Tom cruise threw everybody off with this thing. He surprised his fans, surprised the world. That is a look there at the new top gun. Dont call it top gun 2. Its called top gun maverick is what theyre calling it but its been trending all night, trending number one. A lot more on that coming up. First we need to get to that dangerous lifethreatening heat wave. Nearly 200 million americans now facing alerts. Take a look at how hot its going to feel, and that heat is sticking around all weekend long. Ginger is outside in times square starting us off with everything we need to know. Good morning, ginger. Good morning to you, amy. Let me give you a little perspective. Chicago this morning, temperatures are in the 80s but it feels like almost 90, very similar to how youre waking up in miami or new orleans. Yes, thats the type of heat were talking about all the way north and a lot of folks in new airconditioning. So the core of the heat is circled there. Today 116 the feels like in des moines, kansas city 115 but you see the heat advisories from oklahoma all the way to maine, vermont. The feels like will be closing in on 100. The actual temperatures on saturday will be in the mid to upper 90s if not 100 degrees from washington, d. C. To boston. But you add the humidity and its going to feel 5 to even 10 degrees warmer. Thats why its such a big deal. Much harder on your body and thats why we have to go to chicago this morning where we find stephanie ramos, again feeling like its 87 degrees already, stephanie. Reporter oh, it absolutely does, ginger. Its expected to get so hot here that the illinois tollway has launched a 24hour weather patrol. Crews are ready to go up and down these highways to get to stranded drivers quickly during these dangerously high temperatures. This morning, an unrelenting heat wave is gripping the nation. These are lifethreatening temperatures and conditions and we all have to Work Together to remain safe. Reporter in chicago, with an excessive heat watch in effect through the weekend, dozens of facilities like the Salvation Army are operating as cooling centers. Check out these people in florida riding along with a makeshift air conditioner. In new york city, the triathlon set for sunday forced to cancel because of the extreme heat levels. New york citys mayor bill de blasio declaring an emergency due to the extreme heat. Officials hoping new york citys power grid can beat the heat, and avoid a repeat of last weekends blackout. We have over 4,000 crew members on the ground ready to respond to outages as they occur. Reporter in the midwest sun wearing down construction workers. They know to get down, get in the shade, cool off. Reporter in omaha, it is so hot people were baking biscuits in their car. The pan topping out at 185 degrees. Dangerous heat extending all the way out west where in arizona an airconditioning technician was found dead in an attic. Though its unclear how he died, it comes on a day where temperatures rose well above 100 degrees. And not just humans, but pets are also at risk. Experts say in these triple digit temps its best to keep them inside so they dont suffer from heat stroke. Panting, pacing, just lethargy in general, if theyre just not acting like themselves, they probably wont want to play. They can lose their appetite. Reporter heres another you see this full water bottle. It can actually start a fire in your car. Check out this video posted by a Fire Department from oklahoma. The bottle can be used as a magnifying glass and burn a hole in a piece of paper. The Fire Department says, yes, sure, this is rare but go ahead and take that water bottle with you to avoid a fire and also to stay hydrated. T. J. All right, stephanie, thank you so much. Now to breaking news for our viewers in the west, an earthquake rocking greece this morning felt in athens. People running into the streets and ian pannell has the very latest for us. Good morning, ian. Reporter an earthquake measuring 5. 3 has been felt in athens and elsewhere in the country and across europe sending people fleeing onto the street. It struck at 2 people were seen running out of offices and on social media people are describing strong shaking, objects falling, but thankfully, say it lasted only a few seconds. No reports of damage or injuries so far, but Office Workers have been sent home for the day as a precaution. Greece sits on the intersection of three continental place and is prone to earthquakes. 20 years ago 143 people died in a massive quake. We will keep you updated. Amy. Ian, thank you. Well turn to washington now and the fallout over that chant about congresswoman ilhan omar. The president s supporters shouting send her back. Now the white house is trying to contain the damage. The president says he tried to stop those chants but as you can see that is not what the video shows. Lets bring in our chief White House Correspondent jonathan karl. You had quite an exchange with the president yesterday and you asked pointblank, why didnt he try to stop these chants . Reporter exactly, cecilia and the president is now disavowing or saying he is disavowing words that are nearly identical to the language that he himself used. [ chanting ] reporter congresswoman ilhan omar returned to her home district in minnesota to hugs, cheers and support from her constituents. It sure feels good to be home. Eporter the warm welcome came just 24 hours after Trump Supporters chanted send her back. Omar has a history of launching vicious antisemitic screeds. [ chanting send her back ] reporter the chant played out for 13 seconds and the president didnt speak until it died down. President trump disavowed those words of his