That the strike he ordered, quote, saved a lot of lives. As the president and his administration is now pressed, where is the evidence they spoke of before of an imminent attack . Jon karl is standing by live at the white house. And all of this playing out tonight at those two bases in iraq housing the u. S. Military. Just hours before it all happened, iraqs Prime Minister signaling he wanted u. S. Troops out. Pointing to a letter from the u. S. Military in the last 24 hours, saying the u. S. Was, in fact, leaving iraq. Tonight, President Trump saying that is not the case, the pentagon saying the letter was a mistake. Team coverage of the crisis with iran, a special edition of world news tonight begins now. Good evening as we come on the air in the west tonight with breaking news in the escalating crisis with iran. Tonight, u. S. Officials confirming iran has fired more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles targeting the u. S. Military. The missiles fired from inside iran, aimed at u. S. Military facilities in iraq. At least two sites, including the Asad Air Base and an air base in erbil. Iran state television airing this, saying these are some of 2 iranian missiles. Iranian tv calling this a revenge operation, after President Trump ordered the deadly drone strike on irans top general. The missiles fired tonight part of what iran is calling operation martyr soleimani. We have learned one of the bases, Asad Air Base in western iraq. President trump and the first lady visited a little more than a year ago, in december of 2018. President trump is being briefed at this hour, meeting with his National Security team in the situation room. And it was just hours before in the white house, the president forcefully defended his order to carry out that Deadly Strike that killed general qassem soleimani, saying the iranian general was planning a, quote, very big attack and that the Deadly Strike, quote, saved a lot of lives. But the president did not reveal any evidence about the imminent attack and the president pointed to early on as just his case for the u. S. Strike, saying congress would be briefed. Tonight, very little on any potential casualties or where the missiles landed. But it does come as more u. S. Troops have landed in the lee jom amid this escalating conflict. Iran has vowed revenge. The foreign minister telling our Martha Raddatz just today that the u. S. Will pay for what iran called its act of war. So, lets get right to our senior foreign correspondent, ian pannell, live in iraq tonight, not far from one of the sites targeted tonight. What are you learning about any potential casualties . Reporter yeah, david, a Senior Administration official tells abc news that we are not seeing any american casualties at this moment, although the situation remains fluid and assessment is still ongoing. They are also saying that a number of those iranian missiles that were, quote, targeted at the base, failed to hit their target. Tonight, the video from Iranian State tv purporting to show missiles targeting the ain al Asad Air Base in iraq. In the video, you see three lights moving across the sky. Then two more appear to streak towards the base, leaving a trail of smoke. Then, another apparent launch. A steady stream lighting up the sky. The department of defense confirming iran launched more than a dozen Ballistic Missiles. In a statement, saying, its clear that these missiles were launched from iran and targeted at least two Iraqi Military bases hosting u. S. Military and Coalition Personnel at al asad and erbil. Iranian state tv describing the attacks as a revenge operation to the u. S. Drone strike that killed general qassem soleiman. , considered by some in the u. S. Administration to be an immediate threat. Tonight, an iranian official posting a tweet of the iranian flag, mimicking President Trump who tweeted the American Flag directly after killing soleimani. The u. S. iran conflict playing out on iraqi soil. Tonights attacks come just hours after iraqs Prime Minister called for u. S. Troops to leave his country. The Iraqi Parliament has already voted to remove American Military forces, although its nonbinding. Iraq now caught in the middle of this spiraling crisis between iran and america. So, lets get right back to ian, live in iraq tonight. And you were on the air with us earlier tonight, you heard some of those strikes not far from where you and the team are right now. And obviously one of the two targets, the Erbil Airport and the base there. What are your sources telling you about what played out not far from where you are tonight . Reporter yeah, thats right, david. We heard three explosions in total, two were clustered together, a third one came slightly later on. What were hearing from the Kurdish Regional government here in iraq is that the target was the Erbil International airport. We know some u. S. Troops are based there. Were told that two missiles were intercepted, a third missed a target and landed in open ground. Pictures going around online, unverified at the moment, appear to show a missile on