Search and rescue efforts continue this morning in the hardest hit areas of the state after hurricane harvey. This morning, houstons police chief says they have completed 2,000 rescue missions so far. Fema officials estimate at least 30,000 residents will have to stay in shelters temporarily because of the catastrophic flooding. That flooding is expected to continue. And it will only recede slowly. Rain has been pounding up to 50 counties throughout texas since friday. Officials also say refineries have voluntarily shut down. Parts of texas could see another 25 inches of rain. And of course, that warning continues this morning. A Tropical Storm warning is actually still in effect in houston and victoria, reggie. I used to live in houston. Even during a bad thunderstorm, that place with flood with no problem. Sometimes the roads cant handle it. It cant. Its not developed for that. The bayous are very slow moving. Fortunately, there is help coming from all across the country, including menlo park. Theyre sending help to texas as we speak. Several other bay area groups are already there. Abc7 News Reporter matt keller live in menlo park with more on the local efforts to help this national disaster. Matt. Reporter yes, reggie. So much help is needed in texas. Thats what First Responders from here in the bay area are doing. Theyre on their way to help. Theyre on the road to texas. As soon as they get there, theyll help in the rescues that are very much needed. Yesterday, a lot of preparations to get on the road. They had to pack their boats. They had to pack all that equipment here in menlo park. The states urban search and rescue task force three out of menlo park spent the afternoon packing for the trip to texas. 16person team specializes in water rescue. Obviously, thats very much needed. Team members are coming from several bay area departments including the fire district, Central San Mateo county, palo alto, san jose, san mateo, and south San Francisco. Task forces bringing five vehicles and ten boats and trailers, enough equipment to last a couple weeks. So were hoping for, you know, success. Success is really measured by going out there and saving people. Thats what theyre looking forward to doing. Last time this team was called out was during the flooding in san jose earlier this year. Menlo parks fire chief says its the most significant deployment since Hurricane Katrina, when his team saved a lot of lives. Reporting live in menlo park, matt keller, abc7 news. Matt, thank you. President trump is back at the white house this morning after a weekend at camp david where he monitored developments in texas. The president is praising the, quote, great coordination, says that the allout effort is going well. Mr. Trump says hes ready to travel to texas as soon as he can without causing any disruption. The white house says that trip will happen tomorrow. It could be days before flights are back to normal because of harvey. All commercial flights have been grounded at both of the citys major airports. These pictures from Hobby Airport, it shows one of the n runways under water. More than 4,000 flights into texas have been canceled into tuesday. The effects, of course, being felt nationwide. Alameda county firefighters say theyre making progress on this large grass fire. This started last night in unincorporated alameda county. Crews were called south of livermore. Reporter good morning, jessica. It is still a mess here in houston, as you can see, the rain is just not stopping. Harveys not done with this city. Its devastating already. So to think that on top of the 25 inches of rain weve already received that we could get 25 more inches of rain. Rescues continue throughout the night in houston. The countrys fourth largest city in crisis. The water came up so fast. It was incredible. Emergency management officials are asking the public for help, saying they need more boats for rescues. As roads have turned into rivers. The geography in houston not helping the situation. Rainwater is forced onto streets, then onto small bayous easily overwhelmed by heavy downpours. First responders are stretched so thin, neighbors are pitching in to help rescue others from the devastating floodwaters that followed hurricane harvey. First time in 40 years that the water has come up this high. Ive been here for 40 years. A lot of storm. Other desperate storms are being plucked from their rooftops. Some by coast guard helicopters. Choppers from as far away as san diego and cape cod have joined in rescue efforts. That person is on their roof. They have been yelling help and hello for the last few minutes. Many residents having trouble getting through to 911 as the system has been overrun with thousands of calls. Residents are being told not to call unless the situation is lifethreatening. We need help in fifth ward. We need people here to evacuate people. Get people here now before they die. The citys mayor asking for patience. Many of those already rescued from the flood waters left with nothing. Like memories that get taken away by like something that you dont expect. But i mean, its all just materialistic stuff. It is just heartbreaking to see so many people suffering. So many in this town. We know at last check that 30,000 people are in shelters all around town. That number is probably growing. You have to think, whats left behind with their homes . Not much if its flooded. And those tornadoes that we heard about, so many water rescues, too. A lot of people have asked about our airports, our two airports both closed. And now we just wait, with all this rain, to see what happens next here in houston. Counterprotest group will have a conference here in a couple hours to celebrate what theyre calling a successful weekend, saying they won a victory against the forces of white supremacy. There were fights over the weekend at the protest in berkeleys Civic Center Park. Patriot prayer founder joey gibson showed up at the park but was pepper sprayed by antifa members. So were her supporters. One man who showed up for what was supposed to be an antimarxist rally says he is tired of being labeled. Keep getting called white supremacist. Im a legal latino. The lady throwing the event is a trans woman. Theyre still trying to portray her as a white supremacist. It doesnt make any sense. Police say they made 13 arrests. Six people were hurt. Two of those were taken to the hospital. The Groups Holding the press conference this morning say they were grateful for the help from masked antifa members who they say protected counterprotesters. We are watching developing news at our live desk. The governor of texas expected to tour the Texas Coastal bend today, where harvey has made landfall as a category 4 hurricane. We have been tracking it throughout the morning. It has been downgraded to a Tropical Storm. At least 1500 water rescues have taken place. As crews continue right now to search for any survivors of that deadly storm. Officials are calling this unprecedented, devastating flooding. Emergency workers are starting to release water from two Flood Control dams in houston to prevent uncontrollable flooding in that area. Nearly 2,000 fema Staff Members have been deployed to help. That was my bedroom there. And whether i like it or not, i got skylights that were free. A lot of feelings, a lot of memories. Pretty rough to talk about it. Tough to hear those folks talk about it. At least four people have died as a result of harvey. The National Hurricane center said at least 50 inches of rain have fallen in some areas over the weekend. Fema posted updates on its response efforts. 