Packing up to two feet of rain with very real threat of massive flooding in the area and heres what it looks like from space. It is a massive storm. The president declared a state of emergency in louisiana. Were going to begin our coraith oitpaodor good morning, george. Rain, rain, lifethreatening rain. If you didnt hear that from my forecast, i would be in trouble because you need to know about Tropical Storm barry which right now most of the convection out in the gulf of mexico, the center about 100 miles south of new orleans. It should make landfall tomorrow just west of new orleans which puts new orleans in one of the worst places it could possibly be. Makes its way up by tuesday into, say, tennessee and kentucky where the rainfall would be 6 to 10 inches but its right here, its lafayette baton rouge, up to 25 inches of rain could fall. Thats when were starting to talk about a plugged up Mississippi River. Lots of levees that will be challenged and weve got the timing of the storm. I really wanted to share with you this because its not just, of course, the rain but youve got Tropical Storm warnings and hurricane warnings in place because, cecilia, you could have storm surge on order of three to six feet and tornadoes. The center of barry about 100 miles in that direction as ginger pointed out. The back side of this thing is really where the most rain and wind is. We are most concerned with the rain and the surge coming up this river. The mississippi, which has never been this high with a Tropical Storm about to hit. Overnight Tropical Storm barry gaining strength. Its winds picking up speed as it creeps closer to the louisiana coast. We were flying at this same time yesterday. The storm was substantially weaker. It certainly seems more active from a thunderstorm position. Awful lot of rainfall, a lot of lightning. Reporter now thousands are scrambling to protect their properties and evacuate to Higher Ground before barry makes landfall. Were hoping everything will be okay and life and property will stay safe. Reporter in new orleans, residents are just recovering from floodwaters swallowing the city wednesday. Authorities are prompting residents to make a plan to shelter in place for yet another round. You need to have at least 72 hours of food, water and medication for everyone in the house including your pets. Reporter authorities closing hundreds of floodgates around nola as eyes turn to the levees. The Mississippi River is already engorged and with a Tropical Storm threatening up to two feet of rain and a sixfoothigh storm surge the river is expected to crest at 19 feet, just inches from the top of the levees. Miles of these levees protect the city but look how close the water is to the top and this wind is only going to get worse. Hurricane storm surge being pushed upriver, essentially stopping the flow lifting the levels and potentially sending water right into downtown. But the army corps of engineers says even if the levees are overtopped they will not fail. We are confident that we are not going to have a duplicate of katrina, however, if you have a storm that has elevations much higher than those floodwalls youll get water in the city. And that is the wild card here. How high does this river get and forecasting river levels is far from exact. Especially when youre dealing with rainfall on top of the storm surge, what well see here. Now, what we have off to my left, thats the french quarter. Off to my right that is downtown and these levees are not this high all around the city. Certainly not in the communities down to our south in Plaquemines Parish where they are evacuating right now and not to mention whats going to happen in the capital city of baton rouge with memories fresh of 2016, tremendous amount of rain coming with this system, not just here but across the entire eastern part of the state and far inland and its a slow mover so this is going to be a long weekend across the south. The storm expected to be a major test for those levees which protect new orleans which failed during hurricane katrina. Joining us now is louisiana governor john bel edwards. Those semi submersibles are nearly impossible to spot in the pacific. With one officer screaming in spanish for the suspected cocaine smugglers to stop their boat. [ speaking Foreign Language ] another coast guard skiff slams in the surf. Its going to be hard to get on. Reporter two guardsmen in full Tactical Gear daringly popping on to that and crab walk to the hatch and one guardsman slamming his fist down. Five suspects hauling more than 17,000 pounds of cocaine worth about 230 million. The captain of that coast guard cutter says the submarinelike boat can be almost impossible to spot except from above. Our ship alone interdicted 11 different vessels and a number of other coast guard assets down in the same theater of operations and so we had over 50,000 pounds of cocaine and heroin on the deck to turn in to the dea for destruction. Reporter george, good morning to you. When Jeffrey Epstein was arrested prosecutors made a very public plea asking for more victims to come forward. This morning we can report several women with allegations have contacted attorneys. This as the judge in the case is weighing on whether to let epstein out of