Facebook finds itself under increased scrutiny with eight states taking part in an antitrust investigation. The attorney general announced shes leading the group. Among the things to look at in the probe is whether consumer data was at risk and if the social network has reduced the quality of users choices. Eric swalwell weighed in saying facebooks Business Model raises questions. Monopoly is one where they drive others out of business and drive up the price of goods. Here facebook is free but is it really free if theyre benefitting from our data or using data that they collect to put other businesses out of business. So, its certainly fair questions to raise. Facebook says it plans to work with the attorneys general and it operates in what it calls a competitive environment. Joining me now is cnet editorinchief, connie. What impact do you think this will have on facebook because its the states as opposed to the feds going after them . Its not been a good year for facebook, lets put it this way. They were fined earlier this year for violating the privacy over their cambridge data breach. Now theyre being fined hor how they collect data and how they use it against you and how they keep competitors out of the market. Its that power. People get nervous with that power. We have more than 2 billion people on that platform so their reach is very wide. Do you think theres going to be a serious attempt to break up facebook when you talk about the monopoly they have . Thats a tough one to try to pull off. Sure. Weve seen other regulators try to do that with microsoft about 20 years ago or so. Its tough to pull off but it speaks to the nervousness youre seeing and the fact that we have both democrats and republicans coming together over the issue of Tech Companies. Its a very popular talking point in the runup to the election, as you know. It speaks to how serious more people are taking the way these businesses operate and not just saying, hey, they know what theyre doing. Theyre smart people. Lets let them run. The fact you have bipartisan suspe support in a time when that doesnt exist at all, that in itself, actually, is a headline here. Sure, its a rallying point, right . People cant agree over anything but republicans and democrats can agree how nervous how big tech is getting and how they operated. Billions of people use their platforms. Its part of your life. It touches every aspect of your life. Theres a lot of nervousness. Weve seen a lot of data breaches. Weve seen a lot of questionable Business Practices all in the quest of triying to grow bigger on their part. We cant just unplug. This is the way people communicate from a personal and business perspective. It does speak to the seriousness of how important these companies are and exactly how theyre using or, in some cases misusing, our data. Is google in the same boat as facebook . Several of the states, the attorneys generals will also bring an investigation against google as well over its competitive practices. The federal agencies, ftc and the doj, have also been looking at both facebook and google. Yes, google, the Worlds Largest search engine, is under scrutiny as well. Not only in the u. S. But abroad. In europe theyve been more aggressive going after these Tech Companies. Are we starting to see that shift here where were following their lead or is it just kind of time where people are looking and going, we got to do something here. Youre right. Europe has been very much at the forefront. Especially because they have been more aggressive in data protection. They started a Big Initiative last year about how they handle Tech Companies handle your information. Every company handles your information. Now were seeing u. S. Regulators basically catch up. Connie, thanks for coming in. Have a great weekend. Deion will be with us in a moment. That was for dramatic effect, larry, thanks to you guys.