the ground. Shows how fluid and dangerous the situation here is in northern iraq. David . All right, ian pannell leading us off tonight. And just to add to what ian said there, we know hundreds of u. S. Troops are normally stationed in erbil, thousands at the other base at asad base, in fact, and in iran tonight, they were quick to take responsibility for the attack. They vowed revenge. The Iranian Foreign minister, when asked by our Martha Raddatz just today if he was worried about an allout war, he said that depended on the u. S. Response. So, lets get right to martha, live in tehran for us again tonight. And martha, in your interview, the Iranian Foreign minister said it would be iran and not one of their proxies behind any attack that was coming and thats what played out tonight. Reporter thats exactly what played out, and the iranians immediately took credit for this. They are calling this a great victory against the great satan. Reporter those iranian rockets raining down tonight on American Forces in iraq. Come hours after calls for revenge rose up the funeral of general qassem soleimani. The Iranian Revolutionary guard now calling tonights rocket attacks operation martyr soleimani, warning the arrogant american regime that any new invasions and aggressions will result in more painful and pounding responses. Earlier today, iranian media quoted a top security official saying iran has 13 revenge scenarios, any of which would be a historic nightmare for america. I spoke with irans foreign minister, javad zarif, just hours before the attack. Are you concerned that a strong response from iran will end in an allout war . That depends on the United States. The United States took an act of war against iran. It will have to be prepared for the consequences. Reporter the foreign minister with a warning to the United States arrogance and ignorance when combined . Its disaster. And this is whats happening in the United States. Arrogance and ignorance. Martha raddatz with that interview just hours before all of this played out. And so, lets get back to martha tonight. And martha, you asked if they were prepared for allout war, but did you get any sense what they expect in response from the u. S. Now that this has happened . Reporter well, david, i think they are standing by. They say they are ready for any kind of response, but i absolutely do not get the sense that the iranis want an allout conflict anymore than the u. S. Does. David . Martha raddatz with us again tonight from tehran. Martha, our thanks to you, as well. And tonight, President Trump has been briefed. He is meeting with his National Security team. So, what is next . Will the u. S. Respond . Abcs chief White House Correspondent live at the white house tonight. And jon, what have you learned . Reporter were told the president has been briefed by his top National Security advisers including the secretary of state and the secretary of defense here at the white house in the situation room. Irans attack tonight hit the al Asad Air Base in western iraq, a place the president himself visited just over a year ago. Irans move comes just hours after the president defended his decision to order the drone strike that killed general kass qassem soleimani. The administration is under mounting pressure to present evidence that soleimani posed an imminent threat. What can you tell us about what you knew prior to ordering the attack . Well, number one, i knew the past, his past was horrible. He was a terrorist. They were planning something, and youre going to be hearing about it or at least various people in congress are going to be hearing about it tomorrow. We had tremendous information. Weve been following him for a long time. And we followed his path for those three days, and they were not good stops. We didnt like where he was stopping. They were not good stops. We saved a lot of lives. Reporter but the president also suggested soleimani was killed in part to retaliate for an earlier attack that killed an american contractor. Ours was an attack based on what they did. We werent the first one out. Is the u. S. Prepared for an iranian attack . Were prepared. Were totally prepared. And likewise, were prepared to attack if we have to, as retribution. Reporter but the president backed off his threat to strike iranian cultural sites, something his own advisers acknowledged would be considered a war crime. And, you know what, if thats what the law is i like to obey the law. But think of it. They kill our people. They blow up our people, then we have to be gentle with their cultural institutions. But im okay with it. Its okay with me. Reporter the strike that killed soleimani took place in iraq, sparking outrage there and prompting the Iraqi Parliament to vote to expel u. S. Troops. Yesterday, the u. S. Military sparked confusion by sending the Iraqi Government a letter announcing that american troops would be pulling out. The pentagon insists the letter was a mistake a draft never meant to be sent out. Asked about it today, the president deferred to secretary of state mike pompeo. What was