One part of our effort to build a better bay area is exploring ways the different communities are responding to homelessness, which as you know is such a huge problem. Some neighborhoods in San Francisco have taken matters into their own hands. Last month the city removed large boulders from an alley after neighbors purchased them to block Homeless People from setting up tents. Now in a different neighborhood where someone closed off an alleyway where they say the homeless and drug dealers hang out, abc7 News Reporter luz pennia is live with the story tonight. Luz . This is the sound of constant fights by homeless and drug dealers that many neighbors say they hear almost every night. Once again, San Francisco not taking care of its mentally ill and not taking care of the drug problem. That is terrifying in the entire city. It terrified many in this neighborhood, which led to this, a plywood blockade or wall, that according to the neighbor who placed it here was approved and received by the city of San Francisco. After three to four days blocking the path, other neighbors complained and it was removed. Did not agree with the blockade at all. That was a nuclear decision. And that was the big issue. Its why board it up . Thats a circumstance of fear. Which is almost worse. We should not be scared. We should be able to contact our local authorities. San francisco officials are looking for whoever vandalized the Christopher Columbus statue near coit tower. Someone wrote, quote, destroy all monuments of genocide and kill all colonizers. Officials believe it is likely a symbolic action on Indigenous Peoples day. Columbus is a hero in italy and to italian americans, but he represents oppression and violence to native americans. This morning one group took a historical new journey to mark the 50th anniversary of indians occupation on alcatraz. Jobina fortson has the story. A gorgeous hunters moon shined over the bay at moon as canoes representing native tribes and families from as far north as canada and as far west as hawaii headed out on a canoe journey around alcatraz, something the bay area has never seen before. One of the original leaders of the alcatraz occupation, a man named Richard Oakes said alcatraz is not an island, its an idea. And the idea was that alcatraz would serve as a symbol for native rights and native people, a symbol of our resistance. 2019 marks the anniversary of the occupation of alcatraz. In 1969, native activists and students occupied the island, cataloging the indigenous rights movement. It seemed only fitting for this group to mark the moment on Indigenous Peoples day. Weve been here forever since time immemorial, and well be forever here. For some, rowing through the bay was tough, the water cold and choppy. But the experience spiritual. I really felt the presence of the people who went before us, the people who fought for native rights 50 years ago, people who are fighting for native issues today. And the land, seeing the sun ter come up. It was a very emotional spiritual experience. In addition to the celebrations here to mark Indigenous Peoples day, there were also others around the area, including a music and Arts Festival at yerba buena guards in San Francisco. In walnut creek, the city is poised to approve a 30year vision that would include new homes, offices and different city districts. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley is live in downtown walnut creek to explain what the plan is. Leslie . Well, its all very interesting, dan. The biggest change may be reimagining these sprawling suburban Car Dealerships in the future. City leaders say they dont want to encroach on open space. Instead, they want to condense things in this downtown heart of the city, the prime real estate, changing for the future. And thats what theyre working on. The area north of civic drive in walnut creek is being reimagined for the future, with limited land to develop, the city wants to condense Car Dealerships into an auto row and create art and artisans district. Specifically, the 30year plan incorporates 191 acres north of civic drive and south of parkside bordered by 6780 to the west and the iron horse trail to the east. This area would be condensed into an auto row. What were talking about is consolidating our auto sales and Service Areas into a more vertical environment where they have twostory showrooms as opposed to using flat surface land for parking, which is not a great use of land. The city hopes the land now occupied by this honda dealership at the corner of north main and civic would be converted. To create a new vibrant pedestrian friendly space where people can come and gather with an outdoor space that maybe could host Live Music Events or the farmers market. An area along pine street would be designated a makers row in the hopes of encouraging industrial artisan spaces like microbreweries or bike manufacturers. 619 new Housing Units that are part of this plan would be incorporated in high density housing with restaurants and retail on the bottom floor. New urban trails would be paved to provide more direct access to bart than the current streets allow. Well, the new plan is up for a vote before the city council tomorrow night. The city says theyre prepared to use economic incentives to accelerate the plan and densify this downtown, building vertically over the next 30 years. Kristen and dan . Leslie, walnut creek continues to change dramatically every year. What is the plan for getting Car Dealerships to cooperate and actually move locations . Thats a good question, because theyve already opened the dialogue with the local car dealers who are now talking to the Car Manufacturers to get all of this rolling. Imagine that whats behind me, this flat lot would instead be a two or threestory showroom with a parking garage with all the cars for sale, much like you see in other urban centers, and the dealers would have to cooperate with each other, much like you see at an airport, in a parking structure where there are a lot of rental car agencies sharing the same space.
