A breakthrough by bay area researchers could provide a powerful new tool as we continue to battle the drought. As abc 7 news anchor Cheryl Jennings reports its giving experts an unprecedented view of clouds. Reporter millions of californians worry about how long our drought may last, some important clues are literally floating above us. Trouble is we havent been able to decode them yet. Despite decades of research, theres still a lot we dont know about how clouds behave. Reporter to help unravel those mysteries researchers david ross have invented a new way of looking at clouds. They started by placing two cameras slightly apart along the coast of south florida. Left alone, they would produce an offset view of the sky that you can actually duplicate yourself. If i close one eye, then the other eye, youll see that the same cloud is moist. Reporter take those moving targets and blend them together with powerful computers and you get a stunning 3d image of clouds as they move through their life cycle. Big turbulent mess of heat, water, and energy here. And with all that churning, the berkley team was then able to write a digital Recognition Software that tracks the shape of clouds as they change. The results are incredibly precise models of cloud behavior, from lightning to turbulence, to perhaps the most important, rain. The process of making rain is about cloud dynamics how air moves within clouds. Thats what we can measure with these cameras. While the notion of getting the arms around the cloud may seem fanciful, the berkley team believes the data theyve been gathering will help develop longterm models that are far more precise helping us plan for the forces that have such a profound effect on our lives. Cheryl jennings, abc 7 news. Well clouds today maybe a little bit of thunderstorms there. If were lucky. More likely weve had some sprinkles and light rain, even towards Sonoma County and petaluma, weve had reports in the east bay near livermore and danville, and heres a look at live doppler 7 hd doesnt look much different, does it . Well, maybe by later on today well have a few areas in the south bay. Gilroy hollister san jose gives us the best chance of seeing some rain and we go in closer and youll see north of 101 you have some moiseture there. Boy, a lot of activity this morning from monterey on south, tons of thunderstorms around San Luis Obispo and los angeles picked up yesterday a third of an inch. Normal for july is. 01. They were the big winners, continuing to pump up into california. Not much of it will be in the bay area but just a little bit here and there. So youll notice the cloud cover here. The moisture content of the air is going to increase through the day today. Look at the temperatures 68 in san jose 73 in Half Moon Bay. San francisco already 67 and a cloudy look out from our exploratorium camera, where we have temperatures from the mid 60s to 77 by the delta. So 24hour temperature change, much warmer. Anywhere from about three degrees warmer to 11 degrees warmer from the coast, out towards the delta. So we talk about the dew point and thats a measure of the moisture in the air, higher the dew point more uncomfortable it is and usually in the 50s in the bay area, but picking up a degree or so in the past couple of hours and were expected to see them in the 60s today and tomorrow. So thats why its going to feel humid, a little sticky out there. Add in some sunshine and its warm. Partly cloudy this morning. Emeryville out there with muggy conditions throughout the bay area today with a spotty shower possible. Isolated thunderstorm maybe. Heres a look at the picture, see the darker gray clouds. As i widen the view, look at the bright white tops. These are the towering thunderstorms from monterey all the way down through the coastal areas of off the coast of santa barbara. Thats where we get the vertical development and the activity weather. On our satellite picture, you can see the yellows and the reds there all pretty much south of the bay area. So we will be looking for a pretty warm day today and various widespread thunderstorms from the northern to the southern sierras, through los angeles. Again, and there is a moisture source continuing to creep up through bergoglio county, monterey, and most likely in the south bay. 11 00, low 70s for the aids walk in San Francisco. Mid to upper 70s today, so yeah it is definitely a different feel to the air today and tomorrow. 80 in oakland 86 vallejo, 90s from napa to our east bay valleys and in oakland in particular, probably not going to see rain, but its going to feel warm and you might get a sprinkle.
