Were now hearing from the church neighbor who heard the gunman and pursued him for miles. Investigators say the shooter was bent on inflicting maximum harm. He fired off 450 rounds. And the air force has now acknowledged that it failed to flag the suspects criminal past. Abcs maggie rulli has more. I can tell you that the scene in there is horrific. Reporter after watching a video of the massacre inside this church, Law Enforcement Officials Say without a doubt, the shooter intended to kill as many people as possible. People screaming and people crying and mama, where are you . Where are you . The little kids. There were a lot of children. I saw bodies with a lot of blood. Thats all i saw, because i wasnt about to get out from where i was hiding. Reporter officials confirm the killing spree started as a domestic dispute, the shooter targeting his motherinlaw who goes to the church. Authorities say he had 15 magazines, firing off every single one. Only stopping when a neighbor Steven Wilford stepped in firing and hitting the shooter. I just wish i could have gotten there faster. Im no hero, i am not. Reporter but to this small town of 400, thats exactly what he is a hero. And confirmed the gunman was shot twice by willeford. There are questions about how the shooter was able to legally buy these guns with his past of Domestic Abuse. And the discharge from the air force. And family and friends of those lost in the attack came out to honor them last night. The 26 victims were honored with songs and prayers. The loss for one family is unimaginable. Eight members of the holcombe family were killed. They span three generations. An unborn child was among them. 14 people are still hospitalized, a dozen in critical condition. The air force admits it did not submit his criminal history to the fbi. So there was nothing to stop him from buying a gun. Heres abcs pierre thomas. Reporter Law Enforcement officials have viewed the video of the massacre. One of them tells abc news theres little doubt that kelley came to the church to kill everyone in that building, period, and called him a horrible monster. That stark assessment as the root was rooted in a domestic dispute, the suspect hunting his motherinlaw. The suspects motherinlaw attended the church, we know she had received threatening texts from him. Reporter Authorities Say kelley showed up with a bulletproof vest and a mask with a skull pictured on it. And the evidence is mounting that for devin kelley, violence was a family affair. He was discharged from the air force in 2014 after serving a oneyear sentence for assaulting his first wife and infant stepson. Military records show he hit the child with enough force to produce death or grievous bodily harm. In theory, the Domestic Abuse charges should bar someone in buying guns. And the man who cut the massacre short by confronting the shooter with an Assault Rifle of his own is speaking now. Steven wilford heard the gunshots from his home across the street from the church. He grabbed his own weapon and ran to the church. Not even wasting time to put on shoes. He chased him to the next county with the help of another bystander, at times going more than 90 miles an hour. All i want to stress today is the people in that church, theyre friends of mine. Theyre family. And every time i heard a shot, i knew that that probably represented a life. I was scared to death. I was. I was scared for me. I was scared for every one of them, and i was scared for my own family that just lived less than a block away. Im no hero. I am not. I think my god, my lord protected me and gave me the skills to do what needed to be done. And i just wish i could have gotten there faster. But i didnt know. I didnt know what was happening. He was scared, but he was incredibly brave. The suspect was found dead in his suv after driving into a ditch. Police say willeford shot him in the leg and torso during that confrontation and the suspect then shot himself in the head. And we are learning more about those killed in the attacks. 26 victims were remembered overnight by friends and family at a vigil in Sutherland Springs. The group prayed together, singing religious songs. Among the victims, eight members of the holcombe family, including three children and an unborn child. 14 people are reportedly still hospitalized, a dozen still in critical condition. Abcs matt gutman has more from texas. Reporter he left behind a slaughterhouse. You could see First Responders working on the wounded. Under that yellow tarp theres a dead body right there. Reporter neighbor David Casillas was there moments later, weeping as he filmed. I seen family members coming out of the church with blood on their arms and their clothes. They couldnt even talk. I mean, they couldnt say nothing. Reporter the victims ranging from just 18 months to 77 years old. When you see babies, young children, i mean, thats what, that gets to you. Reporter police say up to 14 children in all, including pastor frank pomeroys 14yearold daughter annabelle. We lost more than belle yesterday. And one thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is the fact that belle was surrounded yesterday by her Church Family that she loved fiercely. Reporter among them, members of a nowdecimated church youth group. Five of them are gone. Yeah. Its heartbreaking. That church is my family. And theres so many that are gone. It hurts so much. Reporter and one pastor here telling me that before they can even begin to grieve, they first have to bury the dead. Brian and carlas son on the right survived the shooting but crystal holcombe who was eight months pregnant did not. Three of their children were killed, along with their unborn child. All in all, eight members of the same family. 5yearold ryland ward rushed to a San Antonio Hospital in the moments after the carnage. His aunt setting up this gofundme page. Ryland was shot multiple times. His stepmother and two sisters did not survive. The volunteers, emts and doctors at connolly memorial received eight of the victims in this e. R. Every time i heard a shot, i knew that probably represented a life. I was scared to death. Death. Dea. But the former nra instructor didnt freeze, he grabbed his gun and raced outside. He wasnt even wearing shoes. As the gunman sped away, willeford spotted johnny langendorf. He briefed me quickly on what happened and said we had to get him. So thats what i did. Reporter during the chase, the gunman lost control of his vehicle and crashed it into a ditch. An up confirmed that willeford did shoot him but ultimately kelley killed himself. He was discharged in 2014 after serving a oneyear sentence for assaulting his first wife and 11monthold stepson. Military records show he intentionally broke the childs clavicle and injured his skull. In theory, the Domestic Abuse charges should have barred anyone from obtaining guns but the air force allegedly failed to enter information about kelleys conviction into an fbi database, one source calling it an administrative error.
