He said it wont stop him from swimming in the bay but he will make some changes. Im now going to be swimming in waist deep water only. This is their kingdom. So i dont think that i want to roll the dice a second time. Reporter experts say sea lion attacks on humans are so rare, it is difficult to pinpoint exactly what sets them off. We caught up with him again in the hospital. Well hear how his recovery is coming up at 5 00. As carlos mentioned, this is not the first time sea lions have targeted humans around the bay. In 2006 there was a rogue sea scion that bit 14 swimmers in a month and chased ten more out of the water. At the time, scientists believed it was caused by the sea lions eating fish contaminated with toxic algae or perhaps a food shortage. Thats the land that the park will encompass. Now, caltrans and east Bay Regional Parks signed a key deal that gets phase one underway. Reporter remember all the weekends this fall when caltrans blew up the supports from the old eastern span of the bay bridge . Well, they didnt destroy them all. In just a few moments, how they could be part of the park project. Today were here to launch the bridge yard into its new future as public use. Reporter thats how a group of local agencies, including caltrans, east bay regional sxarks the cabrera Toll Authority announce ad deal to turn this historic Maintenance Building into the hub of a new bay front park. It will go from here to the bay. All the way to the upper edge of the bridge. It dates back to the early part of last century. It was used to maintain the trains that crisscrossed the brink. Now it is repurposed for people using the bike path. Provide a place to stop and rest. The east bay Regional Park signed a deal with caltrans to lease for additional land expanding. If they cant reach a deal about those five remaining piers, they may eventually be demolished, too. They are well into those talks. And well see what happens. Some east bay kids got very excited today about vegetables. Abc7 news was in oakland at the Cleveland Elementary School garden where these Young Farmers were up early, bringing in the harvest. The kids were so happy, they called it salad day. The carrots were a really big hit. The School Garden program is about connecting urban kids with the food they eat. A delicious lesson indeed. Once the children start eating veggies they grew themselves, they start eating more vegetables at home. So we get really excited about that. This is just the first harvest for these second and third graders. Next time around it will be soup instead of salad on the menu. It is so true. The Fire Department said this swimmer suffered a nonlife threatening bite shortly after 8 30 this morning. A 56yearold swimmer was bitten on the arm. He was rushed to San Francisco general where he underwent surgery and is expected to recover. They told her, if it is a single sea lion attacking people, he or she may be curious about them. The center advises swimmers to be cautious since theyre habitats.