1800 staff have supplied more than 1 million meals. A million liters of water, and 20,000 tarps. They have also supplied more than 70 generators. Both airports in houston are closed until further notice. Bush intercontinental and Hobby Airport have grounded all flights. Thats having a Ripple Effect on flights from coast to coast. Houstons bush intercontinental is a hub for united airlines, especially for flights in and out of central and south america. Southwest airlines is the largest carrier operating out of houstons Hobby Airport, and yesterday, they had to go in and do a special rescue to take people out of hobby who were stranded in the airport. Its certainly a mess everywhere. And another bay area search and rescue team trying to help. They are making their way to texas to help in those hardest hit areas in the wake of Tropical Storm harvey. The states 14person urban search and rescue task force three out of menlo park, specializes in water rescues. Obviously, theyre needed. Theyre bringing boats and enough equipment to last at least a few weeks. And the last time this team was called out was during the flooding we saw in san jose earlier this year. Members of task force four, meanwhile, they left oakland saturday night to help. So a lot of bay area people there. Of course, this isnt the major priority, but we should let you know if youre running low on gas, you might think about filling up soon. At least ten Oil Refineries in the houston and Corpus Christi area are offline this morning. That is reducing gas supplies nationwide. You know what happens then, right . Gasoline futures spiked 7 overnight. Futures determine what gas stations will pay in the next few days. And then it usually takes about a week or so for the price spikes to trickle down to the pump. In other news, piedmonts mayor has resigned amid claims he posted inflammatory comments on facebook. A piedmont resident told the east bay times jeff wieler posted statements like, quote, black lives matter encourages cop killings. And, quote, transgenders are mentally ill. The newspaper could not verify the comments, but it was enough for the city council to call a special meeting for today to consider ousting wieler. But since he has resigned, that meeting has been cancelled, and in a statement, he has said, quote, i am proud of what i accomplished at a civic volunteer. I am less proud of how my service as mayor is ending. Wieler will remain on the council. Happening today, a hearing expected to continue in a recall effort against Santa Clara County judge aaron persky. He argues the recall should be handled by the state and not the county. A temporary restrainer order has stopped organizers from collecting signatures put that issue on next junes ballot. If the court sides with persky, that means they would have to start this recall all over again. Organizers say persky has a pattern of bias in cases involving sex crimes, including the case against former stanford swimmer brock turner. The u. S. Navy says divers have recovered the remains of all ten sailors who went missing after the uss john mccain and an oil tanker collided near singapore. Divers found the remains over the weekend in flooded compartments of the destroyer. The cause of last mondays collision is still under investigation. The top u. S. Navy commander has ordered ships around the world stop and retrain sailors in proper procedures and safety precautions. President trump plans to sign an executive order that restores military equipment to local Law Enforcement ageagies. The a. P. Reports it will give them access to grenade launches, firearms, and other gear, and this would undo an Obama Administration order that limited the distribution of the military gear. And some kids going back to school today are going to be very hot heading home, Alum Rock Union school district, 66 this morning. Look at that dangerous heat and poor air quality possible. 97 degrees at 3 00. And for albany, our unified school district, going to be a warm afternoon full of sunshine. 82 degrees after starting off at about 61. Waking up in the south bay, look at the hills. 83 in los gatos. Our valleys around 60 to 64 degrees. And you can see thats pretty much the case everywhere. You even have 50s as you head up towards san carlos, San Francisco, half moon bay, novato, bodega bay, and upper 60s in places like danville and brentwood at 68. Heres a look at the san mateo bridge. Looking westbound. You can see some of the haze trying to creep through the gap and make it down to san mateo. There are breezy spots on the bay this morning. On the roads, we do have some of that spotty fog up in the north bay, starting to develop and along the coast in mass transit, it is mild to hot right now. The drive to texas is 28plus hours, and theyre on the road right now. They have their gear, they have their boats, and as soon as they get there, theyre going to start rescuing people. It took a lot of preparation yesterday here in menlo park. The states urban search and rescue task force three spent the afternoon packing. They specialize in water rescue. The team members are coming from several bay area departments, including palo alto, san jose, san mateo, and south San Francisco. The task force is bringing five vehicles and ten boats and trailers. Enough kwement to last a couple weeks. The last time they were called out was in the flooding in san jose earlier this year. Theyre in contact with teams ahead of them trying to figure out the best travel routes and open travel routes ahead of them to get there as quickly as possible. Matt keller, abc7 news. Thank you. Its 6 46. This morning, u. S. Border patrol is working with mexican authorities to investigate an illegal tunnel used to smuggle people across the border. Border patrol agents discovered the tunnel saturday near the otay mesa crossing east of san diego. They detained 23 chinese nationals and 7 mexican nationals. Investigators believe the tunnel may be an the extension of another passageway seized by mexican authorities. The Lgbtq Community rallying around a russian violinist who fears he may never come home after coming out a few weeks ago. He has been living in chicago for the last two years. The bacteria comes in part from human waste from nearby homeless camps. Sacramento county has approved money to stop eillegal campus and clean up the area. For the first time, a drug is helping prevent heart attacks by curbing inflammation instead of lowering cholesterol. The study is in a new england journal of medicine. Researchers looked at heart attack survivors at risk of another attack because of inflammation. They often happen with people with low cholesterol and high inflammation.
