomas. >> let's begin wiresidents have been without power for hours. >> reporter: this entire neighborhood is without power tonight. behind me you can see the massive trees in the middle higher avenue. firefighters saying that he barely missed their home. one after the other, 12 homes and at least 30 residents on higher avenue in caster valley were evacuated. >> the wind picked up and it was kind of scary how fast the wind picked up. >> several trees knocked off by strong winds. one of the branches landing on top of this car and trapping the driver inside. ran to pick up her parents. >> when they called me, i don't think they're scared but it just kind of shook. >> reporter: alameda county firefighters began to receive calls from this neighborhood. around 3:50 p.m. when they arrived, they found this, approximately 15 large trees that collapsed on to the road and nine power lines threatening the safety of many on higher avenue. >> but we are concerned with homes adjacent to the fallen eucalyptus because there are still several tall hundred foot plus trees to the rear of the structure. >> reporter: as the winds picked up, another tree fell and damaged a water pipe on this road! and what's happening now is with that water, domestic water supply break, it's undermining the soil, which is going to weaken the eucalyptus. >> evacuations continued. >> i think the police recommend them to leave the house just in case of fires. >> pg&e secured the downed power lines as alameda firefighters drove to multiple calls around the area. >> when wires would come down, they would start a small vegetation fire, and we had, at one point, we probably had 20 calls back logged with companies unable to respond because everybody was busy. >> reporter: the red cross is helping those residents and alameda county fire said they received approximately 300 calls in relation to this wind event and confirmed this neighborhood won't get their power back until tomorrow. in caster valley, abc 7 news. the weather forced golden gate transit to cancel all ferry service for a time. alcatraz cruz has suspended ferries as well. that extension of the wind advisory means we're going to stick with these winds another day. tonight, the winds are active in our hills. look at the gusts. diablo, 51 miles per hourment oakla -- hour. closer to the surface, a little bit better, but still half-moon bay, fairfield, we're seeing spots where the winds are active over 20 miles per hour. future weather. tomorrow morning, especially in the north bay and in the east bay, early commuters, you're going to feel those winds once again, 20 to 30 miles per hour. perhaps a bit of a break, but watch what happens tomorrow evening. those winds come right back, racing through the bay area, gusting well over 30 miles per hour at times. so the wind advisory has some changes to this. san francisco and the coast, your advisory will expire tomorrow morning. however, for the east bay hills, the north bay mountains and the santa cruz mountains has now been extended until tuesday morning, so you have more than 24 hours still left of these winds. we'll have the numbers and wac you through in a few minutes. the wind knocked down power lines and utility poles around the bay area. this utility pole came down in downtown sonoma. at one point, more than 300,000 pg&e customers lost power. green means an outage affecting less than 50 people. red more than 5,000 people. 29,000 bay area customers still don't have power. 20 of them in the east bay, the hardest hit areas. not all of these outages were necessarily caused by the winds. >> the winds today caused issues for residents in one of san francisco's most well known high-rises and in oakland, residents were dodging trees and power lines outside their home. cornell bernard has the story. >> and i just saw like shards of glass falling out of the sky. >> nick kudo lives on the 22nd floor. he didn't know what was happening when he saw shattered glass outside his kitchen window. >> i see a bunch of kids running away from the area. >> reporter: police say a window on the 41st floor of the tower may have been blown out by strong gusty wind. we saw someone inside the unit appearing to hold what was left of the window in place. the fire department says no one was injured. streets around the building were closed as a precaution. nick says homeowners were warned to keep their windows shut. >> i know they sent out an e-mail yesterday to have everyone close their windows due to potential strong wind. >> reporter: the gusty winds caught me and everyone else by surprise. in fact, very hard to walk. the oakland fire department was dealing with popping transformers and much more. this 100 foot tree fell near clairewood and harbor drives. it brought down power lines. >> we have no power now and looks like we're not going to have power for a while. >> reporter: the oakland fire department responded to more than a dozen fallen trees like this one that crushed a mini. >> i was about to leave and i saw that it's falling and that's it. >> reporter: maybe it's your lucky day. >> yep. >> reporter: fences were toppled in the east bay, and this wire caused a traffic nightmare for a time. and the oakland zoo tweeted it closed for a day, for safety reasons. >> reporter: it's the strongest wind that i can recall the last 25 years. >> a day to remember, especially if you were on the road or on the bay. cornell bernard, abc 7 news. >> or on the bridges, the weather today had an impact on flights. >> live at sfo with more. >> reporter: good evening, usually the problem at sfo is the fog. tday it was the wind. in fact, some arriving flights were forced to change their flight pattern. flights coming over hillsboro and directly over the cars on highway 101. that's how windy it was. this arrival approach meant runway capacity took a hit. 40% of arriving and departing flights at sfo were delayed or cancelled, some diverted to san jose or oakland airports but oakland advisory has been extended for some until tuesday morning. live doppler 7 tonight showing you it is a dry scan. that front that moved through that kicked up our winds today, unfortunately did not bring us any rain. so tonight we'll take you to the bay bridge toll plaza, a live look, you look on the right side of your screen, the flags, they are flapping in the wind. the wind is still very active tonight in the east bay, certainly took the brunt of the wind today. look at oakland, a peak wind gust earlier today of 54 miles per hour. livermore, 53 miles per hour. half-moon bay along the coast at 50 miles per hour. sfo, issues with cancellations and flights, the winds gusting over 70 miles per hour. across the entire bay area it was an incredibly windy end to the weekend. in our hills, we are seeing very active winds out of the north, northeast. it's that dry wind. probably knows your skin is a little chapped this weekend 42 at mount diablo. the winds will continue to be active over the next 24 hours. close to the surface, we're seeing a bit better news. winds anywhere from 15 to 25 miles per hour in our breeziest spots and tomorrow it's another breezy day across the region. one side effect of the winds this time of year, it keeps your temperature elevated at night. current numbers, 60 degrees in oakland and san francisco, 65 in san jose. it will be a mild night and breezy night across the region. the changes to the wind advisory, first, for san francisco and along the coastline, the wind advisory will expire tomorrow morning, however, for the north bay mountains, the east bay hills and the diablo range, the wind advisory has now been extended until tuesday morning. it's supposed to expire tomorrow morning. now it's extended a full day because the winds are not up in the higher elevation. first thing tomorrow morning, you can see at 8:00 a.m. still in the north bay and east bay especially, we're seeing the winds really active, over 20 miles per hour. we'll likely see a bit of a lull in the afternoon, at 2:00 p.m., not as busy. as the sun goes down, the winds pick up once again. by 10:00 p.m. monday, the winds are very gusty, especially in the north bay and the east bay, the wind advisory has been extended. watch what happens tuesday afternoon. the winds are going to let up as the wind advisory is allowed to expire. there's a breezy to windy night temperatures pretty much in the 40s across the board. tomorrow with that breeze it's a little bit of a warmer day under sunny skies, upper 60s to near 70 degrees. and our warmest spot, the, the,e accuweather seven-day forecast, still breezy tomorrow, the wind advisory is cancelled for everybody on tuesday, and our temperatures warm a bit midweek around here. cool off for valentine's
