Going through it was terrifying. Were happy to be alive. Glad my family is safe. Reporter homes left splintered, water engulfing the island. This is what grand bahama island looked like before, then after dorian. Much of the island now under water. The coast guard helping out, leading search and rescue efrt the death toll now as seven and expected to climb. More than 60,000 people will be in need of food and clean water. Stateside up and down the coast, evacuation orders remain. This is a very serious storm and a western shift that is towards labd of just a few miles could bring enormous damage. Reporter the threat of storm surge in low lying charleston, south carolina, had hospital workers racing to move as many patients as they can to higher ground. In savannah, georgia, families trying to follow officials orders waiting in bus lines to get out. I dont have the vehicles. I dont have the finances to go out of town. Reporter not everyone listening to those evacuation orders. Some choosing to hunker down, ride out the storm after it was downgraded to category 2. The chp says one car went off the freeway and down 15 feet into an embankment. Its unclear what caused the car to crash or if anyone else was hurt. The search and recovery effort continues following that deadly dive boat fire off southern ca the remains of 20 victims have been recovered. 14 others remain missing, but theyre believed to have died when the 75foot charter burst into flames before it finally sank. Investigators say the passengers were trapped in a sleeping deck when flames blocked the only stairway as an escape hatch. We spoke to the mother of one of the victims who lived in mill valley. Abc 7s jobina fortson joins us with that part of the story. A mill valley mother is over come with grief especially seeing these images. Her daughter, lisa field her was on conception when it caught fire and sank. Li lisas mother, nancy field her, presumes her only child is dead as one of the 34 people who was trapped aboard the diving vessel. Nancy field her tells us her daughter loved the water, nature and texted her sunday night saying she was having a great time on the boat. Now nancy wants to know why the five crew members managed to escape conception and no one else. Why did the crewhe h arod to get a dinghy and theyhe. That was valuable time lost. Unless they couldnt get past the flames, i dont know. She gave Law Enforcement a description of her daughter and now she has to wait for dna results to confirm her daughters death. A judge still has yet to decide whether two jurors will be allowed to go on vacations they planned for later this month. The panel has only had five days deliberations after returning from a 12daybreak yesterday. They had to start over last month when three jurors were dismissed and replaced with alternates. They seem quiet, seem sullen, they seem introspective in the short period of time they were in court. They, therefore, are participating in the gravest portion of their deliberations right now. They gathered at a warehouse in oakland last night to pack up and prepare. That deployment is for 14 to 21 days. We expect we will see a fair amount of flooding. Depending on the storm itself, there may be wind damage, also, that will cause the search to be more complicated. We have a swift water rescue component. Each of the teams is bringing several inflatable rescue boats with us so we can perform rescues in the moving water. Those teams are headed to charlotte. The metropolitan Transportation Commission wants you to keep driving and not stop at these toll plazas anymore. They will vote today on a contract to convert to electronic pay at all seven stateowned bridges. No more paying a toll booth employee. Theyre already doing this at the golden gate bridge. No one stops. They just keep going. They get charged electronically or they get a bill in the mail. Advocates say this could take five minutes off of your commute. They also think this will cut down on accidents that happen when cars are busy switching lanes at the last minute at the toll plaza. Todays vote is a big step toward the goal. They do expect this to take years to implement. They predict the bay bridge will be the last one to convert because tearing down this toll plaza will be a huge undertaking, but they are moving forward making this big step today with this vote. A crew working at fwart station knocked down a power line on monday. San leandro Crane Company says the crane operator was told to back up. The person who told him to back up may not have seen the line. Three separate investigations are under way. Theres confusion over a controversial bill tightening School Vaccination rules. That bill would require the state department of Public Health to review vaccine medical exemptions issued by doctors. The state assembly passed the measure yesterday. After the vote it went to the Governors Office and they announced changes to the measure that would be required before it reaches his desk. They didnt say what those changes would be. Notice the rainfall could taper just a little bit before picking up the yellow and the orange as the storm moves towards nova scotia and out of here kplooit completely by the weekend. The rainfall will be the Biggest Issue with the storm, the beach erosion and the likes of that. The closer you are to the coast, the more likely youll have damage. Winds, they aisle probably stay out over the ocean more so. Well watch the water. Thats really going to be an issue. Hopefully those folks dodge a big bullet. We saw what happened in the bahamas. Sadly San Francisco is on track to surpass last years traffic fatalities. 23 people died last year. 22 people have died so far this year including the horrible accident involving a pedestrian. Thats despite a major effort to reduce pedestrian deaths. In 2018, more than 20 of all traffic fatalities were people who were homeless. In the past five years about a quarter of traffic fatalities were due to left turning vehicles. Police have acknowledged they havent kept up with enforcement because of the lack of personnel. Thats changing as the city adds traffic officers. Ideally, yeah, we would triple or quadruple that number and have that number of officers out there that can just solely focus on the focus on the five violations. The five violations are speeding, failing to stop at a red light or stop sign, failing to give pedestrians the rightofway or yielding to pedestrians when turning. The citys goal is to get to ro.
