Well have complete analysis from our round table of experts. Well be right back. Stay with us. Nightline, the democratic debate continues. Here again, byron pitts. Welcome back to newt line. Were in houston. Minutes ago, the top ten candidates taking on each other and the man they hope to replace. Terry moran has been following the action. The debates done, let the spinning begin. After the debate it was substantive. It was a wellmoderated debate, shout out to our colleagues there. It probably wont move the needle much in the polls, but after a campaign dominated by progressive voices, tonight the centrists struck back. Ten candidates came out tonight. Thats what i want to do for you. As president. As president. As president of the united states. The stakes so high, each determined to make their case for why they should be at the top of the democratic ticket. Ive actually never met anybody who likes their Health Insurance company. We should get moving. Theres enormous, enormous opportunities once we get rid of donald trump. We must and will defeat trump, the most dangerous president in the history of this country. But only one will get there. And minutes later, it was game on. Julian castro in the middle of a health care discussion, taking a veiled swipe at joe biden, going there on the question of bidens age. Are you forgetting already what you said just two minutes ago . I mean, i cant believe that you said two minutes ago that they had to buy in. And now youre saying they dont have to, youre forgetting that. Fair comment . Cheap shot . Im fulfilling the legacy of barack obama and youre not. Ill be surprised at him. The jockeying didnt stop. Its not an attack on Vice President joe biden. Its about the health care policy. That was my focus. Candidates heading to the spin room to continue their arguments. Joe and i have a very different voting record and a very different vision for this country. The conversation about gun control could have been the same they were having when i was in high school. I am still introducing myself to the American People. I have not run before for president. We have at least a couple people on the stage who have run once and some many times. I thought it was great. Its a chance to talk to millions of americans about whats broken in our country, and more importantly, what were going to do about it. The candidates were lined up by their strengths in the polls. In the middle the three front runners, and they went after each other on a crucial subject, how to defend health care. Shes for bernie. Im for barack. Taking on his opponents left and right. The senator on my left has not indicated how she pays for it. And the senator has come forward and said how hes going to pay for it, but it gets him about halfway there. Lets be clear about health care. We all owe a huge debt to president obama, who fundamentally transformed health care in america and committed this country to health care for every human being. And now the question is, how best can we improve on it. And i believe the best way we can do that is we make sure that everybody gets covered by health care at the lowestpossible cost. Every study done shows that steffective approach to ovidin country. I wrote the damn bill, if i may say so. Intent to eliminate all outofpocket expenses. Bernie wrote the bill. I read the bill. And on page eight, on page eight of the bill it says that we will no longer have private insurance as we know it, and that means that 149 million americans will no longer be able to have their current insurance. I dont think thats a bold idea. I think its a bad idea. The sparring on it went on for more than half an hour. 500,000 americans are going bankrupt. You know why theyre going bankrupt . Because they suffered a terrible disease, cancer or heart into financial ruin people because they suffered with a diagnosis of cancer. And our program is the only one that does that. Biden didnt skip a beat. I know a lot about cancer. Let me tell you something. Its personal to me. Come on. Ive been there, youve been there. You know what its like. People need help now, hope now, and do something now. Biden comes into this debate consistently leading in the polls with 27 of democrats preferring him, followed by sanders with 19 and warren with 17 . They took on another divisive issue, racism. We have a white supremacist in the white house and poses a mortal threat to people of country all across this country. This took place at Texas Southern university, a historically black institution. We have systemic racism eroding our nation from health care to the criminal justice system. I want to turn to the deadly Mass Shootings. Texas is still reeling from the deadly Mass Shootings in el paso and odessa, but many are fierce defenders of the second amendment. All were passionate that something needs to be done. . I met a mother of a 15yearold girl who was shot, and she watched her bleed to death over the course of a how much. There werent enough ambulances to get to them in time. Hell, yes, were going to take your ar15, your ak47. Were not going to allow it to be used against americans anymore. People asked me in el paso, do you think trump is responsible for what happened . I said, will, look, obviously, he didnt pull the trigger, but hes certainly been tweeting out the ammunition. If you want action now, weve got to send a message to mitch mcconnell. We cant wait until one of us gets in the white house. We have to pass those bills right now. Another issue front and center in texas, immigration and the policies of the trump administration. All those people are seeking asylum. They deserve to be heard. Thats who we are. Now, did you make a mistake with those deportations . The president did the best thing that was able to be done at the time. How about you . Im the Vice President of the united states. One of those on the periphery, andrew yang, tried a different tact to get attention. Im going to do something unprecedented tonight. My campaign will now give a freedom dividend of 1,000 a month for an entire year to ten american families, someone watching this at home right now. But some Campaign Finance experts say those monthly gifts walk a very fine line of Campaign Finance laws that prohibit personal use of campaign funds. For all their differences tonight, the candidates were certainly united on one thing, getting rid of the current president. We must and will defeat trump, the most dangerous president in the history of this country. According to the latest abc News Washington post poll that looks at 2020 general election standings, five of the democratic contenders lead President Trump in head to head matchups. Id like to see him making a deal with xi jinping. Is it just me . Or was that supposed to happen in like april . Its one more example of a commitment not made. When that happens on the International Stage people take note. And he is treating our farmers and workers like poker chips in one of his bankrupt casinos. All ten candidates can now take stock of how they did. But with the next debate one month away, theyll be out on the campaign trail testing new lines. Our thanks to terry. And up next, breaking down the big moments with our powerhouse round table. Nightline, the democratic