Their main argument, they say the articles of impeachment are constitutionally and legally invalid be dent trump of a specific crime, and they call the impeachment, quote, a dangerous attack on the right of the American People to freely choose their president. His new legal team, a cast of washington whos who and tv personalities, including former independent counsel ken starr and harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz who already seemed to distance himself from the defense of the president. They say its very clear the president did nothing wrong, and youre not willing to endorse that statement . I did not read that brief or sign that brief. Thats not part of my mandate. My mandate is to present the constitutional argument, and if the constitutional argument succeeds, we dont reach that issue because you cant charge a president with impeachable conduct if it doesnt fit within the criteria for the constitution. Reporter democrats unveiling their strategy too, saying that during the now infamous phone call with ukraine, President Trump asked a Foreign Government to interfere in the race for 2020 by investigating his political rival. They say he then obstructed congress in what is, quote, part of the ongoing pattern of misconduct for which the president is unrepentant, and that President Trumps conduct is the framers Worst Nightmare writing, he must be removed from office. The facts arent seriously contested. Reporter well, heres the facts the odds are not in democrats favor, and the republicancontrolled senate. They need four republicans to break ranks. George, you know this, the white house and republicans have made it very clear they want this trial over very quickly. They want it wrapped up by the president s state of the union on february 4th. Thats their hope and thats what were hearing from republican senators who have talked to Mitch Mcconnell about the rules, and the democrats havent seen the rules yet which means tomorrow will be a huge fight. The democrats are pushing really hard for this given the new evidence that has come out in these recent days. How long these days are going to last. Some are suggesting we could be talking about, george, 12hour days that go until 2 00 or 3 00 in the morning, and tomorrow as you said, this could be very heavy on process, very light on substance, a lot of arguing about the rules to come. And on a related front, cecilia, yesterday, when i was talking to chairman adam schiff who is the house lead manager and the chairman of the house intelligence committee, he confirmed and said that the Intelligence Community is not coming forward to brief the public and the congress on Global Security threats because theyre afraid of contradicting President Trump. Hes blaming the cia and the National Security agencies saying theyre withholding information about ukraine, as you said, out of the fear of angering the president. He said this is information that the senators could use or need to hear during the trial, and the republicans are saying the democrats dont have the proof and that they already have what they need for tomorrow. The suspect killing two officers before igniting a massive blaze responsible for engulfing neighboring homes, his whole house and potentially ending his life. When officers arrived on the scene, the suspect opened fire with what they believe was an ar15 style rifle, shooting at least three officers, killing t finest. Reporter the violence reportedly sparked when the suspect, identified as 69yearold jerry hanel was being served with an eviction notice. Hanel allegedly stabbed his landlord when she tried to evict him, later opening fire on his responding officers. They sounded like pistol shots. I think we saw prince harry at the most open we have ever seen him last night. Its clear this is not how he wanted things to go. He defended his wife meghan saying shes the same woman he fell in love with. He said, when they were married, they were excited and ready to serve. How things have changed. Before i begin, i must say that i can only imagine what you may have heard or perhaps read over the past few weeks. So i want you to hear the truth from me, as much as i can share, not as a prince or a duke, but as harry. Reporter overnight, a candid prince harry speaking out for the first time about his decision to step back as a Senior Member of the royal family. The decision that i have made for my wife and i to step back is not one i made lightly. It was so many months of talks after so many years of challenges. And i know i havent always gotten it right, but as far as this goes, there was really no other option. Reporter well, im not subject to exactly what was laid before the Royal Household and the queens representatives, but i know when he says he wanted to support the queen, and the commonwealth and carry on with his role in the armed forces, those are three areas he felt, and presumably meghan did too that they could run coconcomitant with Everything Else that hes got planned. But, you know, its very difficult. This is a role thats rather like working in the civil service. If you are in the royal family, you cant be seen to be benefitting from private income and still be a beneficiary of the royal status. So thats been the difficulty and im afraid it was necessary for the queen and her advisers to draw the line at that. And alastair, he said a lot and he seemed to be pouring his heart out, and it seemed to be heartfelt. But how are his comments now being received there . Reporter well, i think everyone has followed the life of prince harry and harry as we all call him in due course, all of his life, since he was born. I mean, i remember when he was born. I saw him going through the army and i think that when his mother died, i think there was a great sense of anguish for him. And i think that continues because people feel throughout the United Kingdom a great warmth towards this young man, and his desire to get his marriage sorted out and to wish him well. But, you know, the monarchy is not something you can just dip into