said yesterday, i didnt know about. I really dont know about it. What is that, mike, what exactly i just know that there was a draft letter that was sent a draft, unsigned. Reporter and the president said the iraqis dont actually want u. S. Troops to withdraw. If we leave, that would mean that iran would have a much bigger foothold, and the people of iraq do not want to see iran run the country. That i can tell you. So, a lot of confusion involving iraq tonight. They find themselves in the middle of this escalation between the u. S. And iran, jon. But that, of course, all secondary to whats playing out this evening and the president is surrounded by his National Security team right there at the white house . Reporter the president s top National Security advisers came here to the white house this evening to brief him on the situation following these iranian strikes, but i have just been told, david, that the president does not plan to address the nation tonight on this attack. All right, so, the president will wait until tomorrow before we hear from President Trump on whats played out tonight. Jon karl on the breaking inside. Jon, thank you. And there were a number of potential targets for iran to strike, so, what if anything can we learn from what they chose to do . Lets bring in marine colonel Stephen Ganyard with us. Good to have you back with us. You were on with us earlier, so, you know that martha reported that the iranians identified 13 revenge scenarios, were the words they used, bringing a, quote, historic nightmare for america, is what they warned of. But theres no question in your mind they made some calculations here in decide what to target tonight . David, if they had 13 scenarios, this was probably 14. It doesnt seem to make much sense. These are two very remote bases, probably the fewest number of u. S. Troops on them. If they had gone after any other u. S. Base in the region, they would have had a much better chance of harming u. S. Service personnel. And so, theres just a chance here, david, that maybe the iranians intended to shoot into the open desert, to not harm the u. S. , but to be able to go back to their own people, to say, we stood up to america. If thats true and the casualties, theres no u. S. Casualties and that holds up, this just may be a chance to deescalate and avoid an allout war in the region. A chance to deescalate. As you heard jon report there, the president is surrounded by his National Security team tonight, no doubt going over the options. Theyll go over the options and the u. S. Is locked and loaded. If the president orders something that can be done within minutes, theres also forces still flowing into the region and, so, the next couple of days will tell. Well watch closely, of course. Steve, youll be with us every step of the way, thank you. We also know tonight congressional leaders were notified of the iranian strike tonight by both the president and the Vice President , who both made calls, so, lets get to mary bruce on the hill tonight. Reporter david, weve learned that President Trump himself called the Top Republican in the house, kevin mccarthy, while the Vice President has been briefing Democratic Leaders by phone. Speaker pelosi says she is monitoring the situation, tweeting, quote, we must ensure the safety of our servicemembers, including ending needless provocations from the administration and demanding that iran cease its violence. Saying america and the world cannot afford war. Now, earlier today, Administration Officials breached congressional leaders on iran and the air strike that killed soleimani and tomorrow, all members of the house and senate are set to be briefed, as well. We both know, mary, all this playing out amid the backdrop of this impeachment showdown and it was just a little more than 24 hours ago, we reported former National Security adviser john bolton is now saying that we would testify if subpoenaed in a senate trial. And today, Senate Majority leader republican Mitch Mcconnell said hes got the votes he needs to start the trial without any new witnesses, at least at the start . Reporter david, mcconnell told his members he now has enough republican votes to move ahead and start a trial in the Senate Without committing to calling additional witnesses. And that has been the big demand from democrats, that republicans bring in key witnesses. Democrats say without them, a trial in the senate would simply be unfair. Now, tonight, Speaker Pelosi is Still Holding onto the articles of impeachment. She says she still wants more information about what a trial in the senate is going to look like before shes willing to hand them over. David . Mary bruce on the hill, thank you. We could ndo not want a war wit. We have learned hard lessons in the past half century that war in the middle east is costly in lives and money and just, its disruption that it causes to cultures and it seems that pulling out of the iran nuclear deal, once we did that, things only got worse. Barbara lee released this statement, saying sadly, this response is exactly what we feared. Trump