debate, continues. Reporter welcome back. Joining me now in the spin room, abc news contributors rahm emanuel, yvette simpson, Heidi Heitkamp and matt dowd. Well tomorrow to your first nightline. Glad to have you here. Our first question is for rahm. And everyone else pick up on it. Who won and who lost . The Democratic Party won. This debate was better for the party advancing its cause. Senator, Vice President bide p ca came in and showed energy. I dont like what is considered twotier candidates, i dont like that term. I thought castro was way too harsh. The point got overshadowed by the harshness. Thats going to be the take away and work unfortunately against some of the other candidates like senator booker and senator harris who had moments. Your reaction . Winner or loser . I think the Democratic Party won again, and actually, the American People won. Right . They got the chance to see these candidates the way we wanted to see them, right . They got front and center stage, they got to talk about the issues, not only their plans but how it affects them personally. They got to hear some bold ideas, debate on ideas, intricacies on ideas. This is a great opportunity without a whole lot of distraction to see who is going to be the person who is going to lead this party and this country forward. I think clearly everyone did well. I think biden by surviving, looking energetic till the end, you know, avoiding kind of a major mistake. I think biden did himself real good tonight. He, you know, if you thought he was illprepared for the job before, youre probably there right now. But i think for people who have been concerned, can he stand on the stage for three hours and actually have a debate, i think that question was answered. Is that enough at this point to walk off the stage standing up. Yeah, thats the fascinating thing about the debate. Some thought it would constrain the field and force the dynamics in a certain direction. Because it was so very much ref this race is more unformed after tonight than it was formed going into tonight. One other thing i think we have to put into context, not just that we had just only ten candidates and a number of candidates, you know the president is dropping, which means more voters are starting to look. And so in the context of people are unanchored or untethered, rather is a better way to say t all of a sudden you get presentation. More of them are going to cue in, look, listen. There are a number of people who started to look president ial, can go manu a manu. And in a moment when the president is dropping, more voters are to be had and that for the party was a better prospect. And there are subjects we didnt touch. Rahm mentioned castro and that moment where he questioned the Vice President and his memory. Did he go too far . That seems to be the uncomfortable moment. I think it depends on your perspective. Younger voters, i dont think theyre going to see it as an offensive moment. I think theyre going to see it as a debate. There are probably some Old School Folks who like the nicy nice who were probably startled by it. But i think there was a lot of energy going across the day and highlighting that moment was a little unfair. Democratic candidates make a mistake if they think they have to become their version of donald trump. If the voters want a bully, they got a bully, theyve got the biggest, baddest bully in the white house whos a republican. They want somebody whos not donald trump, and not donald trump is somebody civilized, calm, respectful, doesnt engage in a personal battle. Is it fair to compare him to donald trump . I dont think he was that far. You cant be a bully against donald trump and win. Heres the thing. We were talking much earlier about authenticity. Secretary castro is a nice guy. He came across as mean. This is going to work against his candidacy. Its not true to the core of the person and its going to go to the benefit of joe biden. Being in the room, what seemed like one of the emotional markers of the night was the conversation about gun control and beto orourkes remarks and the things he said. Do you think that will work in a state like texas . Can democrats win with the gun control argument where he talked about taking away everyones ak47 . . I think its a slippery slope. When you Start Talking about legislation and mandatory buybacks, that, to people, seems to go a little bit too far. The thing about gun owners, theyre willing to have the discussion if they think it will make a difference in terms of what happens with gun violence in this country. But i honestly believe the last year has changed the dynamic from where it was even two years ago. So i think the president clearly believes that he has to do something on this. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with, and that will draw the contrast. Your facial expressions during that speaks. Can we challenge you to poker . Between the progressive and moderate wings of the Democratic Party. Whos winning that right now . Heres the reason that somebody who was assigned by president they are taking positions on gun control on the wrong side. They are taking environmental protections on the wrong side. This is a case in point f weife going to win states that are really in play, issues that work in a metropolitan perspective and just urban, funding of education equitably. Youre stare ago hole in his head. Listen, the energy in the future and the president with this party is with millennials, black and brown sed te will continue to do that. That energy is in the progressive nature. What were talking about now is if we havent learned anything from trump is that you need to deliver to your base. And the base of this party are people who have been waiting on the world to change, and theyre tired of waiting. Im a gunowning texan, right . And the majority of gunowning texans today want universal background checks, a ban on ak47s. Heidis right. If you go too far and confiscation of guns and whatever, thats a problem. But the issue that democrats used to run away from ten years ago or 15 years ago on guns is now popular among the majority of gun owners. This is the point that why hasnt donald trump put a position out . He knows between his base and the voters he needs, hes in trouble. Senator klobuchar had a key point on Domestic Violence and expanding gun control, 10 of all crimes are committed by Domestic Violence. Whats really interesting is if you look in the backgrounds of most of the people who have committed mass gun violence, they have a Domestic Assault in their background. So that would disqualify them automatically under a background check. We have time for two more questions. Is there anyone whos going to get a phone call from a check writer tomorrow saying its time to drop out . I thought going in i want the 1,000. We all do, rahm. Who doesnt . Who doesnt want 1,000 . No reason for anybody to drop out. Although, if in the next week, after this debate, they cant cash flow their campaign, theyre going to have to think seriously, and thats been a problem. I always tell people, this is the biggest fund raising opportunity. Everybody on that stage had. Lets see what happens in the next ten days. . Th that will be the last word, thank you all so much.