and dip out of. And i know it must have seemed possible to him that he could, but its been pointed out that because the monarchy must be kept clear of the danger of being seen to benefit for any of its members from any financial advantage that they might get from being a royal, hes had to make these rather difficult decisions and hes gone. Theyve decided theyre going to review this arrangement after a year. So is there any going back . Reporter oh, yes. I think that was the intent that the queen has ensured. She has expressed everything about these announcements in very warm, grandmotherly terms and, you know, youre born royal. Its a rank. Its not a title. A title is being duke of sussex, and i think what the queen will always want to make sure is that if there is ever a need or it is sensible for the royal family and harry wants to, he should be able to come back and pick up his rank. He was born with it, and then move on from there, but right now we know harry and meghan have got plans. Theyre going to do them, and i think the United Kingdom and the monarchy have made it clear they wish them well within the constraints that have been set. Fascinating. Alastair, thanks very much. Its the new fallout from Oprah Winfreys announcement that shes pulling out as executive producer for the documentary, on the record, which focuses on Sexual Misconduct allegations against hiphop mogul Russell Simmons. Lets go to adrienne. Good morning to all of you. Oprah now responding to claims that she was pressured by simmons, but oprah says no one intimidated her. She thinks more work needs to be done to shine light on what the victims went through, and that is why she stepped aside. Her team reiterating that the goal is to get right when it comes to these allegations. Reporter Oprah Winfrey bowing out as executive producer chronicling the of women with Sexual Harassment allegati allegations and in some cases assault allegations against hiphop mogul Russell Simmons. Titled on the record for apple tv plus, centered around drew dickson who told the times in 2017 a woman was assaulted while dickson was an executive. Oprah believes the women, but she wants to get it right with no rush to release the documentary. It was reported that simmons pressured her, but it was her own concerns, including inconsistency with allegations and not simmons protest that led her to ultimately back out. Initially in december, simmons who has not been charged with any crime and has denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex took to instagram addressing oprah saying, quote, its troubling you choose to single me out in your documentary. I have already admitted to being a playboy, more appropriately titled today womanizers, sleeping with and putting myself in more compromising situations than almost any man i know, so many that some could reinterpret or reimagine a different recollection of the same experiences. Over the weekend, i had the opportunity to sit down with Ozzy Osbourne. Hes been dealing with a very Difficult Health battle after a terrible fall last february. It forced him to postpone his world tour and recover at home. Well bring you the interview tomorrow morning, but i wanted to share a sneak peek this morning as ozzy talks about the moment he says everything changed. Is there a reason why you waited so long to share . It wasnt really a problem for a long while ago. I never know its any different. Sharon said before, are you okay . You seem different, and when i had the fall, it was pitch black. I went to the bathroom. I fell and i just fell and landed like a slam on the floor. I remember lying there thinking, well, youve done it now. Really calm. I should get an ambulance. After that, it was all downhill. But youre on the mend. Its taking its time though. Its nearly a year. Next month it will be a year. The worst, longest, most painful, miserable year of my life. 2019 was that way for him, and there have been many headlines recently saying he was on his deathbed and things like that, and thats part of why he wanted to reveal which we will tomorrow, what he has been dealing with. The banner headline on this is that association as we say all the time does not equal cause and effect, and over the last, you know, decade or more as weve seen the rise in Digital Technology use across a adolescents and amongst the rise of mental illness, a lot people where it boils down to this equals this. Th this study is a metaanalysis study a study. Exactly. A compilation, and a deep dive into what we know, actually finds that a lot of them were done on methodology that you cant say that that technology is causing mental illness, particularly depression, and anxiety. A lot of the studies were done in adults and extrapolated to teenagers. A lot of the studies looked at the hours of screen time and didnt look at how that screen time was used, didnt look at othe. Is a powerful reminder. The verdict is not in. We cant say that one equals the other. What are the upsides of the technology . The psychologist who did this study and others by the way are quick to point out we hear a lot about the negatives. There are a lot of potential positives, particularly in this age group. It can be important in fostering social connections amongst teens and others. It can engage them on a social and intellectual level. We cant forget you can actually learn things from social media and Digital Technology, and particularly in this age group, it can be a powerful means of support, and again, theyre not all created equally. A teenager listening to a ted talk is not necessarily the same as a teenager flipping through social media likes or dislikes. Parents are still going to be concerned about screen title. What should they know . You and i are both parents. So its on our radar. According to other experts, theyre emphasizing the facts that behavior oftentimes mirrors what theyre experiencing offline. Connect the dots. You should know what your teenager is doing online, just like we want to know what our kids are doing off line. And if you have