own supporters. I was not happy with it. I disagree with it, but, again, i didnt say i didnt say that. They did but i disagree. They were echoing what you said in your first tweet that they should go back. I dont think if you examine it, i dont think youll find that but i disagree with it. Reporter it was president trumps tweet sunday that suggested that four congresswomen including omar, quote, go back to the countries they came from. Though omar was the only immigrant among them. When your supporters last night were chanting send her back, why didnt you stop them . Why didnt you ask them to stop saying that . Well, number one, i think i did. I started speaking very quickly. It really was a i disagree with it, by the way, but it was quite a chant and i felt a little bit badly about it. Reporter and, of course, the chant did go on for 13 seconds. He didnt start speaking very quickly. Even as he was disavowing the chant, the president was lavishing praise on those doing the chanting, telling me, quote, they love our country. I want them to continue loving our country. Cecilia . Yeah, really was an Incredible Exchange you had there, jon. Another headline the president announced his new pick for labor secretary. This, of course, after Alexander Acosta resigned in the wake of the controversy over how he handled the Jeffrey Epstein case. This new nominee pick has a pretty famous last name. Reporter he sure does. Its eugene scalia, the son of former justice antonin scalia. He is a lawyer who also has an interesting career related to the justice department. He once worked for an attorney general named william barr, that is the current attorney general, but he worked for him back in the 90s when he was the attorney general for the first president bush. Jon, thank you. Now to rising tensions with iran. This morning the regime disputing president trumps claim that a u. S. Warship destroyed an iranian drone less than a month after iran shot down a u. S. Drone. Chief Global Affairs correspondent Martha Raddatz has been tracking all of that. Martha, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, amy. This morning, the iranians claim they have not lost any drones in the strait of hormuz or anywhere else and say they have images proving it, adding that they worry the u. S. Shot down one of its own drones by mistake, but that is certainly not what the u. S. Is saying. President trumelf announcing that the warship, the uss boxer, destroyed and iranian drone in the strait after it approached the ship within a thousand feet in what he said threatened the safety of the ship and its crew. A u. S. Official telling abc that the marines on board brought down the drone with jamming equipment on the ship that caused the drone to crash after electronically interfering with its flight, amy. So they have destroyed one of our drones. We have vowed one of their drones. But there is a big difference between those drones, correct . Reporter really a huge difference. The drone that the u. S. Shot down was an extremely sophisticated, highly classified and very expensive piece of equipment with a wingspan like a 737. The iranian drone was thought to be much smaller and far less sophisticated, but this shows once again tensions remain extremely high in the region, amy. Martha raddatz, thank you so much. T. J. . We turn now to that frightening scene in texas. A bus carrying dozens of kids home from camp goes up in flames. Yes, were talking fully engulfed as you see there. We can tell you everybody made it out, but six kids had to be treated at the scene. Abcs marcus moore in dallas with the latest on this investigation. Good morning to you, on this scary scene, was it, marcus . Reporter t. J. , good morning. Absolutely terrifying and were talking about kids, a dozen of them, between the ages of 12 and 15 on board this bus when the fire started and they had just moments to get off safely. This morning, new terrifying video shows massive flames engulfing a charter bus carrying more than 40 children from a texas church on their way home from summer camp in san antonio. Witnesses say soon after getting on the road they felt the bus start to shake. They smelled smoke and melting rubber, then an urgent scramble to get off of that burning bus. Seeing all the girls crying and freaking out kind of made me freak out more. Reporter everyone got out in time. A passerby recording this terrifying cell phone video that captures the initial flames leaping from underneath the bus as chaperones quickly get the children away from the inferno, the bus erupt the. As soon as we got there and were safe, like, the fire just like engulfed the bus. And it was pretty quickly. It was engulfed in flames. Reporter thick, black smoke filling the air as children looked on. While its unclear what caused the fire, some Church Officials believe it was an engine issue. And emergency crews treated six kids for nonlifethreatening injuries. Thankfully we can report this morning that all are expected to be okay and the investigation into what caused this bus to catch on fire is still on. Cecilia. We are glad they are okay this morning. Thank you. We turn to the daring escape. Youll want to see this. An unbelievable video, a reallife spiderman, take a look. Watch as he climbs down a 19story highrise that happened during a fire. Firefighters were right there watching it all and the cameras were rolling as the man carefully moves from floor to floor in philadelphia. Fortunately the man got down safely, but unfortunately there were four residents and three Police Officers who were injured. We also have turning to maryland where there was a frightening scene at six flags overnight. Riders