Navy received two separate distress calls this morning, 45 minutes apart, after reports of explosions on the tankers and then rushed the uss bainbridge, a guided missile destroyer, to help. This was in the same waters where four tankers were sabotaged last month, but the damage from the suspected attack this morning appears to be far more serious. Reporter for community and family at dobbins technical high school, one father stands out every single day as a father to his own five kids and hundreds of others. Mr. Charles makes it happen. He gets it done. To watch him work is magical. We are witnessing greatness. True compassion at work. Reporter Charles Reyes grew up in the struggling area of north philadelphia returning to his high school as a Community School coordinator. The students love him. They call him mr. Charles. Hes very involved with everything that they do. Youre talking about a really highpoverty area, an area i would consider to be a food desert, where people dont have access to highquality food. Reporter and it was charles who began a weekly handout of fresh produce. A lot of the students here dont have transportation. Imagine having to walk to School Without eating nve vegetables. You see the change in the student. How they talk. How they walk. How they interact with others. Reporter for mr. Charles, no task too small. No life crisis too big. I had a girl who had just had her 19th birthday which made her ineligible for child services. Suddenly, she was homeless. Theres charles with an answer. A phone call later and she had a place to go. Some people wouldnt probably care, but he cared enough to make sure i had somewhere to sleep. Reporter jay dillard couldnt afford to go to prom, but charles took care of everything. The suit, the shoes, the haircut and a ticket. He was like, i got everything. I was like, wow, okay. Reporter the mr. Charles stories are countless. He always gets on me about going to college and going to class and making sure my grades are good. He became that male role model that i never had in my life. So some kids, hes the only father figure that they know. Reporter charles own son sees the value of his fathers gifts. Im a black man growing up in the city of philadelphia, statistically, its hard to make it without a father. I would like to tell him that i love him. I never told him that before. Charles cares. He cares so truly, so genuinely. And so it touches me because you see these children. Theyre in and theyre out and you know they are struggling. You know their history, and you know theyre coming from, most times, bad homes, and to have people be it my husband, whoever, who are willing to go the extra mile to make sure their needs are met, is awesome. I did it, i appreciate everything he did for me to make me be the person i am right now. He really is making a huge impact on this world. One person at a time. Happy fathers day.