any concerns about this because this is an evolving field, you want to discuss this. Not only with your teenager, but School Guidance counsellors, their pediatrician, other people that are involved in your teenagers world because again, its not as simple as all bad or all good. Kings dream for all mankind. The greatness of a nation in the future depends on the vision and actions of our citizens in the present. Dr. King once said injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. I believe the best of us comes out when we work collectively as a team. I dont believe that dr. King would have imagined that this would be our america in 2020. We need to stop letting Political Parties divide us as a nation. There is too Much Division in america. White against black, rich against the poor, men against women. Part of dr. Kings vision would be for all of us to get along and Work Together. He wasnt afraid to, like, show that things were wrong. Weve come a long way, but we still have some work to do. Lets use the symphony as our example and truly embrace the unique instruments that create harmony. We must do it, one home at a time, one community at a time and one day at a time. There is only one race, the human race. Today, my vision for america in 2020 is still the same. We are honoring the legacy of dr. Martin luther king jr. This morning, and our next guest is overcoming obstacles and helping others. So many others. A few years ago 13yearold sidney keys created a book club to inspire other africanamerican boys to read and learn their history. Were going to meet him in just a moment, but first take a look at how the program has grown. Books n bros currently has over 250 bros all over the states and even one bro in canada. What i really enjoyed is finding a book that interested me and i think will interest a lot of other people. Entrepreneurship is hard. We dont provide literacy much to boys. Its more fulfillment emotionally than financially. Basically what happened in the book one, we were sbused to congressman lewis, and Martin Luther king began the peaceful protest because they sought justice in their community. I have so much respect to those boys who joined this club and they are being part of a revolution showing children of color that not only is it okay to read and its necessary to read, its fun to read. In late march, 1961 and for these young people to do this, its beautiful. We all have a fun time, and we get to go in a whole different world of reading. Theres a lot of blood, sweat and tears that goes into books n bros. Books n bros is so crucial. It just benefits so many people that it keeps me going. And sidney and his mom winnie are here now joining us in studio. [ cheers and applause ] hey, sidney. Wonderful. You know, in so many ways you emulate dr. King. He overcame so many struggles in hopes of helping others. You had a struggle with stuttering and you were bullied and you turned that around into a successful program. Tell us how you went about doing that. I had a bad stutter in Elementary School and i would get teased for it and i used to love to read, and that was my escape to my stutter because in my head i was able to visualize things without stuttering and being able to play out the events clearly and reading was kind of like an escape for me. So i wanted to start Something Like books n bros so that i could talk to other people and especially boys, like, about books that i love to read because that was, like, a brotherhood that i loved. Its spread all across your community. Okay. How proud are you . Im extremely proud. I am so proud of sidney. Hes grown into such a leader over the last few years. How have you seen him grow . Definitely as a speaker, as a leader. I remember the first time we had a meetup of seven boys and we grew from seven boys to 30 boys and he was so scared to talk in front of 30 people, and since then he has spoke the a group of over 3,000 people. He continuously amazes me. I bet. Marvels hero project, it was just an disney plus which takes young men like this, young kids around the country and turns them into superheroes. They did that for you. They did that for him. You were super sidney, with a wonderful series. What was it like . What did your friends say . I guess it was like i always wanted to read books that had characters that look like me, but i never thought that i would see a comic book with me in it. So its just something that, like, really awesome. Especially because, like, its the reaction of all my friends and teachers. Theyll call me my superhero, like, hi the spectacular sidney. Spectacular sidney . Yeah. Its awesome and surreal seeing myself as a marvel superhero. If you havent seen it, check it out on disney plus. It really is something. [ applause ] dare i say, whats next . I guess whats next is getting books n bros in schools across america. We dont want transportation to be an issue with having that physical brotherhood and bond. We wanted to get books n bros into schools across the states. Also with transportation we also realized that we didnt want financial hindrances to be an issue so we noticed with a lot of the families that need books n bros, they cant afford to be apart of the book club. So i am the science correspondent on the show so i get to go out into the streets and we got to play basketball with some really cool basketball players and they were actually really doing some mind over matter experiments and it went to show that, you know, the physicality is important, but so much of athleticism is the head space that you are in. Huh. Now what are they doing there . What was the head space . What was that about . So they were trying to expand their vertical reach, and we were training with some brain stimulation. And that worked . It did. I need to use my brain here a little more and i would get a lot further in life. Very important to use your brain. I could have used you in my career about 15 years ago. This school was very necessary because it helps parents in this community and grandparents work so they can have jobs.