on the firebird roller coaster trapped on top of the lift hill for nearly two hours when the coaster got stuck. Crews climbing up the steps to rescue them. Thankfully everyone made it down okay. The ride will reportedly remain close until its inspected and cleared. Amy, you like roller coasters. Not me. Steer clear. This mornings burning question. Do you feel the need, the need for more speed . Well, tom cruise is bringing it debuting the new trailer for top gun maverick, the sequel, of course to his 80s hit, surprising fans at comiccon and the rest of the world. Chris connelly is in los angeles with all of those details. Good morning, chris. Reporter good morning, amy. Thats right. Its only been three decades in the making, right . Tom cruise bringing the trailer with him to comic con in san diego where as he pointed out, parts of the First Top Gun were filmed. Tom cruise. Reporter well, look who decided to pay a surprise visit to comiccon on thursday. Im feeling that loving feeling. Reporter tom cruise and he brought a Little Something to share with the fans. The trailer for the long, long awaited sequel to the megahit, top gun. 34 years you guys have been very, very patient with me. And i felt that it was my responsibility to finally really deliver for you. Great balls of fire. Reporter three decades after cruises maverick got in the cockpit and took to the sky, do you feel the need . The need for speed. Reporter top gun maverick gets you with two minutes plus of pulsepounding footage and a little bit of dialogue. You should be at least a twostar admiral by now, yet here you are, captain. Why is that . Its one of lifes mysteries, sir. Reporter set 34 years after the first film, its plot said to involve cruises maverick as an elite Flight Instructor guiding up flyboy son whos played by miles teller which is great, ah, but that trailer offering the aerial adrenaline that made the 1986 movie a smash and made an alist star out of cruise. Yet another example of big studios throwing it back to the buzz that was with sequels, remakes and spinoffs from this summers lion king and toy story 4 to john wick chapter 3 keeping those sweetly familiar movie characters alive and kicking. The end is inevitable, maverick. Your kind is headed for extinction. Maybe so, sir, but not today. Those eager to ride into the danger zone once again, you know who you are. Well still have to wait awhile. Top gun maverick is slated to be released on june 26, 2020, guys. Thats right. I know who i am, chris. He looks exactly the same, doesnt he . Now the latest on that deepening mystery at the vatican where officials are searching to are a 15yearold girl who vanished nearly four decades ago. Tomorrow investigators will unseal and examine a discovery they made in a tomb that could be key. Abcs will reeve has more from vatican city. Will, good morning. Reporter amy, good morning. Last week the search for Emanuela Orlandi heated up when an area believed to contain the bones of two 19th century german princesses turned up empty, but nearby bones and human remains were found. Now tomorrow morning just behind me here in the vatican, officials will unseal those containers hoping to uncover clues in a decades long mystery. More questions will soon be answered in that mystery at the vatican as two containers bearing human remains will be unsealed tomorrow perhaps leading to clues to the four decades old case of 15yearold Emanuela Orlandi. Any time there is a mystery, a potential scandal with any hint of the vatican involvement its going to take on a life of its own. Reporter it sounds like it could be the newest Robert Langdon story. I need access to the vatican archives. Reporter the teenager vanishing 36 years ago and was never seen again. You have a young girl who just disappears without a trace on a roman street. The fact that she had a connection to the vatican. She was the daughter of a vatican employee has only amplified the interest. Reporter last week vatican investigators acted on an anonymous tip that her remains might be buried here, prying open the tombs of two 19th century german princesses, an angel pointing right to it. Her brother telling reporters no remains were found in either tomb. [ speaking Foreign Language ] it was completely empty. The excavation on the grounds of the Pontifical Teutonic College right next to st. Peters basilica. When those tombs turned up empty, the vatican recalled empty, the vatican recalled that there was structural work done on that cemetery where the bones might have been moved. So the continuing excavation work was done to locate the bones of the princesses and apparently they have found something. Reporter those empty tombs leading officials to investigate nearby where they soon made the discovery of the containers under a stone slab leading to the plaintiff those remains could be belong to orlandi. The vatican will formally open this new container that it found underground where it discovered some bones. Reporter tomorrow the holy see plans to unseal those two containers. Family members of orlandi and descendents of the prince says have all been invited. Those experts will be able to tell how old the bones are just by looking at them, but wont be able to complete a full scientific analysis for at least a couple of months. Of course if they can tell on site the bones are older than from 1983 it cant be Emanuela Orlandi and the mystery continues, amy. Its so fascinating. How helpful has the vatican been in this inquiry . Reporter well, amy, helpful. They are allowing the investigation and the excavations to go on and they have maintained throughout all of this that they had nothing to do with