jail. This morning, disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein pledging to put up his 77 million manhattan mansion and a private jet as collateral to secure bond and get out of jail while he awaits trial. In their legal filings epsteins attorneys say he would agree to home detention in manhattan, gps electronic monitoring and would not seek or obtain a new passport. Prosecutors have called epstein an extreme flight risk because of his vast wealth. The charges are very serious and carry with them a maximum sentence of 45 years in jail which to someone of epsteins age is a life sentence so we think he has every incentive to flee the jurisdiction. Reporter its unclear to prosecutors how wealthy he is. His career has taken several twists and turns. From being a math teacher at an elite new York Prep School to becoming a wall street insider then a private wealth manager. His Real Estate Holdings alone are worth hundreds of millions. Besides his mansions in manhattan and palm beach, he has an estate in new mexico and owns two private islands in the caribbean and a home in paris. He traveled in private jets like this one which according to flight logs from Court Records he used to travel with celebrities and world leaders. A philanthropic trip to africa in 2002 included president bill clinton, Actor Kevin Spacey and chris tucker. In civil litigation its been alleged he used his planes to shuttle underage girls around the u. S. And overseas. Epstein has pleaded not guilty to the allegations in the indictment. Now, epsteins lawyers have maintained the government is trying to redo after what they are calling a sweet heart deal in florida. Epstein served 13 months in a county jail but was allowed to go to work six days a week. A judge will decide monday whether he gets bail. Thanks. Lets bring in dan abrams for more on this. So how does the judge weigh this. There is a presumption of bail in a case like this. I think that people sometimes forget that a defendant is presumed innocent and theres a presumption, the person is out until their trial but in a case like this you have to weigh things like not just how much money does he have and therefore how much ability would he have to flee, but what are the risks of flight . What is the risk he is potentially to the community . Those are the most important issues here. Its not just how rich is he. Its a question of how much of a threat is he and how much could they do to make sure that he doesnt go anywhere. Does he solve it by saying ill give over my passport and hire security guards to keep me in my home. He potentially solves the issue of flight. They would argue that doesnt necessarily address the threat to the community and could have people come into the house and still be going out when hes going places and be a threat, et cetera, so prosecutors are going to still say they dont believe that even those conditions would be enough to prevent him from being a threat. How are the optics here in the question of fairness. Who else can put up, what, 100 million in collateral for bail. Absolutely but thats also what makes him such a risk it works both ways. On the one hand its what makes him such a risk for flight is because he has so much money because he has a plane because he has all these things. Thats what makes him so dangerous in terms of potentially fleeing. Its also what allows him to say, look, ill spend all my money to make sure that youre comfortable with the situation. But theres no question, by the way, that every day in this country there are people who cannot afford to pay bail and they sit behind bars because they cant pay for it. How does the judge factor in if at all like things on his last plea deal he worked from home six daps a week. It shouldnt matter. Because he got a good deal doesnt mean he should get a bad deal this time. Theres no question with the world watching this case, Jeffrey Epsteins not in as good a place as he might be if no one was watching. Dan abrams, thanks very much. The new study claiming that cutting a small amount of calories from your diet could be beneficial even for adults who are of a healthy weight. Abcs chief medical correspondent dr. Jennifer ashton is here to show us what this magic number is. So what exactly does this study say . Cecilia, this, i would file under the category of, yes, every little bit helped. This is the first study even though small done by the nih and looked at normal weight, lean or maybe slightly overweight people, followed them for two years and found that just cutting about 12 of their daily caloric intake which amounted to just 300 calories improved a lot of their cardiovascular risk factors. So take a look at the risk. Not just longterm heart health benefit, improved cholesterol and Blood Pressure numbers and reduced risk of diabetes and all markers that we measure in the blood improved with this tiny bit of work. Thats amazing. Youre also Board Certified in obesity medicine. So who does this apply to . Even a small amount of weight loss, does it help anybody . White sneakers with a black suit, i never would have thought of that. No tie. We kept his shirt open there and has a dry technology so even if he does sweat a little bit or spills something on him it dries almost instant.