Emanuela Orlandis disappearance in 1983 and are allowing the orlandi family to follow any and all leads they think are worth following which at this point, is all of them. All right. Well, we hope the family gets some much needed answers. Thank you. We turn to a new look at what can happen in this extreme heat that were facing as part of our new series live on gma. Were going to do a live demonstration showing what can happen if youre stuck inside a car in these scorching temperatures. Yes, and guinea pig, aka gio benitez, is right outside philly right now. Philly is a great town but when we told you you were going, we had to tell you you were sitting in a car with the windows up and no ac on. Its going to get pretty hot there a little later. What are we going to see from you this morning, gio . Reporter you know what, t. J. Talkint a heat index of over 100 later today, and well see some of the hottest temperatures in years across the country. This is going to be one of the most dangerous places to be in, a hot car, especially when were talking about your children. Is this your car . Yes, sir. Open it up right now. Reporter police in oklahoma rescuing this 14monthold baby just last month left in a car sweltering in the summer heat. Its skin clammy and bright red. Is that your child . Yes, thats my child. Then come here. What the hell were you thinking . Reporter this child survived but a staggering 21 other kids have died in hot cars already this year. The biggest mistake people can make is to think this will never happen to them or their family. Ne reporter experts say yo it happened to this mother last year. I work in the emergency department. Im a nurse. I hear these stories and i have four kids and i always say, how could that possibly happen . That child too was okay. Reporter experts say it doesnt take much to turn a car deadly. Even with windows cracked temperatures can reach a dangerous 125 degrees in just minutes, and dont let mild temperatures outside fool you. Children have died from heatstroke in cars where the temps outside are as low as 60 degrees. Tinted windows dont help much either. Everybody needs to look before you walk. Reporter about a third of deadly cases are the result of children wandering into cars on their own. Experts say, always keep cars locked and keep keys out of reach of small hands. If a child goes missing on a warm day, the first place to look should be inside nearby vehicles, and teach kids to honk if they are stuck. Objection okay, we can see, gio, youre all wired up to get ready to get into that car to show how quickly they can become dangerous. We want to tell you gio will never be in danger. Right next to him, a certified paramedic will be monitoring gios heart rate and temperature the entire time. But, gio, tell us what you think we should expect. Okay, so, cecilia, right here we have the car temperature right now, were looking at 83 degrees. Weve got my heart rate, ive been talking so at 161 right now but it was earlier a little lower. And now were talking about body temperature of about 98 degrees, right . Want to take it again . Take it again. Well do it right here. So the purpose of doing this, okay, is that we want to make sure that you understand what happens to the body, because it is just so dangerous for children in the backseat of these cars. So were going to be here for the next hour and well be back to show you what happens. Yeah, gio, well check on you throughout the morning and in our next hour gio is going to show us some tips, some brandnew technology that can help keep your family safe, but this is a really important thing to hear this time of year. Yeah, and to hear that a child is 60 degrees, you dont think about that, a child can die in a car. Well keep checking on him. Coming up next a once in a lifetime encounter caught on camera. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum we are back now with that incredible shark encounter caught on camera, nat geos sharkfest giving us a rare look at what may be the biggest great white in the world known as deep blue. Abcs Victor Oquendo is in miami with more. Good morning to you, victor. Reporter good morning, t. J. Deep blue is impressive. This summer weve seen so many close calls, encounters and attacks up and down the east coast. Just yesterday right here in south florida a diver possibly bitten by a shark had to be rushed to the hospital but what was spotted off the coast of hawaii was unlike anything weve seen this summer, deep blue, one of the largest great whites ever filmed and she wasnt alone. On the open water off the coast of hawaii a huge whale carcass provides an extraordinary opportunity for this group of diver photographers and a marine biologist. T miles off the shore dinnertime for the tiger sharks feeding on the whale and an astonishing dive for the humans documenting them. Sharks dont consider humans food. We are simply not their menu. Reporter but suddenly the tiger sharks vanish. A big shadow started appearing. Reporter and a massive great white shark appears out of the blue. And i was thinking what in the world is this . It was way bigger than any shark id expect. Reporter thats marine biologist andrew gray and diver kimberly jefferies in the water just a few feet away. Photographer mark moeller capturing it all. The shark estimated to be 20 feet long, five feet longer than the average female weighing a staggering 2. 5 tons. We had i. D. Shots and video and it was more than enough to present to at least the Scientific Community for identification. Reporter the team had a hunch and authorities confirmed looking at photos the shark they encountered was likely deep blue, the largest known great white shark ever documented last seen in this viral video off the coast of guadalupe island, mexico in 2013. Deep blue is probably the most famous shark in the world besides jaws. Reporter even more surprising, they soon discovered deep blue wasnt alone. Two days later some of the crew goes out again. This time another massive great white almost as big as deep blue and this new shark was curious. Its possible this shark has never encountered humans before so i think she was just really curious and wanted to check us out. And learn something new herself. [ applause ] to be king hi. Hello again. Hi. Nice to see you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Welcome. Love the kicks first of all. Lets start there. Oh, yes. All right. Were those a birthday present because i hear you just celebrated a b all right. Were those a birthday present because i hear you just celebrated a big birthday if well, i did, yesterday. That was my birthday but these are not a birthday present in fact. How did you celebrate the every interview we did yesterday, they were like, heres a cupcake. We got cupcakes coming . I know. [ laughter ] no more. Sorry. But if you just turned, what, how old . 12. This had been out a decade. 13 years. You were still a fan i have always been a fan. So what did you think when you got this role . Oh, i was just so shocked. I was i was like out of my mind. One of the biggest roles and its such an honor just to be a part of a disney movie in general. Being one of my favorites, lion king and being simba is a huge blessing. You are simba. Seems weird to say, you are simba. You played nala. You are 14. This wasnt your first time playing her. You played her back on broadway when you were just 9 years old. Yes, yes. So what was it like to find out you were cast for this role this time around . Well, it was just amazing. It was so exciting. I mean, grew up watching the lion king and that was like one of my favorite movies growing up and i think that that is kind of what inspired me to act so that was really exciting. And i think that it feels really good making a full circle coming back to it. And the director jon favreau said when it came to casting this part there was no one else. He had you in mind for nala. What was it like to find out youre the only, the number one . It feels really great. I feel truly blessed and thank to you jon favreau. You know, hes like a really good director. No competition. Nala for a long time, though. Isnt that something. Yeah. Were seeing this but youve been nala for the past five years of your life. We do have a clip we do want to show. I know the movie is out. Well give you a little tease. Lets check it out. Oh i just cant wait to be king you have rather a long way to go, young master. If you think no one saying do this no one saying be there no one saying stop that no one saying see here now, see here. Free to run around all day well, thats definitely out. Free to do it all my way [ cheers and applause ] okay. Our audience didnt see it but you all were still dancing to this song that i know both of you have performed a lot but you especially because youve been nala since 2014. Yeah. I mean how many times have you all performed that song . Like three times. Yeah, like three times together. Oh. Yeah, yeah. People have asked us to sing it. Weve sung it a few times. All right. No cup cakes and were not going to ask you to sing. Doing things differently around here this morning. Donald glover who plays the adult simba, the grown simba gave you some acting advice. What was it . Well, it was just to be myself, and act naturally. Dont change for any role even even if you are being someone else. Just keep your own flavor on it. That is good keep your own flavor. So you guys got this huge honor to share this credit with beyonce. Yes. Yes. Cant believe it. Cant wait to see her in this as well. What was it like to when you first met her, for the first time, what did she say to you . Well, i was trying not to freak out too much. I think that i kept it kind of calm just for her. But i said hi and then she said hi and then good start. Good start. [ laughter ] and then she was like, youre my nala, right and i was like, yeah, i can be anything you want me to be. So she was like and so she hugged me and it was so great. She smells like summer. [ laughter ] and she was like do you want to take a picture and i was like, yes. And so we took some photos and i found it on getty images the next morning and it was just really exciting. Thats your instagram profile obviously. Yes. Guys, we are so happy for you. [ applause ] thank you for coming. Congratulations, we told you the lion king is in theaters everywhere right now. And coming up, the heat emergency kit you have to have. [ applause ] [ applause ] and back here on gma, great crowd for blink182 and we, of course, have a hot weekend ahead so theres some warnings going into the weekend that we could see more blackouts so thought why not put together that emergency kit youre supposed to have but i bet you dont have. A lot of folks say, yeah, yeah, yeah. I have thought about it. Go ahead and check it because you need at least a gallon of water per person. I have been in a lot of storms where this thing comes in handy because i put my headlamp around it. It could be a lantern. You got the first aid kit and noaa weather radio. Extra batteries for all of that and then the perishable, nonperishable food. That still goes bad after a while. Even if your kit together please check that. A lot of folks forget medicines and a lot of people forget about put it all in a box and have it ready to go and c good morning. Weve made it to friday.
